Abstract:A tapered silica photonic crystal fiber was designed and fabricated to generate more than one octave spanning supercontinuum (from 550 nm to 1400 nm at -30 dB level), by an input pulse of 40 fs 200 pJ directly from an Yb:fiber ring laser. The low pulse energy spectrum broadening are favorable to generate the high contrast f ceo signals with low noise. The f ceo signal with 40 dB signal-to-noise ratio was detected, which helps to build a compact real-world frequency comb.

Abstract:We demonstrate a stable Yb:fiber frequency comb with supercontinuum generation by using a specially designed tapered single-mode fiber, in which a spectrum spanning from 500 nm to 1500 nm is produced. The carrier-envelope offset signal of the Yb:fiber comb is measured with a signal-to-noise ratio of more than 40 dB and a linewidth narrower than 120 kHz. The repetition rate and carrier-envelope offset signals are simultaneously phase locked to a microwave reference frequency.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-fiber Yb:fiber frequency comb with a nonlinear-amplifying-loop-mirror-based Yb:fiber laser oscillator. The fiber-spliced hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber was used as dispersion compensator, which was also directly spliced to a piece of tapered photonic crystal fiber for an octave-spanning spectrum. The spectrum of the compressed 107 fs laser pulses was broadened, covering 600 nm to 1300 nm in a high-nonlinearity tapered fiber for f to 2f beating. The signal-to-noise ratio of offset frequency was measured to be 22 dB.

Abstract:We report octave-spanning spectrum generated in a tapered silica photonic crystal fiber by a mode-locked Yb:fiber ring laser at a repetition rate as high as 528 MHz. The output pulses from this laser were compressed to 62 fs. By controlling the hole expansion and core diameter, a silica PCF was tapered to 20 cm with an optimal d/Λ ratio of 0.6. Pulses with the energy of 280 pJ and the peak power of 4.5 kW were injected into the tapered fiber and the pulse spectrum was expanded from 500 to 1600 nm at the level of -30 dB.

Abstract:An optical frequency comb based on Yb: ring fiber laser was demonstrated. This is the first time, to our knowledge, f(ceo) has been generated directly from the oscillator without further amplifications above 500 MHz repetition rate. The signal-to-noise ratio of the offset frequency was above 40 dB at 300 kHz resolution bandwidth, which supports easy stabilization. The offset frequency was stabilized for more than 6 h in an open air environment without temperature control. The stabilized repetition rate has an in-loop tracking stability of 4.46 x 10(-13)/tau(1/2). (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Green-light-enhanced super-continuum generation which covers the range from 500 to 1600 nm with a strong peak at 530 nm in a tapered photonic crystal fibre with pump pulse energy as low as 280 pJ from a mode-locked Yb:fibre laser is reported. By the f-to-2f self-reference technique, a 27 dB fceo signal was detected using the frequency pair at the Yb:laser wavelength (∼1060 nm) and this green light peak. It demonstrates the feasibility and high efficiency of fceo beat detection for simplified Yb:fibre laser frequency combs.

Abstract:It is a pivotal step in the measurement of carrier-envelope phase offset frequency in optical femtosecond frequency combs that a stable octave-spanning super-continuum spectrum is generated. In this paper, a home-made Yb:YCOB femtosecond laser pulse is led into a tapered fiber in which some nonlinear effects like self pulse modulation are generated and the four-wave mixing is made to broaden a spectrum to more than one octave-spanning. A Yb:YCOB oscillator emits 130 fs, 620 mW and 76.8 MHz laser pulses, the center wavelength at 1052 nm. Such pulses are focused into a tapered single-mode fiber, and then more than one octave-spanning supercontinuum from 550 nm to 1350 nm has been produced. The coupling efficiency can reach 52% when 323 mW SC laser pulses are detected. Based on the experimental result, a new optical comb will be built with the Yb:YCOB solid state laser as the light source.

Abstract:Supercontinuum generation has received extensive attention because of the innovation of high nonlinear fiber, which makes the supercontinuum system more simple, compact, and efficient. Nonlinear effects are enhanced greatly during the strong interaction between the light and matter in high nonlinear fiber, and the spectrum will be broadened effectively. In this paper, we demonstrate the supercontinuum generation in a photonic crystal fiber and a conventional tapered single-mode fiber pumped by the mode-locked Yb fiber laser. Through the experimental comparison of the supercontinuum spectrum between two kinds of the high nonlinear fibers, the spectral flatness, Raman perturbation, and dispersion wave radiation are discussed for studying the characteristics of supercontinuum generation. Finally, the octave supercontinuum-based both kinds of high nonlinear fibers could be achieved. In particular, the employment of tapered single-mode fiber is proven to be an appropriate candidate for supercontinuum generation and further application.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact 29.3 GHz visible astro-comb covering the spectrum from 560nm to 700nm. A 837 MHz Yb:fiber laser frequency comb phase locked to a Rb clock served as the seed comb to ensure the frequency stability and high side mode suppression ratio. After the visible super-continuum generation, a cavity-length-fixed Fabry-Perot cavity made by ultra-low expansion glass was utilized to filter the comb teeth for eliminating the rapid active dithering. The mirrors were home-made complementary chirped mirrors pair with zero dispersion and high reflection to guarantee no mode skipping. These filtered comb teeth were clearly resolved in an astronomical spectrograph of 49,000 resolution, exhibiting sharp linetype, zero noise floor, and uniform exposure amplitude.

Abstract:We demonstrate laser frequency stabilization using a high-Q MgF2 crystalline whispering gallery mode resonator coupled with a tapered fiber. We discovered that the tapered fiber, acting as a microcantilever, exhibits mechanical resonance characteristics that is capable of transmitting acoustic perturbations to the frequency locking loop. Both experimental and theoretical investigations into the influence of external acoustic waves on the coupling system were conducted. After acoustic isolation, the locked laser exhibits a minimum frequency noise of 0.4Hz2/Hz at 7kHz and an integral linewidth of 68Hz (0.1s integration time). Benefiting from the ultralow frequency noise of the stabilized laser, it achieves a minimum noise equivalent acoustic signal level of 4.76*10-4 Pa/Hz1/2. Our results not only facilitate the realization of ultralow noise lasers but also serves as a novel and sensitive photoacoustic detector.

Abstract:We report on a single-stage, high-repetition photonic crystal fiber amplifier working at 1030 nm seeded by a femtosecond fiber laser, which generates an output with average power of 2.23 W at a repetition rate of 49.5 MHz and a 3 dB spectral width of 5 nm, corresponding to a pulse energy of 45.2 nJ. After amplification, the spectrum of the femtosecond laser is broadened. A home-made, ytterbium-doped, double-clad photonic crystal fiber fabricated by laser sintering technology combined with a solution doping method with a core diameter of only 24 μm is used as the power amplifier medium. The spectral characteristics as well as the suppression of amplified spontaneous emission are discussed in detail. Experiment confirms that the amplified spontaneous emission becomes negligible with increasing incident seed power and no obvious nonlinear effects arise in this experiment. These results can provide motivation for the application of ytterbium-doped photonic crystal fiber and can provide a potential application for the high-power, all-fiber laser in the future.
