Abstract:We report a core-pumped all-normal dispersion mode-locked Nd-doped fiber laser at 910 and 935 nm. The pulse is compressed to 198 fs, and the pulse energy is 1.3 nJ. Abstract:Abstract In this work, we report an all-fiber Nd-doped passively mode-locked fiber laser based on nonlinear polarization rotation mechanism operating in the 1.06 μ m region. When the pump power was 300 mW, a pulse with a maximum average output power of 0.63 mW, a narrowest pulse duration of 1.22 ps and a pulse repetition rate of 14.25 MHz was obtained.

Abstract:An all-normal dispersion tunable mode-locked fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror is experimentally investigated. The laser employs an all-polarization-maintaining figure-8 cavity consisted of main loop and nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. At 1030 nm, the stable mode-locked laser is initiated by adjusting two loops' pump power, which delivers pulse width of 17.61 ps, repetition frequency of 4.133 MHz, and average power of 2.151 mW. A tunable filter is employed in the cavity to select the laser wavelength as well as force the laser operating in all-normal dispersion dissipative regime. The wavelength tuning range is 1015-1080 nm while the pulse duration ranges from 7.86 ps to 17.80 ps.

Abstract:Mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers around 1 μm are attractive for high power applications and low noise pulse train generation. Mode-locked fiber lasers working in soliton and stretched-pulse regime outperform others in terms of the laser noise characteristics, mechanical stability and easy maintenance. However, conventional optical fibers always show a normal group velocity dispersion around 1 μm, leading to the inconvenience for necessary dispersion management. Here we show that optical microfibers having a large anomalous dispersion around 1 μm can be integrated into mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers with ultralow insertion loss down to −0.06 dB, enabling convenient dispersion management of the laser cavity. Besides, optical microfibers could also be adopted to spectrally broaden and to dechirp the ultrashort pulses outside the laser cavity, giving rise to a pulse duration of about 110 fs. We believe that this demonstration may facilitate all-fiber format high-performance ultrashort pulse generation at 1 μm and may find applications in precision measurements, large-scale facility synchronization and evanescent-field-based optical sensing.

Abstract:We utilize a femtosecond laser-inscribed small-period long-period fiber grating (SP-LPFG) to induce a nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) effect for mode-locking pulses in a normal dispersion erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL). The SP-LPFG has a length of 2.5 mm and a period of 25 μm. At wavelengths of 1556 nm and 1561 nm, it exhibits polarization-dependent loss (PDL) values of 20 dB and 14.5 dB, respectively, sufficient to trigger the NPR mechanism. With the pump power increased to 500 mW, the laser achieves normal dispersion mode-locked pulses centered at 1575 nm in the L-band, with a 3 dB bandwidth of 1.35 nm and a pulse width of 1.61 ps. The radio frequency (RF) spectrum reveals an signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of up to 63.6 dB, demonstrating the excellent stability of the laser operation. This SP-LPFG holds promising applications, paving the way for efficient, compact, and stable normal dispersion ultrafast fiber lasers.

Abstract:We demonstrate a femtosecond all-polarization-maintaining Nd fiber laser working at 920 nm mode locked by a biased non-linear loop mirror. The broadest spectral width of the pulse is 25.2 nm and the output power is 8 mW with 320 mW pump power. The measured pulse width is 109 fs with extra-cavity compression. The laser configuration of all-polarization-maintaining fiber can directly enhance the environmental stability of generated pulses. The seed pulses of the oscillator were amplified over 400 mW, which served as the light source for a two-photon microscope. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a 920 nm femtosecond Nd polarization-maintaining fiber laser based on a non-linear loop mirror. Abstract:AbstractA tunable dual- and triple-wavelength passively mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser in the all-normal-dispersion regime is reported and demonstrated. Using a phase-shifted long-period fiber grating as an all-fiber format spectral filter in the laser cavity, a self-starting stabilized multi-wavelength mode-locking operation is achieved by nonlinear polarization evolution. The mode-locked multi-wavelength output can be tuned continuously and smoothly over a spectral range of 10 nm using the phase-shifted long-period fiber grating bandpass filter without re-adjusting any elements in the system. It opens a new possibility to achieve tunable and controllable multi-wavelength mode-locked high-energy laser output in the all-normal-dispersion cavity in an all-fiber format.

