Abstract:A novel resonant high voltage power supply (HVPS) with zero voltage switching (ZVS), to reduce the voltage stress on switching devices and improve conversion efficiency, is proposed. The proposed HVPS includes a drive circuit, a transformer, several voltage multiplying circuits, and a regulator circuit. The HVPS contains several secondary windings that can be precisely regulated. The proposed HVPS performed better than the traditional resistor voltage divider, which requires replacing matching resistors resulting in resistor dispersibility in the Micro-Channel Plate (MCP). The equivalent circuit of the proposed HVPS was established and the operational principle analyzed. The entire switching element can achieve ZVS, which was validated by a simulation and experiments. The properties of this HVPS were tested including minimum power loss (240mW), maximum power loss (1W) and conversion efficiency (85%). The results of this research are that the proposed HVPS was suitable for driving the micro-channel plate photomultiplier tube (MCP-PMT). It was therefore adopted to test the MCP-PMT, which will be used in Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment II in China.

Abstract:A micro-channel plate detector with wedge and strip anode can be used for visible and ultraviolet light imaging. In this paper, the imager electronics are designed in order to process specific output charge characteristics. The original signal output from the detector is shaped into a Gaussian pulse signal, and a digital Constant Fraction Discriminator is used to judge the arrival time of the pulse. The resolution of the electronic output image is 1024 x 1024, and the position decoding accuracy is 1 pixel. The experimental imaging resolving power of the detector is as high as 70 mu m.

Abstract:Microchannel plate photodetectors provide both picosecond time resolution and sub-millimeter position resolution, making them attractive photosensors for particle identification detectors of a future U.S. Electron Ion Collider. We have tested the rate capability and magnetic field tolerance of 6 × 6 cm2 microchannel plate photodetectors fabricated at Argonne National Laboratory. The microchannel plate photodetector is designed as a low-cost all-glass vacuum package with a chevron pair stack of next-generation microchannel plates functionalized by atomic layer deposition. The rate capability test was performed using Fermilab’s 120 GeV/c primary proton beam, and the magnetic field tolerance test was performed using a solenoid magnetic with tunable magnetic field strength up to 4 T. The measured gain of the microchannel plate photodetector is stable up to 75 kHz/cm2 and varies depending on the applied magnetic field strength and the rotation angle relative to the magnetic field direction.

Abstract:A dedicated single photoelectron spectrometer was developed to evaluate and demarcate the characteristics of the 8-inch micro-channel plate photo-multiplier tube (MCP-PMT), including but not limited to the gain and peak-to-valley voltage ratio (P/V) of a single photoelectron spectrum and uniformity of the photocathode. The analogue signal of charges was digitized with high precision charge-to-digital converter (QDC); the single photoelectron spectrum was obtained by integrating the digitized charge spectrum with VME data-acquisition software; and the photoelectron I-V flat curve at a specific point of the photocathode were evaluated with the current-sampling module of software LABVIEW. The results show that the gain and P/V ratio of the 8-inch MCP-PMT single photoelectron spectrum were 2.5233×107and above 2.78, respectively, under the operation conditions: a voltage of 2000 V, a pulse-width of 10 ns, a sampling-frequency of 1 kHz, and with LED light-source powered at 1.735 V. Moreover, the photocathode uniformity was estimated to be lower than 10%, satisfying the requirement for neutrino detection. ©, YYYY, Science Press. All right reserved.
Systematic approach to measure the performance of microchannel-plate photomultipliers

Abstract:In this paper, we present our approach to systematically measure numerous performance parameters of MCP-PMTs. The experimental setups, the analyses and selected results are discussed. Although the techniques used may be different in other locations, the document is intended as a guide for comparable measurements with other types of MCP-PMTs. Measurements are shown for the following performance parameters: spectral and spatial quantum efficiency, collection efficiency, gain as a function of voltage, position and magnetic field, time resolution, rate capability and lifetime. By using a dedicated 3-axis stepper and an FPGA-based DAQ system, also inner PMT parameters are measured as a function of the active area, such as relative detection efficiency, dark count rate, time resolution, recoil electron and afterpulse distributions, as well as charge sharing and electronic crosstalk. In addition, some of the parameters are investigated inside a strong magnetic field. For many of these measurements, the change of most setup parameters and the subsequent analysis can be controlled semi-automatically by software scripts.

