Abstract:We investigate theoretically the inner-shell electron effects in strong-field double ionization of Xe by a comparative study with two different three-dimensional semiclassical models, i.e., the widely used helium-like model and an improved Green--Sellin--Zachor (GSZ) model. The enhanced double-ionization signals through sequential ionization and recollision-induced excitation with subsequent field ionization are identified as two origins of the nonstructured pattern in the correlated electron momentum spectrum observed in a recent experiment [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 103001 (2014)]. The relationship between these enhancements and the inner-shell electrons is revealed by back analysis of the classical trajectories.

Abstract:We measure the wavelength-dependent correlated-electron momentum (CEM) spectra of strong-field double ionization of Xe atoms, and observe a significant change from a roughly nonstructured (uncorrelated) pattern at 795 nm to an elongated distribution with V-shaped structure (correlated) at higher wavelengths of 1320 and 1810 nm, pointing to the transition of the ionization dynamics imprinted in the momentum distributions. These observations are well reproduced by a semiclassical model using Green-Sellin-Zachor potential to take into account the screening effect. We show that the momentum distribution of Xe2+ undergoes a bifurcation structure emerging from single-hump to double-hump structure as the laser wavelength increases, which is dramatically different from that of He2+, indicating the complex multi-electron effect. By back analyzing the double ionization trajectories in the phase space (the initial transverse momentum and the laser phase at the tunneling exit) of the first tunneled electrons, we provide deep insight into the physical origin for electron correlation dynamics. We find that a random distribution in phase-space is responsible for a less distinct structured CEM spectrum at shorter wavelength. While increasing the laser wavelength, a topology-invariant pattern in phase-space appears, leading to the clearly visible V-shaped structures.

Abstract:The influence of the magnetic component of the driving electromagnetic field is often neglected when investigating light-matter interaction. We show that the magnetic component of the light field plays an important role in nonsequential double ionization, which serves as a powerful tool to investigate electron correlation. We investigate the magnetic-field effects in double ionization of xenon atoms driven by near-infrared ultrashort femtosecond laser pulses and find that the mean forward shift of the electron momentum distribution in light-propagation direction agrees well with the classical prediction, where no under-barrier or recollisional nondipole enhancement is observed. By extending classical trajectory Monte Carlo simulations beyond the dipole approximation, we reveal that double ionization proceeds via recollision-induced doubly excited states, followed by subsequent sequential over-barrier field ionization of the two electrons. In agreement with this model, the binding energies do not lead to an additional nondipole forward shift of the electrons. Our findings provide a new method to study electron correlation by exploiting the effect of the magnetic component of the electromagnetic field.

Abstract:We present new experimental and theoretical cross sections for electron-impact single ionization of Xe$^{12+}$ and Xe$^{13+}$ ions, and double ionization of Xe$^{12+}$, Xe$^{13+}$ and Xe$^{14+}$ ions for collision energies from the respective ionization thresholds up to 3500 eV. The calculations use the fully relativistic subconfiguration-averaged distorted-wave (SCADW) approach and, partly, the more detailed level-to-level distorted wave (LLDW) method. We find that, unlike in previous work, our theoretical cross sections agree with our experimental ones within the experimental uncertainties, except for the near-threshold double-ionization cross sections. We attribute this remaining discrepancy to the neglect of direct-double ionization in the present theoretical treatment.

Abstract:We perform a triple coincidence study on differential momentum distributions of strong-field double ionization of Ar atoms in linearly polarized fields (795 nm, 45 fs, 7×10(13) W/cm2). Using a three-dimensional two-electron atomic-ensemble semiclassical model including the tunneling effect for both electrons, we retrieve differential momentum distributions and achieve a good agreement with the measurement. Ionization dynamics of the correlated electrons for the side-by-side and back-to-back emission is analyzed separately. According to the semiclassical model, we find that the doubly excited states are largely populated after the laser-assisted recollision and large amounts of double ionization dominantly takes place through sequential ionization of doubly excited states at such a low laser intensity. Compared with the Coulomb-free and Coulomb-corrected sequential tunneling models, we verify that electrons can obtain an energy as large as ∼6.5U p through Coulomb scattering in the combined laser and doubly charged ionic fields.

Abstract:We experimentally and theoretically investigate the influence of the magnetic component of an electromagnetic field on high-order above-threshold ionization of xenon atoms driven by ultrashort femtosecond laser pulses. The nondipole shift of the electron momentum distribution along the light-propagation direction for high energy electrons beyond the 2U_{p} classical cutoff is found to be vastly different from that below this cutoff, where U_{p} is the ponderomotive potential of the driving laser field. A local minimum structure in the momentum dependence of the nondipole shift above the cutoff is identified for the first time. With the help of classical and quantum-orbit analysis, we show that large-angle rescattering of the electrons strongly alters the partitioning of the photon momentum between electron and ion. The sensitivity of the observed nondipole shift to the electronic structure of the target atom is confirmed by three-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation simulations for different model potentials. Our work paves the way toward understanding the physics of extreme light-matter interactions at long wavelengths and high electron kinetic energies.

