Abstract:Temperature is the main factor restricting the application of all-fiber current sensors. To comprehensively analyze temperature influences, the influences of temperature on Verdet constant, birefringence, and phase delay of the quarter-wave plate are modeled and simulated by the Jones matrix and Matlab. Basing on the normalized scale coefficient, the relationship between the normalized ratio coefficient and temperature is discussed. Finally, we get the conclusion that the normalized proportional coefficient of feedback phase shift fluctuates on both sides of the reference temperature. Keeping the temperature in a narrow range is a practical scheme to improve the system performance.

Abstract:For the purpose of improving precision and practicability of Fiber Optic Gyroscope, the thermal fabrication of SLD module was analyzed and a detailed description of the all-digital control system had been carried out. The testing result indicated that in a temperature range of -15°C to 55°C, it restrained the temperature fluctuating of SLD. This technology yielded a much better stability of SLD's wavelength 0.014% and output power 0.4%, which conduced to a much better performance of FOG.

Abstract:In order to prevent the major accidents caused by ice coating on optical fiber composite overhead ground wire (OPGW) in extremely cold weather in power system, this paper uses Brillouin optical time domain reflectometry (BOTDR) and the finite element software to establish a tight buffered OPGW cable ice monitoring model. Firstly, establishing the linear model of Brillouin frequency shift, the temperature and strain, the article eliminates the effect of temperature changes on Brillouin frequency shift and get the precise relationship between the strain of the fiber in the OPGW cable and the Brrillouin frequency shift. Secondly, using ANSYS Workbench software to model and simulate, the relationship between the ice thickness of OPGW cable and the strain of the fiber is obtained. Finally, the relationship between the thickness of the OPGW cable ice-coating and the Brillouin frequency shift in the fiber is achieved. The results show that the model can be combined with BOTDR technology to know the ice-coating status of OPGW cable. This model lays the foundation for real-time monitoring of OPGW cable ice-coating conditions.

Abstract:In order to obtain more precise icing thickness distribution within a span, a special icing monitoring technique for tight tube Optical Fiber Composite Overhead Ground Wire(OPGW)is proposed and preliminary verified by experiments. This method utilizes the distributed strain sensing capability of Brillouin optical time domain reflectometer. The strain distribution of OPGW was obtained by measurement, and then the weight distribution was derived based on mechanical analysis method. the specific icing thickness distribution was obtained via the conversion between weight and icing thickness. In the simulation with a suspended optical cable,the errors of the experimental results are 2.27% and 15.77% for two uniform loadings of 5 kg and 2.5 kg,which preliminarily verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method. The error analysis shows that the effect of the proposed method is better for longer span range in practice,because it allows longer spatial resolution which can improve the strain measurement accuracy.

Abstract:Abstract The icing of transmission lines can cause many problems such as increased line load, unbalanced tension, and galloping, posing a serious threat to the reliable operation of the power system. Therefore, linear modeling analysis of the heat balance under a high-frequency critical ice melting state of transmission lines is studied. The thermal conduction states of melting, heating, twisting, rotating melting, and ice layer detachment of ice melting conductors are analyzed. Based on the heat conduction process of thermal melting of ice on transmission lines, a simplified calculation formula for thermal melting ice time is derived to calculate times for heating, ice layer torsion, and air gap increase. At the same time, based on the law of conservation of energy, thermodynamic boundary conditions for iced conductors were established and corresponding physical models were constructed. Based on this model, we conduct a linear modeling of the heat balance in the melting state in order to provide a more accurate prediction of temperature distribution. The experimental results show that there is a negative correlation between environmental temperature and critical melting current, and the melting time decreases with the increase of environmental temperature.

Abstract:Icing on overhead power transmission line is a serious problem that affects the secure operation of power system. This paper firstly analyses transmission line icing damage and the advantage & disadvantage of various current online monitoring techniques. Then, the implementation scheme of a novel method, which based on the sensor network of fiber optic sensor, is introduced. Through measuring the stress of the transmission line, the ice cover can be obtained. In order to prove the correct of this method, a emulation experiment, which compares the calculation result of the ANSYS software with the method brought out in this paper, is presented in detail. The ice cover calculation is proposed and achieved by monitoring the stress of transmission line, and verified by ANSYS FEM software.

