Abstract:A graphene-based electrical current sensor is proposed utilizing a microfiber coil resonator. Monolayer graphene sheet with a large sheet resistance is transferred onto the surface of a glass capillary rod. A microfiber is spirally wrapped around the graphene sheet to form a coil resonator. Heat generated from electrical current shifts the resonant wavelength because of the thermal effect in the microfiber resonator. The sensor exhibits a very good performance with a high sensitivity of 67.297 mu m/A(2), which is two orders of magnitude higher than that reported earlier. Our results show that microfiber-graphene-integrated devices have great potential for miniature and highly sensitive fiber sensors for monitoring electrical current. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:With diameter close to or below the wavelength of guided light and high index contrast between the fiber core and the surrounding, an optical microfiber shows a variety of interesting waveguiding properties, including widely tailorable optical confinement, evanescent fields and waveguide dispersion. Among various microfiber applications, optical sensing has been attracting increasing research interest due to its possibilities of realizing miniaturized fiber optic sensors with small footprint, high sensitivity, fast response, high flexibility and low optical power consumption. Here we review recent progress in microfiber optical sensors regarding their fabrication, waveguide properties and sensing applications. Typical microfiber-based sensing structures, including biconical tapers, optical gratings, circular cavities, Mach-Zehnder interferometers and functionally coated/doped microfibers, are summarized. Categorized by sensing structures, microfiber optical sensors for refractive index, concentration, temperature, humidity, strain and current measurement in gas or liquid environments are reviewed. Finally, we conclude with an outlook for challenges and opportunities of microfiber optical sensors.

Abstract:The unique electronic and mechanical properties, of graphene make it an ideal material for nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) applications. Here, a miniature optical fiber current sensor based on a quasistatic graphene NEMS with a graphene membrane covering the hole on a pre-etched fiber tip and two gold electrodes on opposite sides of the tip has been demonstrated. The sensor overcomes the shortcomings of conventional optical fiber current sensors based on thermal effects, such as relatively low sensitivity, long response time, and huge device size; it has simultaneously a high sensitivity of 2.2 x 10(5) nm/A(2), a short response time of similar to 0.25 s and a compact device size of similar to 15 mu m, and has found practical application. Using a smaller graphene membrane with better quality can reduce the response time to submillisecond levels with a more precise measurement system. The sensor presented in this paper may pave the way for the practical usage of optical fiber current sensors based on thermal effects.

Abstract:We demonstrate a new fiber-optic current sensor based on graphene nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) with a graphene membrane covering the hole on a fiber tip and two gold electrodes on opposite sides of the tip. The suspended graphene membrane will deform due to thermal effect when electrical current flows through it. Then the strain in the graphene nanomechanical resonator will change and it leads to the shift of resonant frequency. The proposed sensor is compact and shows a sensitivity as high as ~ 262.5 kHz/mA 2 . It can also be used for magnetic field sensors based on Lorentz force.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally investigated a compact and ultra-sensitive integrated photonic current sensor based on a silicon ring resonator in this paper. The current flowing through the integrated resistive TiN heater produces the Joule's heat and changes the temperature, which results in the change of refractive index and physical dimensions of the ring. An optical spectrum analyzer is used to monitor the resonant wavelength shift of the ring. The experiment results show that the sensor achieves an ultra-high sensitivity of 6.8. x. 10(4) nm A(-2) and good linearity between real-time current and wavelength shift in the test range of 0-10 mA.

Abstract:A type of compact temperature sensor based on microfiber knot resonator is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The microfiber knot, which is assembled by two fiber probes, is placed on a plate glass substrate and coated with low-index polymer to keep the system robust. Sensitivities of this kind of temperature sensor as 0.27nm/°C in heating process (when temperature ranges from 28 to 140°C) and −0.28nm/°C in cooling process (when temperature ranges from 135 to 25°C) are obtained. Temperature resolution of 0.5°C is demonstrated and higher resolution is predicted with a high-resolution spectrometer.

Abstract:Microfluidic chips have been proven to be a powerful technical platform for chemical synthesis, biomedical research, and optofluidic devices. Here, we report a smart microfluidic chip (SMC) with multiple functionality to sense the status or incidents occurring on chip. The SMC is enabled by a soft, flexible and attachable film embedded with optical micro/nanofibres (MNFs), which is highly compatible with microfluidic chips fabricated by lithography. Based on the transition from guided modes to radiation modes of the MNFs, simultaneous flow rate detection in multiple channels is demonstrated on a SMC with high sensitivity. The MNF-enabled SMC is also capable of monitoring the transportation and morphology of microfluidic droplets with fast response. In addition, real-time counting of the magnetic droplets is performed to verify the SMC's anti-electromagnetic interference ability. This SMC is unique and may play an important role in microreactors, droplet microfluidics and optofluidic sensors.

Abstract:Electric current sensors are widely utilized in high-frequency power and electronic circuits which spread over numerous industries. Here, a current sensor based on the high-Q whispering gallery mode optical capillary microresonator filled with Terfenol-D nanoparticles is experimentally demonstrated. The device shows a peak AC current sensitivity of 5.285 μA Hz -1/2 with a corresponding high accuracy of 0.0009%. It possesses a wide detection frequency bandwidth of approximately 12 MHz and exhibits good linearity, enabling for partial discharge signals detection.

