Abstract:Berry curvature and orbital moment of the Bloch state are two basic ingredients, in addition to the band energy, that must be included in the formulation of semiclassical dynamics of electrons in crystals, in order to give proper account of thermodynamic and transport properties to first order in the electromagnetic field. These quantities are gauge invariant and have direct physical significance as demonstrated by numerous applications in recent years. Generalization to the case of degenerate bands has also been achieved recently, with important applications in spin-dependent transport. The reader is assured that a knowledge of these ingredients of the semiclassical dynamics is also sufficient for the construction of an effective quantum theory, valid to the same order of the field, using a new quantization procedure that generalizes the venerable Peierls substitution rule. We cite the relativistic Dirac electron and the carrier in semiconductors as two prime examples to demonstrate our theory and compare with previous work on such systems. We also establish general relations between different levels of effective theories in a hierarchy.
Berry curvature associated to Fermi arcs in continuum and lattice Weyl systems

Abstract:Recently it has been discovered that in Weyl semimetals the surface state Berry curvature can diverge in certain regions of momentum. This occurs in a continuum description of tilted Weyl cones, which for a slab geometry results in the Berry curvature dipole associated to the surface Fermi arcs growing linearly with slab thickness. Here we investigate analytically incarnations of lattice Weyl semimetals and demonstrate this diverging surface Berry curvature by solving for their surface states and connect these to their continuum descriptions. We show how the shape of the Fermi arc and the Berry curvature hot-line is determined and confirm the 1/k^2 divergence of the Berry curvature at the end of the Fermi arc as well as the finite size effects for the Berry curvature and its dipole, using finite slab calculations and surface Green's function methods. We further establish that apart from affecting the second order, non-linear Hall effect, the divergent Berry curvature has a strong impact on other transport phenomena as the Magnus-Hall effect and the non-linear chiral anomaly.

Abstract:The discovery of topological quantum materials represents a striking innovation in modern condensed matter physics with remarkable fundamental and technological implications. Their classification has been recently extended to topological Weyl semimetals, i.e., solid state systems which exhibit the elusive Weyl fermions as low-energy excitations. Here we show that the Nernst effect can be exploited as a sensitive probe for determining key parameters of the Weyl physics, applying it to the non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Ge. This compound exhibits anomalous thermoelectric transport due to enhanced Berry curvature from Weyl points located extremely close to the Fermi level. We establish from our data a direct measure of the Berry curvature at the Fermi level and, using a minimal model of a Weyl semimetal, extract for the first time the Weyl point energy and their distance in momentum-space.

Adiabatic observables and Berry curvatures in insulators and metals

Abstract:A sharp definition of what "adiabatic" means is given; it is then shown that the time-dependent expectation value of a quantum-mechanical observable in the adiabatic limit can be expressed -- in many cases -- by means of the appropriate Berry curvature. Condensed-matter observables belonging to this class include: Born effective charges in insulators and in metals, quantized Faraday charges in electrolytes, and linear dc conductivities (longitudinal and transverse). Remarkably, the adiabatic limit is well defined even in metals, despite the absence of a spectral gap therein. For all of the above observables the explicit Berry-curvature expressions are derived in a general many-body setting, which also allows for compact and very transparent notations and formulas. Their conversion into band-structure formulas in the independent-electron crystalline case is straightforward.

Abstract:We construct a theory for the semiclassical dynamics of superconducting quasiparticles by following their wave packet motion and reveal rich contents of Berry curvature effects in the phase space spanned by position and momentum. These Berry curvatures are traced back to the characteristics of superconductivity, including the nontrivial momentum-space geometry of superconducting pairing, the real-space supercurrent, and the charge dipole of quasiparticles. The Berry-curvature effects strongly influence the spectroscopic and transport properties of superconductors, such as the local density of states and the thermal Hall conductivity. As a model illustration, we apply the theory to study the twisted bilayer graphene with a d_{x^{2}+y^{2}}+id_{xy} superconducting gap function and demonstrate Berry-curvature induced effects.
Surface induced electronic Berry curvature in Berry curvature free bulk materials

Abstract:In recent years it has become clear that electronic Berry curvature (BC) is a key concept to understand and predict physical properties of crystalline materials. A wealth of interesting Hall-type responses in charge, spin and heat transport are caused by the BC associated to electronic bands inside a solid: anomalous Hall effects in magnetic materials, and various nonlinear Hall and Nernst effects in non-magnetic systems that lack inversion symmetry. However, for the largest class of known materials -- non-magnetic ones with inversion symmetry -- electronic BC is strictly zero. Here we show that precisely for these bulk BC-free materials, a finite BC can emerge at their surfaces and interfaces. This immediately activates certain surfaces in producing Hall-type transport responses. We demonstrate this by first principles calculations of the BC at bismuth, mercury-telluride (HgTe) and rhodium surfaces of various symmetries, revealing the presence of a surface Berry curvature dipole and associated quantum nonlinear Hall effects at a number of these. This opens up a plethora of materials to explore and harness the physical effects emerging from the electronic Berry curvature associated exclusively to their boundaries.

