Abstract:Mordenite composite membranes were prepared by means of coating a porous α-alumina support with nanosized mordenite seeds followed by hydrothermal crystallization. A systematic investigation was performed on the influence of several factors such as ageing of the reaction mixture, alkalinity, salt addition and temperature on the formation of a mordenite membrane on the seeded support. The ageing of the reaction mixture reduces the growth rate of mordenite crystal along a-axis and b-axis but hardly influences the growth rate along c-axis. As a result, the boundaries between the surface crystals become a little larger with prolonging the period of ageing time. The growth rate of the mordenite crystal along individual axes increases first and then decreases with increasing concentration of sodium hydroxide. A higher alkalinity is unfavorable for the formation of a continuous mordenite membrane. The addition of salt in the reaction mixture has different effect on the growth rate of the mordenite crystal along each axis. With increasing the amount of salt, there was hardly influence on the growth rate along c-axis, whereas an obvious decline was observed in the growth rate along either a-axis or b-axis, which enlarges the boundaries between the surface crystals. The growth rate of the mordenite crystal increases more along c-axis than that along a-axis or b-axis with increasing temperature for hydrothermal crystallization. The use of a temperature as high as 473 K produces a membrane composed of bar-like crystals with larger boundaries.

Abstract:High quality zeolite MFI membranes are successfully synthesized on inexpensive defective macroporous alumina tubes by the seeded growth method. A novel seeding method of wetting assisted rubbing (wetting–rubbing, WR) technique is developed and with this new WR method alumina supports are first wetted with a liquid agent followed by rubbing dry MFI seed crystals. Effects of two typical wetting agents, i.e., alcohol solvents (n-butanol) and water on the seed layer formation and membrane performance are investigated. Experimental data suggest that n-butanol is much more effective than water for preparation of a uniform and continuous MFI seed layer on the defective alumina support, which is attributed to the hydrophobic nature of MFI crystals and their better dispersion in alcohols. The zeolite membranes synthesized at 175°C for 4h on the well-seeded supports have a separation layer thickness of ∼3.5μm, and exhibit a high pervaporation performance with the ethanol/water separation factor of 62 and permeation flux of 1.82kgm−2h−1 for the 5:95 (wt%) ethanol/water mixture separation at 60°C. The WR seeding method may lead to reproducible preparation of zeolite membranes on defective low-cost supports.
Effect of Type and Content of Pore-forming Agents on Properties of Porous Alumina Membrane Support

Abstract:Porous ceramic membrane support with high porosity and high mechanical strength has been fabricated by adding the pore-forming agents, and using three particle sizes of alumina (coarse, medium and fine) as raw material. The effects of the type and the content of the pore-forming agents on the porosity, pore diameter and flexural strength of the membrane supports are studied in detailed. The results show that both the type and the content of the pore-forming agent can be effectively optimized to improve the mechanical and microstructural properties of the alumina support. Added 5 wt% of starch as the pore-forming agent, the porous ceramic membrane support calcinated at 1650°C for 2 h has the porosity of >33%, the flexural strength of > 45 MPa, the pore size of about 6∼8 μm. The amount of pore-forming agent plays a decisive role on the porosity and pore size of porous ceramic membrane support based on SEM characterization.

Abstract:Zeolite NaA membranes were prepared in a clear synthesis solution without the aid of nanoseeds. To improve the properties of the membranes formed in a clear solution, alumina hollow fibers were fabricated by adding silica powder to the conventional spinning slurry, resulting in hollow fibers with a mullite phase. Prior to the membrane synthesis, the hollow fibers were pretreated by dipping in an aged synthesis solution diluted with isopropanol. Dense zeolite NaA membranes on mullite-containing alumina hollow fibers were successfully obtained at 100 degrees C for 2 h without the aid of nanoseeds. The membranes have a good pervaporation performance with a high flux of 10.8 kg m(-2) h(-1) and a separation factor of over 10,000. The abundant mullite-phase hydroxyl groups on the support surface promote the nucleation and growth of zeolite crystals on the support, resulting in dense membranes. Abstract:Zeolite NaA membranes with excellent water/ethanol separation factors are successfully prepared on the inner surface of hollow fibers in a rotating autoclave for the first time. NaA/PES composite hollow fibers (CHF) are first used to investigate the effects of different synthesis conditions such as synthesis composition, synthesis time and synthesis method (static and dynamic) because there are uniform seed crystals on the inner surface of CHF supports. The seeded growth of zeolite NaA membranes on the inner surface of alumina hollow fibers (AHF) supports (1.0mm i.d.) are carried out at 373K. The optimal synthesis conditions obtained are applied to AHF supports to investigate the effects of seed suspensions by the dip-coating seeding method. The effects of the synthesis conditions for AHF supports on the membrane morphology and properties are also investigated. The synthesized membranes are characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The separation properties of the membranes are evaluated by pervaporation of 90wt.% ethanol/water mixture at 348K. Zeolite membranes with high separation factor up to 10,000 can be obtained under the conditions: synthesis composition of 7.5Na2O:2SiO2:Al2O3:600H2O, synthesis time of 5h, using a rotating autoclave (30rpm).