Abstract:In this paper,an analysis of the internal heat source of fiber optic coil is carried out according to the temperature interference in the practical application and a mathematical model of the fiber coil with changeable temperature is built.Temperature experiments of the fiber optic coil within range from -40℃ to +60℃ are designed and completed,and the difference of the temperature between inside and outside the fiber coil is analyzed to determine the factor of the compensation model.The output of fiber optic gyroscope is compensated over the full temperature range.Experiments show that the bias stability can be doubled through the organic combination of the thermal design and the temperature compensation,and the long-term stability and accuracy can be ensured.

Abstract:Transmission-line icing presents a serious threat to the safe operation of power systems. Therefore, the icing condition of overhead transmission lines must be accurately calculated for online monitoring and prewarning systems. Based on the icing data obtained at Xuefeng Mountain Natural Icing Stations (XMNIS), the cross-sectional shape of glaze icing on conductors was studied, and the correction coefficient of the actual nonuniform ice was proposed to provide an accurate and convenient method for field icing measurement. In addition, by analyzing the characteristics of the tension and tilt of the insulator string at the iced tangent tower, a new mechanical calculation model considering the ice and wind loads was established. One-month field observations and experiments were conducted in XMNIS, and it is shown that the calculation results have good agreement with experiment results, which suggests that the model can be used for ice thickness calculation and online monitoring on transmission lines.

Abstract:Transmission lines icing is destructive to the operation of the power grid. There is a lack of methods to monitor overhead transmission line conductors and insulators for icing load simultaneously. In this paper, we implanted six optical fibers with three quasi-distributed FBGs each into the interface of a 110 kV composite insulator and built an icing detection system, and proposed three ways for measuring overhead transmission lines icing load. A method for quasi-distributed FBG to differentiate between the measurement of running insulator umbrella and conductor icing load was proposed and validated. The effect of the number of implanted optical fibers on the measurement accuracy was studied. The results show that the relative error of simulated insulator umbrella skirt icing load measurement is 7.32.7. The 200 m-span running conductor insulator umbrella skirt icing load measurement relative error is 11.53.8; the relative error of conductor ice measurement is 16.59.0 and absolute error is 0.831.5 mm. The composite insulator with an optical fiber embedded can accurately warn of serious icing on the conductor, with two can achieve the conductor icing measuring absolute error of about 1 mm. As for accurately measuring both the umbrella skirt and the conductor icing, it is necessary to implant six optical fibers.

Abstract:Progressive ice shedding (PIS) along transmission lines is a common type of ice shedding during thermal de-icing that requires investigation to ensure the security of transmission lines. In current research, PIS is commonly analyzed using a constant speed for ice detaching from the conductor, which is not accurate for PIS simulation. Therefore, a mechanical model of PIS is established in this study to analyze PIS during thermal de-icing. First, an ice detachment model during thermal de-icing is built to determine the detachment times of the initial ice and remaining ice. Then, a two-node isoparametric truss element is employed to derive the static and dynamic equilibrium equations of an iced conductor to simulate the dynamic response of PIS. Relative to commercial software, these equations can easily accommodate the changing mass of ice with the flow of melted water. The dynamic equilibrium equations are then solved using the ice detachment model to obtain the dynamic response of PIS. Finally, small-scale and full-scale experimental results are employed to verify the proposed method. The simulation results show that the results of the proposed method are more consistent with the experimental results than are the results of existing methods that assume a constant propagation speed. The proposed method can be further applied to optimize transmission line designs and evaluate the application of thermal de-icing devices.

Abstract:The temperature of OPLC will rise rapidly under a short circuit condition,which has significant im-pact on safety and stability of the power grid. Material,structure and work environment are three key factors affecting the thermal property of optical cable;an optimized constituent material and structure choosing accord-ing to the work environment of OPLC will lead to an improved thermal property. According to the steady state and the short-circuit state analysis of OPLC,simulation model is established utilizing COMSOL to study the in-fluence factors on thermal property of OPLC,which include conductor material,insulating material,structure and wind speed;the result presents:1)the location of optical fiber cable in OPLC has significant effect on thermal behavior of itself;2)the impacts of different conductor materials (copper and aluminum,respective-ly)on OPLC′s thermal property are the same,while situation is much different for insulating materials;3) wind speed variation influences both the steady state temperature and the time to reach the steady state of OPLC.

