Abstract:All-inorganic perovskites have emerged as a new class of phosphor materials owing to their outstanding optical properties. Zero-dimensional inorganic perovskites, in particular the Cs4PbBr6-related systems, are inspiring intensive research owing to the high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and good stability. However, synthesizing such perovskites with high PLQYs through an environment-friendly, cost-effective, scalable, and high-yield approach remains challenging, and their luminescence mechanisms has been elusive. Here, we report a simple, scalable, room-temperature self-assembly strategy for the synthesis of Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3 perovskite composites with near-unity PLQY (95%), high product yield (71%), and good stability using low-cost, low-toxicity chemicals as precursors. A broad range of experimental and theoretical characterizations suggest that the high-efficiency PL originates from CsPbBr3 nanocrystals well passivated by the zero-dimensional Cs4PbBr6 matrix that forms based on a dissolution-crystallization process. These findings underscore the importance in accurately identifying the phase purity of zero-dimensional perovskites by synchrotron X-ray technique to gain deep insights into the structure-property relationship. Additionally, we demonstrate that green-emitting Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3, combined with red-emitting K2SiF6:Mn4+, can be used for the construction of WLEDs. Our work may pave the way for the use of such composite perovskites as highly luminescent emitters in various applications such as lighting, displays, and other optoelectronic and photonic devices.
Epitaxial Growth of CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) Perovskite Quantum Dots via Surface Chemical Conversion of Cs2 GeF6 Double Perovskites: A Novel Strategy for the Formation of Leadless Hybrid Perovskite Phosphors with Enhanced Stability

Abstract:Lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have received increased attention owing to their intriguing optoelectronic and photonic properties. However, the toxicity of lead and the lack of long-term stability are potential obstacles for the application of LHPs. Herein, the epitaxial synthesis of CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) perovskite quantum dots (QDs) by surface chemical conversion of Cs2 GeF6 double perovskites with PbX2 (X = Cl, Br, I) is reported. The experimental results show that the surface of the Cs2 GeF6 double perovskites is partially converted into CsPbX3 perovskite QDs and forms a CsPbX3 /Cs2 GeF6 hybrid structure. The theoretical calculations reveal that the CsPbBr3 conversion proceeds at the Cs2 GeF6 edge through sequential growth of multiple PbBr6 4- layers. Through the conversion strategy, luminescent and color-tunable CsPbX3 QDs can be obtained, and these products present high stability against decomposition due to anchoring effects. Moreover, by partially converting red emissive Cs2 GeF6 :Mn4+ to green emissive CsPbBr3 , the CsPbBr3 /Cs2 GeF6 :Mn4+ hybrid can be employed as a low-lead hybrid perovskite phosphor on blue LED chips to produce white light. The leadless CsPbX3 /Cs2 GeF6 hybrid structure with stable photoluminescence opens new paths for the rational design of efficient emission phosphors and may stimulate the design of other functional CsPbX3 /Cs-containing hybrid structures.
In Situ Formation of a 2D/3D Heterostructure for Efficient and Stable CsPbI2Br Solar Cells

Abstract:Forming a 2D capping layer has been recognized as an effective strategy to improve both efficiency and stability of organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells. However, constructing a 2D/3D heterostructure is difficult for inorganic perovskites due to their resistance to cation exchange reaction. Here, we report an effective in situ growth method to form a 2D/3D heterostructure for inorganic CsPbI2Br perovskite. The 2D capping layer was found to form a type-II heterojunction with 3D perovskites, facilitating hole extraction at the perovskite/hole transport layer interface. When exposed to a humid environment, the 2D/3D perovskite films showed greatly enhanced phase stability as compared to the pristine 3D perovskite films. As a result, the optimized 2D/3D CsPbI2Br device reached a power conversion efficiency of 14.5% with improved short-circuit current and significantly enhanced device moisture stability.

