Abstract:A low-loss silicon rib waveguide crossing with low polarization dependence loss is proposed. The insertion loss for TE (TM) polarization mode is -0.14 dB (-0.29 dB) and the crosstalk is -28 dB (-30 dB) at 1550 nm. The footprint of this device is around 8×8 μm2.

Abstract:Intersected slot waveguide is proposed to strongly confine TE and TM modes simultaneously. Confinement factors as wells as single-mode condition are given for fully symmetrical a-Si/SiO2/SOI intersected slot waveguide and the SiNx-covered case @ 1.55 mum. A pertinent polarization- independent device can be realized by size tuning, or by employing the analyzed polarization converter to alternatively treat the polarized modes. The conversion efficiency is also investigated in size dependence by mode matching method.

Abstract:An ultralow-loss silicon planar waveguide crossing operating in the O-band was experimentally demonstrated based on the Gaussian beam synthesis method. Elliptical parabolic inverted tapers were introduced in our design to reduce the crossing loss. According to the measurement results, the proposed device exhibits an insertion loss of 0.008 dB, which is the lowest reported loss for planar silicon waveguide crossings operating in the O-band. The device exhibits a low crosstalk below -40 dB over a 40 nm wavelength range with a compact footprint of 18 × 18 µm2 and can be fabricated in a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor-compatible process.

Abstract:Polarization-insensitive waveguide crossings are indispensable components of photonic integrated circuits (PICs), enabling the concurrent computing of optical signals from diverse waveguides inside the limits of a restricted spatial footprint. Leveraging mirror symmetry direct binary search, we successfully demonstrate an ultra-compact and ultra-low loss polarization-insensitive waveguide crossing that achieves insertion losses below −0.11 dB and crosstalk levels beneath −22.6 dB for transverse electric (TE) mode, as well as insertion losses below 0.05 dB and crosstalk levels beneath −24.5 dB for transverse magnetic (TM) mode across the C-band with a footprint of 3 × 4 μm2. The results confirm that this mirror symmetry optimization method yields high-efficiency devices while reducing computational time. We believe this high-efficiency polarization-insensitive waveguide crossing can have potential applications in dense PIC systems.

Abstract:In this work, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a compact and low polarization-dependent silicon waveguide crossing based on subwavelength grating multimode interference couplers. The subwavelength grating structure decreases the effective refractive index difference and shrinks the device footprint. Our designed device is fabricated on the 220-nm SOI platform and performs well. The measured crossing is characterized with low insertion loss (< 1 dB), low polarization-dependence loss (< 0.6 dB), and low crosstalk (< -35 dB) for both TE and TM polarizations with a compact footprint of 12.5 μm × 12.5 μm.

Abstract:We demonstrated a SiN-SiN-Si three-layer silicon waveguide crossing with low-loss crossings and interlayer couplers. The underpass and overpass crossings exhibited ultralow loss (< 0.82/1.16 mdB) and cross talk (<-56/-48 dB) in the wave-length range of 1260-1340 nm. To reduce the loss and length of the interlayer coupler, a parabolic interlayer coupling structure was adopted. The measured interlayer coupling loss was less than 0.11 dB from 1260 to 1340 nm, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the lowest loss reported for an interlayer coupler based on a SiN-SiN-Si three-layer plat-form. Abstract:An ultra-low-loss coupler for interfacing a silicon-on-insulator ridge waveguide and a single-mode fiber in both polarizations is presented. The inverted taper coupler, embedded in a polymer waveguide, is optimized for both the transverse-magnetic and transverse-electric modes through tapering the width of the silicon-on-insulator waveguide from 450nm down to less than 15nm applying a thermal oxidation process. Two inverted taper couplers are integrated with a 3-mm long silicon-on-insulator ridge waveguide in the fabricated sample. The measured coupling losses of the inverted taper coupler for transverse-magnetic and transverse-electric modes are ∼0.36dB and ∼0.66dB per connection, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, an on-chip silicon polarization beam splitter using a particle-swarm-optimized counter-tapered directional coupler is proposed, designed, and fabricated. The coupling length of the proposed device is only 5 µm. As the waveguide width variation ΔW increases from -20 to 20 nm, the simulated polarization extinction ratio larger than 18.67 dB and the corresponding insertion loss lower than 0.17 dB are achieved. Measured experimental results achieved insertion loss <0.50 dB, TE polarization extinction between 16.68 to 31.87 dB, TM polarization extinction between 17.78 to 31.13 dB, over the wavelength range 1525 to 1600 nm.

