Abstract:We propose an ultra-compact optical 90° hybrid with the smallest length of 107μm, consisting of a wedge-shaped 2 × 4 MMI coupler connected with a 2 × 2 MMI coupler using silicon nanowaveguide technology. Neither cascaded phase shifters nor waveguide crossings are attached to the proposed 90° hybrid in coherent receiving system. The proposed device is demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) with 220nm thick top-silicon layer and 2μm thick buried oxide layer. A high performance of the proposed 90° hybrid is exhibited experimentally with a high extinction ratio larger than 20dB, an excess loss mostly less than 0.5dB, a common mode rejection ratio better than -20dB and phase deviation within the range of 5° over C-band spectral range.

Abstract:Low-loss, broadband, and low phase deviation optical 90 degrees hybrids based on 2 x 4 multimode interference couplers are firstly demonstrated using Si3N4 on SiO2 technology. Only a simple traditional design method of MMI based on self-imaging theory and a single-stripe Si3N4 waveguide geometry with only one step etching process are utilized. The characterization of the fabricated devices is carried out over a wide spectral window of 1520-1610 nm, showing that the measured phase error is less than 8 degrees, and common-mode rejection ratios (CMRRs) are better than -20 dB. The measured total loss of the fabricated device including a 90 degrees hybrid and a 3-dB coupler is <1 dB in a bandwidth over 80 nm. Our analysis also shows large fabrication tolerance with width of +/- 0.1 mu m or length of +/- 3 mu m.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally demonstrated a compact, broadband, and low-loss-mode-evolution-based 2 x 23 dB coupler on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The waveguide widths and separations of the coupler were tapered in an optimal manner using the shortcuts to the adiabaticity method. The coupler, with a similar to 70 mu m total length and 200 nm feature size, exhibited <0.3 dB measured excess loss over a broadband wavelength range from 1500 to 1600 nm. Balanced and unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometers fabricated for validation showed extinction ratios larger than 27 and 23 dB, respectively, over a 100 nm bandwidth. Abstract:CMOS-compatible broad-band and efficient edge couplers are presented in this paper. The couplers are based on SiON ridge waveguides and silicon inverted tapers, no requirement on partially etching in fabrication processes. The measured coupling losses of ~ 2dB are proved with the calculation results, the broad-band range of more than 100nm range.

Abstract:Coherent optical communication is a key communication technology featuring high sensitivity and capacity. As the key component of a coherent optical receiver, the 90 degrees hybrid has been realized by several conventional designs, showcasing high performance and still room for improvement in compactness. While inverse design is a promising method for improving the compactness of the photonic devices, the previous inverse-designed 90 degrees hybrids have limited performance, needing the high-precision lithography process. Here, we present a compact and fabrication-friendly 90 degrees hybrid developed by semi-inverse design. It exhibits simulation performance of an excess loss <= 0.9 dB, a common mode rejection ratio better than -24 dB, and a phase error better than +/- 4 degrees in the C band, matching the state-of-the-art conventional design counterparts; meanwhile, the footprint of 4.5 x 32.5 mu m(2) is 4-fold smaller. Importantly, this 90 degrees hybrid fabricated by a commercial 130 nm photolithography process exhibits practical measured performance even in the presence of a -20 nm waveguide sidewall offset. Its experimental performance is on par with that of the state-of-the-art inverse-designed counterpart fabricated by e-beam lithography. Further, a coherent optical receiver was experimentally demonstrated based on it and four SiGe photodetectors, featuring a bit error rate of 5.21 x 10(-4) (below the FEC limit) when receiving a 50 Gbps QPSK optical signal with a signal power of -11.8 dBm. This work can promote the application of inverse design in developing complex functional photonic devices with high compatibility with the commercial semiconductor foundry.

Abstract:An optical 90 degrees hybrids based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) 4x4 MMI couplers have been fabricated in 340nm top silicon using E-Beam technology. Below 2.2 degrees phase deviation of the hybrids for the across C-band of TE mode have been simulated, which is well satisfied with the typical systems requirements. The measured optical transmission powers from port to port show that the devices function well as a 6dB power divider with excess loss around 1dB at wavelength lambda=1550nm for TE mode. The measured transmission spectra of the 4x4 MMI coupler are seriously affected by the FP resonance noise, which bring in error in phase deviation testing.

