Abstract:This paper describes the mechanism and distribution of roll wear on hot strip rolling mill, including some factors effecting on roll wear and the problems in some roll wear prediction models. Suggestions for improvement are put forward.

Abstract:In the process of hot rolling silicon steel, roll wear directly affect its shape. Accurate prediction of roll wear is an important condition for rolling qualified silicon steel strips. The traditional roll wear prediction model is established by the slicing method. The wear of F5–F7 work rolls used for finishing rolling silicon steel on a 2250 mm production line in a steel mill was predicted by this model. It was found that there was deviation between the predicted results and the actual wear, and the prediction accuracy of the model was insufficient. Therefore, the wear of the surfaces of the rolls used for rolling silicon steel on this production line was studied. Based on the analysis of the work roll wear's form and the rolling parameters that affect the roll wear, the traditional roll wear prediction model was optimized by the genetic algorithm. Finally, the optimized model was verified, and the prediction accuracy of the wear prediction model improved. The accurate prediction results provide a basis for the formulation of a shape control strategy when rolling silicon steel on this production line.

Abstract:The rolls wear of finishing strain of 4-high hot rolling mill is studied in this paper.Besides the length of rolling strip,the transverse distribution of rolling pressure and pressure between rolls,the lateral flow of metal,the influences of the deviation of strip form rolling center line,and the influence of CVC work roll curve to roll wear have to be considered,Based on sufficient experimental data,a theoretical calculating model of bakc-up roll wear and work roll wear were set up for the first time.The calculating results of bakc-up roll wear and work-up roll wear have good agreement with experiment data.The preseut study has important referential value to the study of roll wear of other kinds of mills.

Abstract:As a crucial component of the hot-rolling process, the research on the surface thermodynamics and wear behavior of descaling rollers has been insufficient, which seriously restricts the improvement of steel billet quality and service life. This study employs ABAQUS software to examine the thermodynamic behavior and wear characteristics of the descaling roll surface. The arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) adaptive mesh technique has been used innovatively to quantify the wear on the descaling roll surface. The findings reveal that the temperature, thermal stress, contact pressure, and wear depth at the contact edge between the descaling roll and the slab are higher compared to those at the center of the roll body. The peak area exhibits symmetry along the central of the roll body. Over time, there is a gradual increase in wear depth, and the position of the peak area gradually shifts towards the central of the roll body. As the slab velocity increased from 1 m/s to 2 m/s, the roll surface temperature, thermal stress, contact pressure, and maximum wear depth decreased by 13

Abstract:<p>This paper presents a novel three-dimensional characterisation of the wear effects of a roll surface on the texture transfer in skin-pass rolling. The method integrates the interactions of the microscale elastic deformation of roll surface asperities with the microscale plastic deformation of strip surface asperities. An elasticity theory and a discrete fast Fourier transform were used to rationally predict the microscale elastic deformation of work roll in the rolling system. The microscale plastic deformation of the asperities on the soft strip surface was calculated by the material redistribution process. The Archard wear law was used to consider the wear effects with the random contact pressure, relative sliding and surface hardness. A multiscale analysis was carried out by the dynamic explicit finite element method (FEM), which fully coupled microscale surface contacts, macroscale elastic deformation of the work roll and the bulk plastic deformation of the metal strip. Due to the complexity associated with numerical simulation, a novel modularised approach was established to complete the calculation in a feasible and efficient manner. The study reveals that the roughness scale of a rolled metal strip decreases gradually due to the roll surface wear and that the rolling force, relative sliding and rolling speed at the roll-strip interface significantly affect the roll surface wear. It is expected that the method established can be used to control the surface texture transfer in skin-pass rolling under the continuous wear of roll surfaces.</p>

Abstract:This paper is based on the hot rolling process on stainless steels. The aim of this article is to characterize the wear of working cylinders during the hot rolling milling process. The behavior of working cylinders, used in a finishing hot rolling mill, is thus analyzed. Because of their large dimensions, the analysis of such tools cannot be carried out with usual laboratory equipment. A non-destructive methodology is proposed using replicas to measure the topography of the working cylinders. Then, two wear processes are distinguished thanks to multi-scale analysis of different roughness parameters i.e. an adhesive wear process and an abrasive wear process. A wear criterion has been defined in order to determine the maximal length of the rolling campaigns before grinding.

Abstract:Considering the insufficient recrystallization of austenite has an effect on deformation resistance, meanwhile, referring to the plate of controlling parameters in the hot rolling process, analysis and forecast of load parameters of rolling mill and motor per pass of its rolling process. The result shows that: The production of modern steel rolling, involved in the process, equipment problems associated with rolling load, must be taken into account in its internal organization of metal in the deformation process. The less recrystallization is, the greater the deviation of the calculated results. This should be distinguished from the traditional concept of rolling.

