Abstract:A new organic-inorganic hybrid material, which shows photo-induced reduction of refractive index as well as volume contraction, is prepared using a sol-gel method.This material is coated on a Si substrate by spin-coating to manufacture film.After irradiated by ultraviolet (UV) light with a deuterium lamp for 5 h, the thickness of film decreases largely by 55%, and the refractive index of film changes from 1.484 to 1.445 at 550 nm.The film's optical thickness exhibits an exponential change with the increasing irradiation time.Futhermore, the photo-patternning of the organic-inorganic hybrid film without any further process (wet etching and thermal curing) is performed utilizing the volume contraction on UV-light irradiation.This film has potential applications for fabrication of patterned filter array and apodizing filter by direct light writing, and also demonstrates good temperature stability and immunity to visible light exposure.
Surface Topography and Optical Properties of Al-doped ZnO Thin Films by Sol-gel Process

Abstract:Surface topography,optical transmittance spectra and photoluminescence spectrum of Al-doped ZnO thin films,prepared by sol-gel method,were analyzed by atomic force microscope,UV-visible spectrophotometer and fluorescent spectrometry.Results show that roughness of the Al-doped ZnO thin film with the Al doping concentration 0.5at% annealed at 550 ℃ is 1.817,but that with the Al doping concentration 1.0at% annealed at 600 ℃ is 4.625.All films have an average optical transparency over 80% in the visible range.The samples have an UV luminescence at around 397 nm(3.13 eV) or a blue luminescence at around 443 nm(2.80 eV) when that were excited by using a 325 nm or a 360 nm ultraviolet light respectively.The mechanism of blue luminescence was discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, state of the art for luminescent films prepared by sol-gel process has been reviewed. The basic process and characteristics for the synthesis of luminescent films via sol-gel method, Characterization methods for the films and the current status for the development and application of luminescent films are discussed in the context, An elucidation has been made on the luminescent films classified by composition, including inorganic luminescent films and organic/inorganic hybrid luminescent films. The sol-gel derived luminescent films have found applications in the display devices for photoluminescence, electroluminescence, cathodoluminescence and field emission etc. Finally, the future development tendency for the luminescent films are forecasted.

Abstract:In the last years, important non-linear optical results on sol-gel and polymeric materials have been reported, with values comparable to those found in crystals. These new materials contain push-pull chromophores either incorporated as guest in a high Tg polymeric matrix (doped polymers) or grafted onto the polymeric matrix. These systems present several advantages; however they require significant improvement at the molecular level - by designing optimized chromophores with very large molecular figure of merit, specific to each application targeted. Besides, it was recently stated in polymers that the chromophore-chromophore electrostatic interactions, which are dependent of chromophore concentration, have a strong effect into their non-linear optical properties. This has not been explored at all in sol-gel systems. In this work, the sol-gel route was used to prepare hybrid organic-inorganic thin films with different NLO chromophores grafted into the skeleton matrix. Combining a molecular engineering strategy for getting a larger molecular figure of merit and by controlling the intermolecular dipole-dipole interactions through both: the tuning of the push-pull chromophore concentration and the control of TEOS (Tetraethoxysilane) concentration, we have obtained a r33 coefficient around 15 pm/V at 633 nm for the classical DR1 azo-chromophore and a r33 around 50 pm/V at 831 nm for a new optimized chromophore structure.

Abstract:Preparation process of sol-gel of ZnO-B2O3-SiO 2 was investigated, and the mechanism of conversion for sol to gel was discussed. Crystallization process of stiff gel was analyzed. The results showed that the conversion time for sol to gel gradually prolonged, and the appearance of gel transmuted from cloudy to clear and bright with the increase of SiO2/(ZnO+B2O3) ratio, while the crystallizing temperature of stiff gel was increased. The main crystalline phase was Zn2SiO4, a small ratio of quartz was also detected. The phase analysis and IR results indicated that B2O 3-SiO2 glass always existed in the samples both before and after being heat-treated. The SEM results showed that there were a lot of circle holes with size of 0.4 μm in the stiff gel after being heat-treated at 800°C.