Abstract:In this Letter, a 1 × 3 polarization-insensitive optical power splitter based on cascaded tapered silicon waveguides is proposed and experimentally demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator platform. By utilizing the particle swarm optimization algorithm and the finite difference time domain method, the structural parameters of the coupling regions are carefully designed to achieve polarization-insensitive property, compact size, low insertion loss, high uniformity, and broad bandwidth. The coupling length can be as short as 7.3 µm. Our measurement results show that, at 1550 nm, the insertion losses of the fabricated device operating in transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarizations are, respectively, 0.068 dB and 0.62 dB. Within a bandwidth from 1525 to 1575 nm, the insertion loss is lower than 0.82 dB and the uniformity is less than 1 dB for the fabricated device operating in TE polarization, while the fabricated device operating in TM polarization can have an insertion loss smaller than 1.50 dB and a uniformity lower than 1 dB from 1528 to 1582 nm.

Abstract:Edge coupler is a key component of silicon-based optoelectronic chips, which dramatically reduces the coupling loss between fibers and transmission waveguides. Here, we propose an ultralow-loss three-step silicon edge coupler based on a 130 nm CMOS process. By replacing the silicon substrate with a material with a lower refractive index than silicon oxide, the silicon leakage loss and polarization-dependent loss can be significantly improved. This structure avoids the existence of a cantilever, which enhances the mechanical strength of the edge coupler. Coupling with standard single-mode fiber, the simulation results demonstrate that the TE/TM mode has an ultralow loss of 0.63/1.08 dB at 1310 nm and 0.57/1.34 dB at 1550 nm, and the 0.5 dB bandwidth covering the entire communication band is about 400 nm. In the entire communication band, the polarization-dependent loss is less than 0.8 dB. Furthermore, we propose a taper shape design method based on mode analysis, which can be adapted for any taper to improve its compactness. Compared with the parabolic shape, the coupling loss of the edge coupler with a length of 460 μm for the TE mode is improved by 0.3 dB on average, this edge coupler provides a feasible solution for fiber-to-chip coupling and is perfectly suitable for wavelength division multiplexing applications in optical communications.

Abstract:A novel self-aligning SIOB (SIlicon Optical Bench) for fully passive alignment of optical components is proposed for integrated transceiver modules. The coupling efficiency from laser diode directly to fiber is about 8%(1) in theory because of severe mode mismatch and large NA difference. To pursue high coupling efficiency, a ball lens is added between laser diode and fiber. The calculations and simulations are done to optimize the optical system according to optical component specifications. The coupling efficiency is up to 45%. We designed the layout and fabricated the SIOB in (100) silicon wafer to obtain the demanding cavities by MEMS technology.

Abstract:Based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder lattice filter, an eight-channel silicon photonic (de-)multiplexer with flat passband is demonstrated in the O-band. The insertion loss of the device is -0.55~-2.48dB and the channel crosstalk is below -7dB. The FSR and channel spacing are about 36nm and 4.4nm respectively.

Abstract:A coupler is proposed to interface a hybrid dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide (HDLPW) with a silicon photonic slab waveguide. The HDLPW is firstly designed and optimized to attain the best tradeoff between the mode confinement and the propagation distance. The designed coupler is inspired from the taper configuration and numerically modeled through finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. The results demonstrate that a high confinement and low loss of the energy is achieved from a silicon photonic slab waveguide into the dielectric slot of area 50×200nm2 in the HDLPW. The transmission attained through the coupler with a compact size of 400nm is found to be as high as 80% (1dB). Further, the planar nature of taper configuration makes the coupler easy to fabricate using the state-of-the-art CMOS facilities. The proposed coupler is useful in enabling the integration between photonic and hybrid plasmonic waveguides and thus realizing on-chip hybrid integrated circuits.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate silicon-on-insulator (SOI) channel waveguides with propagation loss and $r$ = 10 $\mu$$\text{m}$ bends with bending loss as low as 2 dB/cm and 0.02 dB/90 $^{\circ }$ in the broad wavelength range of 3.68–3.88 $\mu$ $\text{m}$. We also indicate the limitation of SOI waveguide loss in mid-infrared wavelength by analyzing loss mechanisms. Based on this high-performance mid-infrared waveguide, we systematically analyze the coupling efficiency of various directional couplers, which are critical and commonly used building blocks for on-chip light routing and power splitting. By varying coupling length and sweeping wavelength, the performance of directional coupler with various gap separations is meticulously investigated in 3.68–3.88 $\mu$ $\text{m}$. A experimental database for directional coupler with any power splitting ratio is provided. Our results offer a promising broadband platform for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and applications that require precise control of coupling such as racetrack resonator in the mid-infrared region.

Abstract:A compact optical demultiplexer with etched diffraction grating (EDG) is designed and fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) material. Several 90degrees turning mirrors are used to bend the waveguides, and the size of the EDG-based demultiplexer is minimized to only 16 x 1.7 mm(2). The crosstalk is about -18 dB. The on-chip loss is about 18.2 dB, which is composed of about 16.9 dB excess loss and 1.3 dB diffraction loss. Measures to improve the performance are discussed.
