Abstract:Microfluidic chips have been proven to be a powerful technical platform for chemical synthesis, biomedical research, and optofluidic devices. Here, we report a smart microfluidic chip (SMC) with multiple functionality to sense the status or incidents occurring on chip. The SMC is enabled by a soft, flexible and attachable film embedded with optical micro/nanofibres (MNFs), which is highly compatible with microfluidic chips fabricated by lithography. Based on the transition from guided modes to radiation modes of the MNFs, simultaneous flow rate detection in multiple channels is demonstrated on a SMC with high sensitivity. The MNF-enabled SMC is also capable of monitoring the transportation and morphology of microfluidic droplets with fast response. In addition, real-time counting of the magnetic droplets is performed to verify the SMC's anti-electromagnetic interference ability. This SMC is unique and may play an important role in microreactors, droplet microfluidics and optofluidic sensors.

Abstract:Optical micro-nanofibcrs (MNFs) have diameters close to or smaller than the wavelength of the guided light. Recently, MNFs have attracted wide attention due to their important applications in optofluidic sensors. This paper begins with a brief introduction of the fabrication methods and waveguiding properties of MNFs. Based on intensity and phase modulation, we introduce the research progress of optofluidic MNF sensors in chemical and biological sensing with high sensitivity, fast response, and small footprint. Finally, the development and application of optofluidic MNF sensors are summarized and prospected.

Abstract:Single-nanoparticle detection has received tremendous interest due to its significance in fundamental physics and biological applications. Here, we demonstrate an optical nanofibre-enabled microfluidic sensor for the detection and sizing of nanoparticles. Benefitting from the strong evanescent field outside the nanofibre, a nanoparticle close to the nanofibre can scatter a portion of the field energy to the environment, resulting in a decrease in the transmitted intensity of the nanofibre. On the other hand, the narrow and shallow microfluidic channel provides a femtoliter-scale detection region, making nanoparticles flow through the detection region one by one. By real-time monitoring of the transmitted intensity of the nanofibre, the detection of a single polystyrene (PS) nanoparticle as small as 100 nm in diameter and exosomes in solution is realised. Based on a statistical analysis, the mean scattering signal is related to the size of the nanoparticle. Experimentally, a mixture of nanoparticles of different diameters (200, 500, and 1000 nm) in solution is identified. To demonstrate its potential in biological applications, high-throughput counting of yeasts using a pair of microchannels and dual-wavelength detection of fluorescently labelled nanoparticles are realised. We believe that the developed nanoparticle sensor holds great potential for the multiplexed and rapid sensing of diverse viruses. An nanofibre-enabled microfluidic sensor for detection nanoparticles which hold great potentials for sensing of diverse viruses.

Abstract:We report a robust and sensitive optical nanofiber sensor with a femtoliter-scale detection volume. The sensor is fabricated by embedding a 800-nm-diameter nanofiber into a microfluidic chip with probing light propagated perpendicular to a 5-μm-wide detection channel. To verify the effectiveness of the sensor, we present measurements of fluorescence intensity and refractive index (RI) with detection limits of 1 × 10(-7) M for fluorescein and 2.8 × 10(-4) RIU, respectively. The femtoliter-scale optical nanofiber sensor shown here may provide a compact and versatile sensing platform for sensitive and fast detection of ultra-low-volume samples, as well as studying the dynamics of single molecule.

Abstract:We report an ultra-sensitive and robust fluorescence sensor made by using a biconical taper with a waist diameter of 720 nm for both excitation and fluorescence collection. To enhance the stability of the fluorescence sensor, the biconical taper has been embedded in a 125 mu m wide microchannel with a detection length of 2.5 cm. Investigated by measuring the fluorescence intensity of rhodamine 6G (R6G), the sensor shows a detection limit down to 100 pM, with excellent reversibility in a concentration range of 0-10 nM. The sensor has also been applied to quantum dot (QD)-labeled streptavidin measurements, yielding a detection sensitivity down to 10 pM for QDs. In addition, the small sample volume (ca. 500 nL), high sampling throughput, and seamless connection between the biconical taper and standard optical fibers offer a number of attractive advantages for chemical and biosensing applications.

