Abstract:We demonstrate a fiber-based femtosecond laser source, which can deliver 37 MHz, similar to 100 fs laser pulses tunable from 920 nm to 1030 nm with up to 10 nJ pulse energy. Pumped by an ultrafast Yb-doped fiber laser, a short piece of tapered photonic crystal fiber with lower dispersion was used to generate self-phase-modulation filtered for the tunable pulses. We believe that this new type of high-energy ultrafast fiber laser source can be an ideal solution for the two-photon fluorescence microscopy applications.

Abstract:A tapered silica photonic crystal fiber was designed and fabricated to generate more than one octave spanning supercontinuum (from 550 nm to 1400 nm at -30 dB level), by an input pulse of 40 fs 200 pJ directly from an Yb:fiber ring laser. The low pulse energy spectrum broadening are favorable to generate the high contrast f ceo signals with low noise. The f ceo signal with 40 dB signal-to-noise ratio was detected, which helps to build a compact real-world frequency comb.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a new approach to implement a wavelength-tunable ultrafast fiber laser source suitable for multiphoton microscopy. We employ fiber-optic nonlinearities to broaden a narrowband optical spectrum generated by an Yb-fiber laser system and then use optical bandpass filters to select the leftmost or rightmost spectral lobes from the broadened spectrum. Detailed numerical modeling shows that self-phase modulation dominates the spectral broadening, self-steepening tends to blue shift the broadened spectrum, and stimulated Raman scattering is minimal. We also find that optical wave breaking caused by fiber dispersion slows down the shift of the leftmost/rightmost spectral lobes and therefore limits the wavelength tuning range of the filtered spectra. We show both numerically and experimentally that shortening the fiber used for spectral broadening while increasing the input pulse energy can overcome this dispersion-induced limitation; as a result, the filtered spectral lobes have higher power, constituting a powerful and practical approach for energy scaling the resulting femtosecond sources. We use two commercially available photonic crystal fibers to verify the simulation results. More specific, use of 20-mm fiber NL-1050-ZERO-2 enables us to implement an Yb-fiber laser based ultrafast source, delivering femtosecond (70-120 fs) pulses tunable from 825 nm to 1210 nm with > 1 nJ pulse energy. Abstract:We have demonstrated widely tunable Yb:fiber-based laser sources, aiming to replace Ti:sapphire lasers for the nJ-level ultrafast applications, especially for the uses of nonlinear light microscopy. We investigated the influence of different input parameters to obtain an expansive spectral broadening, enabled by self-phase modulation and further reshaped by self-steepening, in the normal dispersion regime before the fiber damage. We also discussed the compressibility and intensity fluctuations of the demonstrated pulses, to reach the transform-limited duration with a very low intensity noise. Most importantly, we have demonstrated clear two-photon fluorescence images from UV-absorbing fluorophores to deep red dye stains.

Abstract:The Yb:fiber based high-power and high-energy ultrafast lasers usually feature central wavelength of 1030 nm instead of the more common one of 1064 nm, thus limiting some potential wavelength-dependent applications. In this work, a hectowatt 1064-nm femtosecond chirped pulse amplification (CPA) system based on double-stage rod-type photonic crystal fiber (PCF) amplifier was demonstrated, with a pulse energy of 212-μJ and a repetition rate of 0.5 MHz. Compared with our previous work [Opt. Express 30(6), 3611, 2022], two key measures were employed. Firstly, a Yb:YAG crystal was intentionally introduced as a spectral filter for avoiding 1030-nm amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) oscillation, which hence improved the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by 15 dB. Secondly, an additional stage of rod-type PCF amplifier was adopted for further power scaling, achieving an average power of 127 W. Finally, the pulse was compressed to ∼460 fs, with an average power of 106 W and a compression efficiency of ∼83%. The beam quality factors (M2) were measured to be M2 X = 1.12 and M2 Y = 1.09. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest pulse energy among 1064-nm hectowatt-level femtosecond lasers, thus providing a high-quality source for wavelength-dependent applications. For example, it can be used as a driver for high-repetition-rate vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) sources about 10.5 eV, with an expected conversion efficiency of up to 1%.