Abstract:Nd3+-doped three-level (4F3/2-4I9/2) fiber lasers with wavelengths in the range of 850-950 nm are of considerable interest in applications such as bio-medical imaging and blue and ultraviolet laser generation. Although the design of a suitable fiber geometry has enhanced the laser performance by suppressing the competitive four-level (4F3/2-4I11/2) transition at ∼1 µm, efficient operation of Nd3+-doped three-level fiber lasers still remains a challenge. In this study, taking a developed Nd3+-doped silicate glass single-mode fiber as gain medium, we demonstrate efficient three-level continuous-wave lasers and passively mode-locked lasers with a gigahertz (GHz) fundamental repetition rate. The fiber is designed using the rod-in-tube method and has a core diameter of 4 µm with a numerical aperture of 0.14. In a short 4.5-cm-long Nd3+-doped silicate fiber, all-fiber CW lasing in the range of 890 to 915 nm with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) greater than 49 dB is achieved. Especially, the laser slope efficiency reaches 31.7% at 910 nm. Furthermore, a centimeter-scale ultrashort passively mode-locked laser cavity is constructed and ultrashort pulse at 920 nm with a highest GHz fundamental repetition is successfully demonstrated. Our results confirm that Nd3+-doped silicate fiber could be an alternative gain medium for efficient three-level laser operation.

Abstract:Nd3+-doped fiber lasers at around 900 nm based on the F-4(3/2)-> I-4(9/2) transition have obtained much research attention since they can be used as the laser sources for generating pure blue fiber lasers through the frequency doubling. Here, an all-fiber laser at 915 nm was realized by polarization-maintaining Nd3+-doped silica fiber. A net gain per unit length of up to 1.0 dB/cm at 915 nm was obtained from a 4.5 cm fiber, which to our best knowledge is the highest gain coefficient reported in this kind of silica fiber. The optical-to-optical conversion efficiency varies with the active fiber length and the reflectivity of the output fiber Bragg grating (FBG), presenting an optimal value of 5.3% at 5.1 cm fiber length and 70% reflectivity of the low reflection FBG. Additionally, the linear distributed Bragg reflector short cavity was constructed to explore its potential in realizing single-frequency 915 nm fiber laser. The measurement result of longitudinal-mode properties shows it is still multi-longitudinal mode laser operation with 40 mm laser cavity. These results indicate that the Nd3+-doped silica fiber could be used to realize all-fiber laser at 915 nm, which presents potential to be the seed source of high-power fiber laser.

Abstract:We report, to the best of our knowledge, the first all-fiber passively mode-locked laser around 800 nm wavelength. The laser with a figure-9 cavity configuration consists of a homemade 1146 nm Raman fiber laser as pump source, a 2.1 m-length Tm $^{3+}$ -doped ZBLAN fiber, a 0.8/ $1.15~\mu \text{m}$ fiber end-facet dichroic mirror, and a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM). The NOLM is not only employed as the output cavity mirror, and also initiates passive mode-locking. The mode-locked center wavelength is 816 nm with a 3-dB bandwidth of ~0.35 nm. The mode-locked rectangular pulse in the noise-like regime has a pulse duration of 486.7 ps with the 7.826 MHz repetition rate. The maximum average power is as high as 488.5 mW and the pulse energy is 62.4 nJ. This work represents an important step towards ~800 nm short-wavelength ultrafast fiber lasers and may has potential applications in biological imaging and medical treatment.

Abstract:A passively mode-locked ytterbium-doped all fiber laser has been demonstrated based on the nonlinear polarization rotation technique in a all normal dispersion cavity. By optimizing the coupling ratio and position of the output coupler, stable mode-locked pulses is generated with an average power of 200 mW at a repetition rate of 3.3 MHz, and corresponding to single pulse energy of 60 nJ. The slope efficiency of power is as high as 68%.

