Abstract:Forming a 2D capping layer has been recognized as an effective strategy to improve both efficiency and stability of organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells. However, constructing a 2D/3D heterostructure is difficult for inorganic perovskites due to their resistance to cation exchange reaction. Here, we report an effective in situ growth method to form a 2D/3D heterostructure for inorganic CsPbI2Br perovskite. The 2D capping layer was found to form a type-II heterojunction with 3D perovskites, facilitating hole extraction at the perovskite/hole transport layer interface. When exposed to a humid environment, the 2D/3D perovskite films showed greatly enhanced phase stability as compared to the pristine 3D perovskite films. As a result, the optimized 2D/3D CsPbI2Br device reached a power conversion efficiency of 14.5% with improved short-circuit current and significantly enhanced device moisture stability.

Abstract:All-inorganic CsPbIxBr3-x (0≤x≤3) perovskites are expected to fundamentally solve the thermal stability issue of perovskite solar cell toward its final commercialization. However, the humidity stability of this class of all-inorganic perovskite is still not intrinsically tackled out. Herein, aminoquinoline is introduced to construct a thus far unreported one-dimensional (1D) perovskite, in which the distorted [PbI6]4- octahedra display a shoulder-by-shoulder arrangement along the [001] direction, and A-site quinoline (Aq) organic groups with π-π conjugate structure orderly distribute among the octahedra space. The structural incorporation of 1D Aq-PbI3(II) perovskite inside 3D CsPbI2Br perovskite is proved to be capable of improving the carrier transport ability, whilst enhancing its hydrophobic performances, which is associated with the unique structure of 1D Aq-PbI3(II) and lattice-matching heterojunction in 1D-3D perovskite. Consequently, the as-fabricated 1D-3D hybrid CsPbI2Br perovskite solar cell allows to increase the device VOC by a factor of 12%, yielding a power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 16.1%. Equally importantly, the corresponding 1D-3D perovskite solar cells demonstrate remarkably high stability more than 1300 h in comparison to the control 3D CsPbI2Br perovskite solar cell. This study provides a new strategy for the rational structure design of 1D-3D hybrid perovskite with high PCE and stability.

Abstract:The inorganic perovskite solar cells (IPSC) are promising in the context of simultaneously delivering high efficiency and good stability. Developing a high-performance and larger band gap IPSC is particularly in demand for commercialization due to their suitability to match with the prevailing silicon solar cells for tandem devices, while this is hindered by the poor morphology and phase stability of inorganic perovskite films. To address this issue, this work develops a combined method of nonstoichiometric composition and post-cation exchange to improve the morphology and phase stability of the CsPbI2Br IPSCs, and achieves a record efficiency of 17.80%. This work finds that excessive PbI2 regulates the CsPbI2Br film crystallization, and thus, a high-quality perovskite film with enlarged grains is obtained. Further depositing the formamidinium iodide on top of the CsPbI2Br perovskite induces cation exchange during the post-annealing process, which increases the phase stability of the perovskite film and significantly improves the device efficiency and stability. Therefore, this work provides an avenue toward high-performance IPSCs, via the nonstoichiometric and ion exchange method.

Abstract:Despite the rapid development of CsPbIxBr3−x (0 ≤ x ≤ 3) inorganic perovskite solar cells, associated with their superior thermal stability, their low moisture stability limits their commercial deployment. In this study, 1D-2D-3D multidimensional coupled perovskites are prepared by means of an in situ self-integration approach. This pioneering method allows incorporating thus far unreported 1D-Tpy2Pb3I6 and 2D-TpyPb3I6 (Tpy; terpyridine) perovskites. Heterojunction perovskites demonstrate superior stability against water in comparison with control 3D CsPbI2Br, which is related to the hydrophobicity of low-dimension (LD) perovskites. Remarkably, the spontaneous involvement of LD perovskites can adjust/reconstruct the interfacial structure. This modification allows releasing the residual strain, establishing effective charge transfer channels that increase the carrier transport ability. Accordingly, 1D-2D-3D hybrid CsPbI2Br perovskite solar cells demonstrate a stabilized power conversion efficiency as high as 16.1%, which represents a very significant improvement, by a factor of 43%, with respect to control 3D CsPbI2Br perovskite solar cell. Equally importantly, the multidimensional coupled perovskite solar cells exhibit extraordinary stability, well above 1000 h in ambient atmosphere.

