Abstract:Polarization-insensitive waveguide crossings are indispensable components of photonic integrated circuits (PICs), enabling the concurrent computing of optical signals from diverse waveguides inside the limits of a restricted spatial footprint. Leveraging mirror symmetry direct binary search, we successfully demonstrate an ultra-compact and ultra-low loss polarization-insensitive waveguide crossing that achieves insertion losses below −0.11 dB and crosstalk levels beneath −22.6 dB for transverse electric (TE) mode, as well as insertion losses below 0.05 dB and crosstalk levels beneath −24.5 dB for transverse magnetic (TM) mode across the C-band with a footprint of 3 × 4 μm2. The results confirm that this mirror symmetry optimization method yields high-efficiency devices while reducing computational time. We believe this high-efficiency polarization-insensitive waveguide crossing can have potential applications in dense PIC systems.

Abstract:Intersected slot waveguide is proposed to strongly confine TE and TM modes simultaneously. Confinement factors as wells as single-mode condition are given for fully symmetrical a-Si/SiO2/SOI intersected slot waveguide and the SiNx-covered case @ 1.55 mum. A pertinent polarization- independent device can be realized by size tuning, or by employing the analyzed polarization converter to alternatively treat the polarized modes. The conversion efficiency is also investigated in size dependence by mode matching method.

Abstract:In this work, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a compact and low polarization-dependent silicon waveguide crossing based on subwavelength grating multimode interference couplers. The subwavelength grating structure decreases the effective refractive index difference and shrinks the device footprint. Our designed device is fabricated on the 220-nm SOI platform and performs well. The measured crossing is characterized with low insertion loss (< 1 dB), low polarization-dependence loss (< 0.6 dB), and low crosstalk (< -35 dB) for both TE and TM polarizations with a compact footprint of 12.5 μm × 12.5 μm.

Abstract:Waveguide crossing device is a fundamental building block for isolated propagation of two cross waveguides in silicon photonics. In this work, a genetic algorithm optimized compact silicon waveguide crossing of 5x5 mu m(2) for fundamental Transverse Electric (TE) mode is designed, fabricated, and tested. A measured insertion loss of 0.1-0.3 dB with a crosstalk of <-35 dB is achieved in such design scheme.

Abstract:In this Letter, an ultracompact silicon-based waveguide crossing for dual polarizations is proposed and experimentally demonstrated using subwavelength-hole-assisted multimode interference couplers. Thanks to the flexible and easy dispersion engineering in the introduced subwavelength-hole-assisted multimode interference couplers, the reduced and equal beat lengths for dual polarizations are accessible via careful parametric optimization, consequently enabling a substantially reduced device size. Experimental results indicate that the proposed crossing (13.6 × 13.6 μm 2 in size) features a low insertion loss of 1.03 dB (0.76 dB) and low crosstalk of –32.5 dB (–37.8 dB) at a central wavelength of 1550 nm for TE (TM) mode, with a broad bandwidth of ∼80 nm for crosstalk of <–18 dB.

Abstract:We design, fabricate, and characterize a compact dual-mode waveguide crossing on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The dual-mode waveguide crossing with high performance is designed by utilizing the adjoint shape optimization. This adjoint-method-based optimization algorithm is computationally efficient and yields the optimal solution in fewer iterations compared with other iterative schemes. Our proposed dual-mode waveguide crossing exhibits low insertion loss and low crosstalk. Experimental results show that the insertion losses at the wavelength of 1550 nm are 0.83 dB and 0.50 dB for TE0 and TE1 modes, respectively. The crosstalk is less than −20 dB for the two modes over a wavelength range of 80 nm. The footprint of the whole structure is only 5 × 5 μm2.

