Abstract:Using photoelectron angular streaking by strong circularly polarized laser pulses, we measure angular-dependent tunneling rates from the inner orbitals of O-2 in the molecular frame, which correlate with the strong-field molecular dissociative ionization process. We show that the electronic density of molecular inner orbitals can be visualized by angular tunneling rates in the molecular frame. We demonstrate the orbital-by-orbital characterization of tunneling ionization from randomly oriented molecules. Compared with the single-active-electron approximation theories, i.e., the molecular strong-field approximation and the molecular Ammosov-Delone-Krainov model, the experiment shows that the tunneling from the excited states and the state coupling might play an important role in strong-field molecular tunneling ionization. Our results suggest major advances in quantum theory needed for molecular inner orbital tunneling and open intriguing perspectives to probe quantum dynamics related with molecular core electrons.

Abstract:We study the intensity-dependent photoelectron differential momentum distributions from tunneling ionization of Kr and Xe atoms in circularly polarized laser fields. We measure the width of photoelectron momentum distribution along the laser propagation direction in conjunction with the most probable momentum in the polarization plane. The predictions of the available tunneling models do not agree with the measurement. We further present a semiclassical model for strong-field tunneling ionization of atoms in circularly polarized laser fields, in which we include the effect of the initial orbitals with different magnetic quantum numbers. Using this model, we quantify the relative contributions of the initial orbitals with different magnetic quantum numbers to the photoelectron differential momentum distributions. We achieve good agreement with the measurement, which does not depend on calibration of the laser intensity. Both the atomic orbitals and the long-range Coulomb potential have significant effects on the quantitative description of strong-field tunneling ionization of atoms.

Controlling Directed Atomic Motion and Second-Order Tunneling of a Spin-Orbit-coupled Atom in Optical Lattices

Abstract:We theoretically explore the tunneling dynamics for the tight-binding model of a single spin-orbit-coupled atom trapped in an optical lattice subjected to lattice shaking and to time-periodic Zeeman field. By means of analytical and numerical methods, we demonstrate that the spin-orbit (SO) coupling adds some results to the tunneling dynamics in both multiphoton resonance and far-off-resonance parameter regimes. When the driving frequency is resonant with the static Zeeman field (multiphoton resonances), we obtain an unexpected dynamical localization (DL) phenomenon where the single SO-coupled atom is restricted to making perfect two-site Rabi oscillation accompanied by spin flipping. By using the unconventional DL phenomenon, we are able to generate a ratchetlike effect which enables directed atomic motion towards different directions and accompanies periodic spin flipping under the action of SO coupling. For the far-off-resonance case, we show that by suppressing the usual intersite tunneling alone, it is possible to realize a type of spin-conserving second-order tunneling between next-nearest-neighboring sites, which is not accessible in the conventional lattice system without SO coupling. We also show that simultaneous controls of the usual intersite tunneling and the SO-coupling-related second-order tunneling are necessary for quasienergies flatness (collapse) and completely frozen dynamics to exist. These results may be relevant to potential applications such as spin-based quantum information processing and design of spintronics devices.

Abstract:We study strong-field tunneling of atoms in intense elliptically polarized laser fields in natural tunneling geometry. We obtain the temporal-and spatial-dependent tunneling ionization rates, the transverse and longitudinal momentum distributions, and the position distributions of the tunnel exit in parabolic coordinates. The tunneling electron wave packets at the tunnel exit are three dimensionally characterized for both momentum and spatial distributions. The conjunction between the tunneling point and the classical propagation of the widely used semiclassical model are naturally connected. We further calculate the ellipticity-dependent photoelectron momentum distributions on the detector, which are validated by comparison with the exact results through numerically solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation. The theory clarifies crucial questions about strong-field tunneling ionization, which has important implications for the attoclock with elliptical or circular fields, photoelectron holography, molecular orbital imaging, etc.

Abstract:We study the phase structure of the tunneling wave packets from strong-field ionization of molecules and present a molecular quantum-trajectory Monte Carlo model to describe the laser-driven dynamics of photoelectron momentum distributions of molecules. Using our model, we reproduce and explain the alignment-dependent molecular frame photoelectron spectra of strong-field tunneling ionization of N-2 reported by M. Meckel et al. [Nat. Phys. 10, 594 (2014)]. In addition to modeling the low-energy photoelectron angular distributions quantitatively, we extract the phase structure of strong-field molecular tunneling wave packets, shedding light on its physical origin. The initial phase of the tunneling wave packets at the tunnel exit depends on both the initial transverse momentum distribution and the molecular internuclear distance. We further show that the ionizing molecular orbital has a critical effect on the initial phase of the tunneling wave packets. The phase structure of the photoelectron wave packet is a key ingredient for modeling strong-field molecular photoelectron holography, high-harmonic generation, and molecular orbital imaging.

Abstract:Herein, we review the recent progress in the electron dynamics of optical ionization using ultraintense laser fields. Further, the photoelectron momentum distributions at the tunnel exit during nonadiabatic tunneling ionization arc analyzed. The electron angular distributions arc obtained in terms of molecular coordinates, allowing the imaging of the molecular inner orbits. The two-color (100 nm+800 nm) circularly polarized laser fields arc used to achieve a double-pointer attoclock in which the phase and amplitude of the electronic wavepackets can be characterized. Furthermore, the photoelectrons with a high degree of spin polarization can be produced using circular laser fields based on the ionization of atoms with large spin-orbit coupling effects. Finally, the applications of ultrafast strong field physics and its developmental trend arc illustrated.