Abstract:CsPbBr3, as an all‐inorganic perovskite, has attracted considerable research interest due to its excellent optoelectronic properties. However, because the electronic properties of CsPbBr3 are not satisfactory, the relatively low on/off ratio and long photoresponse time of CsPbBr3 devices limit further applications. In this work, a CsPbBr3 device with high performance is successfully fabricated through a simple process using a CsPbBr3 colloid, and the photoresponse performance of the device is investigated under different external factors. By inserting a thin HfO2 layer, CsPbBr3‐based heterostructure devices exhibit much better performances, including an enhanced photocurrent of ≈10 µA, a responsivity of 45.05 A W−1, a detectivity of 9.12 × 1010 Jones, an external quantum efficiency of 12445%, and rise/fall times of 600 µs/300 µs, respectively. A physical mechanism is proposed to explain the photoresponse property promotion in CsPbBr3 devices, which can be attributed to the tunneling effect between CsPbBr3 and Si through the thin HfO2 layer. More importantly, the optoelectrical properties of the proposed CsPbBr3/HfO2/Si heterostructure device can be modulated through both Vds and Vgs. This work offers a valuable strategy and a practical scheme that can be generalized to other perovskite and heterostructure devices.

Abstract:Cesium lead halide perovskite crystals have attracted widespread attention due to their excellent photoelectric properties. However, their intrinsic instability and the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) sharply dropped in the solid-state limit their practical applications. Besides, the current synthesis strategies either need a variety of ligands, or an anti-solvent, which will result in potential environmental risks. Herein, we address the above issues simultaneously by embedding CsPbBr3 in a large bandgap Cs4PbBr6 matrix by high-speed mechanical mixing without using any ligands and highly toxic anti-solvent. Changing the molar ratio of PbBr2/CsBr, centrifugation time, and the solution concentration, the optimized CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6 show a high PLQY of up to 79%. In addition, mechanistic studies show that the origin of green luminesce of CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6 microcrystals is closely related to the CsPbBr3 inclusion theory, but not to the Br vacancy theory, in which CsPbBr3 embedded in Cs4PbBr6 to form a CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6 heterostructure. By taking advantage of the heterostructure, the photostability and thermostability of CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6 are significantly enhanced. In addition, the high optical and temperature/humidity-stable performances of CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6 are verified by applying them to white LEDs (WLEDs). The electroluminescence intensity of WLEDs remains 70% of the original one after being stored in a chamber with high temperature and high humidity (85 °C/RH 85%) for 40 h, and the device displays luminous efficiency of 74.5 lm/W at 20 mA. This result provides a solid foundation for their scale applications in lighting, displays, and other optoelectronic and photonic devices.

Abstract:The heterostructure composed of lead chalcogenides (PbX, X=S, Se, Te) and halide perovskite CsPbI3 has recently emerged as a promising candidate for optoelectronic devices. This study uses theoretical investigations using first-principles calculations with the VASP software to understand the structural, electronic, and optical properties of the PbX(X=S, Se, Te)/CsPbI3 heterostructure. Appropriate lattice mismatch rates(4.6%, 2.4%, 3.8%) and similar octahedral frameworks are confirmed, ensuring the feasibility of constructing the PbX/CsPbI3 heterostructure. Electronic property calculations unveiled the physical mechanisms enhancing luminescence efficiency. The I-type band alignment at the PbX/CsPbI3 interface(-5.27eVPbS/CsPbI3. PbSe/CsPbI3 performs best in terms of stability, charge density transfer, and optical properties. Furthermore, under the premise of ensuring stability, different optical absorption characteristics can be achieved by adjusting the composition of Se atoms in PbSe/CsPbI3. This work provides a theoretical basis for the physical mechanisms behind enhancing the performance of PbX/CsPbI3 heterostructures as visible-to-near-infrared optoelectronic materials. It offers a promising avenue for the design of high-performance visible-to-near-infrared optoelectronic materials. </pbx

