Abstract:As the Fe-25.6Mn-5.1Si-4.1Ni-1.8Co(wt%) shape memory alloy is prestained at -80 C, the recovery strains increase rapidly with the increase of prestrains, and at last it reaches a constant value. The reverse transformation temperature rises also with the increase of prestrains. Microstructure analysis indicates that the stress-induced martensite is usually plastically deformed and stabilized. This stabilization of the stressinduced martensite is an important reason for lower recovery strains in the polycrystalline Fe-Mn-Si alloys. finally, the characteristics of stabilization and possible way to prevent it are also discussed.
Effects Of Parent Phase Aging And Thermal Cycling On Shape Memory Characteristics In A Cu-Zn-Al Alloy

Abstract:The changes in shape-memory-effect (SME) during aging at 130��C, 150��C and 170��C for the parent phase and thermal cycling in a Cu-26% (wt) Zn-4% (wt) Al alloy quenched from 800��C were studied through an exact measurement on the SME. The shape memory recovery rate increases remarkably at the early aging stage, during that time the quenched martensite transforms to the parent phase. However, after reaching a maximum value of the AME, it decreases with the aging duration. These facts indicate that two opposite effects exist with both different mechanisms between annihilation of martensite stabilization and bainite transformation. The declination of recovery rate produced from the thermal cycling under bending condition is more smooth than that under free condition. This phenomenon can be considered as that the existing stress is advantageous to inducing the martensitic transformation hence leading to remarkably increase the recovery rate of martensite.

Abstract:Cu–Al–Fe shape memory alloys are a new kind of smart materials with high phase transition temperature. However, poor thermal stability and poor shape memory effect limit the commercial application range. In this paper, the effect of Al content on microstructure, thermal stability, shape memory effect and mechanical properties of Cu–Al–Fe shape memory alloys was investigated systematically by changing Al content, so as to obtain the optimal composition ratio for better commercial application. The results show that in the as-cast state, the microstructure is a mixture of (Cu) phase, β′ martensite and Fe(Cu, Al) phase with Al content of 11 mass%, and a mixture of β′ martensite and Fe(Cu, Al) phase with Al content of 12 mass% and 13 mass%. After quenching, β′ martensite exists in all alloys, while (Cu) phase and Fe(Cu, Al) phase disappear, and γ′ martensite also exists at Al content of 13 mass%. The shape memory alloy effect of as-cast alloy is enhanced with the increase of Al content, while the shape memory effect of quenched alloy increases first and then decreases. Among them, Cu 82 Al 13 Fe 5 has the best shape memory effect, the recovery ratio reaches 84.38%, and it also has the best thermal stability.

Abstract:The influence of parent phase aging on the shape memory effect of the Cu-11.1Al-6.5Mn-1.6Zn-0.1Zr alloy was studied.The phase transformation,the changes of microstructure and crystal structure of the alloy in aging process were investigated by XRD,SEM and optical microscope.The experimental results show that the tested alloy exhibits excellent shape memory stability for aging below 300℃. When the aging temperature is over 350℃,the shape memory effect decreases markedly due to the eutectoid reaction (β→α+γ 2).

Abstract:The microstructure, martensitic transformation behavior, mechanical and shape memory properties of the Ti–V–Al–Cu light weight shape memory alloys were investigated systematically. The results showed that the phase constitution gradually evolved from single α″ martensite phase to the complete β phase with the Cu content increasing in the solution treated Ti–13V–3Al-xCu alloys at room temperature. The spear-like martensite variant constituted the typical self-accommodation configuration, and {111} type I twins and <211> type II twins coexisted in the Ti–V–Al–Cu alloys. Moreover, Ti2Cu precipitate can be observed in the Ti–V–Al–Cu alloys with the higher Cu contents. The martensitic transformation temperature of Ti–V–Al–Cu alloys decreased continuously with the increased Cu content. The Ti–V–Al–Cu alloys with the higher transformation temperature and higher strength as well as the superior shape recovery characteristics can be obtained by tailoring Cu content. It was the perfect combination of solid solution strengthening, grain refinement and precipitation strengthening to promote the enhancement of matrix strength. The maximum recoverable strain was 4.4%, for 6% pre-strain and the reverse martensite transformation temperature was 334 °C in the optimal Ti–13V–3Al-0.5Cu alloy.

Abstract:The thermal stability of polycrystalline Ni54Mn25Ga20.9Gd0.1 high-temperature shape memory alloy was systematically investigated by the combination of X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and compression tests. The results show that the non-modulated tetragonal martensite of structure and type I(111)M twin of substructure was unchanged even after 2000 thermal cycles, and some dislocation structures were formed in martensite of thermal-cycled alloy. The martensitic transformation temperatures after different thermal cycles have no difference, and the shape memory effect decreased from 7.5% to 7.4% due to formation of dislocation structures. The excellent thermal stability was ascribed to the single-phase and well self-accommodated martensitic twins.

