Abstract:Liouville's theorem on the conservation of phase space volume is violated by Berry phase in the semiclassical dynamics of Bloch electrons. This leads to a modification of the phase space density of states, whose significance is discussed in a number of examples: field modification of the Fermi-sea volume, connection to the anomalous Hall effect, and a general formula for orbital magnetization. The effective quantum mechanics of Bloch electrons is also sketched, where the modified density of states plays an essential role.

Abstract:Ever since its discovery the notion of Berry phase has permeated through all branches of physics. Over the past three decades it was gradually realized that the Berry phase of the electronic wave function can have a profound effect on material properties and is responsible for a spectrum of phenomena, such as polarization, orbital magnetism, various (quantum, anomalous, or spin) Hall effects, and quantum charge pumping. This progress is summarized in a pedagogical manner in this review. A brief summary of necessary background is given and a detailed discussion of the Berry phase effect in a variety of solid-state applications. A common thread of the review is the semiclassical formulation of electron dynamics, which is a versatile tool in the study of electron dynamics in the presence of electromagnetic fields and more general perturbations. Finally, a requantization method is demonstrated that converts a semiclassical theory to an effective quantum theory. It is clear that the Berry phase should be added as an essential ingredient to our understanding of basic material properties.

Abstract:We study the Matrix theory from a purely canonical viewpoint. In particular, we identify free particle asymptotic states of the model corresponding to the 11D supergraviton multiplet along with the split of the matrix model Hamiltonian into a free and an interacting part. Elementary quantum mechanical perturbation theory then yields an effective potential for these particles as an expansion in their inverse separation. We discuss how our scheme can be used to compute the Matrix theory result for the 11D supergraviton S matrix and briefly comment on non-eikonal and longitudinal momentum exchange processes.

Abstract:Berry curvature and orbital moment of the Bloch state are two basic ingredients, in addition to the band energy, that must be included in the formulation of semiclassical dynamics of electrons in crystals, in order to give proper account of thermodynamic and transport properties to first order in the electromagnetic field. These quantities are gauge invariant and have direct physical significance as demonstrated by numerous applications in recent years. Generalization to the case of degenerate bands has also been achieved recently, with important applications in spin-dependent transport. The reader is assured that a knowledge of these ingredients of the semiclassical dynamics is also sufficient for the construction of an effective quantum theory, valid to the same order of the field, using a new quantization procedure that generalizes the venerable Peierls substitution rule. We cite the relativistic Dirac electron and the carrier in semiconductors as two prime examples to demonstrate our theory and compare with previous work on such systems. We also establish general relations between different levels of effective theories in a hierarchy.

Abstract:We construct a theory for the semiclassical dynamics of superconducting quasiparticles by following their wave packet motion and reveal rich contents of Berry curvature effects in the phase space spanned by position and momentum. These Berry curvatures are traced back to the characteristics of superconductivity, including the nontrivial momentum-space geometry of superconducting pairing, the real-space supercurrent, and the charge dipole of quasiparticles. The Berry-curvature effects strongly influence the spectroscopic and transport properties of superconductors, such as the local density of states and the thermal Hall conductivity. As a model illustration, we apply the theory to study the twisted bilayer graphene with a d_{x^{2}+y^{2}}+id_{xy} superconducting gap function and demonstrate Berry-curvature induced effects.