Abstract:In comparison with monocomponent perovskite single crystals, the heterojunctions of perovskite single crystals provide great chances to tune the optoelectronic properties. In this work, we develop an in situ solution growth approach to fabricate perovskite single-crystal heterojunctions with different compositions, which are MAPbCl3@MAPbBr3, CsPbBr3@MAPbBr3, and CsPbBr3@MAPbCl3. It was found that the as-formed gradient interface with mixed halogen components plays an important role in releasing the lattice mismatch for the in situ growth. Benefiting from the quasi-type II-like energy level alignment between MAPbCl3 and MAPbBr3 single-crystal counterparts, the heterojunction-based device exhibited an enhanced responsivity of 0.28 mA/W and a specific detectivity of over 109 Jones under the photovoltaic working mode even with a 1 mm electrode distance. This work provides a facile route to fabricate functional perovskite single crystals with rational design for photodetection applications.

Abstract:All-inorganic lead halide perovskites have attracted tremendous interest for their excellent stability when compared with hybrid perovskites. Here we report a large-area growth of monocrystalline all-inorganic perovskite thin films and further patterning them into heterostructure arrays. We show that highly oriented CsPbBr3 microcrystal domains can be readily grown on muscovite mica substrates with a well-defined epitaxial relationship, which can further expand and eventually merge into large-area monocrystalline CsPbBr3 thin films with an excellent optical quality. Taking a step further, we show the large-area CsPbBr3 thin film can be further patterned and selectively transformed into CsPbI3 using a selective anion-exchange process to produce CsPbBr3–CsPbI3 lateral heterostructure arrays with spatially modulated photoluminescence emission and an apparent current rectification behavior. Abstract:Mixed one-dimensional (1D) and three-dimensional (3D) heterostructures, with synergistic advantages of different dimensionalities, have shown unique optical properties due to their large junction areas and high absorption cross-sections, which may also bring superior electrical and optoelectronic performances. However, due to the challenge in designing and constructing a proper 1D-3D p-n junction, their electronic properties and potential application are still unclear. Here, a type of 1D-3D ZnO/CsPbBr3 p-n junction is constructed by liquid-phase growth of crystalline CsPbBr3 microplates on ZnO nanowires, which exhibit excellent properties of p-n diode and serve as high-performance rectifier and photodetector. As a rectifier, it shows characteristics of ambipolar transfer and its rectification ratio reaches up to 106. As a photodetector, it covers light from ultraviolet to visible light. High photoelectric switching ratio (107), responsivity (3.5 × 103 A/W), detectivity (6.6 × 1013 Jones) and external quantum efficiency (1.7 × 106%) are obtained under 254 nm light illumination. Meanwhile, the switching ratio, responsivity, detectivity and external quantum efficiency are 103, 41.5 A/W, 4.96 × 1012 Jones and 1.086 × 103%, respectively, under 473 nm laser illumination. The decay length of photo-generated carriers in ZnO/CsPbBr3 heterojunction is demonstrated longer than that in original CsPbBr3 crystal, which is further controlled by adjusting the potential barriers between the CsPbBr3 and ZnO with a tunable external electric field.

Abstract:Ion migration is significantly enhanced in lead-halide perovskites with a soft crystal lattice, which can promote the formation of a heterogeneous interface between two such materials with different halide-anion compositions. Here we have deposited a single CsPbI3 nanocrystal (NC) on top of an individual CsPbBr3 microplate to create a mixed-halide CsPbBrxI3-x (0 < x < 3) NC by means of the anion exchange process. The formation of a CsPbBrxI3-x/CsPbBr3 heterostructure is confirmed by the much-enlarged geometric volume of the CsPbBrxI3-x NC as compared to the original CsPbI3 one, as well as by its capability of receiving photogenerated excitons from the CsPbBr3 microplate with a larger bandgap energy. The quantum nature of this heterostructure is reflected from single-photon emission of the composing CsPbBrxI3-x NC, which can also be bulk-like during phase segregation to demonstrate a red shift in the photoluminescence peak that is opposite to the common trend observed in smaller-sized mixed-halide NCs.
Morphology and Luminescence Regulation for CsPbBr3 Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes by Controlling Growth of Low-Dimensional Phases.

