Abstract:β-Sialon/Ti(C,N) composites were prepared using low and middle grade bauxite and ilmenite as raw material,while coke as reducing agent in high purity nitrogen atmosphere through carbothermal reducrion-nitridation(CRN).The main phases of low and middle grade bauxite are kaolinire(Al2O3•2SiO2•2H2O) and (Al2O3•H2O)2 and ilmenite mainly contain ilmenite(FeTiO3) and rutile(TiO2).The reaction products of bauxite are the β-Sialon(Z=3,Si3Al3O3N5) while those of ilmenite are TiC and Fe.The results showed that the main phases are β-Sialon,Ti(C,N),Al2O3 and Fe when the reaction temperature is at 1400°C holding for 4 hours(10wt% ilmenite and 90wt% bauxite as raw material).However,β-Sialon decomposes into 21R at 1450°C and into 15R and AlN at 1500°C.So 1400°C is selected as the proper temperature to synthesize β-Sialon/Ti(C,N) composites.At 1400°C,the β-Sialon crystals with the largest quantity grow well and show long column in shape.With the increase of the reacrion temperature β-Sialon begin to decompose,the β-Sialon crystals change to short columnar,with the number decreasing quickly.

Abstract:High purity and nano-sized Li2TiO3 powder was synthesized by a newly developed sol-gel method using water as the reaction medium and LiNO3 and Ti(C6H6O7)(2) as raw materials at the temperature as low as 500 degrees C. Phase analysis, morphology, microstructure and linear shrinkage behavior of the powder were determined by XRD, TEM, SEM, dilatometer et al. The experimental results showed that the primary particle size of the obtained powder was as small as 40 nm. The powder possessed excellent sinterability, exhibiting a linear shrinkage of 14% while sintered to 1200 degrees C. The sintered pellets fabricated from the powder at 1100 degrees C for 4 h reached a density as high as 90% T.D. The process developed in this work was simple and convenient to realize mass production. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All fights reserved.

Abstract:Sialon-Ti(N,C) composites were synthesized using pyrophyllite, rutile and coke powers as raw materials via carbothermal reduction-nitridation reaction. Phase composition, microstructure and micro-area element of the synthesized resultant were analyzed by X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrometer. The effects of synthesis temperature and carbon addition content on phase compositions and mierostructure of the resultants were investigated. The results showed that the main phases of the samples which were composed of pyrophyllite and rutile with a mass ratio of 4:1, with addition of 50% excessive carbon, synthesized at 1 500 ℃ were β-sialon, 15R-sialon, TiN0.7C0.3, corundum, and a little β-SIC. Content of β-sialon and TiN0.7C0.3 increased with the increase of the synthesis temperature from 1 400 ℃ to 1 550 ℃. The content of carbon addition had an important influence on phase composition when the samples were synthesized at same temperature. It was beneficial for synthesizing sialon-TiCN,C) composite material when 50% excessive carbon was added in the samples. O'-sialon and Si2N20 will appear in resultants while the addition of carbon content was small, but β-sialon will transform to 15R-sialon while too much carbon added in the samples.The grain size of TiN0.TC0.3 crystal in sialon-Ti(N,C) composites was about 200 nm when 50% excessive carbon added in sample and synthesized at 1 500 ℃.

Abstract:Diphase Sialon was synthesized successfully using low grade bauxite by carbonthermal reduction-nitridation. The influences of synthesizing temperatures (1300, 1400, 1500 and 1600 degrees C) and carbon content (stoichiometric content, exceeding 10%, 50% and 100%) on the final products were studied by XRD, SEM and EDS. The results showed that alpha-Sialon and beta-Sialon were obtained using low grade bauxite as raw materials and carbon of stoichiometric content as reducing agent by carbonthermal reduction-nitridation reaction in flow nitrogen at 1600 degrees C, under the pressure of 0.9 MPa for 3 h. The morphology of a-Sialon crystals was like hexagonal column.

Abstract:β-Sialon/Ti(C,N) composites were prepared by carbothermal reduction-nitridation reaction(CRN) using low grade bauxite and ilmenite as starting materials at different temperatures,the ratio of ilmenite and bauxite was 50∶ 50,the composition and microstructure of products were studied by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscope(SEM).The results showed that the best reaction temperature was 1250 ℃,because the phases of products mainly were β-Sialon(z=3),Ti(C,N) and Al2O3 at that reaction temperature.When the sintering temperature was under that temperature,the products still had the phase of mullite,which illustrated the reaction was not complete.When the reaction temperature was higher than the best reaction temperature,the main product was AlN.The microstructure of β-Sialon was prismatic;the shape of AlN was lamellar and that of iron was globular.