Abstract:Supported γ-Al2O3 membranes without defects were prepared by the sol-gel procedure. The sol-gel method involved peptization of a boehmite (AlOOH) sol prepared from ammonium aluminium sulphate. The morphology of the supported membranes was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and 3D rotational microscopy. Furthermore, the effects of different preparing conditions on morphological characteristics of the membrane were also investigated. The results show that PVA is a good crack-preventing agent and the morphology of supported membranes is affected by many factors, such as Al2O3 and PVA contents of the sol, drying and sintering procedures and intrinsic defects on the substrate surface.

Abstract:Scalable fabrication of membrane substrates, having high strength, customizable pore size, high gas and water permeation, has been key issue in recent years due to the rapid growth of engineered separation processes. This work provides a novel fabrication method for porous Al2O3 membrane substrates (PAS) by using suspension emulsions as pore forming agents and gel-tape-casting as a shaping method. The substrates displayed a smooth surface and a porous internal structure. By adjusting the volume ratio of water and oil from 1:1 to 1:4, the average pore size increased from 0.53 to 1.06 μm. Moreover, the porosity increased from 50.7% to 75.8%, in contrast, the bending strength decreased from 46.7 ± 1.5 to 17.3 ± 1.1 MPa. In addition, the permeability of the N2 and water was improved from 8.13 × 105 to 5.10 × 106 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 and 5.02 × 103 to 1.84 × 104 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 respectively and as a result, this can qualify the membranes for a wide range of applications.

Abstract:Polycrystalline zeolite MFI (silicalite-1) membranes are successfully prepared by the secondary growth method on the α-Al2O3 hollow fibers with a high surface/volume ratio. Influences of the seed suspension concentration, the crystallization time and the content of the structure-directing agent (SDA, e.g., TPAOH) in the synthesis solution are investigated. As-synthesized zeolite seeds and membranes are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The membrane formation and integrity are found to be sensitively depending on the SDA contents in the synthesis solution and the seed amount of the seeded layer. High TPAOH content may cause aluminum leaching from the alumina support seriously and low TPAOH content may lead to non-continuous zeolite layer, leading to poor separation performance. A continuous and dense zeolite seed layer is necessary to obtain the silicalite-1 membrane with good quality. However, too thick seed layer may cause peeling and cracking of the membrane and thus decrease the separation performance. Appropriate TPAOH and seed amount may prevent the α-Al2O3 support leaching effectively. The silicalite-1 membranes prepared in this paper show the highest flux and relatively high separation factor of ethanol/water mixtures compared with the literature data.

Abstract:Zeolite membranes are broadly applied in separation, catalysis, and sensor, yet challenges remain in the preparation process. The design of support is an important component to simplify the synthesis protocol and improve the repeatability. Herein, we present a facile and universal strategy to fabricate high-performance zeolite membranes via engineering the skeleton of hollow fiber supports, on which a variety of high-performance zeolite membranes (e.g., MFI, LTA and FAU) can be obtained just by in-situ crystallization without any modification. The "reactive" support is fabricated by implanting zeolite crystals (e.g., NaA) in the precursor of porous ceramic alumina support. Being dissolved under alkaline condition of the synthesis solution, the zeolite calcination transformant (e.g., NaA-Cal) produced in the support during sintering process can effectively form nucleation sites on the support surface, and continuously provide active species to ensure the continuity of the membrane. This study contributes new insights into the importance of supports for high-performance zeolite membranes. Meanwhile, the synthetic methodology is expected to expand the preparation method of zeolite membranes and promote the large-scale application of zeolite membranes.
Preparation of Zeolite NaA Membranes on Macroporous Alumina Supports by Secondary Growth of Gel Layers

