Abstract:Mechanical alloying of a powder mixture of elemental Al and graphite has been performed in a high-energy ball mill. The structural evolution has been characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The carbide Al4C3 is first formed as an intermediate product. Further milling leads to destabilization of Al4C3. It is proposed that destabilization of Al4C3 is induced by the accumulated defects and the high pressure due to collision of the balls. Balling milling of the elemental AlC powder mixture finally results in a f.c.c. solid solution with a carbon content up to 23 at%. Whereas an amorphous phase is formed in the composition range of 28–50 at% C.

Abstract:A detailed knowledge of structural evolution during mechanical alloying (MA) is of interest and critical for understanding of synthesis mechanism, optimization of milling process, and control of milling products. The structural evolution of the 2Si-BN-3C mixture with a molar ratio of Si:BN:C = 2:1:3 during MA was studied by investigating the changes of phases, morphologies, elemental distributions, microstructures, and chemical bond states using XRD, SEM-EDS, TEM, XPS, and Raman. With the increases in milling time, the particle sizes of the milled 2Si-BN-3C powders first decrease to submicrometers (similar to 1 hour), slightly increase afterward (similar to 3 hours), and eventually decrease to nanoscales gradually reaching equilibrium (>= 10 hours). Depending on the intrinsic crystal structures of themselves, h-BN and graphite are almost amorphized after milling of 10 hours, while amorphization of c-Si takes at least 20 hours. The same milling parameters can provide amorphous Si2BC3N powders, but incompletely amorphous (partially crystalline) SiC powders, which is mainly due to the dilution effect of B and N atoms on the atomic concentration of Si and C hindering the microdiffusion and subsequent mechanochemical reaction of Si and C. Crystallite refinement-induced amorphization is the major synthesis mechanism of amorphous Si2BC3N powders. This work would offer more insight into the MA synthesis of multiple component materials, especially Si-based brittle systems.

Abstract:In order to study the amorphization transformation process of SiBCN-Ta4HfC5 ceramic during mechanical alloying, SiBCN-Ta4HfC5 amorphous-nanocrystalline powders were prepared and the evolution of phase, chemical valence bond and morphology of the samples during mechanical alloying were analyzed by XRD, FT-IR, Raman, XPS, SEM and TEM. In addition, the mechanism of amorphous transformation of SiBCN-Ta4HfC5 was revealed. The results show that h-BN and graphite are preferentially transformed into amorphous state, while c-Si is finally amorphized. The amorphous process of c-Si was accelerated by the introduction of nano-Ta4HfC5. The mechanical alloying process is accompanied by the formation of chemical bonds such as B-C-N, N-C and Si-C. However, Ta4HfC5 is still distributed in amorphous SiBCN in the form of nanocrystals.

Abstract:In this research, a high-energy mechanical milling process was used to create an amorphous alloy composed of Ni60Nb13.3Zr13.3Ti13.3. Hexane served as the process control agent during the preparation. The possibility of the amorphous phase formation in the proposed alloy was investigated using Miedema's semi-empirical model. In addition, the structures of the milled and annealed samples were studied by XRD and HRTEM. Moreover, the mechanical properties and thermal stability of the prepared amorphous alloy were examined by nanoindentation analysis and DTA/TG analysis, respectively. The thermodynamic prediction shows that the amorphous phase structure can form in the Ni 60 Nb 13.3 Zr 13.3 Ti 13.3 alloy and the results of the experimental tests confirmed it. The amorphous phase formed in this alloy after 20 h of milling. The findings indicated that the hardness and Young's modulus of the amorphous sample were 15.32 GPa and 179.31 GPa, respectively. Additionally, the amorphous phase exhibited remarkable thermal stability up to 889 °C.

Abstract:The A15 phase superconductor Nb3Al has been considered as an alternative to Nb3Sn for high field and large scale applications. However, to prepare a stoichiometric Nb3Al with fine grain structures is very difficult. High-energy ball milling is a solid state powder processing technique and is a very useful for preparing Nb-Al alloys (Nb3Al). The effects of ball milling time and annealing temperature on the formation of Nb3Al superconducting phase have been studied. Pure Nb and Al powders with stoichiometric ratio of Nb3Al were mixed and milled, and the charging and milling were performed in an inert atmosphere. Phase formation and structural evolution during high-energy ball milling have been examined by X-ray diffraction. Al disappeared and Nb peaks broadened after about one hour of milling. With increasing milling time, the peaks of Nb became considerably broader and intensities decreased, the Nb-Al solid solution phase was extensive when milled about 3 hours. In order to obtain Nb3Al superconducting phase, a subsequent anneal was required. We have annealed the as-milled powders at 800-900°C for different times to prepared Nb3Al superconducting alloy. The results indicated that Nb3Al with small amount of impurity phase can be obtained on annealing the Nb-Al solid solution phase and the superconducting transition temperature was about 15K, but it is difficult to obtain a homogeneous Nb3Al phase by annealing the amorphous powder.
Crystallization Kinetics of Co-Finemet Amorphous Alloys and Magnetic Properties of Nanocrystalline Powder Cores