Abstract:All-inorganic CsPbI 2 Br perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted intensive attention owing to their suitable bandgaps and excellent photo- and thermal stability, making them promising ideal top cells in high-performance monolithic all-perovskite tandem solar cells (all-PTSCs). However, CsPbI 2 Br PSCs are still facing a challenge due to their relatively low power conversion efficiency (PCE) and moisture sensitivity. Herein, a simple and effective in situ growth method was adopted to construct a two-dimensional/three-dimensional (2D/3D) heterostructure by spinning n -butylammonium bromide (BABr) on the top of a 3D CsPbI 2 Br perovskite film. The such fabricated high-quality 2D/3D CsPbI 2 Br film exhibits excellent hydrophobicity against moisture invasion, and a well-matched energy level with the hole transport layer (HTL) facilitating hole extraction at the perovskite/HTL interface. As a result, the optimized 2D/3D CsPbI 2 Br solar cell achieves an excellent PCE of 16.57% with improved stability. Based on this, we developed an all-PTSC having 2D/3D CsPbI 2 Br and MAPbI 3 as the optical absorption layer of top and bottom cells, respectively, along with a solution-processed PEDOT:PSS film with high conductivity and high transmittance as the recombination layer. The fabricated all-PTSC exhibits a PCE of 10.22% and an ultrahigh open-circuit voltage of 2.33 V, approaching the sum of the light voltages of the two sub-cells. Benefiting from the outstanding thermal stability and hydrophobicity of 2D/3D CsPbI 2 Br, the all-PTSC showed superior stability under heat and air. This work demonstrates that all-inorganic perovskites as the photo-response cores of top cells are appropriate candidates for the fabrication of efficient and stable monolithic all-PTSCs.

Abstract:The phase instability and large energy loss are two obstacles to achieve stable and efficient inorganic‐CsPbI3−xBrx perovskite solar cells. In this work, stable cubic perovskite (α)‐phase CsPbI2Br is successfully achieved by Pb(Ac)2 functioning at the grain boundary under low temperature. Ac− strongly coordinates with CsPbI2Br to stabilize the α‐phase and also make the grain size smaller and film uniform by fast nucleation. PbO is formed in situ at the grain boundary by decomposing Pb(Ac)2 at high‐temperature annealing. The semiconducting PbO effectively passivates the surface states, reduces the interface recombination, and promotes the charge transport in CsPbI2Br perovskite solar cells. A 12% efficiency and good stability are obtained for in situ PbO‐passivated CsPbI2Br solar cells, while Pb(Ac)2‐passivated device exhibits 8.7% performance and the highest stability, much better than the control device with 8.5% performance and inferior stability. This article highlights the extrinsic ionic grain boundary functionalization to achieve stable and efficient inorganic CsPbI3−xBrx materials and the devices.
Constructing an Interfacial Gradient Heterostructure Enables Efficient CsPbI3 Perovskite Solar Cells and Printed Minimodules

Abstract:Severe nonradiative recombination originating from interfacial defects together with the pervasive energy level mismatch at the interface remarkably limits the performance of CsPbI3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs). These issues need to be addressed urgently for high-performance cells and their applications. Herein, an interfacial gradient heterostructure based on low-temperature post-treatment of quaternary bromide salts for efficient CsPbI3 PSCs with an impressive efficiency of 21.31% and an extraordinary fill factor of 0.854 is demonstrated. Further investigation reveals that Br- ions diffuse into the perovskite films to heal undercoordinated Pb2+ and inhibit Pb cluster formation, thus suppressing nonradiative recombination in CsPbI3 . Meanwhile, a more compatible interfacial energy level alignment resulting from Br- gradient distribution and organic cations surface termination is also achieved, hence promoting charge separation and collection. Consequently, the printed small-size cell with an efficiency of 20.28% and 12 cm2 printed CsPbI3 minimodules with a record efficiency of 16.60% are also demonstrated. Moreover, the unencapsulated CsPbI3 films and devices exhibit superior stability.

