Abstract:Cu-doped TiO2 nanoparticles are prepared and used as semiconductor materials of photoanode to improve the performance of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). UV–Vis spectroscopy and variable temperature spectroelectrochemistry study are used to characterize the influence of copper dopant with different concentrations on the band gap energies of TiO2 nanoparticles. The prepared Cu-doped TiO2 semiconductor has avoided the formation of CuO during hydrothermal process and lowered the conduction band position of TiO2, which contribute to increase the short circuit current density of DSSCs. At the optimum Cu concentration of 1.0at.%, the short circuit current density increased from 12.54 to 14.98mAcm−2, full sun solar power conversion efficiencies increased from 5.58% up to 6.71% as compared to the blank DSSC. This showed that the presence of copper in DSSCs leads to improvements of up to 20% in the conversion efficiency of DSSCs.

Abstract:New up-conversion YbF3-Ho/TiO2 (UC/TiO2) nanoheterostructures are designed and explored as an efficient photoelectrode material to yield dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with enhanced performance. In this study, we analyze the photogenerated charge transfer properties of the UC/TiO2 nanoheterostructures via surface photovoltage (SPV) and transient photovoltage (TPV) techniques, and the interfacial dynamics of charge transfer and recombination processes in DSSCs using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and open circuit photovoltage decay (OCVD) techniques. It is found that these UC/TiO2 nanoheterostructures combine the upconversion function of YbF3-Ho and the semiconductive merits from TiO2. More importantly, the hetero-junction interface in the UC/TiO2 nanoheterostructures not only induces direct electron-injection from YbF3-Ho to TiO2 by utilizing near-infrared light, but also further improves the existing merits of TiO2 through facilitating the interfacial photoinduced charge separation, suppressing the photoinduced charge recombination and prolonging the lifetimes of excited electrons, which can give further improvement of the photovoltaic performances. When integrating the UC/TiO2 nanoheterostructures into DSSCs, an overall energy conversion efficiency of 8.0% is achieved. There is a 23% enhancement in the overall conversion efficiency and a 19% improvement in the photocurrent, compared to the pristine devices.

Abstract:Cu/N-codoped TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by sol–gel technique. Their structure, surface chemical composition, and optical absorption were characterized. All as-prepared samples consisted of the anatase phase. It was found that Cu atoms replaced Ti atom sites, and N atoms occupied the O atom sites and interstitial sites in the TiO2 lattice. The optical absorption results reveal that Cu/N codoping could greatly enhance the absorption of TiO2 in the entire visible region, leading to a decrease in the band-gap energy of TiO2. It also significantly enhanced the solar-driven catalytic activity of TiO2 in the degradation of methylene blue in solution. The sample 2.0 at% Cu/N-codoped TiO2 displayed the highest solar-driven catalytic efficiency among all tested samples.

Abstract:A composite TiO2 photoelectrode structure is explored to optimize the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) properties. The composite TiO2 photoanodes consist of two nanoparticular TiO2 layers with different size and thickness. The impact of film thickness on the performance of DSSCs was also investigated. In the optimized composite photoelectrode structure with large sized TiO2 nanoparticle as light scattering layer, the significantly improved performance of DSSC with 25% increase of current density and 13.1% increase of conversion efficiency was experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:The titanium dioxide nanotubes (TiNTs) were directly fabricated from commercial P25 TiO2 via alkali hydrothermal transformation. The optimized synthesis, thermal and hydrothermal stability, and consequent optical properties of the titanate nanotubes were systematically studied. The TiO2 nanotubes were characterized by transmission electron microscopy. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were constructed with films made of grown TiO2 nanotubes as working electrodes. The nanocrystalline TiO2 pastes were prepared with PEG (Mw 20000) and as made TiO2 nanotubes. The titania thin films were grown by screen printing method in order to efficiently control the DSSC fabrication process. The microstructures of nanoporous films in solar cells were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) analysis. A metal-free organic dye (referred to as D102 dye) was used as a sensitizer. A high conversion efficiency of light-to-electricity of around 6% under illumination of simulated AM1.5 sunlight (65mW/cm2) was achieved with the TiO2 nanotube cell. Compared with the case of DSSCs with TiO2 nanoparticles, the open-circuit voltage and fill factor of DSSCs with TiO2 nanotubes increased significantly. The related mechanisms are discussed.

