Abstract:We demonstrate a femtosecond Yb:fiber laser amplification system which delivers 97 W average output power at a repetition rate of 1.08 GHz using a rod-type photonic crystal fiber. The re-compressed output pulse is 233 fs. Numerical simulation was also conducted in agreement with our experimental results.

Abstract:A pulsed laser for laser guide stars with a 100 MHz repetition rate and 1 ns pulse width was achieved by external modulation of a continuous wave (CW) laser with a 70 kHz spectrum width. The laser is amplified first by two fiber pre-amplifiers and then by four solid-state power amplifiers. The laser achieves gains as high as 36 dB in the fiber pre-amplifiers due to the long gain medium length. The output power from the fiber amplifiers is 2.1 W. The laser receives further amplification in the solid-state amplifiers and retains good beam quality by aberration compensation. The final output average power is 102.9 W, and the beam quality factor M-2 is 1.46. The laser reaches high power without spectrum width and pulse width broadening at the 100 MHz repetition rate. The spectrum width of the pulsed laser is less than 0.8 GHz, which is close to the Fourier transform limit. Such a laser with single-frequency, high-repetition, and high-power features along with good beam quality will be valuable for many research areas. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Hundreds of picosecond pulses amplifier based on Yb-doped tapered fiber can serve as the primary power amplifier stage for an all-fiber and polarization-maintained picosecond pulse laser system. Here, we report a high-power narrow-linewidth amplifier stage by using the Yb-doped tapered fiber. In the regime, we have demonstrated amplification of 201.4 ps pulses centered at 1031.4 nm with a spectral width of 0.54 nm to 105 W average power at a repetition rate of 29.3 MHz. The picosecond pulses had a high beam quality with a measured M2 value of 1.36 ∼ 1.51, and the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency reached 56 %. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a high-power amplifier based on Yb-doped tapered fiber, capable of amplifying hundreds of picosecond pulses beyond the hectowatt-level average power, while maintaining high beam quality. This achievement highlights the immense potential of Yb-doped tapered fiber in the field of picosecond pulse power amplification. At last, we have refined the model for the transmission and amplification of picosecond pulses in Yb-doped tapered optical fibers, thereby enhancing simulation accuracy by 8 % and providing valuable references for the in-depth research of tapered fiber pulse amplifiers.

Abstract:We demonstrate a broadband fiber amplifier system emitting 10nm pulses with 33mJ pulse energy at repetition rates between 1 and 20Hz. In combination with a pulse width of 10ns, a corresponding peak output power over than 3MW was achieved. This record performance was enabled by fiber with core diameter of 200μm. Furthermore, in order to suppress amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), multi-stage pulse pump technology was applied and different pumping characteristics had been measured. Finally, 15% extraction efficiency was obtained when output energy reached 33mJ. Output capability of the amplifier was not limited by SBS and ASE but the pump peak power.

Abstract:In this fast track communication, we realized a high energy and peak power broadband (Δλ = 10 nm) all-fiber Yb fiber amplifier chain for the generation of pulses at a wavelength near 1.064 μm, which can possibly be applied in high peak power systems such as high power fiber-laser-driven extreme-ultraviolet lithography or fiber-based inertial confinement fusion (ICF). This system is capable of yielding 31 mJ, 12 ns pulses with peak power above a megawatt at a repetition rate of 20 Hz. Also, to make this system more applicable, a large mode combiner is made to realize an all-fiber structure. Since the system is operated at a low repetition rate, in order to suppress the ASE built between pulse intervals, multi-stage pulse pump technology is applied. Amplification characteristics in the condition of different pump widths were measured.

Abstract:We report on a single-stage, high-repetition photonic crystal fiber amplifier working at 1030 nm seeded by a femtosecond fiber laser, which generates an output with average power of 2.23 W at a repetition rate of 49.5 MHz and a 3 dB spectral width of 5 nm, corresponding to a pulse energy of 45.2 nJ. After amplification, the spectrum of the femtosecond laser is broadened. A home-made, ytterbium-doped, double-clad photonic crystal fiber fabricated by laser sintering technology combined with a solution doping method with a core diameter of only 24 μm is used as the power amplifier medium. The spectral characteristics as well as the suppression of amplified spontaneous emission are discussed in detail. Experiment confirms that the amplified spontaneous emission becomes negligible with increasing incident seed power and no obvious nonlinear effects arise in this experiment. These results can provide motivation for the application of ytterbium-doped photonic crystal fiber and can provide a potential application for the high-power, all-fiber laser in the future.