Abstract:We obtain an extremely high current sensitivity by wrapping a section of microfiber on a thin-diameter chromium-nickel wire. Our detected current sensitivity is as high as 220.65 nm/A2 for a structure length of only 35 μm. Such sensitivity is two orders of magnitude higher than the counterparts reported in the literature. Analysis shows that a higher resistivity or/and a thinner diameter of the metal wire may produce higher sensitivity. The effects of varying the structure parameters on sensitivity are discussed. The presented structure has potential for low-current sensing or highly electrically-tunable filtering applications.

Abstract:Graphene's featureless optical absorption, ultrahigh carrier mobility and optical modulation capacity would enable a new breed of optical devices with novel photonics characteristics. The complex refractive index (CRI) of graphene can be modulated by its local boundary conditions when molecules are attaching on the surface of the graphene layer, leading to change in the CRI of graphene, which would induce altered properties of the evanescent wave propagating between the graphene film and optical waveguide. In this paper, a novel fiber-optic sensor concept that integrates the graphene film onto a microfiber is proposed to detect the molecular concentration based on TE intensity measurement. The theoretical investigation shows that such a sensor could offer a solution for realization of a variety of high sensitivity and fast response molecular sensing in biological, medical and chemical fields.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel graphene-based microfiber sensor is proposed and demonstrated for detection of gas concentration for the first time. As the complex refractive index (CRI) of graphene can be modulated by gas molecules in the surrounding environment, the propagating light along the graphene layer coupled by the microfiber would be altered to induce the attenuation of polarization mode intensity. Based on such a unique TE-polarization mode attenuation feature of graphene, experimental results showed that the acetone concentration can be measured accurately and quickly. Such an approach could open a window for realization of a variety of highly sensitive and fast gas or liquid sensors based on graphene, for wide applications in biological, medical and chemical fields.

Abstract:Taking advantage of the high thermal conductivity of graphene, this Letter demonstrates a microelectromechanical (MEM) tunable Fabry-Pérot (F-P) cavity, based on a graphene-bonded fiber device (GFD), which acts as a microheater. By increasing the electric current from 0 to 8 mA in the heater, the temperature of the GFD can rise and approach a value of 760 K theoretically. This high temperature will cause a deformation of the fiber, allowing the graphene-bonded fiber end to form a gap-adjustable F-P cavity with a cleaved single-mode fiber. The gap in the cavity can be reduced by increasing the current applied, leading the transmittance of the cavity to change. In this work, a highly sensitive current sensor (5.9×105 nm/A2) and a tunable mode-locked fiber laser (1.2×104 nm/A2) are created based on the MEM tunable F-P cavity.

Abstract:Abstract A novel optical current sensor based on microfiber knot resonator (MKR) with magnetic fluid (MF) as cladding is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. The operating principles, package technique and mounting method of the proposed sensor are introduced in detail. Moreover, the performances of the proposed sensor are demonstrated experimentally by detecting sinusoidal current with 50Hz and pulse current signals with rising time of 2.5μs respectively. The results have shown that the relationship between the sensor responding and the applied current intensity is approximately linear and the minimal detectable current is 10 Amps with SNR (Signal-to-noise ratio) as 3.

Abstract:Graphene based new physics phenomena are leading to a variety of stimulating graphene-based photonic devices. In this study, the enhancement of surface evanescent field by graphene cylindrical cladding is observed, for the first time, by using a graphene-coated microfiber multi-mode interferometer (GMMI). It is found theoretically and experimentally that the light transmitting in the fiber core is efficiently dragged by the graphene, hence significantly enhancing the evanescent fields, and subsequently improving the sensitivity of the hybrid waveguide. The experimental results for gas sensing verified the theoretical prediction, and ultra-high sensitivities of ~0.1 ppm for NH(3) gas detection and ~0.2 ppm for H(2)O vapor detection are achieved, which could be used for trace analysis. The enhancement of surface evanescent field induced by graphene may pave a new way for developing novel graphene-based all-fiber devices with compactness, low cost, and temperature immunity.

Abstract:A self-powered current sensor consisting of the magnetostrictive/piezoelectric laminate composite and the high-permeability nanocrystalline alloys is presented. The induced vortex magnetic flux is concentrated and amplified by using an optimized-shape nanocrystalline alloy of FeCuNbSiB into the magnetoelectric laminate composite; this optimization allows improving the sensitivity significantly as well as increasing the saturation of the current sensor. The main advantages of this current sensor are its large dynamic range and ability to measure currents accurately. An analytical expression for the relationship between current and voltage is derived by using the magnetic circuit principle, which predicts the measured sensitivity well. The experimental results exhibit an approximately linear relationship between the electric current and the induced voltage. The dynamic range of this sensor is from 0.01 A to 150 A, and a small electric current step-change of 0.01 A can be clearly distinguished at the power-line frequency of 50 Hz. We demonstrate that the current sensor has a flat operational frequency in the range of 1 Hz–20 kHz relative to a conventional induction coil. The current sensor indicates great potentials for monitoring conditions of electrical facilities in practical applications due to the large dynamic range, linear sensitivity, wide bandwidth frequency response, and good time stability.
