The sensor has a very compact device size of 14.9 μm and a sensitivity of 110 kHz/T. Abstract:Because of its outstanding mechanical and electronic properties and unique transfer flexibility, graphene is ideal for miniature all-in-fiber nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) in ultrasensitive sensing applications; however, its application in magnetic detection is limited because of the lack of magnetic-optic response. Here, we demonstrate a high spatial resolution fiber-optic magnetic field sensor based on Lorentz force in a pseudo–magnetic-response quasi-static graphene NEMS. The ultra-compact design of this all-fiber-based sensor is achieved by integrating a hybrid gold-graphene membrane and two gold electrodes onto the hollow endface of a single-mode fiber. An electrical current flowing through the suspended membrane in a perpendicular magnetic field can generate Lorentz force to cause a nanoscale deformation of the membrane. The sensor has a much higher spatial resolution, which is nanometer-scale longitudinally, compared with conventional optical fiber magnetic sensors.

Abstract:We demonstrate a new fiber-optic current sensor based on graphene nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) with a graphene membrane covering the hole on a fiber tip and two gold electrodes on opposite sides of the tip. The suspended graphene membrane will deform due to thermal effect when electrical current flows through it. Then the strain in the graphene nanomechanical resonator will change and it leads to the shift of resonant frequency. The proposed sensor is compact and shows a sensitivity as high as ~ 262.5 kHz/mA 2 . It can also be used for magnetic field sensors based on Lorentz force.

Abstract:Graphene is an excellent base material for a nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) because of its extraordinary characteristics, including a large specific surface area, high Young's modulus, enormous stiffness, and low density. The graphene NEMS mainly studies the electromechanical properties of graphene films. Its resonant frequency has a very sensitive response to mass, force, and heat, which has a great application prospect in the sensing field. Meanwhile, the optical fiber sensor has been widely studied and applied, whose combination with graphene can possess a greater advantage. In this paper, the working principle, preparation process, sensing application of the graphene NEMS as well as the fiber-based graphene NEMS sensors arc reviewed and prospected.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel resonant magnetic sensor consisting of a graphene nanomechanical oscillator and magnetostrictive stress coupling structure, using Si/SiO2 substrate and Fe–Ga alloy, respectively. In this device, the deformation of the Fe–Ga alloy resulting from the external magnetic field changed the surface tension of the graphene, resulting in a significant change in the resonance frequency of graphene. Using the finite element analysis, it could be found that the response of the resonance frequency revealed a good linear relationship with the external magnetic field (along the x-axis) in the range of the 1 to 1.6 mT. By optimizing the sizes of each component of the magnetic sensor, such as the thickness of the Si/SiO2 substrate and the Fe–Ga alloy, and the length of the graphene, the sensitivity could even reach 834 kHz/mT, which is three orders of magnitude higher than conventional resonant magnetic devices. This provides a new method for highly sensitive and miniaturized magnetic sensors.

Abstract:In this study,an optical fiber-based magnetically-tuned graphene mechanical resonator[GMR]is demonstrated by inte-grating superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles on the graphene membrane.The resonance frequency shift is achieved by tuning the tension of the graphene membrane with a magnetic field.A resonance frequency tunability of 23 kHz using a 100 mT magnetic field is achieved.The device provides a new way to tune a GMR with a non-contact force.It could also be used for weak magnetic field detection in the future with further improvements in sensitivity.

Abstract:The unique electronic and mechanical properties, of graphene make it an ideal material for nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) applications. Here, a miniature optical fiber current sensor based on a quasistatic graphene NEMS with a graphene membrane covering the hole on a pre-etched fiber tip and two gold electrodes on opposite sides of the tip has been demonstrated. The sensor overcomes the shortcomings of conventional optical fiber current sensors based on thermal effects, such as relatively low sensitivity, long response time, and huge device size; it has simultaneously a high sensitivity of 2.2 x 10(5) nm/A(2), a short response time of similar to 0.25 s and a compact device size of similar to 15 mu m, and has found practical application. Using a smaller graphene membrane with better quality can reduce the response time to submillisecond levels with a more precise measurement system. The sensor presented in this paper may pave the way for the practical usage of optical fiber current sensors based on thermal effects.