Abstract:At present, the high defect density and strong nonradiative recombination rate of all-inorganic cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) seriously inhibit the improvement of their quantum efficiency. In this paper, the addition of a short-chain additive, diethylammonium bromide (DEABr), aims to control the generation of a quasi-2D large n-phase to optimize the surface morphology and construct two-dimensional/three-dimensional (2D/3D) heterojunction perovskite structures to enhance the EL efficiency of PeLEDs. Through Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) characterization, we confirmed that the 2D phase grains with a low potential are locally formed on the surface of the perovskite film under the action of DEABr. The existence of the 2D phase effectively improved the surface morphology and suppressed surface defects. In addition, the in situ constructed 2D/3D heterojunction perovskite structure further increases the exciton radiative recombination rate and significantly improves the electroluminescent performance. By optimizing its doping concentration, the optimal all-inorganic PeLED displays a current efficiency (CE) of 30.3 cd A-1, an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 9.6%, and a maximum brightness of 32,500 cd m-2. According to our results, the formation of 2D structures on the surface of the CsPbBr3 film can improve surface morphology issues and optoelectronic properties of the film.
Deconvoluting the energy transport mechanisms in all-inorganic CsPb 2 Br 5 /CsPbBr 3 perovskite composite systems

Abstract:CsPb 2 Br 5 /CsPbBr 3 composite systems have received considerable attention among numerous lead halide perovskite materials due to their significantly enhanced photoluminescence intensity and stability against moisture. However, the luminescence mechanism of CsPb 2 Br 5 based materials remains controversial, which significantly hinders the further material design and utilization for optoelectronic devices. In this work, to deconvolute their luminescent mechanisms, high-quality CsPb 2 Br 5 crystals without any undesired by-products and impurities have been first prepared by a microwave-assisted synthesis method. The luminescence-inactive characteristics of the material are then confirmed by the steady-state absorption, photoluminescence, transient absorption spectra, and time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy. The prepared CsPb 2 Br 5 crystals exhibit excellent crystallinity and enhanced thermal stability, particularly that they can maintain their crystalline structures in polar organic solvents. By simply manipulating the ratios of different precursor materials, it is witnessed that the green emission comes from the CsPbBr 3 adhered, nucleated, and grown on the CsPb 2 Br 5 crystals. Ultrafast transient absorption measurements in visible and terahertz spectral regions reveal that with the help of phonon scattering-assisted hopping at interfacial states, intersystem crossing dominates the electron transfer process in the composite crystals. As a result, the CsPb 2 Br 5 and CsPbBr 3 interact extensively with each other. Meanwhile, the Auger recombination rate and the defect-related non-radiative process are suppressed in the composite crystals, thereby enhancing the fluorescence of composite crystals. This work has not only deconvoluted the controversial and unclear luminescent mechanisms of CsPb 2 Br 5 materials but also established a pathway to design and enhance the fluorescence of materials for technological applications.