Abstract:Light-matter interaction is always one of the themes of science. With the rapid development of ultra-short and ultra-strong laser techniques, nowadays we can research the internal world in a single atom and control the light-electron interactions to explore the ultrafast dynamics of intra-atomic electrons. Laser-induced tunneling ionization of atoms, as the footstone of many strong-field physical phenomena, has important research significance and is also one of the hot frontier topics. In this paper, we review the recent research advances in strong-field atomic tunneling ionization. The coordinate and momentum distributions of electrons after tunneling process are obtained based on the non-adiabatic tunneling ionization in the natural coordinates (i.e., the parabolic coordinates). We introduce the theoretical description and experimental measurement methods for the initial phase (i.e., the sub-barrier phase) of electrons obtained in the tunneling process. Based on the sub-barrier phase, we can reveal the quantum dynamical information of the tunneling process. We introduce the recent advances in photoelectron spin polarization during the strong-field tunneling ionization. On the basis of the orthogonal two-color fields, the degrees of freedom of photoelectrons in the time and space dimensions can be accurately controlled. Finally, we summarize this paper and predict future research advances.

Abstract:We present a subcycle nonadiabatic strong-field tunneling theory and derive the position of tunnel exit, the transverse and longitudinal momentum distributions at the tunnel exit, and the ionization rate in an instantaneous laser field. These tunneling coordinates are shown to nonadiabatically couple with each other in an instantaneous laser field when the electron tunnels through the barrier. We have further incorporated the nonadiabatic tunneling theory with the quantum-trajectory Monte Carlo approach to investigate the nonadiabatic effect on the photoelectron angular distributions. The simulated photoelectron angular distributions with the nonadiabatic corrections have been validated by comparison with the ab initio results through numerically solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation. The nonadiabatic coordinates at the tunnel exit play important roles in both the direct ionization and rescattering process. The nonadiabatic tunneling theory provides an intuitive understanding on subcycle dynamics of tunneling ionization.

Abstract:Photoelectron spectroscopy in intense laser fields has proven to be a powerful tool for providing detailed insights into molecular structure. The ionizing molecular orbital, however, has not been reconstructed from the photoelectron spectra, mainly due to the fact that its phase information can be hardly extracted. In this work, we propose a method to retrieve the phase information of the ionizing molecular orbital with laser-induced electron tunneling spectroscopy. By analyzing the interference pattern in the photoelectron spectrum, the weighted coefficients and the relative phases of the constituent atomic orbitals for a molecular orbital can be extracted. With this information we reconstruct the highest occupied molecular orbital of N$_2$. Our work provides a reliable and general approach for imaging of molecular orbitals with the photoelectron spectroscopy.

Abstract:The tunneling ionization as one of the fundamental quantum processes exposing of atoms in strong laser fields, has been investigated intensively in recent decades. The tunneling ionization has intrigued many important implications. As the first stage, the post ionization effects have been revealed in high-resolution experiments. All of those experiments indicate the importance of the long range potential on the tunneling ionization. In this chapter, we will overview the long-range potential effect on strong-field tunneling. Especially, the long range ionic potential has significant effect on the low-energy photoelectron energy structures ("ionization surprise"), the ionization asymmetry and the local ionization suppression.
Strong-field Tunneling Ionization in the Relativistic Regime

Abstract:We study the photoelectron energy and momentum distributions of strong-field tunneling ionization in the relativistic regime. Using the relativistic strong-field approximation, we have derived the position of the tunnel exit, the initial momentum distributions at the tunnel exit, and the instantaneous ionization rate when the electron tunnels through the Coulomb barrier in the relativistic regime. Since the tunneling electron energy is of the order of 1% of the rest of its mass, those nonadiabatic tunneling coordinates are quite different from the nonrelativistic case. We further incorporate the nonadiabatic relativistic tunneling coordinates into the classical trajectory Monte Carlo model and have calculated photoelectron energy and momentum distributions by accurately considering the field distribution in the focus of relativistic femtosecond laser pulses. We show that the nonadiabatic tunneling effect and the focal field distribution are very crucial to modeling strong-field ionization in the relativistic regime because the quiver radius of electrons can be as large as the beam waist.

Abstract:Study on ionization process of molecules in an intense infrared laser field is of paramount interest in strong-field physics and constitutes the foundation of imaging of molecular valence orbitals and attosecond science. We show measurement of alignment-dependent ionization probabilities of the lower-lying orbitals of the molecules by experimentally detecting alignment-dependence of fluorescence emission from tunnel ionized carbon dioxide molecules. The experimental measurements are compared with the theoretical calculations of strong field approximation (SFA) and molecular ADK models. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of an all-optical approach for probing the ionization dynamics of lower-lying orbitals of molecules, which is still difficult to achieve until now by other techniques. Moreover, the deviation between the experimental and theoretical results indicates the incompleteness of current theoretical models for describing strong field ionization of molecules.