Abstract:The SrTiO3-coated TiO2 (TiO2/SrTiO3) electrodes prepared by radio frequency magnetron sputtering are used to improve the performance of dye-sensitized TiO2 solar cells by means of surface modification. The structural and performance characterizations reveal that the TiO2/SrTiO3 electrodes, in comparison with fresh TiO2 electrodes, have low density of oxygen vacancies, passivated surface states, and suppressed interfacial recombination effect, thus resulting in improved performance parameters of the cells. An optimized coating of SrTiO3 layer on the TiO2 film surface allows an enhancement of the power conversion efficiency from 4.78% to 5.91%.

Abstract:In this study, the dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) were assembled by using natural dyes extracted from roselle and red phoenix as sensitizer coated fluorine-doped tin dioxide substrate (FTO) plate used a counter electrode for nanocrystalline TiO2. We investigated the formation of modified titanium dioxide on dye-sensitized solar cells by simultaneous dyeing with supercritical carbon dioxide fluid. The photoelectrode is made of compact layer and scattering layer. Supercritical carbon dioxide fluid extracted natural dyestuff and synchronous dyed photoelectric. The photoelectric conversion efficiency is the best at the dyeing parameters of 3000 psi, 50 oC, and 30 minutes. Experimental results show that adding a scattering layer to the compact layer can improve the conversion efficiency. SEM can observe that the polyethylene glycol-added scattering layer has more pore structures in which improves the electrode’s ability to capture sunlight. The conversion efficiency of 0.13% can be obtained by using 9:1 mixed dyes of anthocyanin and chlorophyll. The photoelectric conversion efficiency with the P25/R-type/PEG scattering layer is about 30% higher than that of a single compact layer. Finally the paper proposes a schematic diagram of the dye-sensitized solar cell.

Abstract:Zn+Mg co-doped TiO2 and the pure TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by the hydrothermal method. The pure TiO2 and Zn+Mg co-doped TiO2 were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron miscroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, UV–vis diffuse reflectance absorption spectra. Under a simulated solar light irradiation of 100mWcm−2, the cell based on doped TiO2 electrode achieved a conversion efficiency of 9.07%, which is noticeably increased by 26.7% compared with undoped TiO2 based DSSC (7.16%). The enhancement of conversion efficiency of the Zn+Mg co-doped TiO2 was attributed to the positive shift of the flat band potentials and fast electron transport in TiO2 films. The mechanism was suggested by intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy and intensity modulated photovoltage spectroscopy measurement.

Abstract:In this study, well-crystallized TiO2 nanoparticles with average size of -20 nm were synthesized by hydrolysis of titania salt in aqueous medium. The effect of the optical properties of the obtained titania particles based thin films with different thickness on the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells were investigated. Differential thermal analysis/thermo-gravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to characterize the morphology, structure and crystal formation of the obtained samples. The optical properties such as reflectance and transmittance of the photoanodes with different thickness were systematically investigated. The reflectance property increased with increasing the film thickness, however, the transmittance property showed the opposite way. The improved scattering property with increasing the film thickness facilitated efficient utilization of solar spectrum, which was verified by incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency. The maximum energy conversion efficiency of 5.0% was achieved on photoelectrode film with 17.8 microm.

Abstract:The TiO2 and Sb-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by the hydrothermal method and were characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. The photoelectric conversion efficiency of the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on 1mol% Sb-doped TiO2 electrode achieved 8.13%, which is noticeably higher than that of the undoped DSSCs (7.36%). The improvement of the performance of Sb-doped DSSCs was attribute to the positive shift of the conduction band, which is beneficial to electron injection efficiency from the LUMO of the dye to the TiO2 conduction band. Intensity-modulated photocurrent and photovolatage spectroscopic analysis reveals that the electron transport and recombination have influence on the performance of the DSSCs.