Abstract:Waveguide crossing is an important integrated photonic component that will be routinely used for high-density and large-scale photonic integrated circuits, such as optical switches and routers. Several techniques have been reported in achieving high performance waveguide crossings on a silicon-on-insulator photonic platform, i.e., low-loss and low-crosstalk waveguide crossings based on multimode interference, bi-layer tapering, optical transformation, metamaterials, and subwavelength gratings. Until recently, not much attention has been given to the reduction of the footprint of waveguide crossings. Here we experimentally demonstrate an ultra-compact waveguide crossing on silicon photonic platform with a footprint only similar to 1 x 1 mu m(2). Our simulations show that it has a low insertion loss (< 0.175 dB) and low crosstalk (< -37dB) across the whole C-band, while the fabricated one has an insertion loss < 0.28 dB and crosstalk around -30 dB for the C-band. Abstract:An ultralow-loss silicon planar waveguide crossing operating in the O-band was experimentally demonstrated based on the Gaussian beam synthesis method. Elliptical parabolic inverted tapers were introduced in our design to reduce the crossing loss. According to the measurement results, the proposed device exhibits an insertion loss of 0.008 dB, which is the lowest reported loss for planar silicon waveguide crossings operating in the O-band. The device exhibits a low crosstalk below -40 dB over a 40 nm wavelength range with a compact footprint of 18 × 18 µm2 and can be fabricated in a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor-compatible process.

Abstract:A high-performance broadband polarization-independent directional coupler is designed by using asymmetric-waveguides configuration on a silicon-on-insulator platform. Through the design of cascaded directional couplers, the coupling characteristics of the light with the orthogonally polarized transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) can be manipulated, so that the coupling strength could be equivalent between TE and TM polarizations within an ultra-broadband. Couplers with 50% splitting ratio are designed and simulated for operating in the wavelength range from 1450 nm to 1650 nm for both polarizations. Within the 100 nm wavelength range from 1500 nm to 1600 nm, the deviations of splitting ratio for TE polarization and TM polarization are ±3.3% and ±6.2%, respectively. And within the 200 nm wavelength range from 1450 nm to 1650 nm, the deviations for TE polarization and TM polarization are ±9.0% and ±7.8%, respectively. The footprint of this polarization-independent directional coupler is only 21 μm × 1.6 μm.

Abstract:A low-loss silicon rib waveguide crossing with low polarization dependence loss is proposed. The insertion loss for TE (TM) polarization mode is -0.14 dB (-0.29 dB) and the crosstalk is -28 dB (-30 dB) at 1550 nm. The footprint of this device is around 8×8 μm2.

Abstract:A polarization-insensitive waveguide crossing based on multimode interference (MMI) couplers is proposed and demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. By utilizing two orthogonal MMIs, the footprint of the device is about 23 μm×23 μm. The proposed device, easily fabricated with only one fully etched step, is characterized with low insertion losses and low crosstalks for both transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic polarizations from 1520 to 1610 nm bands.

Abstract:A polarization-insensitive waveguide crossing based on sub-wavelength gratings (SWGs) assisted multimode interference (MMI) is proposed and demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The proposed device is characterized with low insertion loss and low crosstalk for both TE and TM polarizations from 1500 nm to 1600 nm, 0.69 dB (0.61 dB) for TE (TM) at 1550 nm. The device can be fabricated with single etch process to achieve a footprint of 12.5×12.5 μm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> . Further analysis shows that the device has a fabrication tolerance of ±30 nm for the MMI structure. The proposed device can be employed in photonic integrated circuits with polarization-division-(de)multiplexing functionality.

Abstract:A simple design approach was presented to avoid the polarization dependence of magneto-optical(MO) waveguide by analyzing the nonreciprocal phase shift in order to widely spread the application of optical isolators,circulators and other nonreciprocal devices into the integrated photonic circuit.A higher refractive index region at one side of the MO core waveguide was involved laterally to break the symmetry of the field distribution.Then the polarization independence of nonreciprocal waveguide was realized.The analysis combined perturbation method and finite difference method shows that the relative derivation between TE and TM mode is lower than 1% while the width of the square single-mode waveguide is larger than 0.7 μm.The advantages in size,fabrication tolerance and design flexibility of the structure may facilitate the nonreciprocal optical device.

Abstract:To control the polarization of shallow etched ridge waveguide made of crystalline silicon on insulator (SOI), a non-rectangular section SOI waveguide is proposed. The transmittivity formulas of TE 0 and TM 0 in the proposed waveguide are deduced, and the finite difference time domain method is used for analysis. It is found that the transmittivity of TE 0 and TM 0 modes shows great deviation in some parameter range; however, the difference is less than 0.03% in some other parameters, which could be regarded as polarization independent. At the same time, the sensitivity to structure parameters of modes in the non-rectangular waveguide is lower than that of the rectangular. Therefore, the proposed non-rectangular SOI ridge waveguide is expected to improve the polarization independence of the waveguide.
