Abstract:The precise control of the thermal splicing temperature of ZBLAN fiber and silica fiber was guaranteed by theoretical simulation, analysis, and experimental optimization. The thermal splicing model was established, and optimized thermal splicing parameters were obtained based on the simulation results. The thermal splicing parameters were finely repeatedly tuned and optimized further in the thermal splicing experiments according to simulation parameters. The achieved loss was measured to be about 0.3 dB in the thermal splice experiments. The offset thermal splicing method demonstrated a repeatable, low-loss, and promising technique for the splice of ZBLAN fiber to silica fiber. Abstract:Temperature is the main factor restricting the application of all-fiber current sensors. To comprehensively analyze temperature influences, the influences of temperature on Verdet constant, birefringence, and phase delay of the quarter-wave plate are modeled and simulated by the Jones matrix and Matlab. Basing on the normalized scale coefficient, the relationship between the normalized ratio coefficient and temperature is discussed. Finally, we get the conclusion that the normalized proportional coefficient of feedback phase shift fluctuates on both sides of the reference temperature. Keeping the temperature in a narrow range is a practical scheme to improve the system performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we theoretically analyze the wavelength temperature stability of multifunctional integrated optical chips (MIOCs) applied on fiber optic gyroscopes (FOGs). This study is critical for improving the temperature stability of the FOG scale factor, which is a significant parameter used to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of FOGs. Analytical and multiphysics simulations uncover two significant new predictions. First, changes in environmental temperature can lead to misalignment of the coupling structure between the chip and fiber, which is the main reason for the deterioration of the MIOC wavelength temperature stability. Second, misalignment caused by temperature changes is related to the initial alignment parameters of the coupling structure. Therefore, we can effectively improve the wavelength temperature stability of an MIOC by correctly choosing the initial alignment state of the coupling structure. Space coupling experiments are also presented to verify these predictions, and the experimental and simulation results are in good agreement.

Abstract:Bending losses of nanofibers or nanowires with circular 90 degrees bends are simulated using a three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD) method. Dependences of bending losses on wavelength and polarization of guided light are investigated, as well as the diameters, refractive indices, and bending radii of nanowires. The acceptable bending losses (approximately 1 dB/90 degrees) predicted in glass, polymer, and semiconductor nanowires with bending radii down to micrometer level may offer valuable references for assembling highly compact photonic integrated circuits or devices with optical nanowires.

Abstract:This paper proposes a high strength and low loss splicing method suitable for coupling between hollow-core photonic crystal fiber and single mode fiber, based on filament fusion technology. The essence of this method is keeping the temperature of the single mode fiber above the melting temperature, and that of the hollow-core photonic crystal fiber at around the softening point temperature by modifying several splice parameters, which can be pre-evaluated by numerical simulation. Experimental results have verified the accuracy of the numerical model, and ideal splicing results can be made under proper splice parameters. In this paper, repeatable splicing between hollow-core photonic crystal fiber and single mode fiber with a loss of less than 2.3 dB, and a strength higher than 38 Kpsi is demonstrated.

Abstract:Optical fiber composite low voltage cable (OPLC) is an optimal way of connecting the smart grid with the load. In this paper, the field distribution of temperature and stress is simulated by applying the finite element method. At the overload condition, the fiber unit's temperature rises to 59°C that generates the strain of 387 µε. This strain and temperature together result in the additional attenuation of 0.053 dB/km in the optical fiber. Temperature and strain are termed as the major contributing factors towards the attenuation in the optical fiber as temperature caused 16.03% while strain caused 80.56% of the total loss.

Abstract:When optical fiber is deployed in practical engineering, bending and stretching of fiber optics is inevitable, which will affect optical communication. The fiber losses of different bending radii are simulated by COMSOL software. In order to verify the accuracy of simulation results, an experiment was designed to measure the losses of single-mode fiber under different bending radii and tension forces. The results show that the sensitive bending diameter of fiber loss is between 5 mm and 10 mm. The tensile effect has little influence on the fiber loss, but when the tensile force is greater than 160 N, the fiber breaks. This study provides an important reference for fiber layout in practical engineering.