Abstract:During the hot rolling process, the work rolls suffer severe wear, resulting in a relatively short lifespan. Severe roll wear can adversely affect the strip shape while introducing roll wear into the crown calculation model can enhance the model accuracy. Therefore, it is crucial to quantify roll wear during the rolling process. Roll wear is a nonlinear time series and the accuracy of the existing work roll wear mechanistic models is not high. In this paper, a novel prediction model for work roll wear based on TCN-LSTM-Attention is developed. TCN utilizes convolutional structures of local and global information to extract data features, while LSTM focuses on capturing long-term and more complex sequence patterns, effectively handling nonlinear characteristics in data. With the incorporation of attention mechanisms, the model becomes more adept at effectively capturing relationships among different segments within the input sequence, which significantly improves predictive performance and reduces the risk of overfitting. Firstly, outlier cleaning and feature selection are performed using Boruta to construct the data set. Then, the predicted results of the proposed model are compared with the existing time series prediction models. The results indicate that the TCN-LSTM-Attention has the highest prediction accuracy, with an R 2 of 0.989 and an RMSE of 0.0082 μm. Finally, the predicted results of work roll wear are combined with the mechanism to correct the strip crown pre-calculation model, which significantly improves the calculation accuracy.

Abstract:To solve the flatness problem in the production of hot wide strip temper mill with small-diameter work rolls, a finite element model of roll-strip coupling is established and the model accuracy is verified by comparison with the measured data. By calculating the contact pressure between rolls and the loaded roll gap profile, the effects of process parameters on the flatness adjusting are analysed. When adopting the positive bending force or increasing bending force to improve the edge wave, the strip is prone to the secondary defect of quarter buckle, especially for wide strips. To reduce the high-order deflection of the slender work roll and reduce the generation of quarter buckle, the temper mill should not use smaller rolling force. By optimising the back-up roll contour and the rolling force, the flatness adjusting performance of Handan Steel's hot temper mill was improved, and the flatness defective rate was reduced.

Abstract:Theoretical predictions and engineering practice indicate that roll crossing in strip mills can generate an excessive axial thrust force between rolls, often resulting in roll bearing failures and a lower strip surface quality. Although this effect is important in design of strip mills and manufacturing, the existing literature refers only to simple formulas and manual measurements for evaluating this axial thrust force. In this work, a novel approach to model the axial thrust force considering tangential deformations of the rough surface layer and the matrix is proposed to calculate the axial thrust force for various typical strip mills. In addition, data from an industrial test rig at the production site taken to examine the real-time axial thrust force during roll crossing. The results indicate that under light load conditions, the axial thrust force can be accurately predicted by considering only the tangential deformation of the rough layer surface, whereas for heavy loads conditions, the tangential elastic deformation of the matrix must be taken into account as well. The axial thrust force approaches sliding friction force limit for crossover angles smaller than 0.1°. In general, the axial thrust force grows with increasing crossover angle, which is confirmed by both theoretical and experimental results.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">With the rapid development of rail vehicles, 301L strip has become the main material of the rail vehicles, and its flatness quality has got much attention. Meanwhile, 20-roll mill becomes the most important cold rolling equipment for 301L strip forming, because of its high precision and wide application. To study the flatness control theory of cold rolling 301L strip in 20-roll mill, a finite element model is established based on elastoplastic theory. The stress–strain field is used to characterize the strip flatness under different rolling parameters. After analysis, the results show that the front and back tension have the most obvious effects on strip flatness. The friction coefficient and rolling speed are beneficial to the control of the strip flatness when they increase within a certain range.</p>

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this study is to explain the effect of slab and roll initial temperatures on the wear characteristics of the surface of hot roll descaling rolls. Design/methodology/approach The UMESHMOTION subroutine and the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian adaptive mesh technique are used to investigate the wear profile of the descale roll surface and to evaluate the effect of the slab and roll's initial temperature on the wear depth. Findings Wear is more pronounced at the edges of the roll-slab contact area and less severe in the roll-body's central region. A rise in the initial slab temperature from 1,337 K to 1,429 K results in a 67% rise in maximum wear depth and 52% in frictional stress. The peak wear region progressively shifted toward the center of the roll body. A rise in the initial roll temperature from 308.15 K to 673.15 K caused a 46% reduction in maximum wear depth and 73% in frictional stress. The location of the peak wear region remained primarily unchanged. Originality/value This study used the UMESHMOTIONI subroutine and the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian adaptive mesh technique in ABAQUS® to evaluate the quantitative correlation between the wear depth of the descaling roll surfaces and the initial temperatures of the slab and rolls. This study offers valuable insights into improving the wear of descaling roll surfaces. Abstract:Addressing the challenge of roll loss and strip deformation arising from the lack of precise prediction of the roll temperature field in hot tandem rolling mills, this study employs numerical analysis via the finite difference method. Based on the roll temperature field and hot roll crown model, an intelligent support cooling control system for the roll cooling water of hot rolls is established. This system comprehensively considers the direct impact of specific parameters on the roll temperature field in the intricate context of cooling water dynamics. The study focuses on the cyclic superposition effect of rolling coil quantities on the roll temperature field and the resulting hot roll shape, and theoretical calculations along with simulation analyses were conducted using finite element software. Through the integration of field-measured values, the study achieves accurate predictions of the temperature field and hot roll profile for both work rolls and backup rolls.