Abstract:The double electron E1 transition energies, probabilities, and oscillator strengths between the $2s2p^{n}$ and $1s^{2}2p^{n-1}$($1\!\leq\!n\leq\!6$) configurations of Xe$^{q+}$($47\!\leq\!q\leq\!52$) ions with different spectator electrons have been calculated based on the multi-configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method. A reasonable electron correlation model is constructed with the aid of the active space method. The finite mass of nuclear, Breit interaction and QED effects have also been included. The calculated results are in good agreement with the available data. The theoretical spectra of different spectator electrons of the double K hole state have been predicted. The spectator electron effects on the transition spectra have been analyzed in detail. The present results will be helpful for analyzing the high energy X-ray spectrum observed from the interaction between high energy highly charged ions and the surface.

Double-slit effect on laser induced electron diffraction of dimers

Abstract:We theoretically study strong-field ionization of dimers with large internuclear distance in linearly and circularly polarized light fields. By numerically solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE), we show that the double-slit interference effect plays a significant role in the laser-induced electron diffraction of dimers. And the prominent double-slit interference structures are sensitive to the symmetry and orientation of the orbitals of dimers. We then develop a semi-classical trajectory model including the double-slit effect by coherently summing up the contributions of two separated atoms. This model explains the interference fringes of TDSE simulations. And the effect of long-range potential on the double-slit interference is discussed. This work provides intuitive physical insights into how dimers being ionized in strong laser fields and has implications to extract ultrafast dynamics of polyatomic molecules from strong-field photoelectron spectroscopy.

Abstract:We study strong-field double ionization in a three-electron atom by applying a simplified, reduced-dimensionality model with three active electrons. The influence of the spin-induced symmetry of the spatial part of the wavefunction on the final two-photoectron momentum distribution is discussed. We identify partial momentum distributions originating from different sets of spins of outgoing electrons providing in this way a quantum support connection between V-structure and direct ionization typically explained classically. Changes in the momentum distribution with increasing field amplitude obtained in our simplified model are shown to be well-correlated with experimental data known from the literature. The possible relation between the observed dependencies and different ionization mechanisms is discussed.

Abstract:The tunneling ionization as one of the fundamental quantum processes exposing of atoms in strong laser fields, has been investigated intensively in recent decades. The tunneling ionization has intrigued many important implications. As the first stage, the post ionization effects have been revealed in high-resolution experiments. All of those experiments indicate the importance of the long range potential on the tunneling ionization. In this chapter, we will overview the long-range potential effect on strong-field tunneling. Especially, the long range ionic potential has significant effect on the low-energy photoelectron energy structures ("ionization surprise"), the ionization asymmetry and the local ionization suppression.

Abstract:This study delves into the relatively uncharted territory of Above Threshold Ionization in atoms, triggered by intense X-ray radiation fields. At these frequencies, the energy of a single photon far exceeds the ionization potential of valence electrons in atoms and molecules. The conditions we examine are similar to those achievable with current or future free-electron laser facilities. Under such high-energy scenarios, the onset of strong field ionization requires a shift away from the traditional quasi-classical approach. Here, we present an analytical model to characterize how the field-free ionization potential, ponderomotive energy, and photon energy govern the transition to this regime, all accounted for by means of the Keldysh and Reiss parameters. We show that both of these parameters are needed to capture the onset of strong-field behavior due to both bound state and continuum state properties. At higher X-ray intensities, we find that ionization rates deviate from the linear intensity scaling expected from lowest order perturbative processes, corresponding to channel closure and higher-order photon absorption processes.

A semi-analytical model for the dressed two-photon double ionization is shown to qualitatively account for the interference patterns in the joint energy spectrum. Similar signatures of interferences between transient induced time-delayed ionization bursts are expected for other atomic and molecular multielectron systems.

Abstract:The dynamics of photoelectrons ionized by XUV pulses in the presence of a strong infrared (IR) field is theoretically investigated by solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE). We study the ionization dynamics of He by an XUV pulse in the presence of a relatively strong IR laser field, which is different from the conventional attosecond streaking experiments where a rather weak IR field is applied. Comparing with the photoelectron spectra produced by the IR field only, we find the spectra ionized by the combined fields construct interesting interference structures for different XUV photon energies and pulse intensities. These features can be analyzed and explained by a quantum-trajectory theory based on the strong-field approximation (SFA). The SFA theory shows excellent agreement with the TDSE results, revealing that these structures originate from interferences among photoelectrons ionized by XUV pluses (streaked by the strong IR field) at different moments, and in some energy regions, together with the photoelectrons ionized by the intense IR pulse itself.

Abstract:The Hartree independent-electron model is applied to the evaluation of the relative numbers of multicharged Xe ion species produced by intense laser pulses. Single-electron ionisation probabilities are constructed from a Keldysh-like formula containing adjustable parameters to give best fits to data at 6.42, 2.33, 1.17 and 0.117 eV photon energies. The spatial intensity distribution of the laser beam is folded in. Overall satisfactory fits to the data over this wide wavelength range with physically reasonable parameters confirm the validity of the model. The time evolution of the various states of ionisation during the pulse is qualitatively similar to the sequential ionisation picture.