Abstract:In extreme temperature environments, a newly emerging engineering application involves both the active and passive control of structures using cryogenic shape memory alloys, which are smart materials able to recover high deformation below the freezing point. With the objective of carrying out new advances in this area, the present work aims to investigate the Cu-7.5Al-13.5Mn (wt.%) shape memory alloy. Thermal, microstructural, and thermomechanical analyses of as-cast and hot-rolled specimens were performed, taking into account the effects of annealing and solubilization. It was observed that the phase transition occurs at temperatures below 120 K and changes according to the thermo-mechanical path. Specifically, hot-rolling lowers the phase transition temperature range with respect to the as-cast condition–from 34 K to 23 K for Mf, and from 89 K to 80 K for Af. Additionally, when the annealing temperature rises, the phase transformation temperature increases as well, and the alloy loses its cryogenic features when heat treated above 473 K. Finally, loss factors of 0.06 and 0.088, which were respectively found in dynamic and static settings, validate the material's good damping response.

Abstract:This paper deals with the degradation of the two way shape memory effect during thermal cycling between different temperatures. The alloy with composition Cu-20.4Zn-5.6Al (wt%) shows a comparative degradation behavior of the two way shape memory effect obtained by different methods. The mechanisms are different for different training routines. The constrained thermal cycling training is related to stabilized martensite, and the combined stress induced martensite and shape memory effect training mainly results in suitable dislocation arrays.

Abstract:The present study investigated the microstructure, phase transformation behavior, and functional characteristics of the multicomponent Ti–Ni–Cu–Al–V shape memory alloys with the different annealing treatments. The results indicated that the multicomponent Ti–Ni–Cu–Al–V alloy annealed at 673 K/5 min was primarily composed of the B2 parent phase and Ti2(Ni,Cu) type precipitates distributing along the grain boundaries. As the annealing temperature increased and the annealing time extended, the chemical composition of the matrix changed slightly due to the precipitation of the Ti2(Ni,Cu) phase. Consequently, the martensitic phase (B19) gradually appeared and the volume friction of the martensite phase gradually increased. The phase constituents of the present Ti–Ni–Cu–Al–V shape memory alloy evolved from a B2 austenite phase to a B19 martensite phase with the annealing temperature/time increasing. Additionally, as the annealing temperature and time increased, the grain size also increased. The increment in annealing temperature and the prolongation of annealing time resulted in an increase of martensitic transformation temperatures as a result of the comprehensive effect of chemical composition, grain size, defects’ density, etc. Both yield strength and fracture strength decreased, while the elongation significantly increased (reaching 28% at 1123 K/60 min) with the annealing temperature rising and annealing time prolonging. Under the successively applied prestrain to 8% condition, the recoverable strain decreased from 4.2% to 1.7% for the annealed Ti–Ni–Cu–Al–V shape memory alloy with the annealing temperature/time increasing.

Abstract:An overview is presented on the structural and phase transformations and physical and mechanical properties of those multicomponent copper-based shape memory alloys which demonstrate attractive commercial potential due to their low cost, good shape memory characteristics, ease of fabrication, and excellent heat and electrical conductivity. However, their applications are very limited due to brittleness, reduced thermal stability, and mechanical strength—properties which are closely related to the microstructural features of these alloys. The efforts of the authors of this article were aimed at obtaining a favorable microstructure of alloys using new alternative methods of thermal and thermomechanical treatments. For the first time, the cyclic martensitic transformations during repeated quenching, methods of uniaxial megaplastic compression, or torsion under high pressure were successfully applied for radical size refinement of the grain structure of polycrystalline Cu-Al-Ni-based alloys with shape memory. The design of the ultra- and fine-grained structure by different methods determined (i) an unusual combination of strength and plasticity of these initially brittle alloys, both under controlled heat or hot compression or stretching, and during subsequent tensile tests at room temperature, and, as a consequence, (ii) highly reversible shape memory effects.

Abstract:Previous work did not identify occurrence stage and degree of martensitic stabilization in Cu-based shape memory alloys due to lower heating rate. By flash heating into liquid metals, we systematically clarified contribution of static ageing and the ones of dynamic ageing during process of quenching and heating to the martensitic stabilization in directly-quenched CuZnAl alloys. We discovered that the dynamic ageing during the cooling process of quenching could instantaneously stabilize a few already formed martensites totally although it did not stabilize the overwhelming majority of martensites. The dynamic ageing during the process of subsequent slow heating was responsible for the partial and total stabilization of overwhelming majority of martensites. Both the amounts of martensites stabilized totally by the two dynamic ageing positively depended on Ms temperature. The conventional up-quenching into oil or air actually made more martensites stabilized due to the dynamic ageing during the process of slow heating. The increase in As temperature owing to the static ageing also positively depended on the Ms temperature. These dependences cannot be explained by two well-known mechanisms for the martensitic stabilization.