Abstract:Work rolls used for hot strip rolling undergo the cyclic sequence of heating-cooling over the roll surface due to contact with the hot strip and the following cooling systems during every rolling revolution. Severe temperature gradient and thermal stress caused by cyclic heating-cooling loading are dominant factors for thermal fatigue failure of work rolls. Therefore, investigations on temperature and thermal stress-strain are essential for understanding the thermal fatigue of work roll. In this study, a thermo-mechanical analysis with elastic-plastic material parameters via a simplified finite element model is carried out to compute the stress-strain range experienced by the work roll during rolling and idling. Then, a model with the initial crack in the roll surface considering different depths and a model with the hot strip is conducted to better understand the thermal behaviors of the work roll during hot rolling respectively. Furthermore, the thermal fatigue life of work roll is assessed based on the modified Coffin-Manson relation, considering the effect of multi-axial stress state and temperature-dependent material properties caused by temperature fluctuations in work roll during hot rolling.

Abstract:Microstructural evolution during hot rolling, which is complex and unperceptive but has direct effects on rolling forces, determines the final microstructure and mechanical properties of steel products. In this paper, a comprehensive set of machine learning (ML) models was developed through rolling forces to reveal the evolutions of recrystallization and grain size of austenite, in which the grain size was estimated by considering the grain shape effect after each rolling pass. By using the backpropagation neural network (BPNN) and genetic algorithm (GA) combined with industrial data, the quantitative connections of parameters in the models for static recrystallization (SRX), meta-dynamic recrystallization (MDRX), and mean flow stress (MFS) were established with steel chemical compositions and deformation conditions. Through the machine learning (ML) approach, softening kinetics and rolling forces can be more accurately predicted than traditional models. Also, the recrystallization behavior and evolution of austenite grain size during hot rolling were analyzed by using the proposed ML models, which are consistent with experimental results.

Abstract:The wear of backup rolls will have a great impact on the quality of the shape of hot rolled strip sheet. In order to overcome the limitations of the finite element method (FEM) in calculating backup roll wear in terms of efficiency and accuracy, this paper proposes a tandem FEM + ML hybrid model to optimise the predictive effect of the finite element method (FEM) on backup roll wear. Firstly, a backup roll wear model based on FEM is established. Secondly, in order to select the optimal machine learning (ML) algorithm as the finite element error compensation model, three types of finite element error compensation models were established based on the random forest (RF) algorithm, the radial basis function (RBF) neural network algorithm, and the particle swarm optimisation support vector machine (PSO-SVM) algorithm. Finally, the three types of finite element error compensation models were connected in series with the FEM model to compare the prediction performance of the three types of FEM + ML models on backup roll wear. The numerical experimental results show that the FEM + PSO-SVM model can better predict the wear of the backup roll, and the PSO-SVM algorithm is the most suitable for building the finite element error compensation model. It is proved that the FEM + ML model proposed in this paper can effectively improve the accuracy and computational efficiency of the FEM model for predicting backup roll wear without adding microelements. In addition, among the hot rolling parameters, the rolling force has the greatest influence on the backup roll wear, and excessive rolling force for a single pass should be avoided to slow down the backup roll wear.

Abstract:A rolling force model of continuous cold rolling mill based on elastic and plastic mechanics was developed and successfully applied in the control system of a 1420 mm cold rolling mill in Baosteel. Considering simplicity and practicability of calculation, stress of elastic zone and plastic zone during the cold rolling process was calculated and analyzed by incorporated simple finite element method and recursive calculating method. Compared with the measured rolling force, the results of the rolling force model are beyond 96.5%. A method for optimizing rolling force by improving reduction, dimension, coefficient of friction, deformation and tension is put forward.

Abstract:In the process of copper alloy hot continuous rolling, the problem of copper sticking to the roller seriously affects the surface quality, performance, and service life of the copper products. Roll sticking occurs as the adhesion energy of Cu is lower than that of Fe and the Fe-Cu interface, and the severe surface deformation which forces the copper into direct contact with the roll during the process of profile rolling. Based on the copper deformation law and adhesion phenomenon in the hot continuous rolling process, a rolling deformation model and roll copper adhesion model or copper alloy hot continuous rolling were established, and their simulation was realized using finite element software. Through finite element modeling of the hot rolling deformation zone, the distribution of the temperature, contact normal stress, and exposure rate in the hot rolling deformation zone were obtained, which were consistent with the actual roll adhesion phenomenon and copper adhesion position. To address the copper sticking behavior of the rolls, the process optimization method of matching the motor speed with the elongation coefficient (the 1# and 2# motor speeds were adjusted to 1549 r/min and 1586 r/min, respectively), adjusting the roll gap to 7.9 mm, and increasing the number and pressure of roll spray nozzles were put forward, which effectively solved the problem of copper sticking to the roll, significantly improved the surface quality of the copper and the service life of the roll, and can be used in production.
