Abstract:Alumina ceramics were directly bonded for high-temperature applications by epitaxial growth of aluminum borate whiskers in air. The Al2O3/whisker/Al2O3 joints were characterized via scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The microstructural observations showed that the Al18B4O33 whiskers along the [001] crystallographic direction grew across the seam and thereby achieving the joining of alumina substrates. Both of whiskers diameter and density of joints increased with the increase of bonding temperatures. Three-point bending results showed that the maximum strength of the joints tested at 800°C was 27MPa. The possible mechanism of the bonding process was discussed as well.

Abstract:In this study, aluminum borate whiskers were prepared on the zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) substrates for the first time. This result was achieved by calcining a mixture of B2O3 powders with and without adding the MnO2 flux in air. The morphologies of as-prepared whiskers were carefully characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The length-diameter ratio of whiskers prepared by adding MnO2 flux is larger than those prepared by using only B2O3 powders, and the growth mechanisms of whiskers follow solid-liquid-solid theory. In addition, aluminum borate whiskers were successfully used to join ZTA ceramics. By adding the MnO2 flux in the interlayer, the strength of the joints can be significantly improved. The highest flexural strength for the ZTA/whiskers/ZTA joints bonded using B2O3 + 5 wt% MnO2 powders reached 162 +/- 11 MPa at 1100 degrees C after holding for 4 h.

Abstract:A sol–gel process followed by annealing was employed to fabricate single crystal aluminium borate (Al4B2O9 and Al18B4O33) nanowires. The diameter of Al4B2O9 nanowires synthesized at 750°C annealing is ranging from 7 to 17nm, and that of Al18B4O33 nanowires synthesized at 1050°C annealing is about 38nm. Instead of the well-known vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) mechanism, self-catalytic mechanism was used to explain the growth of the nanowires.

Abstract:Alumina was successfully joined to itself in air environment by B2O3 + Al2O3 powder mixture as the interlayer to synthesize aluminum borate whiskers in the joint. The microstructure evolution was analyzed by means of scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). The possible mechanism of microstructure evolution was also discussed. The effects of parameters such as heating cycles and temperature on the microstructure as well as the 3‐point flexural strength of the joint were investigated. It was found that heating the specimen for several heating cycles instead of holding at a constant temperature for a long time can eliminate the voids among the whiskers to achieve a dense microstructure, and the phenomenon that higher temperatures can accelerate the reaction was also observed. The highest strength of the joint reaches 90.29MPa with the heating temperature of 800°C after four heating cycles.

Abstract:Bonding between polycrystal alumina and sapphire with (0001), (10 (1) over bar0), (11 (2) over bar0), (1 (1) over bar 02) orientations is successfully achieved by growing aluminium borate whiskers in the joint. The morphology of the whiskers in the joint is characterised by (Scanning Electron Microscopy) SEM. The relationship between the growing direction of the aluminium borate whiskers and the orientation of the sapphire substrate is investigated. The effect of the growing direction of the aluminium borate whiskers on the mechanical properties of the joint is discussed. The results show that the whiskers on the sapphire with (10 (1) over bar0) orientation grow perpendicular to the surface of the substrate while the whiskers show a random growth on the other substrates. It is found that there is an orientation relationship between the whiskers (220) and sapphire (10 (1) over bar0) and the morphology of the whiskers has great influence on the mechanical properties of the joint. The joint between polycrystal alumina and sapphire with (10 (1) over bar0) orientation exhibits the highest strength, which reaches 26 MPa.

Abstract:Porous ceramic with a framework structure of aluminum borate (9Al2O3·2B2O3) whiskers was in situ synthesized by firing above 1150°C a green powder compact of a mixture of aluminum hydroxide, boric acid and an additive of nickel oxide. During sintering, the whiskers of aluminum borate grew in situ in the compact, and were bonded together. The porous aluminum borate consisted solely of whiskers with a porosity of 54–58%. The average diameters of the whiskers increased from 0.2 to 2μm with increasing sintering temperature from 1150 to 1350°C. However, the estimated whiskers aspect ratio decreased with increasing sintering temperature.