Abstract:Optimization is getting over all the aspects of the world. In Power systems, the smart grids are taking place of the traditional grids. The main aspect of the smart grid is the two-way communication between the power grid and consumer. Optical fiber composite low voltage cable (OPLC) is a smart way to combine the electricity transmission with optical communication. In this paper temperature rise in the OPLC cable and its effect on the optical unit is being analyzed. We make a setup and experimentally analyze the effect of temperature rise on the optical fiber used in OPLC cable to measure the attenuation loss at different temperatures from 0 °C to 100 °C. The current flow in the conductors causes the temperature rise resulting in stress on an optical unit that displaces the cladding layer. The experimental platform is being set to analyze the micro-bending effect due to the displacement of optical fiber layers. The results that are obtained, get to the conclusion that in the normal operating condition of OPLC, the temperature rise and stress on the optical fiber will not cause any sufficient attenuation loss in optical communication.
Numerical study on the internal stress of optical fiber connector in the aerospace wide temperature range

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of fiber break failure of optical fiber connector used in aerospace wide temperature range environment, the finite element simulation model is established based on the mature optical fiber contact structure. The influence of some typical factors, such as expansion coefficient of fiber adhesive, filling amount of adhesive, and material of metal tailstock, on the internal stress of optical fiber contact parts is analyzed quantitatively at extreme temperature of +100℃ and -100℃. It is found that the axial force exerted on the fiber by the metal tailstock and ceramic ferrule due to high and low temperature expansion and contraction is the main source of the internal stress. The junction area of ceramic ferrule cone and straight section is the most prone to fiber breakage. The difference between the maximum axial internal stress of optical fiber at +100℃ and -100℃ is regarded as the index to evaluate the internal stress of optical fiber. The metal tailstock with low expansion coefficient can significantly reduce the internal stress of optical fiber. Compared with aluminum alloy tailstock, the maximum stress difference of Kovar alloy tailstock can be reduced by 51.5%. The internal stress of optical fiber can be reduced to a certain extent by appropriately reducing the filling amount of optical fiber adhesive between ceramic core and metal tailstock and the expansion coefficient of optical fiber adhesive. The results show that the maximum stress difference can be reduced by 11.4% if only the conical region is filled. When the thermal expansion coefficient of optical fiber adhesive decreases from 60e-6/℃ to 30e-6/℃, the maximum stress difference declines by 8.9%. This paper can provide a reference for improving the design of optical fiber connector for aerospace wide temperature range.

Abstract:Optical fiber composite low voltage cable (OPLC) is an optimized way of carrying out the function of supplying electrical power and communication signals in a single cable. In this paper, the temperature and stress distribution in OPLC cable is analyzed by using the finite element method as the current increases to maximum capacity. The increase of temperature and stress are the two main factors that affect the additional attenuation in optical fiber. This additional attenuation can be reduced by selecting the optimal heat resistant layer for the optical unit that limits the increase of temperature and stress at the optical fiber. The analysis is carried out for three different kinds of materials by using the finite element method FEM and among them, thermoplastic elastomer TPE is chosen as a heat resistant layer as it restricts the temperature and stress at rated current of 92 A to the minimum values of 69°C and 7.90 × 107 N/m2 respectively. The OPLC cable with TPE as a heat resistant material for the optical unit is put in the experimental setup to analyze the temperature and stress increase inside the cable in real-time using the BOTDA analyzer at normal and under overload condition and compared with the simulation results to verify the correct selection of optimal heat resistant layer for optical unit.

Abstract:Optical Fiber Composite Low voltage Cable (OPLC) is a composite of insulated conductors and the optical unit. While the cable is in the operating condition, the electric current has effects on the temperature of every part, which influences the fiber attenuation by the changing strain of the optical fibers in the optical unit. In this paper, four methods of optimizing the OPLC structure to decrease the effect of the electrothermal are proposed. After the optimization, the temperature of the optical fiber decreases, leading to less fiber attenuation caused by the strain which is related to the temperature. All the optimizing methods make optical fibers in the optical unit of the OPLC operate under a better situation.