Abstract:With the fast growth of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), inorganic perovskite, represented by Cs-based perovskite, consistently surpasses organic perovskite solar cells in regards of photovoltaic performance. Among them, CsPbIBr2 materials stand out for their excellent efficiency and stability in all-inorganic PSCs. Unfortunately, poor solar energy utilization results from the CsPbIBr2′s wide band gap, which severely limits light harvesting. This work proposes an all-inorganic CsPbIBr2/CsSnI3 heterojunction using CsSnI3 instead of HTL based on the matched band structure of CsSnI3 and CsPbIBr2, then simulations and optimizes it using SCAPS-1D software to increase solar energy utilization and cell efficiency. The results show that the CsPbIBr2/CsSnI3 perovskite heterojunction PSC extends the absorption spectral wavelength range from 600 nm in the visible area to 960 nm in the near-infrared region, which greatly improves solar energy utilization and is more favorable to photogenerated carrier migration. The device's performance is ideal after optimization when Voc = 1.0344 V, Jsc = 39.36 mA/cm2, FF = 89.43%, and PCE = 36.41%. The device efficiency of the optimized CsPbIBr2/CsSnI3 heterojunction is 36.41%, which is significantly higher than the PCE of 5.45% for a single layer of CsPbIBr2. Moreover, the CsPbIBr2/CsSnI3 solar cell can respond to near-infrared light, enabling it to generate power at night. Consequently, this work reveals that the constructed CsPbIBr2/CsSnI3 heterojunction PSCs can enable the bright future of Cs-based inorganic PSCs for practical applications in photovoltaics and optoelectronics.

1D Choline-PbI3 -Based Heterostructure Boosts Efficiency and Stability of CsPbI3 Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Defects in perovskite are key factors in limiting the photovoltaic performance and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Generally, choline halide (ChX) can effectively passivate defects by binding with charged point defects of perovskite. However, we verified that ChI can react with CsPbI3 to form a novel crystal phase of one-dimensional (1D) ChPbI3 , which constructs 1D/3D heterostructure with 3D CsPbI3 , passivating the defects of CsPbI3 more effectively and then resulting in significantly improved photoluminescence lifetime from 20.2 ns to 49.4 ns. Moreover, the outstanding chemical inertness of 1D ChPbI3 and the repair of undesired δ-CsPbI3 deficiency during its formation process can significantly enhance the stability of CsPbI3 film. Benefiting from 1D/3D heterostructure, CsPbI3 carbon-based PSCs (C-PSCs) delivered a champion efficiency of 18.05 % and a new certified record of 17.8 % in hole transport material (HTM)-free inorganic C-PSCs.

However, significant interfacial recombination of charge carriers in solar cells fabricated with this active layer, which is intrinsically associated with the unwanted conduction band misalignment between CsPbIBr2 and the commonly used TiO2 electron transport layer, has limited power conversion efficiency (PCE) values. Herein, we demonstrate successful conduction band alignment engineering at the TiO2/CsPbIBr2 heterojunction by modifying TiO2 with CsBr clusters. Such modification triggers a beneficial increase in the conduction band minimum (CBM) of TiO2 from -4.00 to -3.81eV and decreases the work function from 4.11 to 3.86eV, thus promoting favorable band alignment at the heterojunction, suppressing recombination, and improving extraction and transport of charge carriers. As a result, the carbon-based, all-inorganic CsPbIBr2 solar cells exhibit over 20% enhancement in average PCE. The champion device achieves a PCE of 10.71%, a record among pure CsPbIBr2-based cells, open-circuit voltage of 1.261V, and excellent stability.