Abstract:Microstructure and martensitic transformation behavior of the Cu72Al26.5Nb1.5 high temperature shape memory alloy have been studied. The experimental results show that the microstructure of the as-melted Cu72Al26.5Nb1.5 alloy consists of four phases: matrix, gamma(2) phase, Nb(Cu, Al) phase and Nb(Cu, Al)(2) phase. With the increase of cooling rate, the amount of the gamma(2) phase decreases, while the shape and amount of the Nb(Cu, Al) phase and Nb(Cu, Al)(2) phase have no obvious change beta(1)'<->beta(1) martensitic transformation/reverse transformation occurs during cooling/heating. The parent phase has a D0(3)-ordered BCC structure while the martensite has a M18R monoclinic structure. The martensite of the experimental alloy mainly exhibits self-accommodation morphology, and the substructure is mainly (1210) twin. The alloy aged in the martensite shows the pronounced martensite stabilization, i.e. reverse transformation temperatures increase remarkably with the increase of aging time. When aging in the parent phase, martensitic transformation temperatures drop at the first stage, then increase with the increase of aging time. With further aging, the transformation temperature shows stable value. The reverse transformation temperature increases at the early stage of aging and keeps constant with the further increase of aging time.

Abstract:The effects of aging on the microstructures, martensitic transformation and shape memory behaviors of a Ti50.5Ni33.5Cu11.5Pd4.5 alloy were investigated. The precipitation of Ti2Cu-type phase can both improve the shape memory effect and functional stabilities, while keeping near-zero thermal hysteresis. Aged at 500 degrees C for 1 h, the strain recovery rate reaches a value of 97.8% while the tensile deformation is 5%, which is 21% higher than that of the solution-treated alloy. Meanwhile there show excellent functional stabilities during thermal cycling in both loaded and stress-free situations. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The effect of heat treatment on shape memory properties of the ductile CuAlMn alloys was studied. The results show that the heating temperature for the solution treatment should be around 100 degrees C above the transformation temperature in order to obtain good shape memory properties, heating for 10 min at this temperature doesn' t have much influence on the shape memory properties, faster cooling rate helps to obtain good shape memory properties and the shape recovery rate(SRR) decreases with raising ageing temperatures. For Cu-16Al-10Mn alloy, the heat treatment process to acquire higher recovery rate is heating at 800 degrees C for 15 min, quenching into ice water and ageing below 150 degrees C for 15 min. For Cu-17Al-10Mn alloy, the process is the same except heating at 700 degrees C.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to investigate the microstructure, martensitic transformation behavior, shape memory effect and superelastic property of Ti49.6Ni45.1Cu5Cr0.3 alloy, with Cu and Cr substituting for Ni. After annealing, the alloy showed single step A–M/M–A transformations within the whole annealing temperature range of 623K to 1273K even in the presence and Ti2(Ni, Cu) precipitates. With the increase of the annealing temperature, the transformation temperatures exhibited three stages: increasing from 623K to 873K, decreasing from 873K to 1023K and unchanging from 1023K to 1273K. Meanwhile, the critical stress for stress induced martensitic (SIM) transformation decreased to a minimum value and increased after that, exhibiting a V shape curve. The alloy annealed at 623, 773 and 923K exhibited shape recovery ratio more than 90% when the deformation strain was below 20%.

Abstract:Present proposed mechanisms for ageing-induced martensitic stabilization cannot explain why the amount of martensites losing reverse transformation ability (RTA) positively depended on Ms temperatures in directly-quenched CuZnAl alloys owing to dynamic ageing during the cooling process of quenching and subsequent slow heating. We proposed and confirmed that the number of vacancies at martensites boundaries (Nvmb) was the key factor controlling the occurrence of martensitic stabilization and its resulting RTA or loss in shape memory effect, not the number of vacancies inside the martensites and their long-range diffusion. All reported results can be rationalized by the positive dependence of original Nvmb on the Ms temperature.

Abstract:The cooling rate has a huge effect on the microstructure and properties of shape memory alloys. In this work, taking Cu–13Al–5Fe high-temperature shape memory alloy as an example, the effects of cooling rate on the microstructure, shape memory effect and mechanical properties were studied. The results show that the alloy has good properties in the water-cooled condition. When the alloy under water-cooling state is deformed at room-temperature, the recovery strain is as high as 4.72%, and the phase transition temperature exceeds 357 °C. Moreover, the ratio of temperature to recovery strain is higher significantly than that of other reported shape memory alloys. This class of Cu–13Al–5Fe alloy may be used as high-temperature shape memory materials with high and wide working temperature range as high-sensitive driver or detector.

Abstract:Using the methods of electron microscopy and X-ray analysis in combination with measurements of the electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility, the authors have obtained data on the peculiar features of pre-martensitic states and martensitic transformations, as well as subsequent decomposition, in the alloys with shape memory effect of Cu-14wt%Al-3wt%Ni and Cu-13.5wt%Al-3.5wt%Ni. For the first time, we established the microstructure, phase composition, mechanical properties, and microhardness of the alloys obtained in the nanocrystalline state as a result of severe plastic deformation under high pressure torsion and subsequent annealing. A crystallographic model of the martensite nucleation and the rearrangements β1→β1' and β1→γ1' are proposed based on the analysis of the observed tweed contrast and diffuse scattering in the austenite and the internal defects in the substructure of the martensite.