Abstract:In this Letter, a 1 × 3 polarization-insensitive optical power splitter based on cascaded tapered silicon waveguides is proposed and experimentally demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator platform. By utilizing the particle swarm optimization algorithm and the finite difference time domain method, the structural parameters of the coupling regions are carefully designed to achieve polarization-insensitive property, compact size, low insertion loss, high uniformity, and broad bandwidth. The coupling length can be as short as 7.3 µm. Our measurement results show that, at 1550 nm, the insertion losses of the fabricated device operating in transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarizations are, respectively, 0.068 dB and 0.62 dB. Within a bandwidth from 1525 to 1575 nm, the insertion loss is lower than 0.82 dB and the uniformity is less than 1 dB for the fabricated device operating in TE polarization, while the fabricated device operating in TM polarization can have an insertion loss smaller than 1.50 dB and a uniformity lower than 1 dB from 1528 to 1582 nm.

Abstract:In this Letter, an ultracompact silicon-based waveguide crossing for dual polarizations is proposed and experimentally demonstrated using subwavelength-hole-assisted multimode interference couplers. Thanks to the flexible and easy dispersion engineering in the introduced subwavelength-hole-assisted multimode interference couplers, the reduced and equal beat lengths for dual polarizations are accessible via careful parametric optimization, consequently enabling a substantially reduced device size. Experimental results indicate that the proposed crossing (13.6 × 13.6 μm 2 in size) features a low insertion loss of 1.03 dB (0.76 dB) and low crosstalk of –32.5 dB (–37.8 dB) at a central wavelength of 1550 nm for TE (TM) mode, with a broad bandwidth of ∼80 nm for crosstalk of <–18 dB.

Abstract:A polarization-insensitive waveguide crossing based on sub-wavelength gratings (SWGs) assisted multimode interference (MMI) is proposed and demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The proposed device is characterized with low insertion loss and low crosstalk for both TE and TM polarizations from 1500 nm to 1600 nm, 0.69 dB (0.61 dB) for TE (TM) at 1550 nm. The device can be fabricated with single etch process to achieve a footprint of 12.5×12.5 μm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> . Further analysis shows that the device has a fabrication tolerance of ±30 nm for the MMI structure. The proposed device can be employed in photonic integrated circuits with polarization-division-(de)multiplexing functionality.

Abstract:An ultra-compact and low-loss transverse-electric (TE)-pass polarizer is proposed by utilizing a hybrid plasmonic ridge waveguide structure on a silicon-on-insulator platform. Since the transmission of a plasmonic polarizer is greatly influenced by the interaction between the metal and the optical field, there is a large insertion loss (IL) in the polarizer based on a hybrid plasmonic waveguide. Here, the electric field distribution and the periodic coupling between the fundamental transverse magnetic mode and plasmonic mode are taken into consideration to decrease the IL and shorten the length of the device. For a 4.2 mu m-long polarizer, numerical simulations with the finite-differential-time-domain method show that it has a large extinction ratio (ER) of similar to 29.5 dB with a low IL of 0.18 dB at the central wavelength 1550 nm. In addition, a more than 23 dB ER is achieved across a wide bandwidth of 100 nm. (C) 2018 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A polarization-insensitive waveguide crossing based on multimode interference (MMI) couplers is proposed and demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. By utilizing two orthogonal MMIs, the footprint of the device is about 23 μm×23 μm. The proposed device, easily fabricated with only one fully etched step, is characterized with low insertion losses and low crosstalks for both transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic polarizations from 1520 to 1610 nm bands.

Abstract:Waveguide crossing device is a fundamental building block for isolated propagation of two cross waveguides in silicon photonics. In this work, a genetic algorithm optimized compact silicon waveguide crossing of 5x5 mu m(2) for fundamental Transverse Electric (TE) mode is designed, fabricated, and tested. A measured insertion loss of 0.1-0.3 dB with a crosstalk of <-35 dB is achieved in such design scheme.

Abstract:An ultracompact and low-loss TM-pass polarizer on silicon is proposed and demonstrated experimentally with a subwavelength-grating (SWG) waveguide. The SWG waveguide is designed to support Bloch mode for TM polarization so that the incident TM-polarized light goes through the SWG waveguide with very low excess loss. On the other hand, for TE polarization, the SWG waveguide works as a Bragg reflector, and consequently the incident TE-polarized light is reflected. For a fabricated similar to 9 mu m long polarizer (with the period number N = 20), the measured extinction ratio is similar to 27 dB and the excess loss is similar to 0.5 dB at the central wavelength 1550 nm. The bandwidth to achieve an extinction ratio of 20 dB is about 60 nm (from 1520 to 1580 nm). When increasing the period number to N = 40, the measured extinction ratio is up to 40 dB (which is not as high as the expected theoretical value 65 dB due to the limit of the measurement system). Abstract:An on-chip TE-pass polarizer working near 850nm band is designed and fabricated on silicon nitride platform. The structure is very simple, using a straight silicon nitride waveguide separated from a metal strip by a low index silicon oxide spacer layer. By optimizing the thickness of the spacer layer, the metal strip introduces more loss for TM mode than TE mode. The measured extinction ratio of the fabricated device is around 20dB over a 16nm wavelength range from 837nm to 853nm for a 3mm-long polarizer.