Abstract:We have developed and analyzed a femtosecond high-power fiber laser system based on chirped-pulse amplification. The system consists of a homemade femtosecond ytterbium-doped fiber oscillator, a fiber pulse stretcher, a pulse picker, three ytterbium-doped fiber amplifiers and a grating-based pulse compressor. A single-mode photonic crystal fiber with a large mode-field diameter of 30 µm is used in the final amplifier, and the special homemade mode-field adapter based on a graded refractive index fiber has been developed for the photonic crystal fiber. Pedestal-free pulses of 15 µJ are generated after pulse compression at a repetition rate of 500 kHz, and the pulse width is 300 fs. When small-core-size fibers are used at the final amplifier, the generation of spiky modulations in amplified spectra is observed. We analyze the physical origin of the spiky spectral modulation and investigate the effect of the spectral modulation on the pulse shape and contrast after pulse compression by numerical simulations.

Abstract:Generation of nanosecond pulses with 55-mJ energy and 4.8-MW peak power are demonstrated in a multistage fiber amplifier system, which is seeded with 10-nm broadband pulses from a superluminescence diode. The pulses are at low repetition of 10 Hz and with width of 10 ns. High energy and high peak power for nanosecond pulses are obtained simultaneously from fiber amplifier. In particular, the peak power is at least two times the previous peak power for nanosecond pulses.
High average power amplification of femtosecond pulses based on the Yb:CaYAlO4 crystal

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrated the direct amplification of femtosecond pulses with the Yb:CaYAlO4 crystal for the first time. A compact and simple two-stage amplifier delivered amplified pulses with the average powers of 55.4 W for σ-polarization and 39.4 W for π-polarization at the center wavelengthes of 1032 nm and 1030 nm, corresponding to 28.3% and 16.3% optical-to-optical efficiencies, respectively. These are to the best of our knowledge the highest value achieved with a Yb:CaYAlO4 amplifier. Upon using a compressor consisting of prisms and GTI mirrors, a pulse duration of 166-fs was measured. Thanks to the good thermal management, the beam quality (M2) parameters <1.3 along each axis were maintained in each stage.

Abstract:We report the high peak power picosecond hybrid fiber and solid-state laser amplifier system. The passively mode-locked solid-state seed source produced an average power of 1.8 W with pulse width of 14 ps and repetition rate of 86 MHz. It was directly coupled into the first Yb-doped polarized photonic crystal fiber amplifier stage. To avoid the nonlinear effects in fiber, the output power from the first stage was merely amplified to 24 W with the narrow spectra broadening of 0.21 nm. For the improvement of the peak power, the dual-end pumped composite Nd:YVO4 amplifier system has been chosen at the second stage. To reduce the serious thermal effect, the thermally bonded composite YVO4 – Nd:YVO4 – YVO4 rod crystal was used as the gain medium. The 53 W TEM00 mode with the peak power of 40 kW, beam quality of M2 < 1.15, corresponding to the optical-optical efficiency of 42.4% was obtained at the hybrid amplifier laser system. The system allows using a low power seed source and demonstrates an increase in the peak power beyond a fiber master oscillator power amplifier's (MOPA's) limit.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high repetition rate, high average power narrow-linewidth fiber amplifier at 1.55 μm eye-safe waveband by using a very-large-mode-area active fiber doping Er and Yb, having a 60-μm-diameter core and a 600-μm-diameter inner cladding. A maximum average power reaches 16 W at a 10 kHz repetition rate for 600 ns pulses in the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) free operation, which calculates to a 1.6 mJ pulse energy and 2.7 kW peak power. In addition, the peak power rises to 4.9 kW with 148 ns pulses at the onset of SBS. The signal peak is located at 1,551.15 nm with a 36 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In order to eliminate the pulse steepening, the pulse shaping technology using a triangular-like wave with a slower rising edge is applied on the input pulses. The half-width of the frequency-intensity spectrum from high-average-power fiber amplifier is about 1.02 MHz, approaching the Fourier transform limit.

