Abstract:Objectives The aims of the present study were to assess client satisfaction with existing services, gauge the interest in an express service option and to compare waiting times before and after the introduction of an express service. Methods A survey evaluating satisfaction with existing services, waiting times and interest in an express service was offered to all clients attending the Western Sydney Sexual Health Centre in May 2013. A pilot of the express service ran from May to December 2013, and a follow-up survey was conducted in December 2013. Results There was a high level of interest in the express service. Median waiting times and satisfaction with waiting times improved following introduction of the express clinic. A high level of satisfaction was reported in those who had used the express service. Conclusions The express service was well received by clients and has the potential to improve client waiting times, increase clinic capacity and improve the overall client journey through the clinic. What is known about the topic? Express service options for testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are being introduced both in Australia and overseas. Express services have been shown to increase clinic capacity and can create cost savings. They appear to be acceptable to clients. What does this paper add? This paper demonstrates that an express service option can be successfully introduced in an at-risk multicultural population. What are the implications for practitioners? The present study helps show that new models can be successfully introduced into long-standing traditional service models. Such models can help improve efficiency, clinic capacity and may produce cost savings. An express clinic is an option for screening asymptomatic clients for STIs. Clients complete a self-collected history and take self-collected specimens, and clinician-collected blood tests and throat swabs are advised accordingly.

Abstract:High ambient illumination reduces the range and target detection reliability in light-based 3D sensors. Raising the optical power of the artificial illumination source to overcome the influence of high ambient light is often not possible for systems with flash illumination due to eye safety constraints. The high timing resolution of single-photon avalanche diodes enables the search for photon concurrences in incident photon streams. In this paper a theoretical analysis of coincidence and its benefits for 3D sensors with single-photon avalanche diodes is presented.

Abstract:When the electron-phonon coupling is quadratic in the phonon coordinates, electrons can pair to form bipolarons due to phonon zero-point fluctuations, a purely quantum effect. We study superconductivity originating from this pairing mechanism in a minimal model and reveal that, in the strong coupling regime, the critical temperature ( Tc ) is only mildly suppressed by the coupling strength, in stark contrast to the exponential suppression in linearly coupled systems, thus implying higher optimal Tc values. We demonstrate that large coupling constants of this flavor are achieved in known materials such as perovskites, and discuss strategies to realize such superconductivity using superlattices. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.226001 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Sulphur K edge spectroscopy was used to differentiate types of sulphur present in petroleum asphaltenes and kerogens. A simplified model of the near edge structure enabled quantification of the different sulphur forms. The evolution of the sulphur edge following pyrolysis of kerogens confirms that thiophenic sulphur is more stable than organic sulphide forms. Pyrite retained in the kerogens may partially transform to iron sulphate during air storage. During pyrolysis FeS2 is regenerated and subsequently converted to FeS, contributing to the release of H2S. The results show that exchange between organic and mineral forms of sulphur is limited.

Abstract:This study was carried out to investigate effects of drugs treated in the elderly osteoporotic patients on measurements of carboxy terminal, mid-region and intact PTH, by using the various kinds of PTH kits. The drugs such as 1 alpha(OH)D3, calcitonin and so on, in the treatment of osteoporotic patients, was brought about no significant inter-relationships among carboxy terminal, mid-region and intact PTH in sera of the elderly osteoporotic patients with serum high alkaline phosphatase activity.

Abstract:Background Fever sometimes occurs during anesthesia. However, it is rare considering how often pyrogenic causes are likely to be present and how fever is after surgery. This low incidence results in part from dose-dependent inhibition of fever by volatile anesthetics. Paralysis, however, may contribute by preventing shivering and the associated increase in metabolic heat production. Therefore the authors tested the hypothesis that paralysis during anesthesia decreases the febrile response to pyrogen administration. Methods Seven volunteers each participated on two study days. They were given 30 IU/g intravenous interleukin-2, followed 90 min later by an additional 70 IU/g dose. Anesthesia was induced 30 min after the second dose and maintained for 6 h with 0.6 minimum alveolar concentration isoflurane. The volunteers were randomly assigned to (1) paralysis with vecuronium or (2) no muscle relaxants. Body heat content and distribution were determined from measured tissue and skin temperatures. Data are presented as mean +/- SD; P < 0.05 was considered significant. Results There was no clinically important difference in peak core (tympanic membrane) temperatures on the unparalyzed (37.6 +/- 0.9 [degree sign]C) and paralyzed (37.2 +/- 0.6 [degree sign]C) days. Core heat content increased 1.2 +/- 0.7 kcal/kg over the last 5 h of anesthesia on the unparalyzed day, but only by 0.9 +/- 0.4 kcal/kg when the volunteers were paralyzed. Peripheral tissue heat content increased 0.1 +/- 1.1 kcal/kg on the unparalyzed day but decreased 1.1 +/- 0.7 kcal/kg when the volunteers were paralyzed. Consequently, body heat content increased 1.3 +/- 1.3 kcal/kg on the unparalyzed day but decreased significant by 0.2 +/- 0.8 kcal/kg when the volunteers were paralyzed. Conclusions Paralysis prevented shivering from increasing the metabolic rate. Consequently, body heat content decreased during paralysis, whereas otherwise it increased. Thermoregulatory vasoconstriction was nonetheless able to maintain similar peak and integrated core temperatures on each study day. Administration of muscle relaxants thus is not the primary explanation for the relative paucity of intraoperative fever.