Abstract:Although inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have made remarkable progress, ambient instability and serious nonradiative recombination loss greatly impede their further development. Herein, we develop a novel surface reconstruction process to in situ grow a 2D inorganic perovskite capping layer on a 3D CsPbI2Br perovskite surface via the dynamic methanol treatment and subsequent thermal annealing for simultaneously enhancing the stability and suppressing nonradiative recombination of inorganic CsPbI2Br PSCs. The dynamic methanol treatment removes the surface defective regions of CsPbI2Br perovskite and results in forming excessive PbI2 on the CsPbI2Br perovskite surface, and the subsequent thermal annealing triggers the surface reconstruction reaction of excessive PbI2 with CsPbI2Br that leads to in situ forming of a 2D CsPb2I4Br layer on the CsPbI2Br perovskite surface, which effectively decreases the defect density and enhances the stability of CsPbI2Br perovskite. As a result, the fabricated carbon-based CsPbI2Br PSC displays a power conversion efficiency of 14.29%. Moreover, the CsPbI2Br device with a 2D CsPb2I4Br layer displays superior stability, and the efficiency of the cell without encapsulation remains at over 90% of the original value after storing in ambient conditions for 900 h.

Abstract:Although organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) have achieved dramatic improvement in device efficiency, their long-term stability remains a major concern prior to commercialization. To address this issue, extensive research efforts are dedicated to exploiting all-inorganic PVSCs by using cesium (Cs)-based perovskite materials, such as alpha-CsPbI3. However, the black-phase CsPbI3 (cubic alpha-CsPbI3 and orthorhombic gamma-CsPbI3 phases) is not stable at room temperature, and it tends to convert to the nonperovskite delta-CsPbI3 phase. Here, a simple yet effective approach is described to prepare stable black-phase CsPbI3 by forming a heterostructure comprising 0D Cs4PbI6 and gamma-CsPbI3 through tuning the stoichiometry of the precursors between CsI and PbI. Such heterostructure is manifested to enable the realization of a stable all-inorganic PVSC with a high power conversion efficiency of 16.39%. This work provides a new perspective for developing high-performance and stable all-inorganic PVSCs.

Abstract:CsPbI3 perovskite solar cells have attracted intense research interest since the inorganic absorber layer has better thermal stability compared with organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites. However, CsPbI3 suffers from structural instability due to an easily induced phase transition from the photoactive to the photoinactive structure. Here, we clearly identify that the formation of an organic-inorganic hybrid structure by the incorporation of (CH3)2NH2+ into the CsPbI3 lattice is the key to stabilizing the photoactive perovskite structure and improving solar cell performance.

However, its device performance is restricted by the large energy level offset between CsPbI2Br and the most commonly used hole-transporting layer (HTL). Herein, multicarbazolyl-substituted benzonitrile (4t-5CzBn) is inserted into the interface between CsPbI2Br and HTL to form a uniform stepped (0.24 eV) interfacial energy level structure, which reduces the energy loss and boosts the hole extraction of CsPbI2Br PSCs. The incorporation of 4t-5CzBn induces the increase in open-circuit voltage and fill factor from 1.256 V and 74.5% to 1.335 V and 82.3%, respectively. The optimized device achieves a power conversion efficiency of 17.34%, which is among the highest reported values of CsPbI2Br PSCs. Besides the energy level tuning effect, the tert-butyl groups in 4t-5CzBn improve the moisture-resistance of CsPbI2Br PSCs. The unencapsulated device maintains over 75% of its initial efficiency after 700 h storage in air. These results demonstrate that the rational tuned energy level step benefits the performance improvement of CsPbI2Br PSCs.