Abstract:Topographical microstructures were fabricated on alumina by epitaxial growth of Al4B2O9 whiskers in air. The products were characterized via scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The whiskers were found to grow along the [0 0 1] crystallographic direction, and the lattice mismatch between Al2O3 and Al4B2O9 was determined to be 0.03%. The wetting of the Al4B2O9-whisker-coated surfaces by Ag-36.7Cu-8.0Ti at.% alloy was studied. The time needed to reach the equilibrium stage reduced as the temperature increased, and the final contact angle for liquid alloy on the rough surface was 27 degrees at 880 degrees C. The wetting dynamics of the whiskers coated surfaces was investigated. After wetting, a whisker-interconnected region was formed between alumina and the alloy. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:There exist serious interfacial reactions in squeeze-casting aluminum borate whisker reinforced 6061Al composites. To control the spinel reactions a sol–gel coating method was used to deposit γ-Al2O3 and α-Al2O3 ceramic coatings on aluminum borate whiskers. TEM observations of coating morphology indicate that nanostructured alumina coatings are uniformly deposited on whisker surfaces, with a thickness of about 30–50 nm. Ball-milling has an important effect on final mechanical properties of the composites. γ-Al2O3 and α-Al2O3 coatings were found to be effective in controlling the interfacial reactions, by completely preventing the diffusion of magnesium from matrix/coating interface to coating/whisker interface.

Abstract:A novel B2O3-Al2O3-SiO2 (BAS) glass filler was first developed to join Al2O3 and zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) ceramics. The microstructure, crystallization products, and interfacial reaction layer of the joint were all studied. Detailed growth process and the microstructural evolution mechanism of aluminum borate (Al18B4O33 and Al4B2O9) crystal whiskers were revealed through controlling the joining temperature and the holding time. The results showed that the Al18B4O33 and Al4B2O9 whiskers formed at the interfaces and in the joining seam, owing to the reaction between the substrates and the BAS glass system, and the precipitation out of the glass, respectively. Finally, bonded with this BAS glass filler at 1400 degrees C for one hour, the joints exhibited a maximum shear strength of 42 MPa at room temperature and good mechanical performance after thermal cycling.

The sol-gel γ-Al 2 O 3 coating was a nanocrystalline material with an average grain size of 5 nm.

Abstract:In the present paper a sol-gel γ-Al2O3 coating method was employed to modify the interface properties of the aluminum borate whisker reinforced 6061Al composites. Results indicate that an alumina coating with a thickness of about 40 nm can be obtained on the aluminum borate whiskers. And due to the nearly continuous brittle spinel product by aluminum borate whisker and the matrix, the structure continuity of the whiskers has been greatly destroyed after the squeeze-casting process. Although γ-Al2O3 coating can't totally hinder the interfacial reaction, it effectively constrains the spinel reaction and preserves the structure integrity of the aluminum borate whisker.

Abstract:For fabrication of aluminium borate whisker (Al18B4O33(w)) reinforced 6061 aluminium alloy composites, a sol-gel alumina binder instead of conventional silica binder was used for preparing the whisker preforms of the squeeze cast composites. The results show that a sound whisker preform and a uniform composite can be made by this method. Unlike the reactive silica binder, the sol-gel alumina binder is rather stable throughout the entire high temperature fabrication process. Under appropriate conditions, the sol-gel alumina binder can also serve as a thermal barrier for minimising interfacial reactions between aluminium borate whiskers and the matrix alloy. With a binder concentration of 0.6 mol L-1, the ultimate tensile strength of the composite is as high as 277.6 MPa at room temperature and moderate at elevated temperatures. The tensile fracture of the alumina bound composite shows a mixed mode of dimple fracture and interface debonding. (C) 2001 IoM Communications Ltd.

Abstract:We put forward a novel strategy for joining zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) ceramics using whiskers reinforced borosilicate glasses for high-temperature (HT) applications. Herein, the robust joining of ZTA ceramics by using B2O3-Al2O3-SiO2 (BAS) glasses as an interlayer was achieved in air at 1400 degrees C. The Al18B4O33 whiskers were generated in the joining seam during the joining process, thus strongly improving the HT strength. The flexural strength of the joint after the thermal cycle test at 1200 degrees C could still reach 84 % of that at room temperature (RT). The joining mechanism was mainly addressed from the perspective of the in-situ growth of whiskers.

Abstract:To satisfy the ever-increasing demand for aluminum borate porous ceramics with complex shapes and tunable pore structures in a diverse set of fields, aluminum borate whisker-based lattices with hierarchical pore structures were fabricated by a combination of in situ reaction and digital light processing three-dimensional (3D) printing. The optimal dispersant concentration and exposure parameters for 3D printing were determined based on analyses of the rheological properties and working curves of the Al2O3–B2O3 photosensitive slurries. The effects of the B2O3/Al2O3 molar ratio on the morphology and properties of aluminum borate lattices were investigated. The results showed that the addition of an excess of B2O3 was beneficial to the growth of aluminum borate whiskers. When the B2O3/Al2O3 molar ratio was set to 6:9, the resultant aluminum borate lattices exhibited a typical hierarchical pore structure, including inherent large pores in the lattices and small pores formed by interlocked aluminum borate whiskers generated in situ within the struts. This unique hierarchical pore structure endowed the ceramic lattices with a high compressive strength (1.18 MPa) and porosity (82.58%), as well as non-brittle fracture characteristics. Owing to these outstanding properties, aluminum borate whisker-based lattices are promising candidates for high-temperature thermal insulation, catalyst supports, acoustic absorption, and particle filtration.

