Abstract:Nanoporous anatase TiO2 films were fabricated by a screen-printing method, and CuxO quantum dots (QDs) were deposited on the TiO2 films through successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR). The amount of CuxO QDs on the TiO2 films are controlled by changing the number of SILAR cycles. The morphology, microstructure, optical, and photoelectrochemical properties of different CuxO sensitized TiO2 films (CuxO/TiO2) were investigated in detail. The nanoporous TiO2 film offers a large surface area for anchoring QDs. QD deposited samples exhibited a significant improvement in photoelectrochemical performance than the bare of TiO2. CuxO/TiO2, prepared with 7 SILAR cycles, showed the best photoelectrochemical properties, where the photocurrent density was enhanced to 500.01 μA/cm2 compared with 168.88 μA/cm2 of bare TiO2 under visible light. These results indicate that the designed CuxO/TiO2 structure possesses superior charge separation efficiency and photoelectrochemical properties.
Improved Performance of Dye Sensitized Solar Cells Using Cu-doped TiO2 As Photoanode Materials: Band Edge Movement Study by Spectroelectrochemistry

Abstract:Cu-doped TiO2 nanoparticles are prepared and used as semiconductor materials of photoanode to improve the performance of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). UV–Vis spectroscopy and variable temperature spectroelectrochemistry study are used to characterize the influence of copper dopant with different concentrations on the band gap energies of TiO2 nanoparticles. The prepared Cu-doped TiO2 semiconductor has avoided the formation of CuO during hydrothermal process and lowered the conduction band position of TiO2, which contribute to increase the short circuit current density of DSSCs. At the optimum Cu concentration of 1.0at.%, the short circuit current density increased from 12.54 to 14.98mAcm−2, full sun solar power conversion efficiencies increased from 5.58% up to 6.71% as compared to the blank DSSC. This showed that the presence of copper in DSSCs leads to improvements of up to 20% in the conversion efficiency of DSSCs.
Hierarchical Submicroflowers Assembled from Ultrathin Anatase TiO2 Nanosheets As Light Scattering Centers in TiO2 Photoanodes for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Hierarchical TiO2 submicroflowers (HTFs) were mixed with anatase TiO2 nanoparticles (TNPs) to fabricate efficient photoanodes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). HTFs with high specific surface area (98 m(2)g(-1)) and favorable dimension (similar to 660 nm) facilitate dye loading and light scattering of photoanodes, boosting the light harvesting capability of DSSCs. Moreover, due to the high crystallinity and reduced defects or grain boundaries, the HTFs embedded in the photoanodes act as efficient conductive pathways for charges. With excessive incorporation of HTFs, on the other hand, inevitable shrink of HTFs after calcination causes poor connectivity of TiO2 network and even cracks in the photoanodes, deteriorating the charge collection capability of DSSCs. As a result, a balance should be made between optical and photoelectrochemical characteristics of photoanodes via HTF introduction. The DSSC based on 10 wt % HTFs embedded photoanode exhibits the highest power conversion efficiency of 6.4%, which is 52.4% higher than that of DSSCs with TNP-based photoanodes. Abstract:New up-conversion YbF3-Ho/TiO2 (UC/TiO2) nanoheterostructures are designed and explored as an efficient photoelectrode material to yield dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with enhanced performance. In this study, we analyze the photogenerated charge transfer properties of the UC/TiO2 nanoheterostructures via surface photovoltage (SPV) and transient photovoltage (TPV) techniques, and the interfacial dynamics of charge transfer and recombination processes in DSSCs using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and open circuit photovoltage decay (OCVD) techniques. It is found that these UC/TiO2 nanoheterostructures combine the upconversion function of YbF3-Ho and the semiconductive merits from TiO2. More importantly, the hetero-junction interface in the UC/TiO2 nanoheterostructures not only induces direct electron-injection from YbF3-Ho to TiO2 by utilizing near-infrared light, but also further improves the existing merits of TiO2 through facilitating the interfacial photoinduced charge separation, suppressing the photoinduced charge recombination and prolonging the lifetimes of excited electrons, which can give further improvement of the photovoltaic performances. When integrating the UC/TiO2 nanoheterostructures into DSSCs, an overall energy conversion efficiency of 8.0% is achieved. There is a 23% enhancement in the overall conversion efficiency and a 19% improvement in the photocurrent, compared to the pristine devices.
Optimizing Photoelectrochemical Properties Oftio2by Chemical Codoping