Abstract:A challenge for optofluidic absorbance detection is the high concentration limit of detection due to the short optical path length. Herein, we introduce a concept of utilizing the coiled optical nanofiber for highly sensitive and robust optofluidic absorbance detection. Investigated by measuring the absorbance of FeCl3 solutions, the sensor shows a detection limit down to 10 μM with excellent reversibility in a concentration range of 0-5 mM. The sensitivity is 10-fold higher than that of standard absorbance measurement by using a 1 cm cuvette. Also, highly sensitive chloramphenicol sensing was demonstrated by using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method, achieving a detection limit below 0.5 ng/L. The higher sensitivity and lower detection limit are caused by the large fractional power of evanescent field outside the nanofiber and the long detection length, which can effectively improve the absorption of the evanescent field, while the excellent reversibility is caused by the support of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) pillar rather than by suspending the nanofiber in the microchannel. We envision that the present work may open up new opportunities for ultrasensitive chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract:With diameter close to or below the wavelength of guided light and high index contrast between the fiber core and the surrounding, an optical microfiber shows a variety of interesting waveguiding properties, including widely tailorable optical confinement, evanescent fields and waveguide dispersion. Among various microfiber applications, optical sensing has been attracting increasing research interest due to its possibilities of realizing miniaturized fiber optic sensors with small footprint, high sensitivity, fast response, high flexibility and low optical power consumption. Here we review recent progress in microfiber optical sensors regarding their fabrication, waveguide properties and sensing applications. Typical microfiber-based sensing structures, including biconical tapers, optical gratings, circular cavities, Mach-Zehnder interferometers and functionally coated/doped microfibers, are summarized. Categorized by sensing structures, microfiber optical sensors for refractive index, concentration, temperature, humidity, strain and current measurement in gas or liquid environments are reviewed. Finally, we conclude with an outlook for challenges and opportunities of microfiber optical sensors.

Abstract:We report a microfibre absorption sensor by using a 900 nm diameter silica microfibre embedded in a 125 mu m wide microchannel with a detection length of 2.5 cm. Investigated by measuring the absorbance of methylene blue (MB), the sensor shows a detection limit down to 50 pM with excellent reversibility in a concentration range of 0-5 nM. The sensor has also been applied to bovine serum albumin (BSA) measurement, with a detection limit of 10 fg mL(-1). In addition, the sample volume requirement is merely 500 nL with a probing light power of about 150 nW, which is very promising for safe detection of single or a few molecules of biological specimens.

Abstract:An ultra-sensitive microfluid device for detecting aggregation of induced emission molecules is proposed and demonstrated. The minimum detectable concentration is greatly reduced by use of a micromachined fiber tip and a liquid core waveguide. The fiber tip is a tapered-microlens structure with optimized shape parameters. The liquid waveguide is formed with low refractive index Teflon capillary. The dependence of photoluminescence intensity on the concentration change is tested with the device. The limit of detection is $0.316 \boldsymbol {\mu }\text{M}$ , the volume of the sample solution used is only $0.649 \boldsymbol {\mu }\text{L}$ and the minimum detectable concentration is down to 100 nM. It is a valuable result obtained with fiber spectrometer (a CCD-type machine), better than that obtained with traditional fluorospectro photometer (a photomultiplier tubes-type one). The reversibility and stability are also testified through experimental method. Together with the compact size, small sample volume and high sensitivity, the durable microfluidic sensing device has great potential for biosensing applications.

Abstract:A new sensor made of a sub-wavelength optical-fiber array is shown. On page 7462, Q. Gong, Y.-F. Xiao, and co-workers report that such a tiny optical device can detect and size single nanoscale particles, owing to its high sensitivity and real-time response ability. This simple and promising design may facilitate important applications, such as early-stage biomedical diagnostics, process control of semiconductor manufacturing, and explosives and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Electronic skin, a class of wearable electronic sensors that mimic the functionalities of human skin, has made remarkable success in applications including health monitoring, human-machine interaction and electronic-biological interfaces. While electronic skin continues to achieve higher sensitivity and faster response, its ultimate performance is fundamen-tally limited by the nature of low-frequency AC currents. Herein, highly sensitive skin-like wearable optical sensors are demonstrated by embedding glass micro/nanofibers (MNFs) in thin layers of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Enabled by the transition from guided modes into radiation modes of the waveguiding MNFs upon external stimuli, the skin-like opti-cal sensors show ultrahigh sensitivity (1870 kPa-1), low detection limit (7 mPa) and fast response (10 μs) for pressure sensing, significantly exceeding the performance metrics of state-of-the-art electronic skins. Electromagnetic interference (EMI)-free detection of high-frequency vibrations, wrist pulse and human voice are realized. Moreover, a five-sensor op-tical data glove and a 2×2-MNF tactile sensor are demonstrated. These initial results pave the way toward a new cate-gory of optical devices ranging from ultrasensitive wearable sensors to optical skins.