Abstract:Quantum magnetic sensing technology utilizing diamond nitrogen vacancy (NV) color centers exhibits high spatial resolution, sensitivity, and dynamic range. The practical applications of the NV color centers magnetometer are limited by its complex system and large volume. To expand the range of applications, it is necessary to improve the integration level of NV color centers magnetometer while meeting the requirements of high portability and sensitivity. In this article, we designed a portable integrated NV magnetometer and utilized the continuous wave optically detected magnetic resonance (CW-ODMR) method to detect magnetic field. We coupled a micro self-focusing lens with a fiber to create a fiber self-focusing integrated module (FSFI) and bonded a diamond to the other end of the lens. This module was applied to the integrated NV magnetometer. This arrangement ensured uniform intensity of the laser and expanded the irradiation area on the diamond, thereby improving the excitation efficiency of the NV color centers and the number of NV color centers involved in sensing. The magnetometer integrated a microwave antenna module and a fluorescence collection and processing module. The magnetometer was packaged using 3-D printing technology and occupied a volume of 10 cm3. After conducting experimental tests, the sensitivity of the magnetometer was 9.6 nT/Hz1/2, and the photon shot noise limited sensitivity can reach 0.85 nT/Hz1/2. The maximum detection relative error of the dc magnetic field was 0.848%, and the detection bandwidth was 40 Hz. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the ac magnetic field was 28.107 dB within the detectable bandwidth. The integrated NV magnetometer exhibits excellent performance in detecting magnetic fields and offers strong portability. In various fields, including magnetic anomaly localization, battery current detection, and medical diagnosis, it possesses significant potential for application.

Abstract:We demonstrated a fiber-integrated diamond-based magnetometer in this paper. In the system, the fluorescence of nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in nanodiamonds deposited on a tapered fiber was coupled to the tapered fiber effectively and detected at the output end of the fiber. By using this scheme, optically detected electron spin resonance spectra were recorded for single NV centers. The results confirmed that such a tapered fiber-nanodiamond system can act as a magnetometer. Featured with excellent portability, convenient fabrication, and potential for further integration, the constructed system has been demonstrated to be a practical magnetometer prototype.

Abstract:A graphene-based electrical current sensor is proposed utilizing a microfiber coil resonator. Monolayer graphene sheet with a large sheet resistance is transferred onto the surface of a glass capillary rod. A microfiber is spirally wrapped around the graphene sheet to form a coil resonator. Heat generated from electrical current shifts the resonant wavelength because of the thermal effect in the microfiber resonator. The sensor exhibits a very good performance with a high sensitivity of 67.297 mu m/A(2), which is two orders of magnitude higher than that reported earlier. Our results show that microfiber-graphene-integrated devices have great potential for miniature and highly sensitive fiber sensors for monitoring electrical current. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:This study presents a high-sensitivity detection method for a specific biological molecule using a graphene-based optical biosensor. The use of functionalized magnetic nanoparticles as biological molecule carriers, which can be immobilized on the graphene surface under a magnetic field, improves the graphene surface-modification process. The effectiveness of our proposed method was successfully verified in an Ochratoxin A detection experiment. We obtained a detection limit of 0.01 ng.mL(-1) for Ochratoxin A, a good response in the range of 0. 01-5 ng.mL(-1), and a good function of the biomolecule specificity. We believe that the proposed method can expand the scope of applications of graphene-based optical biosensors, simplify the biomolecule-sensing process, and improve the sensitivity of graphene-based optical biosensors.

Abstract:Magnetometers based on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamonds have promising applications in fields of living systems biology, condensed matter physics, and industry. This paper proposes a portable and flexible all-fiber NV center vector magnetometer by using fibers to substitute all conventional spatial optical elements, realizing laser excitation and fluorescence collection of micro-diamond with multi-mode fibers simultaneously and efficiently. An optical model is established to investigate multi-mode fiber interrogation of micro-diamond to estimate the optical performance of NV center system. A new analysis method is proposed to extract the magnitude and direction of the magnetic field, combining the morphology of the micro-diamond, thus realizing μm-scale vector magnetic field detection at the tip of the fiber probe. Experimental testing shows our fabricated magnetometer has a sensitivity of 0.73 nT/Hz1/2, demonstrating its feasibility and performance in comparison with conventional confocal NV center magnetometers. This research presents a robust and compact magnetic endoscopy and remote-magnetic measurement approach, which will substantially promote the practical application of magnetometers based on NV centers.

Abstract:An intensity-demodulated fiber-optic magnetometer is proposed and experimentally investigated, which is fabricated via fusion splicing a segment of photonic crystal fiber (PCF) between single-mode fibers (SMFs), with the cladding air holes of PCF filled with magnetic fluid. Using the magneto-optical properties of the magnetic fluid, the transmission spectrum is changed with an external magnetic field. Based on the intensity variations in the transmission spectrum, the magnetic field is detected, and a sensitivity of 0.238 dB/mT is obtained at 1550.03 nm with the length of PCF 5.5 cm. By converting light signals into electrical signals, a sensitivity of 0.003 V/mT is achieved. The fiber-optic magnetometer possesses the advantages of simple fabrication, compact/robust structure, and low cost.

