Abstract:The latest status of fabrication of SiCp/Al composites by stir-casting process is reviewed.Several problems existing in stir-casting process are pointed out.The position and prospect of stir-casting process for SiCp/Al composites are predicted.

Abstract:In order to understand the various problems of SiCp/Al composite material prepared by stirring casting method(how to control the uniform distribution of the particles, and the solidification process of the matrix alloy under the particles action and so on), composites with uniform structure and good performance were prepared by using stirring casting method.The effects of parameters of particulate pretreatment and stirring process on microstructure and properties of composites were mainly analyzed. The application of stirring casting method in the preparation of SiCp/Al composite material was discussed.

Abstract:An air-isolated stir casting (AISC) technology was developed to solve the problems of air entrapment, inhomogeneous distribution of SiC particles and formation of weak compound Al4C3 in conventional stir casting of Al-SiC composite. To eliminate the air entrapment, a threaded cover screwed into the threaded crucible was used to evacuate the air in the crucible and a sealing plug on the cover was applied to isolate the Al-SiC slurry from the atmosphere. To realize the homogeneous distribution of SiC particles rapidly, a high-speed electromagnetic stirring was carried out to stir the Al-SiC slurry with the help of three uniform-distributed tilt blades on the crucible inner wall. Furthermore, the primary solid Al particles and the high viscosity of slurry were utilized to restrain the settling of SiC particles during casting. To avoid the formation of Al4C3 under short stirring time, the stirring temperature was dropped below 650 ℃. The theoretical analysis and the results of SEM, XRD, TEM and HRTEM show that the homogeneous Al-SiC composite with no air entrapment and Al4C3 can be processed by AISC technology. The mechanical and wear results and mechanism analysis show that the AISC Al-SiC composite possesses excellent performances.

Abstract:AbstractStir casting is an economical process for the fabrication of aluminum matrix composites. There are many parameters in this process, which affect the final microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites. In this study, micron-sized SiC particles were used as reinforcement to fabricate Al-3 wt% SiC composites at two casting temperatures (680 and 850 °C) and stirring periods (2 and 6 min). Factors of reaction at matrix/ceramic interface, porosity, ceramic incorporation, and agglomeration of the particles were evaluated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and high-resolution transition electron microscope (HRTEM) studies. From microstructural characterizations, it is concluded that the shorter stirring period is required for ceramic incorporation to achieve metal/ceramic bonding at the interface. The higher stirring temperature (850 °C) also leads to improved ceramic incorporation. In some cases, shrinkage porosity and intensive formation of Al4C3 at the metal/ceramic interface are also observed. Finally, the mechanical properties of the composites were evaluated, and their relation with the corresponding microstructure and processing parameters of the composites was discussed.

Abstract:Abstract With the rapid development, microelectronic technology has put forward strict requirements for electronic packaging materials (EPMs). SiCp/Al composites with high volume fraction of SiC has become an ideal candidate for EPMs due to their superior properties including high thermal conductivity, tailorable coefficient of thermal expansion as well as low density in many fields. This study reviewed the manufacturing process of SiCp/Al composites in recent years. In addition, the interface between particle and matrix, the application, and the development trend of SiCp/Al composites has also been summarized.

Abstract:This study investigates a novel methodology to intricately craft a HAMMC and thoroughly examine its multifaceted mechanical and tribological characteristics. By combining silicon carbide (SiC) and fly ash as reinforcements, a unique identity is bestowed upon this hybrid composite, enhancing its structural integrity and functional attributes. Stir casting is the chosen methodology for fabricating this composite, favored for its economic viability and suitability for large-scale manufacturing. In this research, the emphasis is on developing a cost-effective composite that not only meets stringent economic considerations but also exhibits improved material properties. Within the realm of hybrid metal matrix composites, the well-regarded Al6061 takes on the role of the matrix material, while the synergistic inclusion of fly ash and SiC serves as reinforcing constituents. Three specimens with compostion 90% Al6061 + 5% SiC +5% Fly ash, 90% Al6061 + 10% SiC +6% Fly ash and 90% Al6061 + 15% SiC +7% Fly ash were fabricated. To unravel the intricacies of the fabricated Al6061 metal matrix composite, comprehensive tests are employed. These tests, including the Pin-on Disc test, Scratch test, Rockwell Hardness test, and Charpy Impact test, collectively work to unveil the nuanced tribological and mechanical behaviors encapsulated within this innovative alloy. The results indicated significant improvement in wear resistance in specimen comprising 78% Al6061 + 15% SiC +7% Fly Ash and volumetric loss found to have 0.96 g. Superior hardness characteristics and enhanced abrasion resistance found in 78% Al6061 + 15% SiC +7% Fly Ash than other two specimens. The highest impact strength exhibited in 90% Al 6,061 + 5% SiC +5% Fly ash specimen.