Abstract:Amorphous Fe73.5-xCoxSi13.5B9Cu1Nb3（x=10,30,50） ribbons were prepared by the single copper wheel melt spinning technique in the air atmosphere.The nanocrystallization kinetics of amorphous ribbons was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry（DSC）.The apparent activation energies of amorphous ribbons were calculated by using Kissinger and Ozawa methods.It was found that the activation energies of the first crystallization reduce and those of the second crystallization rise with increasing Co content.The local Avrami parameter m for primary crystallization was calculated using Johnson-Mehl-Avrami（JMA） model.The values of the Avrami parameter showed that the primary crystallization mechanism of amorphous ribbons varied at different stages.In the initial stage,the crystallization mechanism was bulk crystallization with three dimensional nucleation and grain growth controlled by diffusion.In the following stage,it was surface crystallization with one dimensional nucleation and grain growth at a near zero nucleation rate.The variation of soft magnetic properties of nanocrystalline Fe63.5Co10Si13.5B9Cu1Nb3 powder cores as a function of milling time has been investigated.It was found that the effective permeability of the cores shows high frequency stability and decreases with increasing milling time.The quality factor increases with increasing frequency in the lower frequency range,reaches a maximum at the frequency of 80 kHz,and then decreases gradually with increasing frequency.

Abstract:In this study, structural, morphological, thermal and magnetic properties of amorphous-nanocrystalline Fe 70 Cr 10 Nb 10 B 10 (at.%) alloy are discussed. The formation and evaluation of amorphous-nanocrystalline structures of the alloy were followed by XRD, SEM-EDX, TEM, DTA, and VSM techniques. After 50 h of milling Cr, Nb, and B were completely dissolved into the Fe lattice forming 82% of the amorphous phase of the alloy. A gradual dissolution of the alloying elements also increased the lattice parameters concurrently. The lattice parameters reached a maximum value of 2.908 Å after 20 h of milling and then leveled off to a value of 2.891 Å at the end of 50 h of milling. Based on the XRD data, crystallite size and lattice strain of the alloy were calculated as 3.2 nm and 3.34% respectively. TEM analyses revealed that the alloy particulates comprised needle-shaped nanoparticles of an average size of 21 nm. The room temperature magnetic hysteresis loops showed that the increased duration of milling decreased the saturation magnetization from 91 to 24 emu/g. This was mainly due to the upsurge on the amorphous phase content in the alloy as the milling progressed. The increase in amorphous phase content and the subsequent reduction of the saturation magnetization were due to the inter-diffusion of the non-ferromagnetic Cr and B atoms into the Fe lattice. Thermal studies revealed that around 350 °C the amorphous phase of the alloy began crystallizing. The magnetic saturation of the heat-treated alloy also increased with the growth in the crystalline phases. The 50 h milled sample annealed at 700 °C was found to have the highest magnetic anisotropy as observed from the temperature-dependent zero-field cooled and field cooled magnetization measurements. The high-pressure X-ray diffraction measurements revealed that the amorphous state of the alloy remained stable up to 11.3 MPa. It also revealed the structural similarities of the Fe 70 Cr 10 Nb 10 B 10 alloy with those of the Fe 70 M 10 B 20 (M = Nb and Cr) types. For all practical purposes, the microstructural stability under high compressive pressure represents the consolidation properties of the nanostructured magnetic materials since both pressure and temperature-induced phase transformations are the primary controlling factors for the specific magnetization properties of the alloy.