Abstract:Berry curvature is a fundamental element to characterize topological quantum physics, while a full measurement of Berry curvature in momentum space was not reported for topological states. Here we achieve two-dimensional Berry curvature reconstruction in a photonic quantum anomalous Hall system via Hall transport measurement of a momentum-resolved wave packet. Integrating measured Berry curvature over the two-dimensional Brillouin zone, we obtain Chern numbers corresponding to −1 and 0. Further, we identify bulk-boundary correspondence by measuring topology-linked chiral edge states at the boundary. The full topological characterization of photonic Chern bands from Berry curvature, Chern number, and edge transport measurements enables our photonic system to serve as a versatile platform for further in-depth study of novel topological physics. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.131.133601 © 2023 American Physical Society

Abstract:Under symmetry breaking, a three-dimensional nodal-line semimetal can turn into a topological insulator or Weyl semimetal, accompanied by the generation of momentum-space Berry curvature. We develop a theory that unifies their circular dichroism and highlights the roles of Berry curvature distribution and light incident direction. Nontrivially, these phases exhibit distinct dichroic optical absorption and radial Hall effects, with characteristic scalings with photon energy and electric field. Our findings offer a new diagnosis tool for examining topological phases of matter.

Abstract:These are lecture notes compiled for a short lecture series at the 2023 Condensed Matter Summer School at the University of Minnesota. They are designed to be conversational and fun, and not to take the place of review articles that do a serious job of stating things precisely and citing literature thoroughly. The goal of the notes is to introduce some central ideas underlying the study of entanglement dynamics in random unitary circuits and the measurement-induced entanglement phase transition. A particular focus is the concept of the "minimal cut" and its associated stat mech mappings.

Abstract:Understanding Dirac-like Fermions has become an imperative in modern condensed matter sciences: all across its research frontier, from graphene to high T$_c$ superconductors to the topological insulators and beyond, various electronic systems exhibit properties which can be well described by the Dirac equation. Such physics is no longer the exclusive domain of quantum field theories and other esoteric mathematical musings; instead, real physics of real systems is governed by such equations, and important materials science and practical implications hinge on our understanding of Dirac particles in two and three dimensions. While the physics that gives rise to the massless Dirac Fermions in each of the above mentioned materials is different, the low energy properties are governed by the same Dirac kinematics. The aim of this article is to review a selected cross-section of this vast field by highlighting the generalities, and contrasting the specifics, of several physical systems.

Abstract:In these lecture notes, the basic physics of Fermi liquids and Luttinger liquids is presented. Fermi liquids are discussed both from a phenomenological viewpoint, in relation to microscopic approaches, and as renormalization group fixed points. Luttinger liquids are introduced using the bosonization formalism, and their essential differences with Fermi liquids are pointed out. Applications to transport effects, the effect of disorder, quantum spin chains, and spin ladders, both insulating and metallic, are given.

Abstract:The topology of the electronic band structure of solids can be described by its Berry curvature distribution across the Brillouin zone. We theoretically introduce and experimentally demonstrate a general methodology based on the measurement of energy- and momentum-resolved optical transition rates, allowing to reveal signatures of Berry curvature texture in reciprocal space. By performing time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of atomically thin WSe$_2$ using polarization-modulated excitations, we demonstrate that excitons become an asset in extracting the quantum geometrical properties of solids. We also investigate the resilience of our measurement protocol against ultrafast scattering processes following direct chiroptical transitions.

Abstract:Ever since its discovery the notion of Berry phase has permeated through all branches of physics. Over the past three decades it was gradually realized that the Berry phase of the electronic wave function can have a profound effect on material properties and is responsible for a spectrum of phenomena, such as polarization, orbital magnetism, various (quantum, anomalous, or spin) Hall effects, and quantum charge pumping. This progress is summarized in a pedagogical manner in this review. A brief summary of necessary background is given and a detailed discussion of the Berry phase effect in a variety of solid-state applications. A common thread of the review is the semiclassical formulation of electron dynamics, which is a versatile tool in the study of electron dynamics in the presence of electromagnetic fields and more general perturbations. Finally, a requantization method is demonstrated that converts a semiclassical theory to an effective quantum theory. It is clear that the Berry phase should be added as an essential ingredient to our understanding of basic material properties.

Abstract:We develop a semiclassical theory for the dynamics of electrons in a magnetic Bloch band, where the Berry phase plays an important role. This theory, together with the Boltzmann equation, provides a framework for studying transport problems in high magnetic fields. We also derive an Onsager-like formula for the quantization of cyclotron orbits, and we find a connection between the number of orbits and Hall conductivity. This connection is employed to explain the clustering structure of the Hofstadter spectrum. The advantage of this theory is its generality and conceptual simplicity.

Abstract:Topology is now securely established as a means to explore and classify electronic states in crystalline solids. This review provides a gentle but firm introduction to topological electronic band structure suitable for new researchers in the field. I begin by outlining the relevant concepts from topology, then give a summary of the theory of non-interacting electrons in periodic potentials. Next, I explain the concepts of the Berry phase and Berry curvature, and derive key formulae. The remainder of the article deals with how these ideas are applied to classify crystalline solids according to the topology of the electronic states, and the implications for observable properties. Among the topics covered are the role of symmetry in determining band degeneracies in momentum space, the Chern number and Z2 topological invariants, surface electronic states, two- and three-dimensional topological insulators, and Weyl and Dirac semimetals

Abstract:Chiral anomaly and the novel quantum phenomena it induces have been widely studied for Dirac and Weyl fermions. In most typical cases, the Lorentz covariance is assumed and thus the linear dispersion relations are maintained. However, in realistic materials, such as Dirac and Weyl semimetals, the nonlinear dispersion relations appear naturally. We develop a kinetic framework to study the chiral anomaly for Weyl fermions with nonlinear dispersions using the methods of Wigner function and semi-classical equations of motion. In this framework, the chiral anomaly is sourced by Berry monopoles in momentum space and could be enhanced or suppressed due to the windings around the Berry monopoles. Our results can help understand the chiral anomaly-induced transport phenomena in non-relativistic systems.