Abstract:A new silica antireflective coating with improved hydrophobicity and optical stability in a vacuum is obtained by a two-step route. Firstly, silica sols are prepared with a sol-gel process, in which tetraethyl orthosilicate is utilized as a precursor. And by introduction of fluorine containing glycol into the sols, the porosity of silica particles and surface polarity of the coatings are decreased. Afterward, coatings are constructed with low surface roughness by modification of PMBA-PMMA. The coatings retain transmission of up to 99.6%, and laser damage threshold of about 50 J/cm2 at a wavelength of 532 nm (1-on-1, 10 ns).

Abstract:The sol–gel process has become a rapidly growing research area in materials science. A variety of materials prepared via sol–gel routes have shown unique properties and characteristics that are difficult to achieve using conventional methods. In recent years, tremendous progress in sol–gel R&D has been made not only in the world but also in China. Here, this review provides a retrospective overview of the sol–gel history in China and summarizes recent progress and applications of sol–gel research in Chinese universities, institutes, and industries. It highlights some of the recent developments published by Chinese researchers in the last 5 years, ranging from the sol–gel synthesis of nanomaterials, bulk materials, and functional coatings, to their applications in the fields of energy conversion, energy storage, photocatalysis, etc. It is evident that sol–gel technology nowadays in China has evolved into a vibrant research area both in academia and industry.

Abstract:Mesostructured and mesoporous materials are emerging as a new class of optical materials. For mesostructured materials (inorganic/surfactant composites), prepared using a one-step synthesis procedure where the inorganic/surfactant/optically active species coassemble, the unique architecture provided by the surfactant−inorganic phase separation allows for higher concentrations compared to traditional sol−gel glasses and protective packaging of uniform three-dimensional arrays of optical species. The corresponding regularly arranged pores found in mesoporous materials (inorganic only) provide a high surface area to better disperse optically active components and allow for rapid diffusion for optical sensor applications. In this review, we discuss recent research results on the techniques used to produce optically functionalized mesostructured and mesoporous materials and the characterization of the final composites.

The basic principle and ways of nanometer Al2O3 fabricated using sol-gel technique were introduced, and the factors affecting nanometer Al2O3 fabricated using sol-gel method were analyzed. The progress in research on nanometer Al2O3 and the application fields of nanometer Al2O3 were reviewed. The existing problems and the problems prospect for nanometer Al2O3 were pointed out.

Abstract:Transparent glass-ceramics have shown interesting optical properties for several photonic applications. In particular, compositions based on oxide glass matrices with fluoride crystals embedded inside, known as oxyfluoride glass-ceramics, have gained increasing interest in the last few decades. Melt-quenching is still the most used method to prepare these materials but sol-gel has been indicated as a suitable alternative. Many papers have been published since the end of the 1990s, when these materials were prepared by sol-gel for the first time, thus a review of the achievements obtained so far is necessary. In the first part of this paper, a review of transparent sol-gel glass-ceramics is made focusing mainly on oxyfluoride compositions. Many interesting optical results have been obtained but very little innovation of synthesis and processing is found with respect to pioneering papers published 20 years ago. In the second part we describe the improvements in synthesis and processing obtained by the authors during the last five years. The main achievements are the preparation of oxyfluoride glass-ceramics with a much higher fluoride crystal fraction, at least double that reported up to now, and the first synthesis of NaGdF₄ glass-ceramics. Moreover, a new SiO₂ precursor was introduced in the synthesis, allowing for a reduction in the treatment temperature and favoring hydroxyl group removal. Interesting optical properties demonstrated the incorporation of dopant ions in the fluoride crystals, thus obtaining crystal-like spectra along with higher efficiencies with respect to xerogels, and hence demonstrating that these materials are a suitable alternative for photonic applications.