Abstract:Amorphous ribbons Fe73.5-xCoxSi13.5B9Cu1Nb3(x=10,30,50) were prepared by the standard single copper wheel melt spinning technique in the air atmosphere.The isothermal annealing was carried out at 550 and 600℃ for 1h in a vacuum furnace to induce the formation of nanocrystallite in amorphous ribbons.The X-ray diffraction(XRD) analyses showed that the average sizes D of α-Fe(Co,Si) grains for the samples annealed at 550℃ were 19.3,20.1,22.8 nm and those for the samples annealed at 600℃ were 24.8,25.2,26.5nm,respectively.The primary crystallization activation energies of amorphous ribbons were calculated using Kissinger,Ozawa and Augis-Bennett models based on differential thermal analysis data.The local Avrami exponenet n for primary crystallization was calculated using Johnson-Mehl-Avrami(JMA) equation.The significant variation of local Avrami exponent n with crystallized volume fraction α demonstrated that the primary crystallization kinetics of amorphous ribbons varied at different stages.In the initial stage(0α0.2),the crystallization mechanism was bulk crystallization with three dimensional nucleation and grain growth controlled by diffusion at decreasing nucleation rate.In the following stage(0.2α1.0),it was surface crystallization with one dimensional nucleation and grain growth at a near-zero nucleation rate.

Abstract:In this paper, the effects of milling duration and composition on the microstructure and magnetic properties of equi-atomic FeSiBAlNi and FeSiBAlNiNb high entropy alloys during mechanical alloying have been investigated using X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and alternating gradient magnetometry. The amorphous high entropy alloys have been successfully fabricated using the mechanical alloying method. The results show that the Nb addition prolongs the milling time for the formation of the fully FeSiBAlNi amorphous phase and decreases the glass forming ability. However, FeSiBAlNiNb amorphous high entropy alloy has the higher thermal stability and heat resisting properties. Moreover, the as-milled FeSiBAlNi(Nb) powders are soft-magnetic materials indicated by their low coercivity. The saturation magnetization of the as-milled FeSiBAlNi(Nb) powders decreases with prolonging of the milling time and shows the lowest value when the amorphous high entropy alloys are formed. It suggests that the as-milled products with solid solution phases show the better soft-magnetic properties than those with fully amorphous phases. The Nb addition does not improve the soft-magnetic properties of the FeSiBAlNi high entropy alloys. Rather, both amorphous high entropy alloys have similar soft-magnetic properties after a long milling time.

Abstract:Adoption of powder-in-tube method to fabricate superconducting wire can realize a large application of Nb 3 Al prepared by powder metallurgy. Powder metallurgy was used to synthesize Nb 3 Al under various heat-treatment conditions, annealing temperature was varied from 700 to 1,000 °C and heating time was varied from 10 to 50 h. X-ray diffraction patterns reveal that a reaction between Nb and Al took place and formed NbAl 3 phase. Under current heat-treatment conditions (annealing temperature was varied from 700 to 1,000 °C and heating time was varied from 10 to 50 h), NbAl 3 was so stable that it did not further react with the unreacted Nb and was not sensitive to the heat-treatment condition. By mechanical alloying, adoption of high-energy ball milling significantly decreases particle size and enhances surface free energy, which promotes the formation of Nb 3 Al phase. X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that relatively pure Nb 3 Al phase was obtained under the same heat-treatment condition. Energy-dispersive X-ray analysis measurement demonstrates that the obtained samples were close to the right stoichiometry of A15 structure Nb 3 Al.

Abstract:Amorphous ribbons of the alloy Fe73.5Cu1Nb3−xMoxSi13.5B9 (x=1, 2, 3) were prepared by the standard single copper wheel melt spinning technique in air atmosphere. The isothermal annealing was carried out at 550, 570 and 590°C for 1h in a vacuum furnace to study the effect of annealing temperature on the formation of nanocrystallite in as-spun ribbons. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique was used to analyse the grain size of the crystalline phase in the annealed samples. It was found that for samples annealed at 590°C for 1h, the average grain size increased from 13nm for the sample with x=1 to 16nm for the sample with x=3. The primary crystallization kinetics of amorphous ribbons was analyzed by non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. The crystallization activation energies of amorphous ribbons calculated by using Kissinger model were 347, 297 and 326kJ/mol for x=1, 2 and 3, respectively. The calculated Avrami exponents n were 1.95, 2.14 and 2.00 for x=1, 2 and 3, respectively. The crystallization mechanism for the non-isothermal primary crystallization of the amorphous ribbons was discussed.