Abstract:Monitoring the properties of fluids in microfluidic chips often requires complex open-space optics technology and expensive equipment. In this work, we introduce dual-parameter optical sensors with fiber tips into the microfluidic chip. Multiple sensors were distributed in each channel of the chip, which enabled the real-time monitoring of the concentration and temperature of the microfluidics. The temperature sensitivity and glucose concentration sensitivity could reach 314 pm/°C and −0.678 dB/(g/L), respectively. The hemispherical probe hardly affected the microfluidic flow field. The integrated technology combined the optical fiber sensor with the microfluidic chip and was low cost with high performance. Therefore, we believe that the proposed microfluidic chip integrated with the optical sensor is beneficial for drug discovery, pathological research and material science investigation. The integrated technology has great application potential for micro total analysis systems (μ-TAS).

Abstract:Inspired by superficial neuromasts in the lateral line of fish for the sensing of flow rate, we report a bionic optical microfiber flow rate sensor by embedding a U-shaped microfiber into a thin PDMS film. When immersed into liquid, the PDMS film is deflected by the flowing liquid, resulting in a bending-dependent transmittance change of the embedded microfiber which is directly related to the flow rate of the liquid. The flow rate sensor exhibits a low detection limit (< 0.05 L/min), a high resolution (0.005 L/min), and a fast response time (12 ms). In addition, the sensitivity and working range of the sensor are tunable in a wide range via adjusting the thickness of PDMS film, the microfiber diameter, and/or the working wavelength. Abstract:A microfluidic biochip integrated with highly sensitive fiber-optic glucose biosensor is presented. With the layer-by-layer self-assembly technology, poly (ethylenimine) (PEI), poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) and glucose oxidase (GOx) multilayers were deposited on the surface of a long-period fiber grating for sensing of glucose. Experimental results reveal that the biochip can achieve ultra-low detection limit (1 nM) and is very promising for diabetes mellitus detection.

Abstract:<p>An overview of applications of fiber-optic biochemical sensor in microfluidic chips was carried out with a specific focus on different fiber-optic sensors used on chip, detection methods and biochemical application. First, the structure and sensing mechanism of different fiber-optic sensors used on chip was introduced. Second, optical detection methods in microfluidic chips combined with optical fibers and the advantages and disadvantages of each method were introduced and analyzed in detail. Then, applications of fiber-optic biochemical sensors in microfluidic sensor chips in detecting nucleic acids, proteins, cells, chemicals and microfluidic flow rate were classified and introduced, and different fiber-optic biochemical sensors in microfluidic chip were compared. Finally, a prospect of future development of fiber-optic biochemical sensor combined with microfluidic chip was addressed.</p>

Abstract:This review introduces a micro-integrated device of microfluidics and fiber-optic sensors for on-site detection, which can detect certain or several specific components or their amounts in different samples within a relatively short time. Fiber-optics with micron core diameters can be easily coated and functionalized, thus allowing sensors to be integrated with microfluidics to separate, enrich, and measure samples in a micro-device. Compared to traditional laboratory equipment, this integrated device exhibits natural advantages in size, speed, cost, portability, and operability, making it more suitable for on-site detection. In this review, the various optical detection methods used in this integrated device are introduced, including Raman, ultraviolet–visible, fluorescence, and surface plasmon resonance detections. It also provides a detailed overview of the on-site detection applications of this integrated device for biological analysis, food safety, and environmental monitoring. Lastly, this review addresses the prospects for the future development of microfluidics integrated with fiber-optic sensors.
