Abstract:Ever since its discovery the notion of Berry phase has permeated through all branches of physics. Over the past three decades it was gradually realized that the Berry phase of the electronic wave function can have a profound effect on material properties and is responsible for a spectrum of phenomena, such as polarization, orbital magnetism, various (quantum, anomalous, or spin) Hall effects, and quantum charge pumping. This progress is summarized in a pedagogical manner in this review. A brief summary of necessary background is given and a detailed discussion of the Berry phase effect in a variety of solid-state applications. A common thread of the review is the semiclassical formulation of electron dynamics, which is a versatile tool in the study of electron dynamics in the presence of electromagnetic fields and more general perturbations. Finally, a requantization method is demonstrated that converts a semiclassical theory to an effective quantum theory. It is clear that the Berry phase should be added as an essential ingredient to our understanding of basic material properties.

Abstract:We address the importance of the modern theory of orbital magnetization for spintronics. Based on an all-electron first-principles approach, we demonstrate that the predictive power of the routinely employed "atom-centered" approximation is limited to materials like elemental bulk ferromagnets, while the application of the modern theory of orbital magnetization is crucial in chemically or structurally inhomogeneous systems such as magnetic thin films, and materials exhibiting non-trivial topology in reciprocal and real space,~e.g.,~Chern insulators or non-collinear systems. We find that the modern theory is particularly crucial for describing magnetism in a class of materials that we suggest here $-$ topological orbital ferromagnets.

Berry Phase, Hyperorbits, and the Hofstadter Spectrum: Semiclassical Dynamics in Magnetic Bloch Bands.

Abstract:We develop a semiclassical theory for the dynamics of electrons in a magnetic Bloch band, where the Berry phase plays an important role. This theory, together with the Boltzmann equation, provides a framework for studying transport problems in high magnetic fields. We also derive an Onsager-like formula for the quantization of cyclotron orbits, and we find a connection between the number of orbits and Hall conductivity. This connection is employed to explain the clustering structure of the Hofstadter spectrum. The advantage of this theory is its generality and conceptual simplicity.

Abstract:Topological phase in magnetic materials yields a quantized contribution to the Hall effect known as the topological Hall effect, which is often caused by skyrmions, with each skyrmion creating a magnetic flux quantum h/e. The control and understanding of topological properties in nanostructured materials is the subject of immense interest for both fundamental science and technological applications, especially in spintronics. In this work, the electron-transport properties and spin structure of exchange-coupled cobalt nanoparticles with an average particle size of 13.7 nm are studied experimentally and theoretically. Magnetic and Hall-effect measurements identify topological phase transitions in the exchange-coupled cobalt nanoparticles and were used to discover a qualitatively new type of hysteresis in the topological Hall effect namely, Berry-phase hysteresis. Micromagnetic simulations reveal the origin of the topological Hall effect namely, the chiral domains, with domain-wall chirality quantified by an integer skyrmion number. These spin structures are different from the skyrmions formed due to Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interactions in B20 crystals and multilayered thin films, and caused by cooperative magnetization reversal in the exchange-coupled cobalt nanoparticles. An analytical model is developed to explain the underlying physics of Berry-phase hysteresis, which is strikingly different from the iconic magnetic hysteresis and constitutes one aspect of 21st-century reshaping of our view on nature at the borderline of physics, chemistry, mathematics, and materials science.

Abstract:We discuss the anomalous Hall effect in a two-dimensional electron gas subject to a spatially varying magnetization. This topological Hall effect (THE) does not require any spin-orbit coupling, and arises solely from Berry phase acquired by an electron moving in a smoothly varying magnetization. We propose an experiment with a structure containing 2D electrons or holes of diluted magnetic semiconductor subject to the stray field of a lattice of magnetic nanocylinders. The striking behavior predicted for such a system (of which all relevant parameters are well known) allows to observe unambiguously the THE and to distinguish it from other mechanisms.

Abstract:Liouville's theorem on the conservation of phase space volume is violated by Berry phase in the semiclassical dynamics of Bloch electrons. This leads to a modification of the phase space density of states, whose significance is discussed in a number of examples: field modification of the Fermi-sea volume, connection to the anomalous Hall effect, and a general formula for orbital magnetization. The effective quantum mechanics of Bloch electrons is also sketched, where the modified density of states plays an essential role.