Abstract:This paper presents numerical investigation of stress distribution within fiber optic taper during its drawing process. A thermoviscoelastic model is proposed to describe the glass mechanical behavior from solid to liquid in a broad temperature range where the fiber optic taper drawing undergoes. The model is validated by experiments and used to study stress distribution in the fiber optic taper during fabrication. Roles of key parameters are discussed including geometrical configuration of the furnace, temperature difference between heating and cooling regions and drawing speed. Results show that the stress distribution is mainly influenced by thermal environment surrounding the taper. While the afore-mentioned key parameters all affect the thermal environ-ment, they thus also change the stress distribution in the fiber optic taper. A shorter length of adiabatic region and smaller temperature difference between the heating region and cooling region make the impact of cooling region on thermal environment to fiber drawing more significantly. Conversely, a longer adiabatic region and a larger temperature difference will enhance the impact of heating region. Proper increase in drawing speed can promote heat transfer arising from rheologic motion, thus improving the homogeneity of stress distribution in the fiber taper. Based on the understanding derived from this study, an improved heating and drawing design is proposed to achieve more homogeneity of stress in fiber optic taper during the drawing process.

Abstract:Microstructured polymer optical fibers (mPOF) have many unique and promising characters compared with traditional polymer optical fibers, such as the infinite single-mode guidance, the photonic band-gap effect and the unique nonlinearities, which can offer promising opportunities in optical communication system and optical sensor field. The mechanism of photonic bandgap effect of the one dimension photonic crystal model was explained. And then the Optiwave FDTD 4.0 software was used to simulate the mPOF' transmission field, which can be achieved by calculating the transmittance of light propagating through mPOF transverse section. Three types of mPOF models were designed in this paper, after which the relationship between transmission windows and the structure of mPOF was deduced by means of simulation and calculation. The results may be helpful to the following research of the mPOF.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of the stress and the displacement of the fiber embedded in the flexible optoelectronic substrate can change, which affects the coupling efficiency of the optical path and the effective refractive index of the fiber which can result in the transmission performance to change under lamination process, he finite element method software was adopted to conduct coupling analysis of stress modules, heat transfer and electromagnetic field of fiber embedded flexible substrate. Simulation results show that the maximum stress of the fiber embedded in the trapezoidal groove flexible optoelectronic substrate was 68.336 7 MPa. The fiber displacement embedded in trapezoidal groove is 1.430 4 mu m largest among the three types grooves. The maximum stress of the fiber increases from 52.667 MPa to 71.907 MPa with the increasing of groove width. The maximum stress of the fiber increased from 51.589 MPa to 53.567 MPa as groove spacing increases. The maximum fiber stress decreases from 52.667 MPa to 47.793 8 MPa firstly and then increases to 67.349 6 MPa with the increase of groove depth. With the increase of temperature and pressure, the effective refractive index of single-mode fiber in the X direction increased from 1.446 249 977 to 1.446 259 084 and increased from 1.446 326 398 to 1.446 393 041 in the Y direction. The difference of effective refractive index increases with the increas of temperature and decreases as the pressure increases. With the effective refractive index increases, the fiber core's ability to limit light energy increases which can better reduce the radiation of light energy and the bending loss of the fiber. The research conclusion has certain reference value and guiding significance for designing the embedded structure of flexible optoelectronic printed circuit boards.

