Abstract:We demonstrate a fiber-based femtosecond laser source, which can deliver 37 MHz, similar to 100 fs laser pulses tunable from 920 nm to 1030 nm with up to 10 nJ pulse energy. Pumped by an ultrafast Yb-doped fiber laser, a short piece of tapered photonic crystal fiber with lower dispersion was used to generate self-phase-modulation filtered for the tunable pulses. We believe that this new type of high-energy ultrafast fiber laser source can be an ideal solution for the two-photon fluorescence microscopy applications.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a new approach to implement a wavelength-tunable ultrafast fiber laser source suitable for multiphoton microscopy. We employ fiber-optic nonlinearities to broaden a narrowband optical spectrum generated by an Yb-fiber laser system and then use optical bandpass filters to select the leftmost or rightmost spectral lobes from the broadened spectrum. Detailed numerical modeling shows that self-phase modulation dominates the spectral broadening, self-steepening tends to blue shift the broadened spectrum, and stimulated Raman scattering is minimal. We also find that optical wave breaking caused by fiber dispersion slows down the shift of the leftmost/rightmost spectral lobes and therefore limits the wavelength tuning range of the filtered spectra. We show both numerically and experimentally that shortening the fiber used for spectral broadening while increasing the input pulse energy can overcome this dispersion-induced limitation; as a result, the filtered spectral lobes have higher power, constituting a powerful and practical approach for energy scaling the resulting femtosecond sources. We use two commercially available photonic crystal fibers to verify the simulation results. More specific, use of 20-mm fiber NL-1050-ZERO-2 enables us to implement an Yb-fiber laser based ultrafast source, delivering femtosecond (70-120 fs) pulses tunable from 825 nm to 1210 nm with > 1 nJ pulse energy. Abstract:We have demonstrated widely tunable Yb:fiber-based laser sources, aiming to replace Ti:sapphire lasers for the nJ-level ultrafast applications, especially for the uses of nonlinear light microscopy. We investigated the influence of different input parameters to obtain an expansive spectral broadening, enabled by self-phase modulation and further reshaped by self-steepening, in the normal dispersion regime before the fiber damage. We also discussed the compressibility and intensity fluctuations of the demonstrated pulses, to reach the transform-limited duration with a very low intensity noise. Most importantly, we have demonstrated clear two-photon fluorescence images from UV-absorbing fluorophores to deep red dye stains.

Abstract:Compact and high-energy femtosecond fiber lasers operating around 900-950 nm are desirable for multiphoton microscopy. Here, we demonstrate a >40 nJ, sub-100 fs, wavelengthtunable ultrafast laser system based on chirped pulse amplification (CPA) in thulium-doped fiber and second-harmonic generation (SHG) technology. Through effective control of the nonlinear effect in the CPA process, we have obtained 92-fs pulses at 1903 nm with an average power of 0.89W and a pulse energy of 81 nJ. By frequency doubling, 95-fs pulses at 954 nm with an average power of 0.46 W and a pulse energy of 42 nJ have been generated. In addition, our system can also achieve tunable wavelength from 932 nm to 962 nm (frequency doubled from 1863 nm to 1919 nm). A pulse width of similar to 100 fs and sufficient pulse energy are ensured over the entire tuning range. Finally, we applied the laser in a two-photon microscope and obtained superior imaging results. Due to a relatively low repetition rate (similar to 10 MHz), similar imaging quality can be achieved at significantly reduced average power compared with a commercial 80MHz laser system. At the same time, the lower average power is helpful in limiting the thermal load to the samples. It is believed that such a setup, with its well-balanced optical characteristics and compact footprint, provides an ideal source for two-photon microscopy. Abstract:An exciting recent development for deep-tissue imaging with cellular resolution is three-photon fluorescence microscopy (3PM) with excitation at long wavelengths (1300 and 1700 nm). In the last few years, long-wavelength 3PM has driven rapid progress in deep-tissue imaging beyond the depth limit of two-photon microscopy, with impacts in neuroscience, immunology, and cancer biology. However, wide adoption of 3PM faces challenges. Three-photon excitation (3PE) is naturally weaker than two-photon excitation, which places a premium on ultrashort pulses with high peak power. The inefficiency, complexity, and cost of current sources of these pulses present major barriers to the use of 3PM in typical biomedical research labs. Here, we describe a fiber-based source of femtosecond pulses with multi-megawatt peak power, tunable from 850 nm to 1700 nm. Compressed pulses from a fiber amplifier at 1030~nm are launched into an antiresonant hollow-core fiber filled with argon. By varying only the gas pressure, pulses with hundreds of nanojoules of energy and sub-100 fs duration are obtained at wavelengths between 850 and 1700 nm. This approach is a new route to an efficient, robust, and potentially low-cost source for multiphoton deep-tissue imaging. In particular, 960-nJ and 50-fs pulses are generated at 1300 nm with a conversion efficiency of 10\%. The nearly 20-MW peak power is an order of magnitude higher than the previous best from femtosecond fiber source at 1300~nm. As an example of the capabilities of the source, these pulses are used to image structure and neuronal activity in mouse brain as deep as 1.1 mm below the dura.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact ultrafast source centered at 850 nm with >200 nm bandwidth (full width at half-maximum) based on a 3 GHz Yb-fiber master-oscillator-power-amplifier system. The output pulses (with up to 13 W average power) from the laser system are coupled into short (<50 mm) pieces of photonic crystal fibers to excite broadband fiber-optic Cherenkov radiation; the resulting broad phase-matching bandwidth due to short fiber length produces an upconverted spectrum spanning in the wavelength range of 750-950 nm with average power of 94, 184, and 380 mW for fiber length of 28, 37, and 48 mm, respectively. The spectrum generated from the 37 mm fiber is then dechirped by eight double-chirped mirrors, leading to compressed pulses ~14 fs in duration. Such an ultrafast source is a promising substitute of multigigahertz mode-locked Ti:sapphire lasers for applications in optical frequency metrology and multiphoton coherent microscopy.