Abstract:In order to improve the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC), graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)/titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanofibers (NFs) are added into the photoanode of DSSC as an additional layer. g-C3N4 is prepared by high-temperature calcination. Through sol–gel method and electrospinning technology, we prepare g-C3N4/TiO2 NFs. The material properties of g-C3N4/TiO2 NFs are characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). From the measurements of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), incident photon to current efficiency (IPCE), and ${J}-{V}$ characteristics, the performances of the DSSCs are analyzed, including impedance parameters, short-circuit current density, open-circuit voltage, fill factor, and photoelectric conversion efficiency. The results show that the addition of g-C3N4/TiO2 NFs is able to enhance the photovoltaic performance. The photoelectric conversion efficiency of the modified DSSC is increased to 5.22%. Compared with the photoelectric conversion efficiency of the DSSC without modification (4.11%), it is an increase of 27%.

Abstract:An efficient method using a polymer dispersion (PD) based on it copolymer of styrene and butyl acrylate to prepare TiO2 electrodes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) was introduced. The obtained TiO2 nanoporous film was investigated by scanning clectron microscopy (SEM) and Brunauer-Emniett-Teller (BET) analysis, A porous structure with pore size distribution From tells of nanometers to several hundred nanometers or even micrometers wits characterized. This offered the film a feature of high haze factor and porosity. When using the film as photoanode, a quasi-solid-state DSC was successfully fabricated. The device showed an improved per-weight-efficiency by a factor of 2.7, resulting from the reduced interfacial resistance and the enhanced light scattering effect revealed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and transmittance spectroscopy, respectively. The developed PD-based colloid is promising to be applied ill production on it large scale as a result of its simple prescription and stability during storage. A proposal to further improve the porous film is also introduced at the end of the paper.
Efficient Organic-Dye-Sensitized Nanocrystalline Tio2 Solar Cells

Abstract:We have developed dye-sensitized nanocrystalline TiO2 solar cells (DSSCs) based on organic-dye photosensitizers. DSSCs based on the organic dyes gave good performance of incident-photon-to-current conversion efficiencies in the range of 400 to 800 nm. Solar energy-to-electricity conversion efficiencies of up to 7.6% were obtained with DSSCs based on coumarin dyes (NKX-2677 and NKX-2883) under AM 1.5 G irradiation (100 mW cm(-2)). Our results strongly suggest that organic-dye photosensitizers can be successfully designed for use in DSSCs and demonstrate the promising performance of DSSCs based on organic dyes.
Holistically Optimizing Charge Carrier Dynamics Enables High-Performance Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells and Photodetectors

Abstract:Charge carrier events across organic electronics are ubiquitous, and the derived optimization plays a crucial effect on improving the performance of organic electronics. Herein, a two-dimensional material (Ti3C2Tx) is incorporated into titanium dioxide (TiO2) to impart the Ti3C2Tx/TiO2 hybrid film enriched hydroxy group distribution, defect-negligible surface, upshifted work function, and enhanced conductivity yet electron mobility versus the pristine TiO2 film. Therefore, intensified photon-harvesting ability, reduced charge carrier recombination, and efficient charge carrier collection are realized for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on the Ti3C2Tx/TiO2 hybrid photoanode relative to control ones. Consequently, the modified DSSCs based on Z907 deliver superior efficiencies of 10.39 and 29.68% under 100 mW/cm2 illumination and ∼1.9 mW/cm2 dim light, respectively, being the highest values of Z907-based DSSCs. However, control devices only obtain lower efficiencies of 8.06 and 23.91% when undergoing the abovementioned illumination. On the other hand, the self-powered homologous photodetectors with the hybrid film as an electron-transporting layer present enhanced detectivity (1.69 × 1011 Jones) and a shortened responsivity of 0.26 s versus that of control ones (1.39 × 1011 Jones and 0.35 s). Our work implies that the Ti3C2Tx/TiO2 hybrid film features high potential for improving the performance of organic electronics for its effect of holistically optimizing charge carrier dynamics.
Enhancement of the Photoelectric Performance of Dye-sensitized Solar Cells by Sol-gel Modified TiO2 Films