Abstract:Expertise of packaging for optoelectronic components requires the solution of optical, mechanical, and electrical problems in the same way. The purpose of this paper is to present three-dimensional simulations using finite-element method (FEM) of thermomechanical stresses and strains in 1550-nm laser modules induced by Nd:YAG crystal laser welds and thermal cycles on main subassembly laser submount. Nonlinear FEM computations, taking into account of experimental sigma(epsiv) measured curves, show that the laser welding process can induce high level of strains in columns of the laser platform, bearing the laser diode, responsible of an optical axis shift and a gradual drop of the optical power in relation with relaxation of accumulated stresses in the subassembly (W. M. Sherry et al., ldquoHigh performance optoelectronic packaging for 2.5 and 10 Gb/s laser modules,rdquo in Proc. Electron. Compon. Technol. Conf., 1996, pp. 620-627). Typical stresses are close to 160 MPa with drift about 5 MPa with the dispersion of energy level of the laser Nd: YAG beam. The introduction of both material and process dispersion in order to evaluate their impact on product lifetime distribution has been taking into account. In the case of thermal cycles, stresses can occur on elements sensitive to coefficient of thermal expansion mismatches such as solder joints between the laser platform and thermoelectric cooler and as fiber glued into the pigtail leading to crack propagation with sudden drop of optical power. A previous paper demonstrated that laser submount is the most sensitive part of optical system (Deshayes, et al., ldquoThree-dimensional FEM simulations of thermal mechanical stresses in 1.55 mum laser modules,rdquo Microelectron. Rel., vol. 43, no. 7, pp. 1125 -1136, Jul. 2003). Experimental analyses were also conducted to correlate simulation results and monitor the output optical power of laser modules after 500 thermal cycles ( -40degC/ + 85degC VRT).

Abstract:For the first time, we derive an analytical form of the thermal-induced strain equation for the waveguide core layer in an optical planar waveguide, which is based on the elastic interaction theory in multilayered isotropic structures off the edges by thin-film approximation. This derived equation addresses how material and structural characteristics affect the magnitude and the distribution of the strain. By this equation, the strain-induced birefringence can be reduced or eliminated by proper waveguide design.

Abstract:Thermal strain significantly affects stability of fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) performance. This study investigates thermal strain development in a lightweight carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) FOG under thermal vacuum condition simulating space environment. First, we measure thermal strain distribution along an optical fiber in a CFRP FOG using a Brillouin-based high-spatial resolution system. The key strain profile is clarified and the strain development is simulated using finite element analysis (FEA) to understand the mechanism of the strain development. Several materials for FOG bobbins are then quantitatively compared using experimentally validated FEA from the aspect of the thermal strain and the weight to illustrate the clear advantage of CFRP. Finally, a hybrid concept combining low thermal conductivity polyacrylonitrile-based (PAN-based) CFRP and high stiffness pitch-based CFRP is proposed to minimize the thermal strain with minimal weight.

Abstract:As the data-rate of the optical fiber communication system evolves to 400 Gb/s or even 1 Tb/s, higher requirements are put forward for transmission rate and repeater distance. To meet the requirements, further decreasing the optical fiber attenuation coefficient is one of the effective methods. In this paper, we did research on the relationship between the distribution of elements and frozen-in stress in the core layer and the cladding. Subsequently, their effect on optical fiber attenuation is also investigated. The results show that the co-doping of germanium, fluorine, and chlorine in the core layer can improve the stress matching between the core layer and the optical cladding. In addition, based on our research, the outer cladding with a high softening point can restrain the stress mismatch between the core layer and the optical cladding. Furthermore, the thickness of the second cladding will also affect the stress mismatch. Eventually, ultra-low loss fibers with the optimal attenuation of 0.156 dB/km at 1550 nm were prepared successfully by analyzing the stress distribution inside the optical fiber and adjusting the doping amount of germanium, fluorine, chlorine and other elements in the core layer, optical cladding, and outer cladding to maintain that the core layer and the optical cladding share the same stress.

Abstract:Strain transfer analysis is an important means of assessing the measurement accuracy of embedded or surfacebonded fiber-optic sensors; however, the effect of complex strain fields in substrates has not been well elucidated. Here, a theoretical model was proposed for the analysis of strain transfer mechanisms in surface-bonded distributed fiber-optic sensors due to linear strain gradients. Closed-form solutions were obtained for both single linear and bilinear strain distributions, which were validated through controlled laboratory testing. Highresolution strain profiles acquired with optical frequency-domain reflectometry allowed also the establishment of a simple approach for determining the strain transfer coefficient at the turning point of a bilinear-type strain. Moreover, parametric analyses were conducted to investigate the influences of geometric and mechanical properties of protective and adhesive layers on the strain transfer efficiency, shedding light on the design, installation, and measurement accuracy improvement of fiber-optic sensors after accounting for the effect of substrate strain patterns.