Abstract:The structural transformation of polycrystalline Si induced by high energy ball milling has been studied. The structure and property characteristics of the milled powder have been investigated by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, Raman scattering, and infrared absorption spectroscopy. Two phase amorphous and nanocrystalline Si has been produced by ball milling of polycrystalline elemental Si. The nanocrystalline components contain some defects such as dislocations, twins, and stacking faults which are typical of defects existing in conventional coarse-grained polycrystalline materials. The volume fraction of amorphous Si is about 15% while the average size of nanocrystalline grains is about 8 nm. Amorphous elemental Si without combined oxygen can be obtained by ball milling. The distribution of amorphous Si and the size of nanocrystalline Si crystallites is not homogeneous in the milled powder. The amorphous Si formed is concentrated near the surface of milled particles while the grain size of nanocrystalline Si ranges from 3 to 20 nm. Structurally, the amorphous silicon component prepared by ball milling is similar to that obtained by ion implantation or chemical vapor deposition. The amorphous Si formed exhibits a crystallization temperature of about 660 °C at a heating rate of 40 K/min and crystallization activation energy of about 268 kJ/mol. Two possible amorphization mechanisms, i.e., pressure-induced amorphization and crystallite-refinement-induced amorphization, are proposed for the amorphization of Si induced by ball milling.

Evolution from Amorphous to Nanocrystalline and Corresponding Magnetic Properties of Fe-Si-B-Cu-Nb Alloys by Melt Spinning and Spark Plasma Sintering

Abstract:The nanocrystalline Fe-Si-B-Cu-Nb alloys were prepared by firstly melt spinning and then spark plasma sintering process. The microstructure and magnetic properties of the samples obtained were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer. The body-centered cubic alpha-Fe(Si) phase precipitated from the amorphous matrix when the sintering temperature was increased to 800 K. The Fe23B6 phase started to form at the sintering temperature of 950 K. The grain size and densities of the sintered Fe-Si-B-Cu-Nb alloys increased with increasing the sintering temperature. Moreover, the saturation magnetizations of the samples obtained increased first and then decreased as the sintering temperature was increased from 750 K to 1050 K, while the values of coercive force changed in the opposite direction. The Fe-Si-B-Cu-Nb alloys sintered at 900 K exhibited a nanocrystalline structure with a grain size of similar to 34 nm. It also displayed excellent soft magnetic properties with saturation magnetization at 137.5 emu/g, coercivity at 5 Oe and remanence at 1.0 emu/g. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The first bulk homogeneous nanocrystalline Zr60Al15Ni10Co15 (at. %) alloy prepared by melt casting without the amorphous matrix is reported. In this work, the complete grain refinement directly by solidification processing, when qualitatively compared to the previously reported nanocrystallization by postdevitrification of amorphous alloy solid precursors, produces nanograins that have a relatively narrower size range (7.4 nm in average) and are randomly oriented. The total inhomogeneous chemical affinity of the multicomponent alloy was proposed to thermodynamically favor the three-dimensional nanoscale nucleation from alloy melts. Clustering of different atoms in the ZrAlNiCo alloy occurs while the material is still in the molten state. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:The magnetic properties and isothermal crystallization process of amorphous Fe73.5Cu1Nb13.5Si13.5B9 alloy have been investigated by means of the thermogravimetry analysis method (TGA) and X-ray diffraction measurements. The TGA curves for samples annealed at various temperatures indicate three distinct regions corresponding to the different magnetic characteristics of the as-quenched, the nanocrystalline and the polycrystalline structures. The results of a kinetic analysis show that Cu element plays an important role in the nucleation of ultrafine grains. The formation of Cu-rich regions reduces the activation energy for the nucleation of alpha-Fe(Si), so that the alpha-Fe(Si) phase can nucleate and precipitate preferentially in the Cu-rich regions. A comparison with isothermal DSC analysis shows that more information about nucleation at the early stage of crystallization can be obtained by the TGA method.

Abstract:This work aims to synthesize the alloy Co 62 Nb 32 B 6 through a wet-route mechanical alloying using a planetary ball mill. A disc rotation per minute and a ball/powder weight ratio of 350 rpm and 20:1 were used, with a grinding time of 15 h, respectively. The characterization of the Co 62 Nb 32 B 6 alloy was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), examined by scanning electron microscope-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDS), thermoanalytical techniques (TGA/DTA), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and confirmed by the BET method type IV isotherms with a hysteresis loop for mesoporous materials. The results indicated the evolution of the amorphous phase in the Co 62 Nb 32 B 6 composition through the mechanical alloying process and exhibited good soft magnetic properties with the addition of the B metalloid element and their excellent unique ferromagnetic properties. Through thermoanalytical analysis (TGA/DTA), it was shown that at higher temperatures, oxidation with a significant increase in mass gain of 19.69% at 865 °C, probably due to the contribution of B in the evolution stability thermal and magnetic in the amorphous phase, respectively. This suggests that the newly developed high-performance amorphous alloy Co 62 Nb 32 B 6 has great application potential.