Abstract:In situ prepared 2D/3D hybrid heterojunction perovskites have attracted increasing interest in the field of photovoltaics due to their combined merits of 2D and 3D perovskites as well as approved applications in regular structured (n–i–p) perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Nevertheless, in situ building a 2D phase on 3D inorganic perovskites still remains challenging probably due to the resistance of the Cs+ ion toward the exchange reaction with most organic cations. In this work, we report the facile building of the 2D phase with n = 1 using highly conjugated benzimidazolium iodine (BIZI) instead of imidazolium iodine (IZI) for the posttreatment on a 3D CsPbI2Br absorber. The combined spectroscopic results reveal that the posttreatment and the as-formed 2D (BIZ)2PbI3Br result in not only moisture proof for the 3D CsPbI2Br absorber but also remarkable defect suppression/passivation and efficient hole blocking at the CsPbI2Br/PC61BM interface. As a result, the inverted (p–i–n) PSCs with an optimized 2D/3D structure deliver remarkably improved photovoltaic performance along with enhanced ambient stability compared to control devices. Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) CsPb2Br5 exhibits intriguing functions in enhancing the performance of optoelectronic devices in terms of environmental stability and luminescence properties when composited with other perovskites in different dimensionalities. We built a type I three-dimensional (3D) CsPbBr3/2D CsPb2Br5 heterojunction through phase transition where CsPbBr3 quantum dots in situ grew into 2D CsPb2Br5. A thorough growth mechanism study in combination with excited state dynamic investigations via femtosecond spectroscopy and first-principles calculations revealed that the type I hierarchy enhanced the stability of the heterojunction and spurred its luminous quantum yield by prolonging the lifetime of photogenerated carriers. Mixing the heterojunction with other phosphors yielded white-light-emitting diodes with a color rendering index of 94%. The work thus not only offered one new avenue for building heterojunctions by using the "soft crystal" nature of perovskites but also disentangled the enhanced luminescence mechanism of the heterojunction that can be harnessed for promising applications in the luminescence and display fields.

Abstract:All-inorganic perovskite CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) and related materials are promising candidates for potential solar cells, light emitting diodes, and photodetectors. Here, a novel architecture made of CsPbX3 /ZnS quantum dot heterodimers synthesized via a facile solution-phase process is reported. Microscopic measurements show that CsPbX3 /ZnS heterodimer has high crystalline quality with enhanced chemical stability, as also evidenced by systematic density functional theory based first-principles calculations. Remarkably, depending on the interface structure, ZnS induces either n-type or p-type doping in CsPbX3 and both type-I and type-II heterojunctions can be achieved, leading to rich electronic properties. Photoluminescence measurement results show a strong blue-shift and decrease of recombination lifetime with increasing sulfurization, which is beneficial for charge diffusion in solar cells and photovoltaic applications. These findings are expected to shed light on further understanding and design of novel perovskite heterostructures for stable, tunable optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Inorganic halide perovskites have been demonstrated as a promising alternative for light absorption because of their improved thermal stability compared with organic-inorganic halide perovskites. However, low power conversion efficiency and phase instability are major hindrances to their application. Here, a straightforward approach, by adding a layer of CsBr on the top of CsPbI3, is reported for high-efficiency and phase-stable CsPbI3-based solar cells. Characterizations demonstrate that the bromide ion can migrate from the surface into the bulk of CsPbI3, mitigating the nonuniform depth distribution of iodide in the CsPbI3 absorber and passivating the bulk defects. Impressively, the light illumination can induce secondary-ion redistribution, which is identified as a crucial process to further enhance the carrier extraction efficiency, strengthen the lattice stability, and improve the film homogenization. Accordingly, a high efficiency of 17% is obtained for the CsPbI3-based solar cell. Moreover, the unencapsulated device exhibits remarkable phase stability, maintaining 93% of its initial efficiency under room temperature after being stored in the nitrogen glovebox for over 5000 h.