Abstract:In quantum mechanics, a quantum wavepacket may acquire a geometrical phase as it evolves along a cyclic trajectory in parameter space. In condensed matter systems, the Berry phase plays a crucial role in fundamental phenomena such as the Hall effect, orbital magnetism, and polarization. Resolving the quantum nature of these processes commonly requires sensitive quantum techniques, as tunneling, being the dominant mechanism in STM microscopy and tunneling transport devices. In this study, we integrate these two phenomena - geometrical phases and tunneling - and observe a complex-valued Berry phase via strong field light matter interactions in condensed matter systems. By manipulating the tunneling barrier, with attoseconds precision, we measure the imaginary Berry phase accumulated as the electron tunnels during a fraction of the optical cycle. Our work opens new theoretical and experimental directions in geometrical phases physics and their realization in condensed matter systems, expanding solid state strong field light metrology to study topological quantum phenomena.

Berry phase effects on the transverse conductivity of Fermi surfaces and their detection via spin qubit noise magnetometry

Abstract:The quasi-static transverse conductivity of clean Fermi liquids at long wavelengths displays a remarkably universal behaviour: it is determined solely by the radius of curvature of the Fermi surface and does not depend on details such as the quasi-particle mass or their interactions. Here we demonstrate that Berry phases do not alter such universality by directly computing the transverse conductivity of two-dimensional electronic systems with Dirac dispersions, such as those appearing in graphene and its chiral multilayer variants. Interestingly, however, such universality ceases to hold at wave-vectors comparable to the Fermi radius, where Dirac fermions display a vividly distict transverse conductivity relative to parabolic Fermions, with a rich wave-vector dependence that includes divergences, oscillations and zeroes. We discuss how this can be probed by measuring the $T_1$ relaxation time of spin qubits, such as NV centers or nuclear spins, placed near such 2D systems.

Abstract:Berry phase is a powerful concept that unravels the nontrivial role of topology in phenomena observed in chiral magnetic materials and structures. A celebrated example is the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) driven by the nonvanishing Berry phase in momentum space. As the AHE is dependent on details of the band structure near the Fermi edge, the Berry phase and AHE can be altered in thin films whose chemical potential is tunable by dimensionality and disorder. Here, we demonstrate how Berry phase in ultrathin SrRuO3 films provides a comprehensive explanation for the nontrivial Hall response which is conventionally attributed to the topological Hall effect (THE). Particularly, the Berry phase contribution to this effect can be altered, enhanced, and even change signs in response to the number of layers, temperature, and importantly, disorder. By comparing the effects of disorder theoretically on a skyrmion model and a spin-orbit coupled model, we show that disorder suppresses the THE while it can enhance the AHE. The experiments on more disordered samples confirm this interpretation, and proposed multichannel analysis judiciously explains the observed THE-like feature.

Wess-Zumino-Berry Phase Interference in Spin Tunnelling at Excited Levels with A Magnetic Field

Abstract:Macroscopic quantum coherence and spin-phase interference between excited levels in single-domain ferromagnetic particles in a magnetic field along the hard-anisotropy axis are studied. The system has a general structure of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy, such as one showing a biaxial, trigonal, tetragonal, or hexagonal symmetry. This study not only yields the previously obtained spin-phase interference results for the ground-state tunnelling, but also provides a generalization of the Kramers degeneracy to coherent spin tunnelling in low-lying excited states. These analytical results are found to be in good agreement with those from numerical diagonalization. We also discuss the transition from quantum to classical behaviour and the possible relevance to experiment.
Experimental Observation of Quantum Hall Effect and Berry's Phase in Graphene

Abstract:When electrons are confined in two-dimensional (2D) materials, quantum mechanically enhanced transport phenomena, as exemplified by the quantum Hall effects (QHE), can be observed. Graphene, an isolated single atomic layer of graphite, is an ideal realization of such a 2D system. Here, we report an experimental investigation of magneto transport in a high mobility single layer of graphene. Adjusting the chemical potential using the electric field effect, we observe an unusual half integer QHE for both electron and hole carriers in graphene. Vanishing effective carrier masses is observed at Dirac point in the temperature dependent Shubnikov de Haas oscillations, which probe the 'relativistic' Dirac particle-like dispersion. The relevance of Berry's phase to these experiments is confirmed by the phase shift of magneto-oscillations, related to the exceptional topology of the graphene band structure.

