Abstract:The multi-component glass fibers have demonstrated their unique advantages in the application of single-frequency lasers due to their higher solubility of rare-earth ions and thus a higher gain per unit length in a compact fiber laser cavity. In this study, multi-component yttrium aluminosilicate (YAS) fiber with high doping concentration of Yb3+ was prepared by the "melt-in-tube" (MIT) method. A unit-length gain of 3 dB/cm was obtained in a 4.4 cm-long YAS fiber, the laser output slope efficiency reached 23.8% in a 10 cm-long Yb:YAS fiber. Single-frequency laser operation was achieved in a 1.7-cm-long Yb:YAS active fiber. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of single-frequency laser with this YAS glass fiber as gain medium. The novel multi-component YAS fiber can be applied as a new gain material to realize single-frequency fiber laser.

Abstract:Yttrium aluminosilicate (YAS) glass core fibers with different doping concentration of Tm3+ were fabricated by a Melt-in-Tube method from YAG polycrystalline ceramics. The effect of Tm3+ concentration on the spectroscopy of YAG ceramics and laser performance of YAS fibers were discussed. A homemade linear all-fiber laser based on the obtained 15% Tm3+-doped YAS fiber shows an optimized slope efficiency of 12.8%. The YAS fibers have been proven to be practical to achieve extremely high Tm3+ doping concentration and are a promising option for the 2.0m laser.

Abstract:We report the design, fabrication and characterization of a Nd-doped silicate-glass-based all-solid anti-resonant fiber (Nd-AS-ARF) for 0.9 μm laser. Through the rod-in-tube technique combined with high-temperature drawing, the Nd-AS-ARF was successfully fabricated with a background loss of 0.3 dB/m at 1200 nm. The results of electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) test indicate a significantly diffusion of the Ba element accompanying the fiber drawing process. Additional thermal annealing could further enhance element diffusion, enabling the active regulation of the resonant band towards longer wavelengths. In the 30 cm-long Nd-AS-ARF, the loss at 1.06 μm is 10.5 dB higher than at 0.92 μm, favoring the Nd three-level laser. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a rare-earth doped AS-ARF is fabricated.

Abstract:The utilization of single-frequency fiber lasers spans critical domains including gravitational wave detection, coherent optical communication, and atomic physics. Glass fibers doped with rare earth ions serve as pivotal gain media for them, and the quest for advanced fiber matrices is paramount. Herein, a newly developed Nd3+-doped AlF3-Na2SO4-KPO3-Zn(PO3)(2) glass is reported. The glass showcases exceptional attributes including high anti-crystallization stability (>150(degrees)C), elastic modulus (75 GPa), chemical durability (8.1x10(-7)g & sdot;cm(-2)& sdot;min(-1)), Nd3+ concentration (>10(20) ions/cm3), broad effective linewidth (45 nm), and extended lifetime (465 mu s), surpassing those of conventional silica and phosphate glasses. Moreover, a custom-designed double-clad Nd3+-doped fiber with a net gain coefficient of 3.2 dB/cm at 1064 nm is fabricated, and single-frequency laser output with a narrow linewidth of 11 kHz has been obtained utilizing a 1.4-cm-long fiber, indicating the potential of this fiber as a promising gain medium for ultra-narrow-linewidth single-frequency fiber lasers.

Abstract:By using modified chemical vapor deposition system combined with chelate precursor doping technique, we report on the fabrication and characterization of Yb-doped aluminophosphosilicate (Al2O3-P2O 5-SiO2) laser fiber. Based on a master oscillator power amplifier laser setup and pumped directly by 976 nm laser diodes, 3.1 kW laser at 1064 nm was achieved with a slope efficiency of 78.4. Benefiting from codoped Al and P, the laser output power showed no evidence of roll-over. The linear fitting of the output power versus the pump power shows the potentiality for further power scaling. The results indicate that chelate precursor doping technique is a competitive method for rare-earth-ion-doped fiber preform fabrication, and aluminophosphosilicate host material has potentiality to develop multi-kW level laser fibers.