Abstract:Owing to the severe loss of photoelectrons striking at the input electrode of conventional microchannel plate (MCP), photoelectron collection efficiency (CE) of devices based on traditional MCP fluctuates around the MCP open area ratio and cannot make a breakthrough. Photoelectron backscattering from the MCP surface also causes late pulses smearing timing and spatial performance. In this work, a novel bowl-shaped MCP with an open area ratio higher than 90% whose input electrode is coated by a thin film with high secondary electron emission yield (SEY) is proposed as an effective approach to improve CE and suppress late pulses. A three-dimensional MCP-PMT model is developed in CST Studio Suite to evaluate CE and time performance of the bowl-shaped MCP, and compared with the traditional one. Results show that CE of the PMT based on the bowl-shaped MCP is nearly 100% and the delayed pulse is less than 2%. This indicates that good temporal and spatial resolution can be achieved with the bowl-shaped MCP.

Abstract:With the continuous development of the micro-structure of gas detectors,many different new detection requirements have been proposed.For more stable working time,lower discharge rate with long term and high effective gain,a new structure detector has been designed.Combined with the detection's advantages of MicroMegas and gas electron multiplier(GEM),it is composed of a MicroMagas chamber with one GEM foil as preamplifier.In this paper,the structure of the detector and detection principle are presented in detail.Using a 55Fe X-ray radioactive source in the operation mixtures gas of argon and isobutene(Ar/Iso=95/5),the performances of the detector gain,discharge rate,energy resolution and stable working time are investigated.Compared with standard MicroMegas detectors with no GEM foil,our detector show that a stable working time could reach more than 30h of continuous work,the gain of the detector could exceed 106 and the discharge rate could be reduced by nearly 100 times at the same gain.

Abstract:In this paper, the detection efficiency of a large area neutron sensitive microchannel plate detector has been evaluated. A 6LiF/ZnS scintillator detector 65 mm in diameter and 0.32 mm in thickness, with product code, EJ426HD2, produced by Eljen Technology, was employed as the benchmark detector. The TOF spectra of these two detectors were simultaneously measured and the energy spectra were then deduced to calculate the detection efficiency curve of the nMCP detector. Tests show the detection efficiency@25.3 meV thermal neutrons is 34% for this nMCP detector.

Abstract:Microchannel plates (MCPs) are widely used as electron, ion, and X-ray detectors. The gain factor and time resolution of the MCP are strongly dependent on its operating and geometry parameters (applied voltage, length-to-diameter ratio, bias angle, and electrode penetration depth). Measurements about this dependence are sparse and do not cover the full range of the parameters. In this paper, 3-D single channel models are developed in computer simulation technology studio suit to systematically and comprehensively calculate the MCP gain and time resolution for various operating and geometry parameters. Furman secondaries electron emission model is employed in our simulation. Simulated result of the gain versus bias voltage is validated by the available experimental data. Finally, geometry parameters of L = 373.6 mu m, D = 10 mu m, h(in) = h(out) = 5 mu m, and theta = 12 degrees are proposed to optimize the MCP performances. Simulation results show that the gain, mean transit time, and transit time spread of the optimized MCP are expected to reach 128 012, 128 ps and 19 ps at the applied voltage of 1000 V.

Abstract:The microchannel plate photomultiplier tube (MCP-PMT) used in high energy physics experiments usually needs to be able to operate in strong magnetic fields. In this paper, a 3D MCP-PMT model is developed in CST studio suite to study the magnetic field up to 5 T effect on the photoelectrons traveling from the photocathode to the MCP. Results predict that a growing number of photoelectrons strike back to the photocathode with enhancing magnetic field, which not only decreases electron collection efficiency and gain, but also impairs the photocathode lifetime.