Abstract:Zeolite NaA membranes are synthesized on tubular alpha-Al(2)o(3) supports by the secondary growth of gel layers. The gel layer is prepared by wetting rubbing hydrogel with a composition similar to the secondary synthesis solution xNa(2)O:2SiO2:Al2O3:150H(2)O. The hydrogel's good uniformity makes it easier to gain a uniform gel layer. Zeolite NaA membranes are characterized by SEM and pervaporation separation of a 90 wt % ethanol/water mixture at 75 degrees C. The effects of the pretreatment time, pretreatment temperature, gel loading, and Na2O/Al2O3 ratio of the hydrogel on properties of zeolite NaA membranes are investigated. It is found that zeolite NaA membranes with high separation factors up to 10 000 can be obtained by secondary growth of gel layers. The optimal pretreatment conditions of the hydrogel are as follows: pretreatment temperature, 50 degrees C; pretreatment time, >= 18 h; and gel loading, 0.6-0.9 mg/cm(2). The optimal composition of the hydrogel is 2.2Na(2)O:2SiO(2):Al2O3:150H(2)O, which is the same as the synthesis solution. Like crystal seeds, the gel layer improves the zeolite membrane formation on the support surface, and the role of the gel layer becomes more significant with greater amounts of crystals.

Abstract:This paper presented an innovative method for fabrication of a porous Al2O3/CaAl12O19 ceramic membrane by combining emulsion method, cement curing and tape-casting technologies. The ceramic membrane featured a smooth surface and a porous internal structure. By adjusting the oil–water volume ratio from 1:1 to 4:1, the porosity of the samples increases from 45.6 to 67.3%, density decreases from 2.07 to 1.32 g/cm3 and bending strength decreases from 64.3 ± 1.2 to 31.7 ± 0.6 MPa. More significantly, the membranes showed great gas permeability (1.2 × 107–2.3 × 107 Lm–2 h–1 bar–1), opening up a wide range of applications in the field of gas filtration processes.

Synthesis of nanoporous Al2O3 membranes from polybutyl methacrylate functionalized SiO2 particles as a sacrificial template

Abstract:SiO2 surface is first modified with 3-trimethoxysilyl propyl methacrylate (MPS) in order to graft with polymerized butyl methacrylate (BMA) to form SiO2@MPS-BMA core--shell hybrid particles. The polymeric BMA shell enables anchoring of aluminum ions in tetrachloroethylene solvent, results in SiO2 @Al2O3 composite particles upon subjected to calcination. Removal of the SiO2 core by acid etching forms nanoporous gamma-Al2O3 membrane with a Horvath-Kawazoe (HK) pore size of 1.4 nm and a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 78.6 m2 x g(-1). Transmission electron microscopy reveals formation of interconnected pore channels in the membrane. It is interesting to note that the Al2O3 membrane remains at a reasonably high surface area (53.9 m2 x g(-1)) after an isothermal holding at 1200 degrees C, when gamma-Al2O3 changed into predominately alpha-Al2O3. The process is indeed general and can be extended to the synthesis of other inorganic porous solids.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl alcohol)-sodium alginate composite hydrogels were first introduced to synthesize robust and well-intergrown zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF)/polymer hollow fiber membranes. Through enough adsorption interaction with metal ions by chelation, sufficient nucleation sites for in situ metal-organic framework (MOF) preparation are provided. Using this method, we can not only easily prepare defect-free MOF membranes ignoring the complex modification process and seed deposition but also structurally fix crystalline MOF layers and greatly improve the stiffness and durability of MOF composite membranes. The strategy also gives the appropriate level of generality for synthesis of versatile dense MOF membranes on a variety of polymeric supports. The fabricated ZIF-8/polyethersulfone membrane presented remarkable gas separation performance with H2 permeance of as high as 9.66 × 10-7 mol m-2 s-1 Pa-1 and a high H2/CO2 separation factor of up to 29.0.
PREPARATION OF AMORPHOUS AlO TEMPLATE

Abstract:Porous alumina membranes with different pore diameters are prepared electrochemically. In the experiments, aluminum foil (99.5% purity) is used as the starting material. After annealed at 500℃ for 5 hours in the air, the aluminum foil is chemically polished in 1 M NaOH solution for 10 min. The membrane is carried out at a constant voltage in 0.3 mol/L sulphuric acid (HSO) for 4 hours. A mixture of ice and water provide a surrounding condition of 0℃. The remaining aluminum is removed in a saturated HgCI solution. 5 wt% phosphoric acid is used in the etching treatment step to get different pore diameters by changing etching time at 30℃. TEM images show that the diameter distribution of the pores is very narrow, and the pores are locally ordered. The pore diameter can he adjusted by changing the etching treatment time in a phosphoric acid solution. XRD illustrates that the porous membrane is in the amorphous state.