Abstract:We demonstrate a versatile technique for generating continuously wavelength-tunable laser waveforms, with mJ pulse energies and ultrashort pulse durations down to few-cycle in the ultraviolet C and visible spectral ranges. Using the processes of self-phase modulation or Raman-induced spectral broadening, we substantially expand the spectrum of a femtosecond 1030 nm Yb:CaF$_{2}$ laser, allowing for an extensive wavelength-tunability of the second and fourth harmonics of the laser within the visible and ultraviolet C spectral regions at 460-580 nm and 230-290 nm. In addition, our approach exploits nonlinearly assisted self-compression in the second harmonic upconversion of the spectrally broadened infrared pulses with high-order dispersion. This results in 8-30 femtosecond pulses in the visible with an intensity enhancement of up to 30 times. Such an ultrashort visible and ultraviolet C source is ideal for investigating ultrafast dynamics in molecules, solids, and bio and nano systems. Furthermore, this tunable light source enables the generation of bright, narrow-bandwidth, continuously wavelength-tunable, coherent light in the extreme ultraviolet to soft X-ray spectral region. Theoretically, the X-ray pulse structure can consist of sub-200 as pulse trains, making such a source highly suitable for dynamic multidimensional imaging. This includes coherent diffractive imaging of ferromagnetic nanostructures where resonant X-ray scattering is essential, as well as X-ray absorption spectroscopies of advanced quantum materials at pico-nanometer spatial and atto-femtosecond temporal scales.

Abstract:Optical microfibers drawn from conventional fibers have attracted considerable interests and have found many novel applications. Here, we review recent advances in ultrafast fiber lasers based on optical microfibers. Starting with characteristics and fabrication of optical microfibers, which are closely related to ultrafast fiber lasers, we show that characteristics of large portion of evanescent field, tailorable dispersion, high optical nonlinearity, very low optical loss and full compatibility with conventional fibers are greatly beneficial to novel ultrafast fiber lasers. We then highlight recent works on ultrafast fiber lasers based on optical microfibers in terms of fast saturable absorbers made from optical microfiber-supported nanomaterials, dispersion management and high optical nonlinearity, as well as some other novel ultrafast fiber lasers. Finally, we briefly discuss future opportunities for optical microfiber-based ultrafast fiber lasers, such as high-order dispersion management, nonlinearity management and applications for sensing and measurement.

Abstract:Many applications require GHz femtosecond pulses with the center wavelength tunable over a broad range. Recently we have demonstrated a 3-GHz, femtosecond Yb-fiber laser system with >12-W average power using the pre-chirp management method. Nonlinear wavelength conversion based on this powerful laser source has enabled us to derive 3-GHz femtosecond sources at other useful wavelengths: using stimulated Raman scattering inside photonic crystal fibers, we have implemented a femtosecond Raman soliton source tunable between 1.06-1.35 mu m; using fiber-optic Cherenkov radiation, we have demonstrated a 14-fs source centered at 850 nm with >300-mW average power.

Abstract:We report all-fiber tunable ultrahigh-repetition-rate sub-picosecond pulse sources around 1550 nm. The sources are based on cascaded four wave mixing in an erbium-ytterbium co-doped fiber without extra nonlinear fiber. They are seeded by a spacing-tunable phase conjugated dual-wavelength parametric light source centered at 1550 nm. The repetition rate of the pulse sources can be tuned continuously in the range of 0.75-2.75 THz by adjusting the wavelength spacing of the dual-wavelength light source. We use auto-correlator to measure the waveform of the pulses. The duration of the pulses is about 100 fs.

