Abstract:A multi-mode interference double wavelength optical power splitter was studied. The device can be used to divide beam for both 1.30 μm and 1.55 μm at the same time. The guided-mode propagation analysis method was used to analyze the working principle of MMI double wavelength optical power splitter. On the basis of predefined waveguide parameters, insertion loss and imbalance of this device were also analyzed. The optimum width and wavelength of the multimode waveguide are 28 μm and 2735 μm respectively. The two insertion losses are 0.59 dB, 0.41 dB and power uniformities are 0.16 dB, 0.15 dB, respectively.

Abstract:Multimode Interference (MMI) based devices are widely used due to excellent performance. Here in this paper, a 1x2 multimode power splitter based on MMI is designed using three-dimensional beam propagation method (3D-BPM), and then fabricated in glass using the Ag+-Na+ ion-exchange technique. The width of the input and output multimode waveguides was 50 mu m and they were tapered to 75 mu m at the interface to the MMI region. The MMI region was also quadratically tapered. First, Ag+-Na+ ion exchange was run in nitrate melt at 350 degrees C. Then an electric field was applied at 300 degrees C so that the silver ions continued their migration award. Under the wavelength of 1550nm, the measured results showed that the propagation loss of multimode straight waveguide can be lower than 0.31dB/cm, and the insertion loss and uniformity of the splitter were 4.28dB and 0.21dB, respectively. Parameters of the fabrication process and structure of the device can be optimized to improve the performance of the device.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate two types of 1 × 2 power splitters based on multimode interference (MMI), which are ultra-compact, fabrication friendly, and low loss. The contours of MMI and output tapers are optimized with Bezier curves, which can implement arbitrary ratio power splitters (ARPSs) and ultra-broadband dual-polarization power splitters (UDPSs). For ARPSs, the experimental results show that arbitrary power splitting ratios can be obtained with an average excess loss (EL) of 0.17 dB at 1550 nm for fundamental TE polarization. For UDPSs, the experimental results show that the ELs for fundamental TE and TM polarization are less than 0.63 dB and 0.44 dB over a large bandwidth of 415 nm (1260–1675 nm). The footprints of the proposed devices are less than 10 µm × 2.5 µm (without input straight waveguide) with large fabrication tolerance.

Abstract:Improved approach to low-loss and high-uniformity multimode interference (MMI) devices is proposed in this paper. An optimized index contrast is selected to decrease the propagation constant errors of modes near cutoff in the MMI region. 1×N MMI splitters are analyzed by exact mode analysis. Results show that the loss and uniformity of this new structure are notably improved, especially when N is large. The loss of 0.0892 and uniformity of 0.0826 are acquired when N=32. A formulating approach for device-design is presented and it is suitable for all types of MMI couplers.

Abstract:Free choice of splitting ratio is one of the main properties of a power splitter required in integrated photonics, but conventional multimode interference (MMI) power splitters can only obtain a few discrete ratios. This Letter presents both numerical and experimental results of an arbitrary-ratio 1 x 2 MMI power splitter, which is constructed by simply breaking the symmetry of the multimode region. In the new device, the power splitting ratio can be adjusted continuously from 100:0 to 50:50, while the dimension of the multimode section stays in the range of 1.5 x (1.8-2.8) mu m. The experimental data also indicate that the proposed arbitrary-ratio splitter keeps the original advantages of MMI devices, such as low excess loss, weak wavelength dependence, and large fabrication tolerance. Abstract:A 1×8 GaAs/GaAlAs optical power splitter based on a MultiMode Interference (MMI) coupler was presented. The input and output single mode waveguides were optimized by the Discrete Spectral Index Method (DSIM) and a moderate square spot on the output in deep-etched rib waveguides was obtained. The fabrication tolerance was analyzed by using the Finite Difference Beam Propagation Method (FDBPM). The device was fabricated by using the dry etching technique and the near-field output obtained. The device shows polarization-insensitive, large fabrication tolerance, low theoretical excess loss and low power imbalance.

Abstract:We designed and demonstrated TE-mode arbitrary power splitters based on adiabatic mode evolution. The power splitters are designed with a footprint of smaller than 12 × 2.9 μm2, fabricated on a 400-nm silicon-on-insulator platform, requiring only a single etch step. The optimization process and the conditions for arbitrary-power splitting are performed using three-dimensional-FDTD simulations. We prove this concept through the fabrication of asymmetrical adiabatic evolution-based power splitters with splitting ratios of 50:50, 60:40, and 70:30. The fabricated devices are shown to agree closely with simulation results. Broadband operation with low insertion loss of 0.11–0.6 dB is demonstrated across the 3.66–3.89 μm wavelength range (230 nm). This component has applications in a multitude of areas such as spectroscopic optical sensing and optical phased arrays photonic integrated circuits etc.

Abstract:We design and experimentally demonstrate a dual-mode 3 dB power splitter based on the self-imaging effect in a taper-assisted multimode interference (MMI) coupler. The quality reduction of the two mirrored half-power images of the input field due to accumulated high-order eigenmodes phase error will degrade the performance of dual-mode power splitter. We propose an eigenmode-selective-excitation method to suppress the excitation of high-order eigenmodes in the MMI. By optimizing the geometric parameters and injection position of the input taper waveguide, we realize power ratios of 95.9 % and 94.2 % for the lowest three and five eigenmodes when input TE0 and TE1 modes, respectively. The fabricated device occupies a footprint of 5 mu m x 86.5 mu m with 5.2 mu m assisted tapers. The measured excess losses and crosstalks for both modes are less than 0.76 dB and -20.5 dB, on average, over the observable 60 nm bandwidth, respectively, which are consistent with the numerical simulations.