Abstract:Compared to Nd: YAG lasers, Nd3+-doped fiber lasers offer superior beam quality, compactness, and heat dissipation, especially in generating single-frequency lasers, which holds great promise for applications in optical atomic clocks, quantum computing, and high-precision bio-photonic imaging. In this study, theoretical simulations of the local environment and experimental analyses on the luminescent characteristics of what we believe to be a novel Nd3+doped fluoro-sulfo-phosphate (FSP) laser glass were performed to mitigate the concentration and hydroxyl quenching effects. Based on that, a highly Nd3+-doped (4 mol%) FSP fiber with a large emission cross-section (3.24 x 10-20 cm2), wide bandwidth (33.7 nm), long lifetime (354 mu s), and high gain coefficient (4.24 dB/cm) was designed. Utilizing this fiber, a 1065 nm SFFL with a low pump threshold of 18 mW, a narrow linewidth of 6.5 kHz, and a 0.9 mu m compact all-fiber laser were demonstrated, highlighting the potential of Nd3+-doped FSP fiber in high-performance fiber lasers.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-normal-dispersion mode-locked fiber laser based on a piece of large-core Yb-doped multi-mode fiber. High order modes are suppressed by coiling the gain fiber to produce large loss for the high modes but low loss for the fundamental mode. Mode-locking is self-starting by exploiting a combination of a grating-aperture based spectral filter with a nonlinear polarization evolution effect. The laser directly delivers 1.1 ps, 107 nJ pulses at a repetition rate of 76.7 MHz, with an average power of up to 8.2 W. The pulses can be compressed externally to 210 fs with a peak power of up to 350 kW.

Abstract:The utilization of single-frequency fiber lasers spans critical domains including gravitational wave detection, coherent optical communication, and atomic physics. Glass fibers doped with rare earth ions serve as pivotal gain media for them, and the quest for advanced fiber matrices is paramount. Herein, a newly developed Nd3+-doped AlF3-Na2SO4-KPO3-Zn(PO3)(2) glass is reported. The glass showcases exceptional attributes including high anti-crystallization stability (>150(degrees)C), elastic modulus (75 GPa), chemical durability (8.1x10(-7)g & sdot;cm(-2)& sdot;min(-1)), Nd3+ concentration (>10(20) ions/cm3), broad effective linewidth (45 nm), and extended lifetime (465 mu s), surpassing those of conventional silica and phosphate glasses. Moreover, a custom-designed double-clad Nd3+-doped fiber with a net gain coefficient of 3.2 dB/cm at 1064 nm is fabricated, and single-frequency laser output with a narrow linewidth of 11 kHz has been obtained utilizing a 1.4-cm-long fiber, indicating the potential of this fiber as a promising gain medium for ultra-narrow-linewidth single-frequency fiber lasers.

Abstract:An efficient femtosecond mode-locked laser using Nd and Y-codoped SrF2 crystal as the gain medium is presented in this letter. A 332 fs pulse centered at 1057 nm with a repetition rate of 89.8 MHz, a spectral width of 4.3 nm, and a mode-locked output power of up to 395 mW has been obtained under 1 W pump power, corresponding to an optical-to-optical efficiency of 39.5% and a slope efficiency of 69%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest optical efficiency in femtosecond Nd-doped crystal lasers.

Abstract:Compared with Yb, Nd has potential in 1120 nm fiber lasers, with the characteristics of larger emission cross section and four-level structure. In this work, Nd-doped fiber (NDF) oscillator and Nd-Raman fiber (NRF) oscillator were built using single-mode 5/125 NDF to study the lasing characteristics at 1120 nm, especially the suppression of amplified spontaneous emission at 1060 nm. Limited by the parasitic oscillation at 1060 nm, the NDF oscillator achieved 5 W output at 1120 nm. The NRF oscillator removed the limitation due to the Raman shift from 1064 nm to 1120 nm and obtained an output of 7.7 W at 1120 nm with a spectral peak-to-peak contrast of 36 dB. This work provides experimental basis for the application of NDF in 1.1 μm.