Abstract:When electrons are confined in two-dimensional materials, quantum-mechanically enhanced transport phenomena such as the quantum Hall effect can be observed. Graphene, consisting of an isolated single atomic layer of graphite, is an ideal realization of such a two-dimensional system. However, its behaviour is expected to differ markedly from the well-studied case of quantum wells in conventional semiconductor interfaces. This difference arises from the unique electronic properties of graphene, which exhibits electron–hole degeneracy and vanishing carrier mass near the point of charge neutrality1,2. Indeed, a distinctive half-integer quantum Hall effect has been predicted3,4,5 theoretically, as has the existence of a non-zero Berry's phase (a geometric quantum phase) of the electron wavefunction—a consequence of the exceptional topology of the graphene band structure6,7. Recent advances in micromechanical extraction and fabrication techniques for graphite structures8,9,10,11,12 now permit such exotic two-dimensional electron systems to be probed experimentally. Here we report an experimental investigation of magneto-transport in a high-mobility single layer of graphene. Adjusting the chemical potential with the use of the electric field effect, we observe an unusual half-integer quantum Hall effect for both electron and hole carriers in graphene. The relevance of Berry's phase to these experiments is confirmed by magneto-oscillations. In addition to their purely scientific interest, these unusual quantum transport phenomena may lead to new applications in carbon-based electronic and magneto-electronic devices.

Anomalous and Topological Hall Effects with Phase-Space Berry Curvatures: Electric, Thermal, and Thermoelectric Transport in Magnets

Abstract:We develop a theory for the electrical and thermal transverse linear response functions such as the Hall, Nernst and thermal Hall effects in magnetic materials that harbor topological spin textures like skyrmions. In addition to the ordinary transverse response that arises from the Lorentz force due to the external magnetic field, there is an anomalous and a topological response. The intrinsic anomalous response derives from the momentum space Berry curvature arising from the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in a system with a nonzero magnetization, while the topological response arises from real space Berry curvature related to the the topological charge density of the spin texture. To take into account all these effects on an equal footing, we develop a semiclassical theory that incorporates all phase-space Berry curvatures. We show within a controlled, semiclassical approach that all conductivities -- electrical, thermoelectric, and thermal Hall -- can be written as the sum of three contributions: ordinary, anomalous and topological, when the conduction electron SOC is weaker than the exchange coupling to the spin texture. All other contributions, including those arising from mixed real-momentum space Berry curvature, are negligible in the regime where our calculations are controlled. We derive various general relations that remain valid at low temperatures including the Weidemann-Franz relation between the electrical and thermal conductivities and the Mott relation between the thermoelectric and electrical conductivities. We also discuss how an in-plane Hall response arises in three-dimensional materials with sufficiently low symmetry. Finally, the Hall response is qualitatively different when the conduction electron SOC is stronger than the exchange coupling to the spin texture, where we find that the anomalous term dominates and the topological term vanishes.

Abstract:Berry phases occur when a system adiabatically evolves along a closed curve in parameter space. This tutorial-like article focuses on Berry phases accumulated in real space. In particular, we consider the situation where an electron traverses a smooth magnetic structure, while its magnetic moment adjusts to the local magnetization direction. Mapping the adiabatic physics to an effective problem in terms of emergent fields reveals that certain magnetic textures - skyrmions - are tailormade to study these Berry phase effects.

Abstract:At sufficiently low temperatures magnetic materials often enter a correlated phase hosting collective, coherent magnetic excitations such as magnons or triplons. Drawing on the enormous progress on topological materials of the last few years, recent research has led to new insights into the geometry and topology of these magnetic excitations. Berry phases associated to magnetic dynamics can lead to observable consequences in heat and spin transport while analogues of topological insulators and semimetals can arise within magnon band structures from natural magnetic couplings. Magnetic excitations offer a platform to explore the interplay of magnetic symmetries and topology, to drive topological transitions using magnetic fields. examine the effects of interactions on topological bands and to generate topologically protected spin currents at interfaces. In this review, we survey progress on all these topics, highlighting aspects of topological matter that are unique to magnon systems and the avenues yet to be fully investigated.

Abstract:Magnonics or magnon spintronics is an emerging field focusing on generating, detecting, and manipulating magnons. As charge-neutral quasi-particles, magnons are promising information carriers because of their low energy dissipation and long coherence length. In the past decade, topological phases in magnonics have attracted intensive attention due to their fundamental importance in condensed-matter physics and potential applications of spintronic devices. In this review, we mainly focus on recent progress in topological magnonics, such as the Hall effect of magnons, magnon Chern insulators, topological magnon semimetals, etc. In addition, the evidence supporting topological phases in magnonics and candidate materials are also discussed and summarized. The aim of this review is to provide readers with a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the recent developments in topological magnonics.