Abstract:High quality Yb and Ho co-doped Y(3)A1(5)0(12) single crystal fibers have been successfully grown by the laser heated pedestal growth method of up to 124 mm in length and 450 mu m in diameter for the first time. The results of inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry analysis, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy reveal that the lattice structure and doping concentrations of the SCF are the same as that of the bulk. Abstract:YAG crystal-derived all-glass silica fibers (YDSFs) with different doping concentrations of Er3 were fabricated using the molten-core method. A maximum gain coefficient of 1.46 dBcm was obtained when an Er:YAG rod at a doping concentration of 5 at. was used as the precursor material. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest gain coefficient at the 1.5-m band in similar YDSFs. The diffusion between the Er:YAG core and silica cladding was investigated during the whole preparation process. Based on the homemade Er3-doped YDSF, a 1.55-m pulsed single-frequency YDSF laser was demonstrated for the first time, delivering an output power of 24.2 mW when the absorbed pump power was 174 mW. The corresponding slope efficiency was 15.1. A single-pulse energy of 32.7 nJ was obtained with a pulse duration of 78 ns and a repetition rate of 739 kHz. The signal-to-noise ratio was higher than 75 dB.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of low segregation coefficient of Nd3+ ions in YAG crystal, Sc3+ ions are used to replace some Al3+ ions in YAG, so that the YAG cell becomes bigger, thereby the segregation coefficient of Nd3+ ion increases. In this paper, the spectra and laser characteristics of Nd:YSAG single crystal are studied. The (1.5 at.%) Nd3+:Y3Sc2Al3O12 (YSAG) laser crystal is grown by Czochralski method, and X-ray rocking curve shows that the crystal quality is good. The concentration of ions in Nd:YSAG is measured by an electronic probe. The segregation coefficient of Nd3+ ion is calculated to be 0.35, which is approximately twice as much as that of Nd3+ in YAG. The absorption and emission spectra are measured, which indicates that it can be pumped by an 808 nm-laser diode (LD). The strongest emission from the transition 4F3/24I11/2 of Nd:YSAG peaks at 1059 nm with an emission cross section of 1.0310-19 cm2, and the lifetime of 4F3/2 is about 253 s, which indicates that Nd:YSAG has roughly an efficiency equal to that of Nd:YAG, but the laser upper level lifetime is longer than that of Nd:YAG, which is more favorable for Q-switched laser operation. The 808 nm-LD is used to pump Nd:YSAG rod of 2 mm2 mm6 mm, the laser operation with a threshold of 0.85 W and a maximum output power of 1.1 W is realized:the laser slope efficiency is 21.1%, and the optical conversion efficiency is 18.3%. All of the above results show that Nd:YSAG single crystal is a good solid state laser material, which is more favorable for Q-switched laser operation.

Abstract:Nd3+ doped multi-component phosphate glass was prepared by the conventional melt-quenching method. The absorption spectrum, emission spectrum, and fluorescence lifetime of the prepared glass were measured. Based on the absorption spectrum, Judd-Ofelt (J-O) intensity parameters, spectroscopic quality factor, absorption and emission cross-sections, and figure of merit were calculated and analyzed. What is more, multi-material fibers with Nd3+ doped multi-component phosphate glass core and silicate glass cladding were successfully drawn by using the molten core method. The Nd3+ doping concentration reaches as high as 3.82 × 1020 ions/cm3 (3.86 wt.%). More importantly, 1.05 μm amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) was realized in a 4-cm-long as-drawn multi-material fiber when pumped by an 808 nm laser diode (LD). These results suggest that the Nd3+ doped multi-component phosphate glass multi-material fibers are promising gain material for 1.05 μm fiber laser applications.

Abstract:A Nd3+-doped Y2.8ScAl4.2O12 (Nd:YSAG) single crystal was grown successfully via the Czochralski technology. The crystal structure and crystalline quality of the as-grown Nd:YSAG crystal were determined by the X-ray powder diffraction and X-ray rocking curve, respectively. By X-ray fluorescence analysis, the effective segregation coefficient of Nd3+ is calculated to be 0.33 in the YSAG crystal. Using the chemical etching method, the dislocation density on the (111)-crystalline face is obtained to be about 3.45 × 102 cm−2. The large absorption cross-section (2.95 × 10−20 cm2) and wide FWHM (9.8 nm) around 808.8 nm imply a high LD pumping efficiency. The high emission cross-section (3.53 × 10−20 cm2) at 1336.3 nm and long fluorescence lifetime of Nd3+ ions (286.20 μs) are beneficial to realize laser output. Thereby, all the results indicate that the Nd:YSAG crystal is a potentially new gain material pumped by a LD for near-infrared laser at 1336.3 nm.