Abstract:Perovskite light-emitting devices (PeLEDs) have emerged as a highly promising contender for the next generation of lighting and display technologies. During the nucleation and crystallization process, numerous defects are commonly formed on the surface and grain boundaries as a result of the ionic characteristics of perovskite, especially in an air environment. These defects ultimately contribute to the deterioration of the photoelectron properties. In this study, CsPbI(3 )nanocrystals (NCs) solution is introduced into ethyl acetate antisolvent as an additive, resulting in the high-quality perovskite films under ambient conditions. The introduction of CsPbI3 NCs has been found to increase the grain size and improve the uniformity of perovskite films while also effectively passivating defects. More significantly, the utilization of CsPbI3 NCs leads to the formation of a 0D/3D local heterojunction that is distributed throughout the MAPbI(3 )film. These distributed heterojunctions significantly increase both the carrier concentration and the photoluminescence performance. With the incorporation of doped perovskite films, Silicon (Si) -based PeLEDs demonstrate enhanced efficiency, achieving a maximum external quantum efficiency of 12.6% in ambient conditions. Additionally, these devices exhibit a prolonged operational half-life of 80 minutes. This study presents a novel methodology for fabricating high-efficiency Si-based PeLEDs that exhibit exceptional electroluminescence characteristics.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) perovskites represent a class of promising nanostructures for optoelectronic applications owing to their giant oscillator strength transition of excitons and high luminescence. However, major challenges lie in the surface ligand engineering and ambient stability. Here, we show that air-stable quasi-2D CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets can be formed in the matrix of Cs4PbBr6 nanosheets by reducing the thickness of Cs4PbBr6 to ∼7.6 nm, the scale comparable to the exciton Bohr radius of CsPbBr3. The 2D behavior of excitons is evidenced by the linear increase of the radiative lifetime with increasing temperature. Moreover, the wide-bandgap Cs4PbBr6 plays roles of surface passivation and protection, which leads to good photoluminescence properties without the photobleaching effect and with ambient stability for over 1 month. Our work demonstrates a unique quasi-2D heterostructure of perovskite nanomaterials, which may either serve as a workbench for studying the exciton recombination dynamics or find application in high-performance optoelectronic devices.
The design and performance optimization of all-inorganic CsPbIBr2/CsSnI3 heterojunction perovskite solar cells

Abstract:With the fast growth of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), inorganic perovskite, represented by Cs-based perovskite, consistently surpasses organic perovskite solar cells in regards of photovoltaic performance. Among them, CsPbIBr2 materials stand out for their excellent efficiency and stability in all-inorganic PSCs. Unfortunately, poor solar energy utilization results from the CsPbIBr2′s wide band gap, which severely limits light harvesting. This work proposes an all-inorganic CsPbIBr2/CsSnI3 heterojunction using CsSnI3 instead of HTL based on the matched band structure of CsSnI3 and CsPbIBr2, then simulations and optimizes it using SCAPS-1D software to increase solar energy utilization and cell efficiency. The results show that the CsPbIBr2/CsSnI3 perovskite heterojunction PSC extends the absorption spectral wavelength range from 600 nm in the visible area to 960 nm in the near-infrared region, which greatly improves solar energy utilization and is more favorable to photogenerated carrier migration. The device's performance is ideal after optimization when Voc = 1.0344 V, Jsc = 39.36 mA/cm2, FF = 89.43%, and PCE = 36.41%. The device efficiency of the optimized CsPbIBr2/CsSnI3 heterojunction is 36.41%, which is significantly higher than the PCE of 5.45% for a single layer of CsPbIBr2. Moreover, the CsPbIBr2/CsSnI3 solar cell can respond to near-infrared light, enabling it to generate power at night. Consequently, this work reveals that the constructed CsPbIBr2/CsSnI3 heterojunction PSCs can enable the bright future of Cs-based inorganic PSCs for practical applications in photovoltaics and optoelectronics.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites are particularly emerging for optoelectronic applications in light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, and solar cells, due to their flourishing photophysical properties. However, the poor stability of three-dimensional (3D) lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) significantly hampers their optoelectronics and photovoltaics applications. Embedding 3D perovskites into zero-dimensional (0D) perovskites crystals and doping ions of appropriate elements into host lattices provide effective approaches to improve the stability and optical-electronic performance. In this paper, the millimeter-scale Mn-doped and undoped CsPbBr 3 /Cs 4 PbBr 6 perovskite crystals were successfully fabricated by one-step slow cooling method. We systematically investigated the effects of Mn 2+ ions doping on PL performance and stability of CsPbBr 3 /Cs 4 PbBr 6 crystals. Compared with undoped crystals, the existence of Mn 2+ ions not only blue-shifted the PL peak, but also improve the luminescence performance and stability of the prepared millimeter-sized crystals. Moreover, doping Mn 2+ ions can increase the proportion of radiation recombination at low temperature, may due to Mn 2+ ions can effectively accelerate the decay of a dark exciton by the magnetic mixing of bright and dark excitons.In addition, green LED devices with high efficiency packaged as-grown crystals are explored, which promising further application in display backlight.