Abstract:A detailed analysis of mode characteristics in self-image effect(SIE) multimode rib waveguide was presented by using discrete spectral index method.According distribution of mode propagation deviation,it can be introduced some small length increment of the SIE multimode waveguide to compensate phase error from mode propagation.Using above procedures,We designed a low self-imaging loss,high uniformity,and polarization-insensitive multimode interference(MMI) optical power splitters with deep-etched SIE multimode waveguide structure.The results show that for 1×16 MMI optical power splitter,the self-imaging loss and uniformity are 0.045 1 dB and 0.030 9 dB for TE mode operation,and 0.045 5 dB and 0.031 1 dB for TM mode operation respectively.

Abstract:A design of a 1 × 2 multimode 3 dB optical power splitter using tapered couplers is proposed and investigated in this paper. As an example, a 1 × 2 splitter processing five-lowest order transverse-electric-polarized modes is designed and optimized by utilizing finite difference time domain method and particle swarm optimization algorithm. To verify the feasibility of this novel design, the optimized device is fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The coupling lengths of tapered couplers are respectively 6.5 µm, 6.0 µm, 3.5 µm, 5.0 µm, 5.0 µm, 7.5 µm, 6.0 µm, 5.0 µm, and 8.0 µm. Measurement results reveal that, for the fabricated splitter, the power uniformity varies from 0.041 to 0.88 dB, the crosstalk ranges from -23.96 to -14.12 dB, and the insertion loss changes from 0.089 to 1.50 dB within a bandwidth from 1520 to 1600 nm.

Abstract:Mode-division multiplexing (MDM) has been considered as a low-cost and high-density means for high-bandwidth on-chip optical communications in a high-performance computer and a data center. However, simultaneously controlling the power of multiple modes in the MDM systems is difficult due to the complex mode coupling for high-order modes (HOMs). Here we propose a novel schematic structure of variable-ratio mode-insensitive 1 × 2 power splitter, which is based on multimode interference (MMI) couplers cascaded with phase shifters. We theoretically reveal the phase shifting relations between the fundamental mode and the HOMs for the phase shifter formed by two unequal-width waveguides. Then, the operating principles for the proposed structure are presented. Numerical simulations are carried out and it is found that the structure has the ability to realize variable-ratio dual-mode mode-insensitive 1 × 2 power splitter by designing the number and lengths of the phase shifters, which shows a good agreement with our theoretical analysis. The structural parameters of the MMI couplers and the phase shifters are optimized to minimize the transmittance losses and the differences of mode power splitting ratio. The simulation results also show that the optimized power splitters have the advantages of high tolerance to fabrication errors and wide operating bandwidths, which indicates that the proposed structure can operate on multiple modes and would be suited to potential applications in on-chip optical communications.

Abstract:A 1×16 multimode interference (MMI) optical power splitter which allows for connecting with the standard single-mode fiber arrays for optical communication directly is designed and fabricated. The input and output single-mode waveguides are optimized by the discrete spectral index method (DSIM). Single-mode rib waveguide with low theoretical propagation loss (-0.028 dB) and with rib width of 3 μm and rib height of 2.9 μm is obtained. Analysis shows that the deep-etched MMI optical power splitter has large fabrication tolerance, big bandwidth and insensitive-polarization. The measurement results show that the function of 1 to 16 uniform splitting has been realized in the device.

Abstract:We calculate the guided modes in SIE region of the MMI optical splitter by numerical calculation. We prove that the insertion loss and output uniformity of weak guided structure are better than that of the strong confinement, which means that we can fabricate MMI optical splitter using wet etching. That decreases the cost of device and at the same time improves the device function.

Abstract:We numerically demonstrated 1 x N multimode interference (MMI) splitters based on dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides (DLSPPW). The dependences of real part of effective index, propagation length and lateral mode profiles of the waveguides on the geometrical parameters are analyzed in detail. The transmission efficiency of the MMI splitter is as much as 60%, with their splitting length being in the range of several micrometers. The performance of the device is found in agreement with results predicted by theoretical MMI self-imaging theory. Such MMI splitter is important for implementation of high density photonic integration and lab-on-a-chip applications.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a high-performance asymmetrical multimode interference splitter on X-cut lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) with an ultra-compact size of 5.8 μm × (26.4–35.6) μm. A rectangle with a small region is removed from the upper left corner of the multimode interference (MMI) coupler to achieve a variable splitting ratio. Here, we design and characterize MMIs in six different distribution ratios ranging from 50:50 to 95:5 on a 600 nm thick LNOI. Based on the cascade structure, the linear fitting method accurately shows the device loss (~0.1–0.9 dB). Our fabricated devices demonstrate robustness across a 30 nm optical bandwidth (1535–1565 nm). In addition, we numerically simulate the Z-cut LNOI, showing that the structure corresponding to the TM mode can also achieve a good variable splitting ratio.