Abstract:First-principles calculations reveal potentially optimal photoelectrochemical activity of anatase TiO2 by means of (C, S), (C, Se), or (N, P) codoping. It is found that the absorption edge is substantially redshifted to visible regime with overall spectra considerably better than monodoped TiO2. The resulting optical gap straddle the redox potentials of H2O remarkably well. The reason for the significant improvements is the direct chemical bonding between the codopants. We expect this generic band-structure tailoring scheme also applies to other photocatalytic systems and beyond.
Enhanced photoelectrochemical performance by synthesizing CdS decorated reduced TiO2 nanotube arrays

Abstract:The efficient utilization of solar spectrum and photo-induced charge transport are critical aspects in improving the light conversion efficiency of solar cells and hydrogen generation. In this work, reduced TiO2 nanotube arrays with CdS decoration were fabricated through the simple cathodic polarization of annealed TiO2 nanotube arrays followed by the chemical deposition of CdS nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the successful fabrication of the target material. UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectra showed a Burstein-Moss shift for reduced TiO2 NTs and a red shift of the absorption edge towards ca. 563 nm for CdS-decorated R-TiO2 NTs. Cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectra together demonstrate the decreased charge transport resistance for reduced TiO2 NTs. Under the excitation of monochromatic light at 420 nm, the proposed CdS-decorated reduced TiO2 NTs exhibit the maximum IPCE value of 30.12% in 1 M Na2SO3 electrolyte, which is almost twice higher than that achieved on CdS-decorated pristine TiO2 NTs. Therefore, the results here highlight the significance of charge transport in the light conversion process. The enhanced charge transport properties are ascribed to the increased number of electrons, which is brought about by the lattice oxygen vacancies (Ti(3+)) during the cathodic polarization.

Abstract:To meet the energy demand of modern society, we vote in renewable energy source particularly dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). In this regard, the efficiency of DSSCs was improved by self-doped Ti 3+ on Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) surface. The integration of Ti 3+ resulted in formation of oxygen vacancy that leads to generation of free electron. The formation of oxygen vacancy and free electron are observed in X-ray photo spectroscopy and the Electron Spin Resonance spectra. Further, oxygen vacancies in TiO 2 have helped in retards the photo-generated electron and hole pairs and fine-tuned the agglomerated particles into uniform particles. The presence of oxygen vacancies increases the local charge density of free electron, and this energy level of oxygen vacancy can serve as electron donor states. Markedly, the maximum photo-conversion efficiency of 6.5% was achieved for Ti 3+ -incorporated TiO 2 photoanode with the open-circuit voltage (V oc ) of 0.759 Voltage (V) and short-circuit current (J sc ) of 10.5 mA/cm 2 , whereas the pristine photoanode showed maximum photo-conversion efficiency of 5.0% with V oc of 0.767 V and J sc of 8.6 mA/cm 2 . The increase in photo-generated electron–hole pair was also validated by transient photocurrent measurement and impedance spectra. The results indicate the importance of the vacancies present in the metal oxide for developing DSSCs with high efficiency.

Abstract:The photocatalytic properties of TiO2 have aroused a broad range of research interest since 1972 due to its abundance, chemical stability, and easily available nature. To increase its overall activity, in the past few decades, much effort has been devoted to the fabrication of advanced TiO2‐based photocatalysts with visible‐light response and these photocatalysts have shown great potential in the field of solar energy utilization. Here, recent progress in the investigation of visible‐light responsive TiO2‐based materials are reviewed. Notably, the fabrication strategies and corresponding chemical/physical properties of visible‐light responsive TiO2‐based materials are described in detail, with a focus on bandgap engineering and junction engineering from the perspective of light absorption, charge transfer and separation, and surface reactions. Their applications in solar‐fuel production, organic synthesis, bacterial disinfection, pollutant degradation and nitrogen fixation are also discussed. Moreover, the new trends and ongoing challenges in this field are proposed and highlighted.