Abstract:This study explores the fabrication of ZnO-SiO2 composite films on silicon substrates via a sol–gel method combined with spin-coating, followed by annealing at various temperatures. The research aims to enhance the UV emission and photoelectric properties of the films. XRD showed that the prepared ZnO sample has a hexagonal structure. SEM images revealed the formation of ZnO nanorods within a dense SiO2 substrate, ranging from 10 μm to 30 μm in length. Photoluminescent analysis showed that the film exhibited strong UV emission centered at 360 nm. The response time measurements indicated that the optimal photoresponse time was approximately 2.9 s. These results suggest the potential of ZnO-SiO2 films as efficient UV-emitting materials with high photoconductivity and a stably reproducible response under visible light, thereby laying the foundation for their application in advanced optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:The integration of organic components into inorganic silica systems through sol–gel synthesis has significantly expanded the potential applications of these materials by enhancing features such as transparency, crack resistance, flexibility, and the introduction of new functional groups. Understanding the influence of organic groups on the sol–gel process and exploring various approaches to crafting organic-inorganic hybrid (OIH) silica systems are essential endeavors. This review aims to provide a comprehensive guide, particularly targeted towards researchers new to OIH synthesis. It delineates the key parameters of the sol–gel process, presents five distinct synthesis strategies, and provides exemplary applications. Beyond traditional methods like co-condensation with organoalkoxysilanes and bridged-organoalkoxysilanes, alternative strategies are elucidated, including biopolymer functionalization, photopolymerization enabling 3D printing, and utilization of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS). Furthermore, recent literature exploration has uncovered promising optical applications for OIH materials. These materials serve as excellent hosts for luminophores due to their inherent transparency and the synergistic interactions between the organic functional groups and luminophores, which can enhance properties such as quantum yield, particularly with lanthanides, and even improve the photochromic performance of polyoxometalates. Consequently, OIH materials find extensive utilization in optical technologies, encompassing luminescent solar concentrators, light-emitting diodes, photochromism, random lasers, optical sensing, and various optical components, as we aim to demonstrate comprehensively herein.

Abstract:Neodymium oxide nanoparticles/TiO2/ORMOSIL composite sol-gel thin films have been prepared by combining an inverse microemulsion technique and the sol-gel technique at low temperature. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy have been used to characterize the size and structural properties of the neodymium oxide nanoparticles and composite thin films. Photoluminescence and up-conversion emission properties of these composite thin films deposited on silicon substrates have been studied. A relatively strong room-temperature photoluminescence emission at 1064 nm corresponding to the F-4(3/2)--> I-4(11/2) transitions from these composite thin films has been observed as a function of the heat treatment temperature. An intense up-conversion emission in violet (402nm corresponding to D-4(3/2)--> I-4(13/2) transitions) color from the composite thin, films baked at different temperatures upon excitation with a yellow light (587nm) has been observed. In addition to this violet emission, an UV emission at 372 nm and a weak blue emission at 468 nm have been obtained. The mechanism of the up-conversion emission has been explained by means of an energy level diagram. The lifetimes of the violet emissions have been measured.

Abstract:GeO2/organically modified silane (ormosils) organic-inorganic composite films containing azobenzene were prepared by combining sol-gel technology and spin coating method. Optical waveguide properties including the refractive index and thickness of the composite films were characterized by using a prism coupling instrument. Surface morphology and photochemical properties of the composite films were investigated by atomic force microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. Results indicate that the composite films have smooth and neat surface, and excellent optical waveguide performance. Photo-isomerization properties of the composite films were studied by using a UV–Vis spectrophotometer. Optical switching performance of the composite films was also studied under the alternating exposure of 365 nm ultraviolet light and 410 nm visible light. Finally, strip waveguides and microlens arrays were built in the composite films through a UV soft imprint technique. Based on the above results, we believe that the prepared composite films are promising candidates for micro-nano optics and photonic applications, which would allow directly integrating the optical data storage and optical switching devices onto a single chip.

Abstract:Amorphous aerogels with the microscopic nanoscale three-dimensional meshes provide superb platforms for investigating unique physicochemical properties. In order to enhance the physical, thermal and mechanical performances, one efficient and common approach is integrating diverse functional materials. Herein, we report a simple strategy to fabricate the amorphous silicon doped Y 2 O 3 aerogels with the post-gelation method under the N 2 /EtOH supercritical atmosphere. The impact of Si concentration on the nonlinear optical properties is investigated for the first time. The maximum modulation depth is 1.65 % with a saturation intensity of 0.78 MW cm −2 with the 1-ps laser excitation at 1590 nm. Finally, we incorporated the silicon-doped Y 2 O 3 aerogel based saturable absorber (SA) into an erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) and achieved various mode-locking operations at different wavelengths in the super C band, in terms of the conventional soliton, harmonic soliton molecules pulses, and dual-wavelength soliton mode-locking. Overall, this work confirms that amorphous silicon-doped Y 2 O 3 aerogels are good nonlinear optical materials and pave a way for the ultrafast photonic and nonlinear optical applications with amorphous materials in near future.
