Abstract:With the production of polar molecules in the quantum regime, long-range dipolar interactions are expected to facilitate understanding of strongly interacting many-body quantum systems and to realize lattice spin models for exploring quantum magnetism. In ordinary atomic systems, where contact interactions require wavefunction overlap, effective spin interactions on a lattice can be mediated by tunnelling, through a process referred to as superexchange; however, the coupling is relatively weak and is limited to nearest-neighbour interactions. In contrast, dipolar interactions exist even in the absence of tunnelling and extend beyond nearest neighbours. This allows coherent spin dynamics to persist even for gases with relatively high entropy and low lattice filling. Measured effects of dipolar interactions in ultracold molecular gases have been limited to the modification of inelastic collisions and chemical reactions. Here we use dipolar interactions of polar molecules pinned in a three-dimensional optical lattice to realize a lattice spin model. Spin is encoded in rotational states of molecules that are prepared and probed by microwaves. Resonant exchange of rotational angular momentum between two molecules realizes a spin-exchange interaction. The dipolar interactions are apparent in the evolution of the spin coherence, which shows oscillations in addition to an overall decay of the coherence. The frequency of these oscillations, the strong dependence of the spin coherence time on the lattice filling factor and the effect of a multipulse sequence designed to reverse dynamics due to two-body exchange interactions all provide evidence of dipolar interactions. Furthermore, we demonstrate the suppression of loss in weak lattices due to a continuous quantum Zeno mechanism. Measurements of these tunnelling-induced losses allow us to determine the lattice filling factor independently. Our work constitutes an initial exploration of the behaviour of many-body spin models with direct, long-range spin interactions and lays the groundwork for future studies of many-body dynamics in spin lattices.

Abstract:Collective excitations of long-lived atomic hyperfine states can be synthesized into a Bose-Hubbard model in momentum space, where a spatially long-range interaction is introduced by laser-dressing the hyperfine state to Rydberg states. We explore stationary and dynamical properties of the momentum-space lattice in an artificial magnetic field. The many-body ground states support both chiral and anti-chiral edge currents in momentum space. Their stability against strong interactions is verified by a dynamical mean-field simulation. We show that the interplay of the interaction and chirality leads to correlated chiral dynamics, where an interaction-induced excitation blockade in momentum space suppresses the edge currents. When incorporating an effective decay to the lattice, we find that excitation transportation, whose dynamics is governed by a dissipative Bose-Hubard model, can be prohibited by a strong local dissipation, as a result of the quantum Zeno effect. Our study paves the route to quantum simulate topological phases and exotic dynamics with collective states of interacting atoms in momentum-space lattice.

Abstract:In this Letter, we present an experimental study of the collective dipole oscillation of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic trap. The dynamics of the center-of-mass dipole oscillation is studied in a broad parameter region as a function of spin-orbit coupling parameters as well as the oscillation amplitude. The anharmonic properties beyond the effective-mass approximation are revealed, such as the amplitude-dependent frequency and finite oscillation frequency at a place with a divergent effective mass. These anharmonic behaviors agree quantitatively with variational wave-function calculations. Moreover, we experimentally demonstrate a unique feature of the spin-orbit coupled system predicted by a sum-rule approach, stating that spin polarization susceptibility-a static physical quantity-can be measured via the dynamics of dipole oscillation. The divergence of polarization susceptibility is observed at the quantum phase transition that separates the magnetic nonzero-momentum condensate from the nonmagnetic zero-momentum phase. The good agreement between the experimental and theoretical results provides a benchmark for recently developed theoretical approaches.

Abstract:We study the coherent off-equilibrium spin mixing inside an atomic condensate. Using mean-field theory and adopting the single-spatial-mode approximation, the condensate spin dynamics is found to be well described by that of a nonrigid pendulum and displays a variety of periodic oscillations in an external magnetic field. Our results illuminate several recent experimental observations and provide critical insights into the observation of coherent interaction-driven oscillations in a spin-1 condensate.