Abstract:Sialon-SiC composites were synthesized from kyanite tailings via the carbothermal reduction nitridation (CRN) technique. The phase composition, morphology, and microstructure of the CRN samples were investigated by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and elected-area electron diffraction. A brief discussion on the synthesis mechanism of CRN process was investigated based on the thermodynamic analysis of the SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 -C-N 2 system. The results show the phase compositions depended on the synthesis temperature. With the increasing heating temperature, SiO 2 was first changed into Si 2 N 2 O and then transformed into Si 3 Al 3 O 3 N 5 through reacting with N 2 , Al 2 O 3 , and C. At the same time, the excess SiO 2 changed into SiC by a carbothermal reduction reaction. The optimized synthesis temperature for the CRN reaction was found to be at 1550°C for 4 h. The Si 3 Al 3 O 3 N 5 and SiC phases were proved coexisting in the same CRN particle. This transformation provided a feasible utilization route of kyanite tailings for high-temperature application.

Abstract:In this study, β-Sialon/Al2O3/TiN diphase powder was synthesized using low-grade bauxite and rutile via carbothermal reduction-nitridation. The phase transitions of low-grade bauxite and rutile in the carbothermal reduction and nitridation process were analyzed by XRD, SEM and EDS. The effects of different reaction parameters such as reaction temperature, rutile addition on the phase composition and microstructure of products were analyzed. The results showed that β-Sialon/Al2O3/TiN powder was prepared using low-grade bauxite and rutile as raw materials and coke as reducing agent by carbothermal reduction-nitridation reaction in flowing nitrogen atmosphere of 0.03 MPa at 1350-1375 °C, for 4 h.

Abstract:Al2O3-SiC composite powders were prepared from kyanite tailings mixed with 20% excess carbon coke via carbothermal reduction (CR) reaction. The optimised synthesis condition for synthesising Al2O3-SiC composite powders was at 1600 degrees C for 6 h. The equilibrium relationship curves of the condensed phases were presented and the temperature dependence of the phase composition was also studied. The results show that irregular Al2O3 and SiC grains first formed at 1500 degrees C, and the elements C, O, Al, and Si randomly distributed in the each crystal particles. The amount of Al2O3-SiC composites increased with the increasing synthesis temperature and reaction time. Finally, Al2O3-SiC composite bulk materials were further prepared by pressureless sintering using the synthesised Al2O3-SiC composite powders as raw materials, and their mechanical properties were investigated in detail. All these results indicate that the CR method can offer a niche application for the development of kyanite tailings.

Abstract:Single phase Sialon was synthesized successfully from fly ash by carbothermal reductionnitridation reaction in this paper. The effects of synthesizing temperature (1200°C, 1300°C, 1400°C and 1450°C) and carbon content (stoichiometric content, exceeding 10%, 50% and 100%) on the final production were studied by XRD and SEM. Synthesis mechanism of β-Sialon was also analysized. The results indicated that single phase β-Sialon with z=3 was obtained using fly ash as raw materials and carbon black of stoichiometric content as reducer by carbothermal reduction- nitridation reaction in flow nitrogen at 1450°C for 3h. Temperature and content of carbon had significant effect on the synthesis of β-Sialon.

Abstract:Silicon nitride (Si3N4) powder with tunable α/β-Si3N4 relative contents was synthesized from waste silica fume using carbothermal reduction nitridation (CRN) at a relatively low temperature range of 1400–1500°C. The effects of the carbon source, CRN temperature and raw materials ratio (Carbon-to-Silica fume) on phase assembly and micro-morphology of the products were investigated. Fabrication of α-Si3N4/β-Si3N4 from waste silica fume by CRN was achieved at temperatures as low as 1400°C. Carbon black was found to be more suitable than coke and graphite for use as the reductant. Elevated temperature was beneficial for the formation of β-Si3N4, whilst excessive carbon black promoted the formation of α-Si3N4. Thus, the α-Si3N4/β-Si3N4 relative contents could be effectively tailored by adjusting the CRN temperature and carbon concentration of the initial mixtures. In addition, the bi-modal crystals of the whiskers and the short columns strongly influenced the morphologies of the product.

Abstract:β-Sialon/SiC composite powder with irregular morphology was prepared directly by carbothermal reduction under nitride atmosphere of solid waste, coal-mine schist, at 1 500°C for 3h with different graphite additions. The effect of different proportions of graphite additions on powder composites was investigated. With increasing of graphite additions, the powder particle sizes decreased. At the same time,a amount of whiskers were found on the surface the powders which were not crushed yet. The mechanism of the growth of whisker on the surface is studied according to VLS mechanism.

Abstract:TiN-Si3N4 composite powders were prepared by carbothermal reduction nitridation using rutile and quartz as raw materials. The influence of temperature and carbon addition on the phase evolution and microstructure of the products were investigated. The equilibrium phase diagram of Si-C-N-O and Ti-C-N-O system at different temperatures under 0.2 MPa nitrogen pressure was drew. The results show that the optimum parameters for synthesizing TiN-Si3N4 by carbothermal reduction nitridation process are carbon addition of stoichiometric content, temperature of 1873 K for 4 h and nitrogen pressure of 0.2 MPa. The produced TiN-Si3N4 in this experiment exist in granular and hexagonal columnar shape, and the average particle size of the synthesized powders is 2 ~ 10 μm.

