Abstract:An iterative procedure for optimizing the NH3-based carbon capture process was designed. Based on the rate-based model, process optimization of CO2 capture by aqueous ammonia was performed. The object of this process is one million tonnes of CO2 captured annually at a capture efficiency of 90%. Thus, 31.45% of the total flue gas from a typical 500 MW coal-fired power plant was drawn into this CO2 capture system. Three parameters, namely α (the ratio of the CO2 absorption rate to the mass flow rate of the lean solvent), β (the ratio of the CO2 absorption rate to the packed volume of the absorber), and γ (the ratio of the CO2 output to the packed volume of the stripper) were defined for considering the operating and construction costs. Effects of liquid gas ratio, boilup ratio, and column sizes on this process were investigated, and these parameters were optimized. The optimal condition can achieve the object of this process, and its low regeneration energy shows a good prospect of CO2 capture by aqueous ammonia.