Abstract:The conservation of magnetization, or atomic spin angular momentum, is broken for anisotropic dipolar interactions. As a result, the Einstein-de Haas effect, or the transfer of spin to spatial angular momentum, arises because the total angular momentum is conserved. We identify the regime for observing this with two 87Rb atoms in a single well, stimulated by the recent result for a condensate. The two-atom system is found to be more easily observed and confirmed with the addition of a periodically modulated magnetic field. Our result of utilizing a feeble dipolar interaction may find potential applications in precision measurements.
Controlling Directed Atomic Motion and Second-Order Tunneling of a Spin-Orbit-coupled Atom in Optical Lattices

Abstract:We theoretically explore the tunneling dynamics for the tight-binding model of a single spin-orbit-coupled atom trapped in an optical lattice subjected to lattice shaking and to time-periodic Zeeman field. By means of analytical and numerical methods, we demonstrate that the spin-orbit (SO) coupling adds some results to the tunneling dynamics in both multiphoton resonance and far-off-resonance parameter regimes. When the driving frequency is resonant with the static Zeeman field (multiphoton resonances), we obtain an unexpected dynamical localization (DL) phenomenon where the single SO-coupled atom is restricted to making perfect two-site Rabi oscillation accompanied by spin flipping. By using the unconventional DL phenomenon, we are able to generate a ratchetlike effect which enables directed atomic motion towards different directions and accompanies periodic spin flipping under the action of SO coupling. For the far-off-resonance case, we show that by suppressing the usual intersite tunneling alone, it is possible to realize a type of spin-conserving second-order tunneling between next-nearest-neighboring sites, which is not accessible in the conventional lattice system without SO coupling. We also show that simultaneous controls of the usual intersite tunneling and the SO-coupling-related second-order tunneling are necessary for quasienergies flatness (collapse) and completely frozen dynamics to exist. These results may be relevant to potential applications such as spin-based quantum information processing and design of spintronics devices.

Abstract:We use Ramsey spectroscopy to experimentally probe the quantum dynamics of disordered dipolar-interacting ultracold molecules in a partially filled optical lattice, and we compare the results to theory. We report the capability to control the dipolar interaction strength. We find excellent agreement between our measurements of the spin dynamics and theoretical calculations with no fitting parameters, including the dynamics' dependence on molecule number and on the dipolar interaction strength. This agreement verifies the microscopic model expected to govern the dynamics of dipolar molecules, even in this strongly correlated beyond-mean-field regime, and represents the first step towards using this system to explore many-body dynamics in regimes that are inaccessible to current theoretical techniques.
Quantum Beat Phenomenon Presence in Coherent Spin Dynamics of Spin-2 ^87rb Atoms in a Deep Optical Lattice

Abstract:Motivated by the recent experimental work (A. Widera, et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 19045), we study the collisional spin dynamics of two spin-2 ^87Rb atoms confined in a deep optical lattice. When the system is initialized as |0,0>, three different two-particle Zeeman states are involved in the time evolution due to the conservation of magnetization. For a large magnetic field B>0.8 Guass, the spin coherent dynamics reduces to a Rabi-like oscillation between the states |0,0> and magnetic field, a general three-level coherent oscillation displays. In particular, around a critical magnetic fieldB_c≃0.48Guass, the probability in the Zeeman states phenomenon, ready to be confirmed in future experiments.

Abstract:We experimentally study the spin dynamics of mesoscopic ensembles of ultracold magnetic spin-3 atoms located in two separated wells of an optical dipole trap. We use a radio-frequency sweep to selectively flip the spin of the atoms in one of the wells, which produces two separated spin domains of opposite polarization. We observe that these engineered spin domains are metastable with respect to the long-range magnetic dipolar interactions between the two ensembles. The absence of inter-cloud dipolar spin-exchange processes reveals a classical behavior, in contrast to previous results with atoms loaded in an optical lattice. When we merge the two subsystems, we observe spin-exchange dynamics due to contact interactions which enable the first determination of the s-wave scattering length of 52Cr atoms in the S=0 molecular channel a_0=13.5^{+11}_{-10.5}a_B (where a_B is the Bohr radius).

However, the necessary spin-orbit coupling can be tricky to engineer. Wu et al. conceived and experimentally demonstrated a simple scheme that involves only a single laser source and can be continuously tuned between one- and two-dimensional spin-orbit coupling (see the Perspective by Aidelsburger). Abstract:In a recent experiment (Z. Wu, L. Zhang, W. Sun, X.-T. Xu, B.-Z. Wang, S.-C. Ji, Y. Deng, S. Chen, X.-J. Liu, and J.-W. Pan, arXiv: 1511.08170 [cond-mat.quant-gas]), a Raman-assisted two-dimensional spin-orbit coupling has been realized for a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice potential. In light of this exciting progress, we study in detail key properties of the system. As the Raman lasers inevitably couple atoms to high-lying bands, the behaviors of the system in both the single-and many-particle sectors are significantly affected. In particular, the high-band effects enhance the plane-wave phase and lead to the emergence of "roton" gaps at low Zeeman fields. Furthermore, we identify high-band-induced topological phase boundaries in both the single-particle and the quasiparticle spectra. We then derive an effective two-band model, which captures the high-band physics in the experimentally relevant regime. Our results not only offer valuable insights into the two-dimensional lattice spin-orbit coupling, but also provide a systematic formalism to model high-band effects in lattice systems with Raman-assisted spin-orbit couplings.