Abstract:Optical fiber composite overhead ground wire (OPGW), which consists of ground wire and communication function, has been widely used in transmission lines. Its running state is directly related to the security of power grid communication. In reality, the main environmental factors leading to OPGW malfunction include icing, mountain fire, wind vibration, etc., especially lightning stroke. In this paper, an OPGW temperature monitoring method based on Weak Fiber Bragg Grating (WFBG) array is proposed. By monitoring the temperature change caused by lightning stroke, the lightning stroke level identification and lightning stroke location are realized. The test results show that the minimum lightning discharge identification can reach to 9 C and the lightning location resolution is better than 0.1 m. Compared with other lightning temperature monitoring methods, lightning grade identification and positioning accuracy can be improved by this method, and it has the advantages of high real-time FBG, which provides a new approach for lightning monitoring of OPGW.

Abstract:Both practices and experiments have shown that the thermal conductivity of icing has an obvious influence on ice-melting process, but it is ignored by most of the existing models which set the simulation parameter as a constant. In this paper, an experimental study is conducted to investigate the thermal conductivity for overhead transmission line icing. Based on the test data in artificial icing laboratory, a quadratic equation of thermal conductivity and icing density is presented. And then, the equation of icing thermal conductivity is employed to simulate the critical ice-melting current and ice-melting time. The results of the experiment and simulation show that the thermal conductivity can improve the prediction accuracy in thermal de-icing projects, with the mean error of 4% and 14%, respectively.
Transition of Optical Fiber Delay Coefficient under the Action of Fiber Coating at Low Temperature

Abstract:This paper shares a conjecture that in a specific low temperature region, the fiber delay coefficient with temperature exists a transition process. In the specific low temperature region, the soft and hard state of the optical fiber coating changes with temperature, which affects the strain effect of the coating on fiber core. At normal temperature, the soft inner coating layer has no strain on fiber core, while at ultra-low temperature, the inner plastic coating becomes frozen and hard. The frozen coating exerts strain on fiber core, resulting in additional length change and the increase of fiber delay coefficient. According to the theoretical analysis and experimental data, this paper briefly introduces the sources and main influencing factors of optical fiber delay, emphatically analyzes the influence of optical fiber coating on fiber delay coefficient in a specific low temperature region, and gives the possible explanation of the action of coating on fiber delay coefficient.

Abstract:The formation of ice on electrical transmission lines poses an increasingly substantial safety hazard. In this study, a two-dimensional transmission line icing model was established to predict the shape of the icing. The airflow field and convective heat transfer were calculated using Fluent software, and a discrete phase model (DPM) based on the Lagrange method was used to calculate the water droplet collection coefficient on the surface of the transmission line. The Messinger thermodynamic model was programmed using the user-defined function (UDF) of Fluent, and the icing shape and icing thickness on the surface were calculated. The effects of wind speed, median volume diameter (MVD) of water droplets, temperature, liquid water content, wind direction angle, and electric field intensity on the icing characteristics of transmission lines were considered. The forced vibration of the transmission line was simulated using the UDF, and its influence on icing characteristics was thoroughly analyzed. Furthermore, the influence law of the vibration amplitude and frequency on the local water drop collection coefficient and ice shape was determined. The results elucidate the effects of the aforementioned parameters on transmission line icing. These findings provide a reference for future efforts to mitigate the impact of transmission line icing. Compared with other studies, this study has considered the influencing factors more fully, predicted the ice shape under different conditions more comprehensively, and can be more pertinently applied to different regions with different meteorological conditions.

Abstract:In the flexible DC transmission system, the internal discharge of the optical fiber insulator may be caused by the mismatch of the characteristics between the materials. The conductivity of the outer coating layer varies significantly with temperature, which leads to a particularly serious problem of mismatched conductivity at the optical fiber. In this paper, the outer coating layer was modified by adding nano-AlsOa particles to reduce the conductivity temperature coefficient. The surface potential decay was used to analyze the trap change after the modification of the outer coating layer. The high temperature and high field conductivity test was used to analyze the change of conductivity temperature coefficient after the modification of the outer coating layer. The differential scanning calorimeter was used to analyze the change of glass transition temperature after the modification of the outer coating layer. The results showed that after the incorporation of nano-alumina particles, the deep traps increase, the conductivity temperature coefficient decreases, and the glass transition temperature increases. The conductivity mismatch problem at the fiber surface is reduced.
Temperature Field Distribution of Optical Fiber Composite Low-Voltage Cable