Squeeze casting technique for fabricating SiCp/Al composites with lower volume fractions of SiC particles

Abstract:A practical avenue was pointed out to fabricate SiCp/Al composites with low volume fraction by a modified squeeze casting technique in which aluminum powders were mixed into the SiC particle perform. The effects of ball milling conditions, such as rotating speed, ball milling time and the ratio of the amount between SiC particle and aluminum powder, on the size of the mixed particle were investigated. The results indicate that the distribution of SiC particles is homogeneous in the different groups of the mixed particles. The mixed particles scaled between 56 mum and 125 mum were used to produce preform by dry forming. The SiCp/Al composites with low volume fraction (15%) were fabricated by squeeze casting method. The microstructure of the composites was observed and analyzed by using SEM, indicating high relative density and homogeneous distribution of the SiC particles in the SiCp/Al composites. The results of tensile tests of the composites indicate that the mechanical properties of the composites are higher than those of the unreinforced aluminum matrix.

Abstract:SiCp/Al composite materials are widely used in various industries such as the aerospace and the electronics industries, primarily due to their excellent material properties. However, their machinability is significantly weakened due to their unique characteristics. Consequently, efficient and precise machining technology for SiCp/Al composite materials has become a crucial research area. By conducting a comprehensive analysis of the relevant research literature from both domestic and international sources, this study examines the processing mechanism, as well as the turning, milling, drilling, grinding, special machining, and hybrid machining characteristics, of SiCp/Al composite materials. Moreover, it summarizes the latest research progress in composite material processing while identifying the existing problems and shortcomings in this area. The aim of this review is to enhance the machinability of SiCp/Al composite materials and promote high-quality and efficient processing methods.

Abstract:Study on fabrication and application of instrument grade SiC/Gr/Al composites composites began in the past decade. SiC/Al composites were generally fabricated by casting or powder metallurgy methods. The presence of hard, brittle and abrasive SiC reinforcement makes the material difficult to form or machine using traditional manufacturing processes. In order to improve machinability of the SiCp/Al composites, graphite particles have been added into the composites, SiC/Gr/Al composites were designed and fabricated by by squeeze casting technology for inertial instrument. Compared with aging procedure, the micro-yield stress of SiC/Gr/Al composite by three thermal cycling procedure(A+TCC(0), A+TCC(-70) and A+TCC(-196)) is enhanced, The micro yield stress of SiC/Gr/Al composite by A+TCC(0) procedure is 333 MPa. With the addition of 5% graphite particles, the micro yield stress decrease by 10%. But for conventional inertial instrument materials (Al alloy, beryllium and bearing steel), the micro yield stress is relatively high and suitable for most engineering applications. The tool life was prolonged by 130% at low cutting speed by the addition of 5% graphite particles and good machinability is obtained.

Abstract:The microstructure of SiC particle reinforced Al-7.0%Si (mass fraction) composite prepared by stir casting was simulated by a modified cellular automaton method coupled with finite difference method, and 3D mathematical and numerical models under normal solidification condition were established including macro heat transfer, nucleation, equiaxed dendrite growth and particle pushing. The effects of particle volume fraction on macro heat transfer, composite microstructure and particle distribution were studied. The simulated results can clearly show the evolution of the microstructure of composite and particle clustering phenomena caused by particle pushing, which are in good agreement with the experimental ones. With the increase of SiC particle volume fraction, solidification time is decreased, composite matrix grains are refined and particles distributed more uniformly.

Abstract:SiCp/Al composites have excellent properties that traditional metals cannot match and have broad application prospects in the automotive industry, precision instruments, and other fields. However, due to the significant differences in physical properties between SiC particles and aluminum matrix, as well as the non-uniform distribution of particles in the aluminum matrix, SiCp/Al composites have strong difficult-to-process properties, which restricts the engineering application of SiCp/Al composites. This paper mainly reviews the research status of SiCp/Al composites in chip morphology and its formation mechanism, machining surface quality, cutting force, cutting temperature, and auxiliary machining and looks forward to its future research direction, which is of positive significance to promote the further development of this material.

Abstract:Hybrid preforms containing SiC whiskers and nanoscale SiC particles were made by wet blending. The Al-based hybrid composites, with 20vol.% SiC whiskers and 0, 2, 5, 7vol.% SiC nanoparticles, were fabricated by squeeze casting route. The optimum squeezing casting parameters, especially infiltration pressure for fabricating the (SiCw·SiCp)/Al hybrid composites were obtained from the infiltration tests. The reinforcements distribute homogeneously in the matrix of the as cast composites, and the strength of the composites is found to increase with increasing content of the nanoparticles.