Abstract:β‐Sialon materials were synthesized by nitriding reduction reaction using secondary aluminum dross and Si powder as the raw materials. The results indicate that the phases of products were stratified, in which the lower layer was pure β‐Sialon and the upper layer was mainly β‐Sialon, Al2O3 and spinel. This may be caused by the transformation of the Si powder from solid to liquid phase and the metal oxide floating to the upper layer under the action of gravity. The aspect ratio of elongated β‐Sialon grains rapidly increased as the Si/Al ratio increased, and β‐Sialon grains finally became fibrous. Rod‐like and fluffy whiskers were observed and their growth mechanisms are the double‐stage vapor–liquid–solid mechanism at the base and vapor–solid mechanism at the tip. In the upper layers, the whiskers mainly grew on the surface and the gap, and the reactions were solid–gas reaction and gas–gas reaction, respectively.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:This paper reports carbothermal preparation of nano -sialon powders via a sol-gel route. At first, homogeneous precursor powders with an atomic ratio of Si:Al=1:1 were prepared via an aqueous process. After a carbothermal reduction-nitridation (CRN) process, nano powders of -sialon were obtained. The characteristics of this product were determined by XRD, TEM and FT-IR. The reaction route in this CRN process is also discussed after phase analysis by XRD.

Abstract:Sialon-mullite composites were synthesized from fly ash with high alumina and coke powders in flowing nitrogen atmosphere at 1580 degrees C for 2h. Effects of different carbon sources and burying powders on phase composition of the production were studied. The results indicated coke was more suitable as carbon source, silicon powders was more suitable as burying powders, respectively. The principal phases of the samples sintered with coal fines as carbon source was mullite and the second phase was corundum.

Abstract:Sialon powders were synthesized using aluminium dross, fly ash and carbon black as main starting materials by the C-Al compound reduction and nitridation process. The effects of different factors on the phase of products were studied, such as the compositions of raw material (the proportion of Si/Al is 1.5, 1 and 0.27), the content of carbon black (10%, 17%, 22% and 27%) and heating temperature (1400, 1450 and 1500 degrees C). The results show that the relatively pure Sialon powders can be obtained at 1450 degrees C; the process of reduction-nitridation is effectively accelerated by the increase of the carbon black content. When the proportion of Si/Al is about 1, the main phases of products are Si3Al3O3N5(beta-Sialon, z=3) and SiAl4O2N4(15R) using 17% carbon black; at 1450 degrees C, a nearly pure Sialon powder ( the main phase is Si3Al3O3N5) can be obtained when the proportion of Si/Al is about 1.5 and the fly ash content is 80%.

Abstract:Carbothermal reduction-nitridation method is an effective means for synthesizing Si3N4 powder. Herein, spherical monodisperse silica was used as silicon source. The effects of reaction temperature, nitrogen flow rate and Si3N4 seeds content on the products were studied. It was found that high-purity α-Si3N4 (>99.0 wt%) was synthesized from C/SiO2 = 3:1 at 1400 °C, reaction time of 6 h and nitrogen flow rate of 800 ml/min. The powder, with an average size of 0.5 μm, showed good dispersity and regular morphology because spherical monodisperse silica could be completely coated with carbon. The more contact sites between SiO2 and C, the higher concentration of SiO(g) would be produced in the initial stage. It also indicated that the nucleation rate of α-Si3N4 increased, thereby inhibiting the formation of an agglomerate phase and suppressing the grain growth of α-Si3N4. Furthermore, higher nitriding temperature and Si3N4 seeds content both decreased the grain size and increased β-Si3N4 content. The forming mechanism of non-agglomerated and submicron-sized α-Si3N4 was clarified.

Abstract:With abundant solid waste of metallic tailings and recycling resources of Yellow River sand as raw materials, carbon black as reduction agent, Ca-alpha-sialon/SiC powders were synthesized by carbothermal reduction nitridation(CRN). Phase composition of reaction products was determined by X-ray diffractometry. The influence of synthesis temperature and holding time on synthesis was discussed. The results show that synthesis temperature affects the formation of Ca-alpha-sialon/SiC significantly. Content of Ca-alpha-sialon in the products increases with the increase of synthesis temperature and reaches the maximum at 1580 degrees C, which is assumed to be the best synthesis temperature. Holding time does not affect the phase composition significantly, but with holding time expanding, carbothermal reduction nitridation reaction proceeds much sufficiently. Content of Ca-alpha-sialon in the samples reaches 81% at 8 h, which is perfect holding time. Volatilization of SiO results in great mass loss of the samples and increases with synthesis temperature increasing and holding time expanding.