Abstract:We investigate the ground-state properties of Bose-Bose mixtures with Rashba-type spin-orbit (SO) coupling in a square lattice. The system displays rich physics from the deep Mott insulator (MI) all the way to the superfluid (SF) regime. In the deep MI regime, exotic spin-ordered phases arise due to the effective Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya type of superexchange interactions. By employing the nonperturbative bosonic dynamical mean-field theory (BDMFT), we numerically study and establish the stability of these magnetic phases against increasing hopping amplitude. We show that as hopping is increased across the MI to SF transition, exotic superfluid phases with magnetic textures emerge. In particular, we identify an exotic spin-spiral magnetic texture with spatial period 3 in the superfluid close to the MI-SF transition.

Abstract:Collisions in a thermal gas are perceived as random or incoherent as a consequence of the large numbers of initial and final quantum states accessible to the system. In a quantum gas, for example, a Bose–Einstein condensate or a degenerate Fermi gas, the phase space accessible to low-energy collisions is so restricted that collisions become coherent and reversible. Here, we report the observation of coherent spin-changing collisions in a gas of spin-1 bosons. Starting with condensates occupying two spin states, a condensate in the third spin state is coherently and reversibly created by atomic collisions. The observed dynamics are analogous to Josephson oscillations in weakly connected superconductors and represent a type of matter–wave four-wave mixing. The spin-dependent scattering length is determined from these oscillations to be −1.45(32) bohr. Finally, we demonstrate coherent control of the evolution of the system by applying differential phase shifts to the spin states using magnetic fields.

The centre of the Gaussian wave packet produced in a ferromagnetic chain shows Bloch oscillations under an additional transverse gradient magnetic field, which can be applied to measure the many-body superexchange interaction between the nearest-neighbour atoms.

Abstract:Rydberg atoms in optical lattices and tweezers is now a well-established platform for simulating quantum spin systems. However, the role of the atoms' spatial wave function has not been examined in detail experimentally. Here, we show a strong spin-motion coupling emerging from the large variation of the interaction potential over the wave function spread. We observe its clear signature on the ultrafast many-body nanosecond-dynamics of atoms excited to a Rydberg S state, using picosecond pulses, from an unity-filling atomic Mott-insulator. We also propose an approach to tune arbitrarily the strength of the spin-motion coupling relative to the motional energy scale set by trapping potentials. Our work provides a new direction for exploring the dynamics of strongly correlated quantum systems by adding the motional degree of freedom to the Rydberg simulation toolbox. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.133.093405 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Recent experiments on ultracold atoms in optical lattices have synthesized a variety of tunable bands with degenerate double-well structures in momentum space. Such degeneracies in the single particle spectrum strongly enhance quantum fluctuations, and may lead to exotic many-body ground states. Here we consider weakly interacting spinor Bose gases in such bands, and discover a universal quantum "order by disorder" phenomenon which selects a novel chiral spin superfluid with remarkable properties such as spontaneous anomalous spin Hall effect and momentum space antiferromagnetism. For bosons in the excited Dirac band of a hexagonal lattice, such a state supports staggered spin loop currents in real space. We show that Bloch oscillations provide a powerful dynamical route to quantum state preparation of such a chiral spin superfluid. Our predictions can be readily tested in spin resolved time-of-flight experiments.

Abstract:In atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices, mean-field energy can support the existence of period-doubled density waves, which are similar to Bloch waves but have the double periodicity of the underlying lattice potentials. However, they are dynamically unstable. Here, we propose to use the spin-orbit coupling to stabilize the period-doubled density waves. The stabilization mechanism is revealed to relate to interaction-induced spontaneous symmetry breaking of the spin-flip parity symmetry.

Abstract:We report on the observation of spontaneously drifting coupled spin and quadrupolar density waves in the ground state of laser driven Rubidium atoms. These laser-cooled atomic ensembles exhibit spontaneous magnetism via light mediated interactions when submitted to optical feedback by a retroreflecting mirror. Drift direction and chirality of the waves arise from spontaneous symmetry breaking.