Abstract:A hundred nano-joules femtosecond (fs) laser amplification system based on the polarization-maintaining Yb3+ fibers was proposed in this paper. In the proposed system, a Yb-doped mode-locked laser oscillator was used as the light source. Using the chirped pulse amplification method, a two-stage polarization-maintaining Yb-doped fiber amplifier was adopted. Experimental results show that, with compression of the output light, the output pulse energy can reach 113 nJ and the pulse duration is measured as 221 fs.

Abstract:Nanosecond (similar to 10 ns) laser pulses with high peak power of 8MW and high energy of 100 mJ are reported, which are generated by a cascaded pulsed Yb-doped fiber amplifier system working at a repetition frequency of 10 Hz. The peak power that is higher than the self-focusing threshold for Gaussian beams is achieved for the first time in the fiber lasers. To analyze the selffocusing threshold for multimode lasers in fibers, a novel mode decomposition based on the beam quality measurements is introduced. Based on the mode decomposition and nonlinear laser propagation simulations, the threshold of self-focusing for our case is estimated.

Abstract:The Yb:fiber based high-power and high-energy ultrafast lasers usually feature central wavelength of 1030 nm instead of the more common one of 1064 nm, thus limiting some potential wavelength-dependent applications. In this work, a hectowatt 1064-nm femtosecond chirped pulse amplification (CPA) system based on double-stage rod-type photonic crystal fiber (PCF) amplifier was demonstrated, with a pulse energy of 212-μJ and a repetition rate of 0.5 MHz. Compared with our previous work [Opt. Express 30(6), 3611, 2022], two key measures were employed. Firstly, a Yb:YAG crystal was intentionally introduced as a spectral filter for avoiding 1030-nm amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) oscillation, which hence improved the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by 15 dB. Secondly, an additional stage of rod-type PCF amplifier was adopted for further power scaling, achieving an average power of 127 W. Finally, the pulse was compressed to ∼460 fs, with an average power of 106 W and a compression efficiency of ∼83%. The beam quality factors (M2) were measured to be M2 X = 1.12 and M2 Y = 1.09. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest pulse energy among 1064-nm hectowatt-level femtosecond lasers, thus providing a high-quality source for wavelength-dependent applications. For example, it can be used as a driver for high-repetition-rate vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) sources about 10.5 eV, with an expected conversion efficiency of up to 1%.

Abstract:An all-fiber and polarization-maintained (PM) picosecond pulses laser system is demonstrated based on tapered active fiber, which simultaneously enables high average and peak power. By carefully adjusting the input signal power and combining the advantages of tapered active fiber for high power scaling, the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and the stimulate Raman scattering (SRS) are effectively balanced and suppressed. An average output power of 141 W and peak power of ∼1.3 MW pulse laser is achieved with 3.4 ps pulse width at the repetition rate of 30 MHz. The polarization extinction ratio (PER) and beam quality (M2 factor) are measured to be ∼16 dB and 1.19, respectively. As far as we know, this is the first demonstration of all-fiberized picosecond fiber source beyond megawatt (MW) peak power and hectowatt-level average power along with linear polarization and near-diffraction-limited beam quality.

Abstract:A new architecture which is based on the chirped pulse amplification scheme is proposed to increase the pulse energy of the mode-locked fiber laser. The idea was applied to a passively mode-locked laser using an ytterbium (Yb/sup 3+/)-doped double-clad silica fiber. Mode-locking was achieved by nonlinear polarization evolution associated to frequency-shifted feedback technique for self-starting. A compressor and a stretcher, based on diffraction gratings, permitted us to manage the dispersion and to reduce the pulse power in the fiber. The laser delivered chirped pulses at 1050 nm with 11.8-nJ energy at a 9.3-MHz repetition rate (110-mW average power) which were subsequently compressed to 196-fs duration.

Abstract:In this paper a single-channel chirped pulse amplification laser system based on Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber was constructed, which achieved a pulse energy output of 1 mJ with a beam quality close to the diffraction limit. Pulsed synchronous pumping was used to suppress amplified spontaneous emission at a repetition rate of 1 kHz. The de-chirped pulse width of 231 fs was achieved by precise systematic dispersion control, and the corresponding peak power reached 3.85 GW.