Abstract:A general, overarching theme in nanotechnology is the integration of multiple disparate fields to realize novel or expanded functionalities. Here, we present a graphene enabled, integrated optoelectromechanical device and demonstrate its utility for biomolecular sensing. We experimentally achieve an ultrawide linear dynamic sensing range of 5 orders of magnitude of protein concentration, an improvement over state-of-the-art single mode nanosensors by approximately 2-3 orders of magnitude, while retaining a subpicomolar lowest detection limit. Moreover, the ability to monitor and characterize adsorption events in the full optoelectromechanical space allows for the extraction of key intrinsic parameters of adsorbates and has the potential to extend the capabilities of nanosensors beyond the traditional binary-valued test for a single type of molecule. This could have significant implications for molecular detection applications at variable concentrations, such as early disease detection in biomedical diagnostics.

Abstract:The linear measuring range is limited by the relative magnetic permeability of magnetic fluid (MF) in tradition fiber magnetic field sensors utilizing MF refractive index modulation effect. The article proposes a fiber optic sensor with the help of MF magneto-shape effect, which can extend linear measuring range. The magneto-shape effect is not only related to the relative magnetic permeability of MF, but also to the magnetic field distribution on the concave, which can expand the linear measurement range of magnetic field. The sensing probe consists of single mode fiber (SMF)-air-MF-air-SMF. The measuring range of sensing structure can reach 402.1 Gs, the sensitivity is 180 pm/Gs from Gs and 81 pm/Gs at Gs. The response times of structure reach 50 ms and 137 ms at 45.5 Gs and 91.2 Gs, respectively. In addition, the linear measurement range of structure with magneto-shape effect is twice as high as that based on magneto-refractive index modulation effect under the premise of using the same MF. The sensing structure possesses the characteristics of fast response time, highly sensitive and large linear measurement range.

Abstract:Graphene, a novel form of the hexagonal honeycomb two-dimensional carbon-based structural material with a zero-band gap and ultra-high specific surface area, has unique optoelectronic capabilities, promising a suitable basis for its application in the field of optical fiber sensing. Graphene optical fiber sensing has also been a hotspot in cross-research in biology, materials, medicine, and micro-nano devices in recent years, owing to prospective benefits, such as high sensitivity, small size, and strong anti-electromagnetic interference capability and so on. Here, the progress of optical fiber biochemical sensors based on graphene is reviewed. The fabrication of graphene materials and the sensing mechanism of the graphene-based optical fiber sensor are described. The typical research works of graphene-based optical fiber biochemical sensor, such as long-period fiber grating, Bragg fiber grating, no-core fiber and photonic crystal fiber are introduced, respectively. Finally, prospects for graphene-based optical fiber biochemical sensing technology will also be covered, which will provide an important reference for the development of graphene-based optical fiber biochemical sensors.

Abstract:Portable quantum sensors are crucial for developing practical quantum sensing and metrology applications. Fiberized nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamonds have emerged as one of the most promising candidates for compact quantum sensors. Nevertheless, due to the difficulty of coherently controlling the ensemble spin and noise suppression in a large volume, it often faces problems such as reduced sensitivity and narrowed bandwidth in integrated lensless applications. Here, we propose a fluorescence signal treatment method for NV spin ensemble manipulation by the exponential fitting of spin polarization processes, instead of integrating the photon emission. This enables spin state readout with a high signal-to-noise ratio and applies to the pulse sensing protocols for large-volume NV spins. Based on this, we further developed a fiberized diamond-based AC magnetometer. With an XY8-N dynamical decoupling pulse sequence, we demonstrated a T-2-limited sensitivity of 8 pT/root Hz and T-1-limited frequency resolution of 90 Hz over a wide frequency band from 100 kHz to 3 MHz. This integrated diamond sensor leverages quantum coherence to achieve enhanced sensitivity in detecting AC magnetic fields, making it suitable for implementation in a compact and portable endoscopic sensor. Abstract:Graphene's featureless optical absorption, ultrahigh carrier mobility and optical modulation capacity would enable a new breed of optical devices with novel photonics characteristics. The complex refractive index (CRI) of graphene can be modulated by its local boundary conditions when molecules are attaching on the surface of the graphene layer, leading to change in the CRI of graphene, which would induce altered properties of the evanescent wave propagating between the graphene film and optical waveguide. In this paper, a novel fiber-optic sensor concept that integrates the graphene film onto a microfiber is proposed to detect the molecular concentration based on TE intensity measurement. The theoretical investigation shows that such a sensor could offer a solution for realization of a variety of high sensitivity and fast response molecular sensing in biological, medical and chemical fields.