Abstract:In this study, well-crystallized TiO2 nanoparticles with average size of -20 nm were synthesized by hydrolysis of titania salt in aqueous medium. The effect of the optical properties of the obtained titania particles based thin films with different thickness on the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells were investigated. Differential thermal analysis/thermo-gravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to characterize the morphology, structure and crystal formation of the obtained samples. The optical properties such as reflectance and transmittance of the photoanodes with different thickness were systematically investigated. The reflectance property increased with increasing the film thickness, however, the transmittance property showed the opposite way. The improved scattering property with increasing the film thickness facilitated efficient utilization of solar spectrum, which was verified by incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency. The maximum energy conversion efficiency of 5.0% was achieved on photoelectrode film with 17.8 microm.

Abstract:A composite TiO2 photoelectrode structure is explored to optimize the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) properties. The composite TiO2 photoanodes consist of two nanoparticular TiO2 layers with different size and thickness. The impact of film thickness on the performance of DSSCs was also investigated. In the optimized composite photoelectrode structure with large sized TiO2 nanoparticle as light scattering layer, the significantly improved performance of DSSC with 25% increase of current density and 13.1% increase of conversion efficiency was experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:Increasing the quantum conversion efficiency in visible-light region is a key issue for the efficient usage of solar energy in the process of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Here, based on the N anion and S cation codoped TiO2 thin film photoanodes, we find experimentally and theoretically that the transport ability of visible-light-induced carriers can be notably enhanced by engineering the dopant electronic energy states. The hole transport resistivity is decreased from 6.8 × 104 to 1.3 × 104 Ω m via delocalizing the introduced bands, leading to an evident increase of the internal quantum efficiency from 5% to 20% at the visible-light region of 450–550 nm. Further DFT calculations exhibit that the split of the isolated band is induced by a strong N and S hybridization, which favors to decrease the hole effective mass and to improve the hole mobility by three times. The photocurrent of N − S codoped TiO2 thin film is thus twice that of monodoping cases, the best value for doping modified TiO2 thin film photoanodes. This work may provide not only a design principle but also a candidate for tailoring and optimizing TiO2 towards high PEC activity.
Sn-Doped TiO2 Photoanode for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:A series of Sn-doped TiO2 with Sn content ranging from 0.25 to 1 mol % were successfully synthesized by the hydrothermal method, and its performance as the photoanode of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) was investigated. TEM and XRD results indicate that the doping has no effect on the morphology and the crystal form of TiO2. The shift of XRD peaks observed at higher angle and the XPS results indicate Sn4+ ions incorporation into the TiO2 lattice. The flatband potential of Sn-TiO2 films shifts from -0.505 V (vs SCE) to -0.55 V with increasing Sn content from 0 to 1 mol at. %, which is beneficial to the increase of V-oc. The higher transfer rate of electrons in the Sn-doped TiO2 films than in the undoped TiO2 films is confirmed by IMPS measurements, which is favorable to the higher J(sc). IMVS and EIS measurements indicate that the charge recombination increases with increasing Sn doping content. Taking these factors, the optimum efficiency of 8.31% was found at 0.5 mol % Sn-doped TiO2 based DSSCs, which gave an efficiency improved by 12.1% compared with that of the cells based on pure TiO2 (7.45%). This work shows that Sn-doped TiO2 is a most interesting material and has good potential for application in photoenergy conversion devices.

Abstract:Feasibility was demonstrated for the use of low-dimensional CdSe@CdS particles with core@shell structure and 1.8-2.0 nm mean core diameter as a component in the FTO/TiO2/CdSe@CdS photoanode in photoelectrochemical solar cells with aqueous polysulfide electrolyte and copper sulfide-based counter-electrode. An average light conversion efficiency of 6.3% was achieved (at excitation intensity of 30 mW/cm2) in cells with the FTO/TiO2/CdSe@CdS photoanode and an FTO/TiO2/Cu2S counter-electrode produced by sulfidation of copper particles photochemically deposited onto the titanium dioxide surface.

Template-assisted Synthesis of Porous TiO2 Photoanode for Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:As for the efficient dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), one of the important goals is to increase the light harvesting efficiency to further improve the photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE). The excellent photoanode materials should possess a uniform porous structure, a large surface area, high crystallinity, and good stability. Herein, the porous TiO 2 electrode (named as S-1.5) with the above merits had been prepared by the simple template-assisted method with camphene as the pore-forming reagent. The surface area of the porous TiO 2 electrode can be tailored by introducing the amount of camphene. The porous TiO 2 layer with the optimal surface area directly adhered on the top of the ultra-thin P25 dense layer had been constructed and this unique electrode with a “double layers structure”, which named as S-1.5/P25. When DSSCs assembled with this photoanode, a desirable PCE of 8.31% had been achieved, which was obviously higher than that of the commercial P25 (7.62%) in parallel. The improved PCE can be attributed to the improved utilization of sunlight, the facilitated photo-generated electron transfer, and the reduced interface resistance. Meanwhile, the related characterization including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, intensity-modulated photovoltage spectroscopy, and intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy was characterized to explore the possible mechanism.
Enhancement of the Photoelectric Performance of Dye-sensitized Solar Cells by Sol-gel Modified TiO2 Films