Abstract:Widely wavelength-tunable femtosecond light sources in a compact, robust footprint play a central role in many prolific research fields and technologies, including medical diagnostics, biophotonics, and metrology. Fiber lasers are on the verge in the development of such sources, yet widespan spectral tunability of femtosecond pulses remains a pivotal challenge. Dispersive wave generation, also known as Cherenkov radiation, offers untapped potentials to serve these demands. In this work, the concept of quasi-phase matching for multi-order dispersive wave formation with record-high spectral fidelity and femtosecond durations is exploited in selected, partially conventionally unreachable spectral regions. Versatile patterned sputtering is utilized to realize height-modulated high-index nano-films on exposed fiber cores to alter fiber dispersion to an unprecedented degree through spatially localized, induced resonances. Nonlinear optical experiments and simulations, as well as phase-mismatching considerations based on an effective dispersion, confirm the conversion process and reveal unique emission features, such as almost power-independent wavelength stability and femtosecond duration. This resonance-empowered approach is applicable to both fiber and on-chip photonic systems and paves the way to instrumentalize dispersive wave generation as a unique tool for efficient, coherent femtosecond multi-frequency conversion for applications in areas such as bioanalytics, life science, quantum technology, or metrology.

Abstract:We report on a single-stage, high-repetition photonic crystal fiber amplifier working at 1030 nm seeded by a femtosecond fiber laser, which generates an output with average power of 2.23 W at a repetition rate of 49.5 MHz and a 3 dB spectral width of 5 nm, corresponding to a pulse energy of 45.2 nJ. After amplification, the spectrum of the femtosecond laser is broadened. A home-made, ytterbium-doped, double-clad photonic crystal fiber fabricated by laser sintering technology combined with a solution doping method with a core diameter of only 24 μm is used as the power amplifier medium. The spectral characteristics as well as the suppression of amplified spontaneous emission are discussed in detail. Experiment confirms that the amplified spontaneous emission becomes negligible with increasing incident seed power and no obvious nonlinear effects arise in this experiment. These results can provide motivation for the application of ytterbium-doped photonic crystal fiber and can provide a potential application for the high-power, all-fiber laser in the future.

Abstract:We demonstrate a wavelength tunable, Q-switched Er-doped fiber laser using a mixture of gold nanorods and nanospheres as a saturable absorber. The laser has a very low Q-switched threshold pump power of 22 mW, and at a pump power of 47.86 mW, a pulse with a maximum pulse energy of 36.01 nJ, repetition rate of 37.50 kHz, and pulse width of 2.74 mu s was obtained. In addition, by using a tapered fiber as a variable attenuator (ATT), the central wavelength of the laser could be tuned continuously from 1560.97 to 1554.74 nm. The experimental results further verify that a tapered fiber ATT possesses potential advantages for applications in stable, wavelength tunable, all-fiber laser systems.

Abstract:We report a 790–1000 nm tunable femtosecond laser source by second harmonic generation (SHG) of a 1580–2000 nm soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) fiber laser. The SSFS fiber laser with an all polarization-maintaining fiber configuration consists of passively mode-locked figure-9 Er-doped fiber oscillator, two-stage fiber amplifiers and a nonlinear fiber, delivering femtosecond Raman solitons in a tunable range of 1580 to 2016 nm. The tunable Raman solitons are further injected into a specifically-designed chirped periodically-poled lithium niobite (CPPLN) crystal for efficient SHG, and therefore femtosecond pulses with wide wavelength tuning from 790 to 1000 nm are obtained. The shortest pulse duration is < 100 fs at 890 nm, and the average power is 7.55 mW with a repetition rate of 44.9 MHz. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first demonstration of a < 1000 nm broadband tunable fiber-based femtosecond source almost covering the whole short-wavelength near-infrared spectrum, which may have important applications in the nonlinear microscopy, biomedical imaging, and material processing.

Abstract:An experimental study of supercontinuum generation in a photonic crystal fiber with zero dispersion wavelength 780?nm by femtosecond laser and its dependence factor is presented. Supercontinuum light with a spectrum more than one octave broad (500-1100?nm) was generated in a photonic crystalfiber by femtosecond pulses from a selfstarting, selfmode locked Ti:sapphire oscillator running at center wavelength of 810-840?nm. Different supercontinuums were generated by the 35?fs pulses with different power, central wavelength, prechirp, and the continuous noise in the femtosecond pulses. Some reasonable analysis result is obtained from the comparisons of the experimental results, and the mechanism of the supercontinuum generation is analyzed.