Abstract:The preparation process of nano-aluminum hydroxide sol by peptizing aluminum hydroxide precipitate produced via carbonation of sodium aluminate was investigated. The reaction, in which the sodium aluminate solution was dropwise added into abundant sodium bicarbonate solution, was analyzed. The XRD results indicated that the amorphous aluminum hydroxide precipitates transformed into pseudo-boehmite because the precipitates dissolved and recrystallized into pseudo-boehmite crystals during the sol preparation. Furthermore, the increase of absorption at 270 run in the UV spectra indicated the presence of Al(OH)(6)(3-) ion during the sodium aluminate solution with caustic ratio of 1.7 was neutralized to 1.3. Comparing with the absorption spectrum of the structure of six hydroxyl groups around Al atom, it could be concluded that the coordination numbers of Al atom with hydroxyl groups changed from four to six during the decomposition of sodium aluminate solution. Besides, the morphology of particles in the sol was also influenced by surfactants and acids used.

Abstract:Zinc nitrate and citric acid were used to prepare ZnO sol. ZnO and ZnAl2O4 coated aluminum borate whiskers were separately prepared by a sol–gel process. The results show that ZnO forms when ZnO xerogel is calcined at 500 °C and it does not undergo any phase transformation in the range of 500 and 1000 °C during calcinations. In ZnO xerogel coated aluminum borate whiskers system, a large amount of heat, gas and pores are produced during the heating process. When ZnO xerogel coated aluminum borate whiskers are calcined at 500 °C, ZnO can be uniformly coated on the surface of the whikers and the coated whiskers can be easily dispersed in distilled water through an ultrasonic vibration apparatus. During the calcination of ZnO coated whiskers at 1000 °C, ZnO reacts with the whiskers and ZnAl2O4 forms on the surface of aluminum borate whiskers.

Abstract:Bare α-alumina ceramics were directly bonded together in air through ultrasonic-assisted joining by pure aluminum filler within seconds. It was found that rapid wetting through in-situ reaction of elemental aluminum and oxygen, undercutting of the melted aluminum on ceramic surfaces, and large scale growth of fresh nano-sized alumina particles probably combined successively during the joining, attributing to the acoustic cavitation, the streaming and the micro-jetting by ultrasound effects. Ceramic-composed joints were successfully obtained with fracture strength of 101.5MPa within 90s at as low as 973K.

Abstract:Sol–gel γ-Al2O3 and α-Al2O3 ceramic coatings were deposited onto surfaces of aluminum borate whiskers to control the spinel reactions between whiskers and matrix alloys. Interface observations, tensile experiments and hardness measurements of the composites were conducted to evaluate the coating effect.By comparison with γ-Al2O3 coating, the α-Al2O3 coating was found to be more effective in controlling the interfacial reactions, and it helped to enhance the elastic modulus of the composite. The introduction of alumina coatings to the composite postponed the peak-aging process, due to a smaller depletion of magnesium in the matrix of the coated composites.

Abstract:Bismuth glass, 50Bi(2)O(3) -40B(2)O(3) -10ZnO, was designed, prepared and employed to join polycrystalline alumina with 95 wt.% purity (95Al(2)O(3)) in air. Crystallization behavior of the glass was studied. The results showed that Bi4B2O9 and Bi24B2O39 were formed in the glass in the heating process. The glass transition temperature (T-g) and the softening temperature (T-f) were 385 and 419 degrees C, respectively. Prior to the joining process, the wettability of the glass on the ceramic was studied. The wetting angle of the glass/95Al(2)O(3) system at 700 and 750 degrees C was 26.6 degrees and 12.6 degrees, respectively, exhibiting excellent wetting performance. Joining parameters influencing microstructure and mechanical property of the joint was researched, showing the in-situ formation of Bi4B2O9, Bi24B2O39 and ZnAl2O4 crystals in the joints when brazed at 600, 625 and >= 635 degrees C, respectively. The joint microstructure evolved considerably with temperature increasing (T >= 635 degrees C): (i)ZnAl2O4 particles grew steadily (ii) the aggregation of ZnAl2O4 particles was more and more serious, as well as the infiltration of the glass melt into the 95Al(2)O(3). The joint shear strength was proved to be a function of temperature, optimized average value of 58 MPa was acquired when the joints were joined at 625 degrees C.