Abstract:A graded-index fiber with yttrium aluminosilicate (YAS) glass core was fabricated by a Melt-in-Tube method. The refractive index and stress profiles of the fibers exhibit a highly symmetrical gradient tendency along the radial axis which is in accordance with the results of element migration. Based on the formation mechanism of YAS glass core, the relationships between the refractive index/stress profile and the spontaneous migration are discussed. A linear all-fiber laser based on the obtained fiber shows a laser output threshold of 11.48 mW and slope efficiency of 8.3%. The near-field beam intensity distribution of fiber laser with spectrum FWHM of 0.24 nm indicates the good laser beam quality. The facile Melt-in-tube method was proved to be reliable in designing graded-index fiber through the dissolution and diffusion process, which is more advanced than commonly used Rod-in-tube method.

Abstract:Demands are increasing for ultrashort pulse laser in industrial applications, where the gain bandwidth of most optical fiber material is not wide enough, and developing a wide bandwidth gain medium is challenging. Glass-ceramic fibers containing Nd3+/Yb3+ co-doped YCa4O(BO3)(3) nanocrystals were fabricated by the molten core method and successive heat treatment. After a careful heat treatment, Nd3+/Yb3+ co-doped YCa4O(BO3)(3) nanocrystals were precipitated in the fiber core. Enhanced broadband near-infrared (NIR) emission from 850 to 1150 nm (bandwidth: similar to 252 nm) was obtained in the glass-ceramic fiber compared to that of precursor fiber. These results suggest that the Nd3+/Yb3+ glass-ceramic fibers are promising for broadband NIR optical amplifications and lasers.

Abstract:The fiber laser in the range of 900-1000 nm is essential to generate the blue fiber laser through frequency doubling for the laser display, laser underwater communications, and laser lighting. Yet, the well-developed three-level Yb-doped fiber laser can only realize the blue-green fiber laser at around 490 nm, which is far from the pure blue area (450 nm). To further achieve the pure blue fiber laser, the Nd-doped fiber has emerged as a proper choice to realize a shorter wavelength laser (<920 nm) through the F3/24→I9/24 transition of Nd3+. Here, based on the facile "melt-in-tube" (MIT) method, a novel Nd-doped high alumina and yttria glass @ silica glass hybrid fiber was successfully prepared using the Nd:YAG crystal as the precursor core. The crystal core converts to the amorphous glass state after the drawing process, as evidenced by Raman spectra. The gain coefficient at 915 nm of the hybrid fiber reaches 0.4 dB/cm. Further, the laser oscillation at 915 nm with over 50 dB signal-to-noise ratio was realized by a short 3.5 cm gain fiber. Our results indicate that MIT is a feasible strategy to produce novel fiber for generating fiber laser at special wavelengths.

Abstract:A method based on sol-gel preparation combined with silica tube inner wall coating and fusion-tapering technique for fabrication of ultrahighly rare-earth-doped fibers without fluorescent quenching is provided. Ultrahighly Yb-doped high SiO2 content glass fiber is developed and is easily spliced to commercial fiber-components. A ~ 1.03 μm laser with 70 dB-SNR and 0.2 nm-linewidth is achieved. The problem of low dissolution rate to rare-earth ions in silica fibers and the splicing problem between soft glass fibers and commercial fiber components have been overcome, indicating the method has potential in fabrication of short-cavity high-gain silica fiber which is applicable to single-frequency seed source. The method is worth exploring in that the core can extend to any heavily rare-earth-doped system as long as it can be realized in the sol form with good dispersion, therefore paving way for fabrication of silica-based single-frequency seed laser.

Abstract:Single-crystal (SC) fibers have the potential of delivering extremely high laser energies. Sapphire fibers have been the most commonly studied SC fiber and the losses for sapphire fibers have been as low as 0.4 dB/m for a 300-micron core-only fiber at 3 microns. In this study we report on the growth of SC yttrium aluminum garnet, Y3Al5O12 (YAG) fibers from undoped SC source rods using the Laser Heated Pedestal Growth (LHPG) technique. The advantage of YAG over sapphire is the slight improvement in IR transmission of YAG. The IR transmission of bulk YAG has been shown to extend to 5 mu m where the absorption coefficient is 0.6 cm(-1). The garnet family of crystals is one of the most commonly used oxide crystal hosts for lasing ions in high power solid-state lasers, with the most commercially common laser host being YAG. Thus, it is reasonable to assume that YAG fibers will have high laser damage thresholds. The optical losses for 400-mu m diameter YAG fibers have been measured to be about 3 dB/m at 2.94 mu m. The longest length of YAG fiber grown has been about 60 cm.