Abstract:Modified TiO2 films have been prepared by combining commercial titania powders (Degussa P25) with sot-gel made by titanium chloride (Ti-sol). The result shows that clusters are formed by nanoparticles and large pores can be seen on the surface of the TiO2 films. The short circuit photocurrent density and photoelectric conversion efficiency of the solar cells are obviously enhanced compared with those without modification. The relationship between the photoelectric conversion efficiency and the amount of Ti-sol was investigated. With the addition of 30 wt% Ti-sol, the photoelectric conversion efficiency as high as 9.75% is achieved, increasing by 28.3% compared with the solar cells without modification.
Gold nanoparticles inlaid TiO2 photoanodes: A superior candidate for high-efficiency dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract:By designing a fine-controlled nanocomposite with Au nanoparticles (similar to 2 nm in size) directly inlaid in TiO2 as working electrode, efficiency (eta) of 10.1% for a dye-sensitized solar cell with an open-circuit photovoltage of 863 mV and a short-circuit photocurrent of 15.71 mA cm(-2) have been achieved, giving an enhancement of 97 mV in photovoltage, 63% in photocurrent and 84% in efficiency compared to the cell with pure TiO2 photoanode (eta = 5.5%). As compared to pure TiO2, besides the local-field optical enhancement near the TiO2 surface caused by plasma resonance of Au nanoparticles which increases the dye absorption and hence the amount of photogenerated charge contributing to the photocurrent, it is evidenced that not only the quasi-Fermi level of Au-TiO2 photoanode can be modulated to more negative potentials by controlling the mass ratio of Au-TiO2, but their mosaic nanostructure reduces the charge recombination rate effectively, both leading to a marked enhancement of photovoltage. Our results prove that the unique nanostructural, physical and chemical properties of the direct mosaic nanoarchitecture of similar to 2 nm Au and TiO2 make them valuable materials as working electrodes for DSSCs to achieve high photovoltage and hence further improve the performance.
Rational Design Of A Tripartite-Layered Tio2 Photoelectrode: A Candidate For Enhanced Power Conversion Efficiency In Dye Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:A tri-layered photoelectrode for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is assembled using single crystal hollow TiO2 nanoparticles (HTNPs), sub-micro hollow TiO2 mesospheres (SHTMSs) and hierarchical TiO2 microspheres (HTMSs). The bottom layer composed of single crystal hollow TiO2 nanoparticles serves to absorb dye molecules, harvest light due to its hollow structure and keep a better mechanical contact with FTO conducting glass; the middle layer consisting of sub-micro hollow mesospheres works as a multifunctional layer due to its high dye adsorption ability, strong light trapping and scattering ability and slow recombination rates; and the top layer consisting of hierarchical microspheres enhances light scattering. The DSSCs made of photoanodes with a tripartite-layer structure (Film 4) show a superior photoconversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.24%, which is 7.4% higher than a single layered photoanode composed of HTNPs (Film 1: 8.90%), 4.6% higher than a double layer-based electrode consisting of HTNPs and SHTMSs (Film 2: 9.03%) and 2.6% higher than a double layer-based electrode made of HTNPs and HTMSs (Film 3: 9.11%). The significant improvements in the PCE for tri-layered TiO2 photoanodes are mainly because of the combined effects of their higher light scattering ability, long electron lifetime, fast electron transport rate, efficient charge collection and a considerable surface area with high dye-loading capability. This study confirms that the facile tri-layered photoanode is an interesting structure for high-efficiency DSSCs.

Abstract:Developing an efficient and stable photocathode material for photoelectrochemical solar water splitting remains challenging. Herein, we demonstrate the potential of rutile TiO(2) as a photocathode by Rh doping with visible light absorption up to 640 nm and an onset potential of 0.9 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode.