Abstract:Modified TiO2 films have been prepared by combining commercial titania powders (Degussa P25) with sot-gel made by titanium chloride (Ti-sol). The result shows that clusters are formed by nanoparticles and large pores can be seen on the surface of the TiO2 films. The short circuit photocurrent density and photoelectric conversion efficiency of the solar cells are obviously enhanced compared with those without modification. The relationship between the photoelectric conversion efficiency and the amount of Ti-sol was investigated. With the addition of 30 wt% Ti-sol, the photoelectric conversion efficiency as high as 9.75% is achieved, increasing by 28.3% compared with the solar cells without modification.

Abstract:Since Gratzel's group reported an overall efficiency of 10% for dye-sensitized solar cell using cis-di(thiocyanato)bis(2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-dicarboxylate)ruthenium(II), many other institutions have tried to reproduce it. However, no other institutions have, so far, reported such a high efficiency. In order to develop high efficiency dye-sensitized solar cells, the tuning of TiO2 photoelectrode morphology towards optimization of solar energy conversion efficiency has been investigated. TiO2 photoelectrodes with six different structures, with layers of nanoparticles, light-scattering particles, and mixture of nanoparticles and light-scattering particles on the conducting glass at a desirable sequence and thickness. were designed and investigated. The profiles of photocurrent action spectra were compared in terms of light scattering and the suppression of light loss due to the back-scattering of large particles near the conducting glass. The data show that the multilayer structure is superior to the mono- and double-layer structure, with similar to85% of incident monochromatic photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) below 620 nm and similar to45% of IPCE at 700 nm. The solar-to-electric energy conversion efficiency of N719 dye-sensitized solar cell has been improved significantly from 7.6 to 9.8% by tuning the film structure from monolayer to multilayer. The best efficiency of 10.2% under illumination of simulated AM1.5 solar light (100 MW cm(-2)) was attained with a multilayer structure using an anti-reflection film on the cell surface. Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells based on electrolytes containing cobalt complexes as redox shuttles typically suffer a major limitation in terms of slow diffusion of those couples through the mesoporous TiO(2) film. This results in a drop of the photocurrent density, particularly at high incident light intensities, reducing the overall cell performance. This work illustrates how tuning the four characteristic parameters of the mesoporous TiO(2) layer, namely film thickness, particle size, pore size and porosity, by simply optimizing the TiCl(4) post-treatment, completely eliminates diffusion problems of cobalt(III/II) tris(2,2'-bipyridine) and at the same time maximizes the short-circuit photocurrent density. As a result, a power conversion efficiency of 10.0% at AM 1.5 G 100 mW cm(-2) was reached in conjunction with an organic sensitizer.
A Numerical Simulation and Impedance Study of the Electron Transport and Recombination in Binder-Free TiO2 Film for Flexible Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:A mesoporous TiO2 film consisting of different size nanocrystal particles without any organic binder was prepared on a conductive indium-tin oxide (ITO)-coated polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) plastic sheet by the doctor-blade method to fabricate flexible dye-sensitized photoanodes at 120 degrees C. It was found that the structure of the film affected the photovoltaic performance of the photoanode greatly. The mechanism of such effects was investigated both by simulation of porosity, surface area, average pore size, and electron diffusion coefficient of the mesoporous TiO2 film, and by impedance study for the electron transport and recombination in a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC). The results showed that the electron transport and recombination dominated the operation of the DSC with such flexible photoanodes. The optimum photoanode was achieved, and the largest conversion efficiency obtained was 3.93%.

Abstract:For the first time, it was found that low-valence additives could be employed to improve the conversion efficiency of dye sensitized solar cell. It was experimentally discovered that by forming nonstoichiometric compound, Ti3+ was located in the lattice of TiO2 film, generating surplus electrons within the film and affecting the morphology of TiO2 particle. The improvement of the conversion efficiency of the solar cell was mainly due to the increase of short circuit current along with the content of Ti3+. The surface of the TiO2 particle became more coarsely after TiCl3 added and the absorbed dye molecules was increased. It was another reason of the improvement of conversion efficiency.