Abstract:Periodic mesoporous silica was synthesized within the pores of anodic alumina membranes (AAMs) by the acid-catalysed vapor phase synthesis method. A solution containing a template surfactant was introduced into AAM pores under moderate aspiration, prior to the vapor phase synthesis. Characteristic nanoarchitectures of mesoporous silica could be obtained depending on the kind of surfactant used.

Abstract:Two types of mesoporous silica membranes have been prepared and characterized. A membrane fabricated via sol dip-coating was deposited on the polished surface of an alumina support disk. For the purpose of comparison, a membrane fabricated via hydrothermal processing with a three-dimensional pore network was deposited on the surface and within the pores of a macroporous α-alumina support disk. Both membranes were gas tight prior to calcinations, indicating the deposition of initially defect free silica layers. Gas permeation experiments show the gas permeation for N2, Ar, O2 and He to be strongly governed by Knudsen diffusion. Results of multigas separation experiments for N2 over Ar show near ideal Knudsen separation factors for both membranes. Single gas pressure drop experiments show linear fluxes with respect to the inverse square of the molecular weight and square of temperature of each gas at pressure drops of 1.01325×105Pa (1atm). Additional single gas pressure drop experiments indicated no contribution by viscous flow to the net gas transport. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show that each membrane possesses a periodic mesoporous structure. N2 physisorption experiments show that each membrane layer has a surface area of over 850m2g−1 and nearly monodisperse pore size distribution in the mesoporous regime.

Abstract:Porous ceramic membranes with low-cost and high performance are desirable in industrial filtration field. To improve the performance while reducing the production cost, various measures were developed, however, pre-sintering of supports, preparation of membrane-forming suspensions and adoption of extensive organic additives that involved were adverse to cost reduction. Herein, cost-effective one-step co-pressing and co-sintering technique was proposed to prepare asymmetric ceramic membranes. The results revealed that pore parameters and performance of the fabricated membranes could be adjusted by altering mole ratio of Al 2 O 3 to SiO 2 (Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 ) in the support and sintering temperature. The influence of supports on the permeation flux of membranes surpassed that of the parameters of membrane layer. Additionally, the oil rejection rate of the membranes exceeded 96 % within 2 min and even reached 100 % (~60 min), the water flux and steady-state feed flux were 1330–1730 L·m −2 ·h −1 and 470–620 L·m −2 ·h −1 at 1 bar, respectively. Moreover, cake filtration was the main fouling mechanism throughout the separation process. This research provides a feasible and simple method for preparing low-cost high-performance ceramic membrane for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Monolithic mesoporous silica samples of ca. 2 x 2 x 1 mm in dimension with large surface areas (> 900 m(2) g(-1)) and pore volumes (> 0.80 cm(3) g(-1)) have been readily prepared via a sol-gel process in the presence of hydroxy-carboxylic acid compounds as non-surfactant templates, and their pore structure was observed directly by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM).
Preparation and Characterization of Porous Alumina Ceramic Membrane Support

Abstract:By adding pore forming agent and adhesive, the porous alumina ceramic membrane support were prepared by dry pressing and high temperature sintering with alumina powder of average size of 0.5 μm. During preparation, the orthogonal experiment was carried out to investigate the influences of sintering temperature, the amount of the adhesive, moulding pressure and the polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) concentration on the pure water flux of the membrane support, and to determine the optimal preparation conditions The microstructure of support was observed by SEM and the separation performance of membrane was tested by polyethylene glycol(PEG) retention. experiment. The results demonstrated that the pure water flux was significantly affected by the sintering temperature and the content of the adhesive, but little affected by the moulding pressure and the PVA concentration. The water flux reached 60 kg/(m2 h) and the molecular weight cut-off(MWCO) was 8500 when the adding amount of the adhesive was 1.75 w%, 80 mg/ml PVA solution was 2ml, the molding pressure was 9 MPa and sintering temperature was 1535 ℃.