Abstract:Smart grid distribution network consist of power supply cables and two-way communication between the customer and grid which is carried out by Optical Fiber Composite Low-Voltage Cable (OPLC). The concept of OPLC is to merge the power distribution and communication access network together so that one cable can connect the customers to the smart grid through a smart meter, to create an interactive environment with a smart grid for better implementation of demand side management, the internet and scheduling the load in peak hours. The Optical Fiber Composite Low-Voltage Cable (OPLC) is modeled in COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software. A 3-dimensional model is designed for four core and three core cable. The operational current analysis of OPLC is performed in this paper as well as the increased temperature test is carried out in different cases. The geometrical structure of the OPLC contains the external reference diameter of the conductor is 8.0 mm while the thickness of the conductor insulation and cable insulation is 1.1 mm and 2.5mm respectively. A distribution system of OPLC cable is modeled in which the temperature is analyzed for different conditions in the normal situation. The current flow from the conductor will cause the temperature rise in the conductor due to resistive losses and the generated heat will be transferred to the other insulating material used in the cable. The simulation was performed for a long time of 20 hours and analyzed the maximum temperature gain by the conductors. In conclusion, the results obtained by the four core and three core OPLC cable are compared and suggested the performance based good cable.
Numerical Simulation Model of Electrothermal De-Icing Process on Composite Substrate

Abstract:A numerical simulation model of electrothermal de-icing process on carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite is conducted to study the effect of thermal properties of the substrate on the ice melting process. A novel melting model which is based on the enthalpy-porosity method is applied to study the transient ice melting process and heat transfer of the de-icing sys-tem. Multi-layered electrothermal de-icing systems including composites with different fiber orientation are used to analyze the effects of orthotropic heat conductivity of the CFRP composite on the ice melting process and heat transfer. Movement of the ice-water interface, the melted zone thickness and the melted zone area on CFRP composite are investigated on the three-dimensional electrothermal de-icing unit. The effects of thermal properties of substrate on the temperature distribution of the ice-airfoil interface are analyzed. The computational results show that the thermal properties of substrates affect the temperature on the ice-airfoil interface, the temperature distribution in the substrate, ice melting area, ice melting rate and ice melting volume significantly. The time that ice starts to melt on the CFRP composite substrate is earlier than that on the metal substrate. However, it takes more time for the ice to melt completely on the ice-CFRP interface than that on the ice-metal inter-face. The orthotropic heat conductivity of CFRP composite results in strong directivity of the melting area on the ice-CFRP in-terface. A ratio parameter is defined to represent the matching degree of substrate materials and geometry model of de-icing system. The simulation model can be applied to study electrothermal de-icing system of nacelle inlet and airfoil made of composite. The results in present work is also helpful to predict the change of temperature during de-icing process and provide guidelines for the optimizing the electrothermal de-icing system to reduce power consumption according to the fiber structure of composite.
Analysis of Ice-melting Process for Aerial Conductor

Abstract:Ice-freezing has the negative influence on the electric transmission and transformation equipments of southern power grid in China. Considering the effects of heat convection, radiation heat transfer, gravity and detachment of water droplet from the wire surface, a short circuit ice-melting CFD model is set up in this paper. The ice-melting processes under different current intensity were simulated. The results show that, the unit time consuming and whole process time consuming did not decrease linearly with the linear grow of current intensity. The unit time consuming at the end of the ice melting process is the largest, and the same trend is more obvious in the lower current intensity ice-melting process.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, transmission line icing disasters occur frequently, which poses a great threat to the operation of power grid. Most of the existing studies do not consider the impact of time-varying meteorological conditions on conductor icing. In order to effectively predict the growth of line icing, it provides an important reference for transmission line deicing and galloping early warning. The wind tunnel model of the transmission line is established by using the computational fluid dynamics simulation software, and the air flow field distribution around the transmission line is calculated by using the hybrid grid division. By establishing the motion equation of cooling water droplets in the air and analyzing the motion trajectory of water droplets, the local collision coefficient between water droplets and the transmission line is obtained, and the icing surface of the transmission line is discretized into a control body, Through the establishment of thermodynamic model, the mass balance and energy balance equations are established to calculate the icing quality of transmission line. According to the environmental temperature, wind speed, transmission line diameter and other factors, the quantitative influence degree of different factors on the icing form of transmission line is output, so as to provide technical support for the safe and stable operation of important transmission channels.