Abstract:Perovskite Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3 heterojunction with a strongly carrier-confined effect is emerging as a promising luminescent material for perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). However, it is a big challenge to construct the heterojunction on a molecular scale to fully excavate this confinement effect for efficient electroluminescence efficiencies of PeLEDs. Herein, we report a water-induced construction of Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3 heterojunction for efficient PeLEDs via adding trace water with strong polarity. Benefiting from its strong carrier confinement effect, this heterojunction has a higher exciton binding energy (94.7 meV) and a lower nonradiative decay rate constant (0.007 ns−1) compared to that of single CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs) (14.1 meV and 0.031 ns−1). Based on it, the as-fabricated PeLEDs exhibit a greatly-improved maximum current efficiency of 43.62 cd A−1 and a peak EQE of 11.31%, approximately 1.5 times that of CsPbBr3 NCs (28.43 cd A−1 and 7.78%). Evidently, this work provides an important way toward the construction of Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3 heterojunction and then promotes the commercial development of heterojunction-like optoelectronics.

Abstract:The dimensionality of semiconductors has a crucial role in determining their properties. Recently, metal halide perovskites have been demonstrated with many exciting applications, attracting wide attention to further their development for advanced optoelectronics, such as photovoltaics, photodetectors, light-emitting diodes, and lasers. At length scales down to nanoscale regimes, surface features as well as quantum confinement effects become dominant in regulating the material properties of perovskite materials. In past years, our group focus on the synthesis and characterization of metal halide perovskites with different configurations, ranging from bulk films, microplates, nanosheets, to nanowires. The corresponding physical properties and device applications were also systematically studied based on their widely tunable dimensionality, morphologies, and compositions. Specifically, for perovskite bulk films, surface defects and bulk structural order significantly affect their device performance. Through optimizing processing techniques, self-assembled quasi-2D perovskite films with graded phase distribution were successfully prepared. Gradient type-II band alignments along the out-of-plane direction of perovskites with spontaneous separation of photo-generated electrons and holes are obtained, which is later employed to construct self-powered vertical-structure photodetectors for the first time. Without any driving voltage, the device exhibited impressive performance with the responsivity up to 444 mA/W and ultrashort response time down to 52 μs. In addition, to assess the intrinsic material properties of crystalline perovskites, freestanding MAPbI 3 nanosheets and lead-free Cs 3 Sb 2 I 9 microplates were fabricated by two-step chemical vapor deposition method, in which excellent optoelectronic performance (e.g., responsively of MAPbI 3 nanosheet is measured to be 40 A/W) together with ultra-fast response speed (down to 58 μs) and superior thermal stability were obtained. For nanostructured perovskites, understanding the dimensional features and their impact on the materials and devices is becoming increasingly important. Lately, we reported the direct vapor-liquid-solid growth of single-crystalline all-inorganic lead halide perovskite (i.e., CsPbX 3 ; X = Cl, Br, or I) NWs. These NWs exhibited high-performance photodetection with the responsivity exceeding 4489 A/W and detectivity over 7.9 × 10 12 Jones toward the visible light regime. Field-effect transistors based on individual CsPbX 3 NWs were also fabricated to show the impressive carrier mobility of 3.05 cm 2 /Vs, being higher than other all-inorganic perovskite devices. Besides, the realization of high-mobility CsPbBr 3 NW devices is reported via a simple surface charge transfer doping strategy. After MoO 3 decoration and device fabrication, the hole mobility of CsPbBr 3 /MoO 3 core-shell NW device is significantly enhanced to 23.3 cm 2 /Vs. All these results provide important guidelines for the further improvement of these perovskite nanostructures for practical utilization.