Nanocrystalline/Amorphous Tuning of Al–Fe–Nb (Mn) Alloy Powders Produced via High-Energy Ball Milling

Abstract:The demand for advanced Al-based alloys with tailored structural and magnetic properties has intensified for applications requiring a high thermal stability and performance under challenging conditions. This study investigated the phase evolution, magnetic properties, thermal stability, and microstructural changes in the Al-based alloys Al82Fe16Nb2 and Al82Fe14Nb2Mn2, synthesized via mechanical alloying (MA), using stearic acid as a process control agent. The X-ray diffraction results indicated that Al82Fe16Nb2 achieved a β-phase solid solution with 13–14 nm crystallite sizes after 5 h of milling, reaching an amorphous state after 10 h. In contrast, Al82Fe14Nb2Mn2 formed a partially amorphous structure within 10 h, with enhanced stability with additional milling. Magnetic measurements indicated that both alloys possessed soft magnetic behavior under shorter milling times (1–5 h) and transitioned to hard magnetic behavior as amorphization progressed. This phenomenon was associated with a decrease in saturation magnetization (Ms) and an increase in coercivity (Hc) due to structural disorder and residual stresses. Thermal stability analyses on 10 h milled samples conducted via differential scanning calorimetry showed exothermic peaks between 300 and 800 °C, corresponding to phase transformations upon heating. Post-annealing analyses at 550 °C demonstrated the presence of phases including Al, β-phase solid solutions, Al13Fe4, and residual amorphous regions. At 600 °C, the Al3Nb phase emerged as the β-phase, and the amorphous content decreased, while annealing at 700 °C fully decomposed the amorphous phases into stable crystalline forms. Microstructural analyses demonstrated a consistent reduction in and homogenization of particle sizes, with particles decreasing to 1–3 μm in diameter after 10 h. Altogether, these findings highlight MA's effectiveness in tuning the microstructure and magnetic properties of Al–Fe–Nb (Mn) alloys, making these materials suitable for applications requiring a high thermal stability and tailored magnetic responses.

Alloying In An Immiscible Cu-Nb System Upon Solid-State Reaction

Abstract:In an immiscible Cu-Nb system, an amorphous alloy and two metastable crystalline phases were obtained by solid-state reaction of Cu-Nb multilayered films, and the formation of the alloy phases was found to be quite sensitive to the average composition of the films. At Nb concentration of 75at%, amorphization was achieved by 250��C annealing for 50 min, while in the films with compositions of 70 and 80 at% Nb, a simple cubic (a=0.405��0.005nm) and an orthorhombic phase (a=0.421, b=0.334, c=0.291��0.005 nm) were observed, respectively. Thermodynamic calculation was conducted for the Nb-Cu alloy phases and the energetic state of the multilayers, which consisted of 9 Cu/Nb bilayers. It turned out that the excess free energy originating from the interfacial atoms could raise the multilayers to an energy level being higher than that of the amorphous or/and metastable crystalline phases both with a convex shape, and thus provided a major driving force for alloy phase formation in such immiscible system.

Abstract:Iron-based amorphous alloys have attracted significant attention from both technological and scientific communities owing to their soft magnetic property. A recent discovery indicates that amorphous alloys have a transition to the nanocrystalline state after annealing, which exhibiting excellent magnetic properties. To explore how the annealing temperature and alloy composition affect the formation of nanocrystals in the Fe-based amorphous alloys, this study employs molecular dynamics simulations. The first step involves creating amorphous models with varying alloy compositions. Subsequently, annealing processes are simulated for amorphous alloys of two different compositions across a range of temperature conditions. Finally, various characterization techniques, including radial distribution function, Honeycutt-Andersen (HA) bonding index, and Voronoi polyhedral index, are used to analyze the resulting amorphous structures. The results show that the Fe78Si15B7 amorphous alloy has a higher tendency to adopt the standard icosahedral structure compared to the Fe74Cu1Nb3Si15B7 amorphous alloy. Moreover, the percentage of icosahedral formation during annealing exhibit a nonlinear relationship with temperature. This suggests that the Fe78Si15B7 amorphous alloy is more predisposed to forming nanocrystals. Additionally, the proportions of both icosahedral and standard icosahedral structures within the amorphous material increase as annealing time is extended.