Abstract:Current preparation methods of Cu-Al2O3 composite materials and shortcomings of these specific preparation techniques are reviewed. Influences of different Al2O3 content on the performance of Cu-Al2O3 composites are discussed. The size of reinforcement and the mechanism of joint function of second phase and alloying elements are evaluated. The trend of Cu-Al2O3 composites in volume fractions of reinforcement, size and mechanism of joint function of second phase and alloying elements together with preparation techniques are forecast.

Abstract:Friction stir processing (FSP) has been developed to produce upper surface modification of metallic materials in recent studies. The feasibility to make bulk dispersal SiCp reinforced Al metal matrix composites (MMCs) were studied successfully in this paper. The distribution of well-dispersed SiCp got a range of 5mm×2mm on the cross-section of joints. Excellent bonding between SiCp and base metal can be obtained by this process. The percentage of SiCp over 1.5% was found in the bulk reinforced region not only confined to 100μm magnitude under the upper surface. The microhardness of MMCs can reach steady 10% higher than the one of the base metal (about HV88) at the depth of 1.0mm under surface.

Abstract:This study investigates the enhancement of aluminum-based composite manufacturing by incorporating Si3N4 reinforcement via the stir casting technique. Aluminum alloy serves as the matrix material, augmented with ceramic reinforcement particles. The alloy is melted at approximately 700°C in a muffle furnace, with ceramic particles gradually introduced and dispersed homogeneously through continuous stirring at 400 rpm for 10 minutes. The uniform distribution of Si3N4 particles underscores the efficacy of the stirring technique. Addition of 7.5% Si3N4 reinforcement results in substantial improvements across mechanical properties: tensile strength increases by 24.76%, hardness by 24.76%, fatigue strength by 26.78%, and wear resistance by 29.50%. These enhancements highlight the effectiveness of Si3N4 reinforcement in augmenting the performance of aluminum composites. The findings hold significant implications for industries requiring lightweight, high-strength materials, such as aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing, suggesting promising avenues for further research and practical applications in advanced engineering materials.

Abstract:In this work, SiCnp/Al6082 aluminum matrix composites were prepared by squeeze casting (SC) combined with stir casting, and the effects of nano-sized SiC particles (SiCnp) and SC on microstructure and mechanical properties of the 6082 aluminum alloy were investigated. The result shows that the SiCnp were uniformly distributed in the 6082 aluminum matrix alloy using the stir casting. With the addition of the SiCnp, the microstructure of the 6082 aluminum alloy was obviously refined, up to 30.55% grain refinement compared to the 6082 aluminum alloy without the addition of the SiCnp. The as-cast ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation of the SiCnp/Al6082 aluminum matrix composites were enhanced, which increased by 8.92%, 12.16%, and 12.60%, respectively, compared with the 6082 matrix alloy without the SiCnp. After the SC, the compactness of the SiCnp/Al6082 composites was significantly improved, and the grain of the composites was further refined. The ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation of the SiCnp/Al6082 composites fabricated by the SC respectively increased by 29.81%, 43.18%, and 226.28%, compared to the 6082 aluminum alloy obtained by gravity casting (GC).

Abstract:A deformable SiCp/Al composite was fabricated by squeeze casting technique using the SiC particle preform with a controllable volume fraction which was made by adding aluminum powder into the preform. The deformability of SiCp/Al composite was studied by hot extrusion and the effect of hot extrusion on the microstructure and properties of the composite was investigated. The results show that the 25 vol% SiCp/Al composite fabricated by the modified squeeze casting method could be extruded successfully by an extrusion ratio of 25:1, and its strength, modulus and tensile elongation were improved by the hot extrusion.

Abstract:In this paper, the powder mixing and semi-solid extrusion technology for fabricating SiCp/2024Al composites and the material’s microstructure feature and mechanical properties were studied. From the extrusion stress–displacement curves of semi-solid extrusion under different temperature, it is found that the deformation force during semi-solid extrusion is low and steady. The microstructure of SiCp/2024Al composites fabricated by the present method is characterized by a well-densified matrix and uniformly distributed reinforcement particles, and there is no apparent interface reaction. Compared to matrix alloys, the elastic modulus, yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of SiCp/2024Al composites have been substantially improved. Compared to similar composites fabricated by other technologies, SiCp/2024Al composites fabricated by the present technology in this paper possess relatively higher elongation.
