Abstract:Gradient microstructure design has been found to be an effective approach to significantly produce the utmost advanced structural metallic materials, which have a signature in mechanical characteristic of strength-ductility-hardenability combination. In this work, a physical theory and mechanism-based numerical model are developed for sophisticatedly designing the gradient microstructured metals. It considers the gradient distribution of grain size, twin, martensite and austenite in a metallic alloy. The numerical results are validated through experiments. The mechanical performance of high strength, large ductility and considerable hardenability is achieved and their trade-off is successfully overcome. (C) 2020 Acta Materialia Inc. Abstract:During structural alloy development, the initial microstructure design is mainly considered in the context of achieving a balance of mechanical properties, with corrosion resistance often considered much later in the process. This perspective uses illustrations from degradation mechanisms in 3D-printed alloys and in-service microstructure evolution-driven mechanisms to show the importance of microstructure design for corrosion resistance and mechanical properties simultaneously, to improve the reliability of critical infrastructure.

Abstract:Nowadays, most structural integrity concepts rely on simplified isotropic ma-terial data that are used within continuum mechanics modeling approaches. In contrast, modern casting and forming processes yield complex microstruc-tures coming along with pronounced gradients in the material's properties in various length scales. By means of additive manufacturing. bionics-inspired structures can be perfectly adapted to the space-resolved load distribution. Specific temperature control during solidification or heat treatment allow for usage of anisotropy and precipitation effects for materials optimization down to the atomic length scale. The present paper shows the significance and practical application of a three-dimensional correlation between the material's microstructure and its technical properties.

Abstract:Many emerging applications in microscale engineering rely on the fabrication of three-dimensional architectures in inorganic materials. Small-scale additive manufacturing (AM) aspires to provide flexible and facile access to these geometries. Yet, the synthesis of device-grade inorganic materials is still a key challenge towards the implementation of AM in microfabrication. Here, we present a comprehensive overview of the microstructural and mechanical properties of metals fabricated by most state-of-the-art AM methods that offer a spatial resolution $\leq$10$\mu$m. Standardized sets of samples were studied by cross-sectional electron microscopy, nanoindentation and microcompression. We show that current microscale AM techniques synthesize metals with a wide range of microstructures and elastic and plastic properties, including materials of dense and crystalline microstructure with excellent mechanical properties that compare well to those of thin-film nanocrystalline materials. The large variation in materials performance can be related to the individual microstructure, which in turn is coupled to the various physico-chemical principles exploited by the different printing methods. The study provides practical guidelines for users of small-scale additive methods and establishes a baseline for the future optimization of the properties of printed metallic objects $-$ a significant step towards the potential establishment of AM techniques in microfabrication.

Recent Electron Microscopy Results on Micro- and Nanostructured Ni-Ti-(X) Shape Memory Alloys

Abstract:The present contribution will focus on recent advanced transmission electron microscopy studies of Ni-Ti based alloys with the emphasis on features related to the martensitic transformation. The examples range from the atomic scale when looking at the atomic structure of a precipitate to the micron scale when looking at the configuration of these precipitates or to twin configurations in particular ternary alloys. An example of the first is the refinement of the atomic structure of a Ni4Ti3 precipitate formed in Ni-rich Ni-Ti alloys to enhance the shape memory behaviour. A slice-and-view study to obtain the 3D configuration of these precipitates is an example of the latter. Some other examples will be discussed as well.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, is a process where a part is produced layer by layer, and represents a promising approach for designing components close to their final shape. Titanium alloys produced by additive manufacturing find application in various industries. This overview examines the features of the formation of the microstructure and properties in Ti alloys synthesized with the use of powder and wire laser additive technologies, as well as solid-phase methods of additive manufacturing such as friction stir additive manufacturing. Their main drawbacks and advantages are discussed, as applied to Ti alloys. The main approaches to solving the problem of increasing the strength properties of the synthesized Ti workpieces are considered. The authors of this overview propose a new area of research in the field of the application of additive technologies for producing ultrafine-grained Ti semi-products and parts with enhanced performance characteristics. Research in this area opens up prospects for designing heavily loaded complex-profile products for the aerospace, oil and gas, and biomedical industries.

Abstract:Abstract With the ability to locate and identify atoms in three dimensions, atom-probe tomography (APT) has revolutionized our understanding of structure-property relationships in materials used for structural applications. The atomic-scale details of clusters, second phases, and microstructural defects that control alloy properties have been investigated, providing an unprecedented level of detail on the origins of aging behavior, strength, creep, fracture toughness, corrosion, and irradiation resistance. Moreover, atomic-scale microscopy combined with atomistic simulation and theoretical modeling of material behavior can guide new alloy design. In this article, selected examples highlight how APT has led to a deeper understanding of materials structures and therefore properties, starting with the phase transformations controlling the aging and strengthening behavior of complex Al-, Fe-, and Ni-based alloys systems. The chemistry of interfaces and structural defects that play a crucial role in high-temperature strengthening, fracture, and corrosion resistance are also discussed, with particular reference to Zr- and Al-alloys and FeAl intermetallics.

Abstract:Predictions of the mechanical response of nanocrystalline metals and underlying microstructure evolution and deformation mechanisms are critically important for the manufacturing and design of new advanced structural metals that aim to outperform those in use today. In this chapter, recent advancements in modeling processing-microstructure-property relationships of nanocrystalline metals are covered. These developments include linking mesoscopic microstructure, such as grain (orientation, size, and shape), grain boundaries, twin boundaries, and interface properties with the development of local stress states and deformation mechanisms during mechanical processing or straining. Many recent examples of these techniques are discussed, particularly those demonstrating unanticipated couplings between size effects and texture development. The chapter concludes with a discussion of recommended directions and associated challenges to further advance mesoscale modeling efforts.

Abstract:While there is considerable interest in additive manufacturing of alloys and their resulting properties, the 'bottom up' approach of fabricating components—point by point, line by line, and layer by layer, offers a new tool for micro- and meso‐ structure control that has not yet been fully exploited by alloy designers. The mesostructures, which can be manipulated either through the choice of the processing parameters when prealloyed powders are used, or by using mixed powders ('in situ alloying'), can be used to improve the overall mechanical performance of the printed part. Whilst the microstructures can be tailored to enhance strength, the mesostructures can be designed to improve the fracture toughness and other damage tolerance properties. These aspects are highlighted in this viewpoint paper.

Abstract:Predicting the structural response of advanced multiphase alloys and understanding the underlying microscopic mechanisms that are responsible for it are two critically important roles modeling plays in alloy development. An alloys demonstration of superior properties, such as high strength, creep resistance, high ductility, and fracture toughness, is not sufficient to secure its use in widespread application. Still, a good model is needed, to take measurable alloy properties, such as microstructure and chemical composition, and forecast how the alloy will perform in specified mechanical deformation conditions, including temperature, time, and rate. In this bulletin, we highlight recent achievements by multiscale modeling in elucidating the coupled effects of alloying, microstructure, and the dynamics of mechanisms on the mechanical properties of polycrystalline alloys. Much of the understanding gained by these efforts relied on integration of computational tools that varied over many length and time scales, from first principles density functional theory, atomistic simulation methods, dislocation and defect theory, micromechanics, phase field modeling, single crystal plasticity, and polycrystalline plasticity.