Abstract:We present a study of two di fferent sets of Micro-Channel Plates used for time and space resolved single particle detection. We investigate the eff ects of the gold coating and that of introducing an interplate voltage between the spatially separated plates. We fi nd that the gold coating increases the count rate of the detector and the pulse amplitude as previously reported for non-spatially resolved setups. The interplate voltage also increases count rates. In addition, we nd that a non-zero interplate voltage improves the spatial accuracy in determining the arrival position of incoming single particles (by 20%) while the gold coating has a negative e ect (by 30%).

Abstract:A Microchannel Plate（MCP） photon detector was developed to detect the 30.4 nm radiation in a plasma layer of the earth.By changing voltages,temperatures and other parameters,the variations of the dark noise and resolution for the MCP detector were compared.The results indicate that the dark noise of the detector comes from the ion feedback of residual gas and the thermal noises mainly.Therefore,to reduce the dark noise,the microchannel should be preprocessed by removing residual gases and the detector could not work at a high temperature state.After preprocessing at the room temperature,the dark noise counting rate of the detector has reduced to 0.34 count/s·cm2.Furthermore,the temperature has a little effect on the resolution of the detector,and the resolution dependents on the variances of voltage or counting rate obviously.With different resist pressure abilities for different MCPs,it demonstrates that the proper voltage or counting rate can provide a better resolution.

Abstract:A comprehensive performance evaluation system for Photomultiplier tubes has been built up. The system is able to review diverse cathode and anode properties for PMTs with different sizes and dimensions. Relative and direct methods were developed for the quantum efficiency measurement and the results are consistent with each other. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional scanning platforms were built to test both the cathode and anode uniformity for either the plane type or spherical type photocathode. A Flash Analog-to-Digital Convertor module is utilized to achieve high speed waveforms sampling. The entire system is highly automatic and flexible. Details of the system and some typical experimental results are presented in this paper.

Abstract:As a key component of electron multiplier device, a microchannel plate (MCP) can be applied in many scientific fields. Pure aluminum oxide (Al2O3) as secondary electron emission (SEE) layer were deposited in the pores of MCP via atomic layer deposition (ALD) to overcome problems such as high dark current and low lifetime which often occur on traditional MCP. In this paper, we systematically investigate the morphology, element distribution, and structure of samples by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy disperse spectroscopy (EDS), respectively. Output current of different thickness of Al2O3 was studied and an optimal thickness was found. Experimental tests show that the average gain of ALD-MCP was nearly five times better than that of traditional MCP, and the ALD-MCP showed better sensitivity and longer lifetime.

Abstract:Neutron sensitive microchannel plates ((MCP)-M-n), as key components of image intensifier based neutron energy selective imaging systems, have played major roles in the neutron energy selective imaging and have been applied in many areas for its high detection efficiency and superb spatial resolution. Doping microchannel plate with neutron sensitive nuclides, proposed by G.W. Fraser et al., is a typical method to make normal MCP become neutron sensitive. Inspired by this approach, microchannel plates doped with 3 mol% (Gd2O3)-Gd-nat have been developed in this study, both in 50 mm and 106 mm diameter. Experimental results showed the neutron detection efficiency@25.3 meV was 34%, with the spatial resolution of 64 mu m and 88 mu m for 15 kV X-rays and 25.3 meV neutrons, respectively. Both the detection efficiency and spatial resolution are intrinsically determined by the internal processes occurring in the (MCP)-M-n, such as the neutron absorption, IC electron emission and ionization, the electron multiplication and the electron cloud collection, all of which will somehow determine the performance of the (MCP)-M-n detector. This paper aims to thoroughly describe these processes and investigate their influences on the detection efficiency and spatial resolution of the (MCP)-M-n detector.

Abstract:An event-counting thermal neutron imaging detector based on 3 mol%natGd2O3-doped micro-channel plate（MCP）has been developed and tested.A thermal neutron imaging experiment was carried out with a low flux neutron beam.Detection efficiency of 33%was achieved with only one doped MCP.The spatial resolution of 72μm RMS is currently limited by the readout anode.A detector with larger area and improved readout method is now being developed.

Abstract:The principle and the structure of two-dimension position sensitive detector with delay-line anode are described in this paper. A detector with effective area of 70mm diameter is obtained. The position resolution and the position response of the detector are examined by using a radiative source and 0.1mm resolution is achieved. Further optimization for running the detector is discussed as well.