Abstract:Multi-photon microscopy is a powerful tool in biomolecular research. Less complex and more cost effective excitation light sources will make this technique accessible to a broader community. Especially semiconductor diode seeded fiber lasers have proven to be robust, low cost and easy to use. However, their wavelength tuning range is often limited, so only a limited number of fluorophores can be accessed. Therefore, different approaches have been proposed to extend the spectral coverage of these lasers. Recently, we showed that four-wave mixing (FWM) assisted stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) can be harnessed to red-shift high power pulses from 1064 nm to a narrowband output at 1122 nm and 1186 nm and therefore extend the number of accessible fluorophores. In this contribution, we show the applicability of all three wavelengths for multi-photon microscopy and analyze the performance.

Abstract:Controlling femtosecond optical pulses with temporal precision better than one cycle of the carrier field has a profound impact on measuring and manipulating interactions between light and matter. We explore pulses that are carved from a continuous-wave laser via electro-optic modulation and realize the regime of sub-cycle optical control without a mode-locked resonator. Our ultrafast source, with a repetition rate of 10 GHz, is derived from an optical-cavity-stabilized laser and a microwave-cavity-stabilized electronic oscillator. Sub-cycle timing jitter of the pulse train is achieved by coherently linking the laser and oscillator through carrier-envelope phase stabilization enabled by a photonic-chip supercontinuum that spans up to 1.9 octaves across the near infrared. Moreover, the techniques we report are relevant for other ultrafast lasers with repetition rates up to 30 GHz and may allow stable few-cycle pulses to be produced by a wider range of sources.

Recently, this method has been improved using filter-driven DFWM, which exploits both the filtering and nonlinear features of silica microring resonators. However, the fabrication complexity and coupling loss between waveguides and fibers are problematics. In this study, we demonstrate a tens to hundreds of gigahertz stable pulsed all-fiber laser based on the hybrid plasmonic microfiber knot resonator device. Unlike previously reported pulse generation mechanisms, the operation utilizes the nonlinear-polarization-rotation (NPR) effect introduced by the polarization-dependent feature of the device to increase intracavity power for boosting DFWM mode-locking, which we term NPR -stimulated DFWM. The easily-fabricated versatile device acts as a polarizer, comb filter, and nonlinear component simultaneously, thereby introducing a novel application of microfiber resonator devices in ultrafast and nonlinear photonics. We believe that our work underpins a significant improvement in achieving practical low-cost ultrafast light sources.

Abstract:We present an all-fiber all-optical high-speed wavelength-swept laser source at 2 μm with a 3-dB bandwidth of 33 nm and repetition rate of 18.4 MHz, by using optical time-stretch technology, which to our knowledge is the first report of a 2 μm wavelength-swept source without any bulk, free-space optical elements. The light source is built upon a nonlinear polarization rotation mode-locked femtosecond oscillator. A chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) is employed to realize the all-optical wavelength sweeping. In comparison with the commonly used dispersive fibers, the CFBG possesses outstanding power efficiency and temporal stability, especially for wavelength sweeping in the 2.0 μm wavelength regime. A two-stage fiber amplifier system is utilized to boost the output power up to 1.01 W. This all-fiberized mode-locked swept source with high speed and high stability shows great potential as a valuable source for various spectroscopy applications and swept source optical coherence tomography, particularly for highly scattering medium with low water content.

Abstract:Multi-gigahertz fundamental repetition rate, tunable repetition rate and wavelength, ultrafast fiber lasers at wavelengths of 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 µm are experimentally demonstrated and summarized. At the wavelength of 1.0 µm, the laser wavelength is tuned in the range of 1040.1-1042.9 nm and the repetition rate is shifted by 226 kHz in a 3-cm-long all-fiber laser by controlling the temperature of the resonator. Compared with a previous work where the maximum average power was 0.8 mW, the power in this study is significantly improved to 57 mW under a launched pump power of 213 mW, thus achieving an optical-to-optical efficiency of 27%. For comparison, a similar temperature-tuning technique is implemented in a Tm3+-doped ultrafast oscillator but, as expected, it results in a broader tunable range of 14.1 nm (1974.1-1988.2 nm) in wavelength as compared with the value of 1.8 nm for the wavelength of 1.0 µm. The repetition rate in the process is shifted by 294 kHz. For the high-frequency range from 100 kHz to 10 MHz, the value of integrated timing jitter gradually increases with an increase in temperature. Finally, to the best of our knowledge, for the first time, a new method for tuning wavelength and repetition rate is proposed and demonstrated for a femtosecond fiber laser at the wavelength of 1.5 µm. Through fine rotation of the alignment angle between the Er/Yb:glass fiber and a semiconductor saturable absorption mirror, the peak wavelength can be tuned in the range of 1591.4-1586.1 nm and the repetition rate is shifted by 60 kHz.
