Abstract:Heterogeneous-structured materials are a new class of metallic materials that have recently emerged due to development of advanced processing and structural/architectural design techniques. These materials are made of heterogeneous domains having different constitutive behaviors and achieve superior mechanical properties, such as extra strengthening and work hardening, that are not accessible to conventional homogeneous-structured materials. Here we review recent experimental, theoretical and computational studies on microstructures, mechanical properties and deformation behaviors of heterogeneous-structured metals/alloys, highlighting the relationships between structural heterogeneity and mechanical property improvements, as well as some perspectives towards achieving fundamental understanding of plastic deformation based on strain gradient theory.

Abstract:Abstract With the ability to locate and identify atoms in three dimensions, atom-probe tomography (APT) has revolutionized our understanding of structure-property relationships in materials used for structural applications. The atomic-scale details of clusters, second phases, and microstructural defects that control alloy properties have been investigated, providing an unprecedented level of detail on the origins of aging behavior, strength, creep, fracture toughness, corrosion, and irradiation resistance. Moreover, atomic-scale microscopy combined with atomistic simulation and theoretical modeling of material behavior can guide new alloy design. In this article, selected examples highlight how APT has led to a deeper understanding of materials structures and therefore properties, starting with the phase transformations controlling the aging and strengthening behavior of complex Al-, Fe-, and Ni-based alloys systems. The chemistry of interfaces and structural defects that play a crucial role in high-temperature strengthening, fracture, and corrosion resistance are also discussed, with particular reference to Zr- and Al-alloys and FeAl intermetallics.

Abstract:Phase-field method (PFM) has become a mainstream computational method for predicting the evolution of nano and mesoscopic microstructures and properties during materials processes. The paper briefly reviews latest progresses in applying PFM to understanding the thermodynamic driving forces and mechanisms underlying microstructure evolution in metallic materials and related processes, including casting, aging, deformation, additive manufacturing, and defects, etc. Focus on designing alloys by integrating PFM with constitutive relations and machine learning. Several examples are presented to demonstrate the potential of integrated PFM in discovering new multi-scale phenomena and high-performance alloys. The article ends with prospects for promising research directions.

Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of a L12-structured Precipitation Strengthened Co-based Superalloy

Abstract:A L1(2)-structured precipitation (gamma') strengthened Co-based superalloy is identified based on thermodynamic calculation and experimental validation. An alloy with composition of Co9Al5Mo30Ni2Ta10Cr is fabricated to explore the relationships among processing, mi-crostructures and mechanical properties. Typical gamma/gamma' two-phase microstructures have been obtained after heat treatments, where the spherical gamma' phase with diameter of similar to 100 nm is uniformly distributed in the face centered cubic (FCC) matrix. The L1(2) structured gamma'-(Ni, Co)(3)(Al, Ta) phase can be stabilized, which coherently precipitates in the FCC matrix (gamma) during aging treatment. The alloy exhibits promising strength with comparison to traditional Co-based superalloys at a temperature range from room temperature (RT) to 1000 degrees C. The predominant deformation mechanism transits from shearing of dislocation pairs to dislocations bypassing gamma' phase when deformation temperature increases from RT to 1000 degrees C. Abstract:Amorphous alloys have attracted the great attention owing to their distinctive properties deriving from unique packing structures. Recently, the significant advances have been achieved for the understanding of structural characteristics and the functional applications of amorphous alloys. In this review, we present an overview of the state of art of structure studies accounting for the characteristics of amorphous alloys, and highlight the recent progresses in functional applications of amorphous alloys. The various structural models for the short‐range order, medium‐range order and long‐range topological order for amorphous alloys are introduced. The functional applications in electrochemistry, mechanism, magnetism, optics, and biomedical engineering are presented in details. Abstract:Predicting the structural response of advanced multiphase alloys and understanding the underlying microscopic mechanisms that are responsible for it are two critically important roles modeling plays in alloy development. An alloys demonstration of superior properties, such as high strength, creep resistance, high ductility, and fracture toughness, is not sufficient to secure its use in widespread application. Still, a good model is needed, to take measurable alloy properties, such as microstructure and chemical composition, and forecast how the alloy will perform in specified mechanical deformation conditions, including temperature, time, and rate. In this bulletin, we highlight recent achievements by multiscale modeling in elucidating the coupled effects of alloying, microstructure, and the dynamics of mechanisms on the mechanical properties of polycrystalline alloys. Much of the understanding gained by these efforts relied on integration of computational tools that varied over many length and time scales, from first principles density functional theory, atomistic simulation methods, dislocation and defect theory, micromechanics, phase field modeling, single crystal plasticity, and polycrystalline plasticity.

Abstract:Phase transformation is one of the most effective methods to tailor microstructure of steels. In order to develop high performance steels, microstructure has to be precisely tuned, which requires a deep understanding of phase transformation. The austenite to ferrite transformation in steels has been of great interest for several decades due to its considerable importance in the processing of modern high performance steels, and it has been investigated from various aspects. Mechanism of interface migration and alloying elements partitioning during the austenite to ferrite transformation was regarded as one of the most significant and challenging topics in the field. This paper briefly summarized the recent progress in the understanding of this topic from both theoretical and experimental perspectives, and would also provide discussions and outlook of the unresolved issues.

Abstract:The design of novel ultra high strength steels for aerospace applications is subjected to stringent requirements to ensure their performance. Such requirements include the ability to withstand high loads in corrosive environments subjected to temperature variations and cyclic loading. Achieving the desired performance demands microstructural control at various scales; e.g. fine lath martensite is desired in combination with nanoprecipitate networks at specified volume fractions, and controlled concentrations of alloying elements to prevent alloy embrittlement. The design for a specified microstructure cannot be separated from the processing route required for its fabrication. Alloys displaying exceptional properties are subjected to complex interactions between microstructure and processing requirements, which can be described in terms of evolutionary principles. The present work shows how genetic alloy design principles have been utilised for designing stainless steels displaying strength exceeding that of commercial counterparts. Such designed alloys become feasible for fabrication by tailoring their microstructure employing thermodynamic and kinetic principles, while fracture toughness properties can be controlled via performing quantum mechanical cohesion energy computations.
Creating a Microstructure Latent Space with Rich Material Information for Multiphase Alloy Design

Abstract:The intricate microstructure serves as the cornerstone for the composition/processing-structure-property (CPSP) connection in multiphase alloys. Traditional alloy design methods often overlook microstructural details, which diminishes the reliability and effectiveness of the outcomes. This study introduces an improved alloy design algorithm that integrates authentic microstructural information to establish precise CPSP relationships. The approach utilizes a deep-learning framework based on a variational autoencoder to map real microstructural data to a latent space, enabling the prediction of composition, processing steps, and material properties from the latent space vector. By integrating this deep learning model with a specific sampling strategy in the latent space, a novel, microstructure-centered algorithm for multiphase alloy design is developed. This algorithm is demonstrated through the design of a unified dual-phase steel, and the results are assessed at three performance levels. Moreover, an exploration into the latent vector space of the model highlights its seamless interpolation ability and its rich material information content. Notably, the current configuration of the latent space is particularly advantageous for alloy design, offering an exhaustive representation of microstructure, composition, processing, and property variations essential for multiphase alloys.

Recent progress in the simulation of microstructure evolution in titanium alloys

Abstract:Titanium alloys (Ti-alloys) have complicated multiscale hierarchical structures that enabled a variety of excellent mechanical properties, such as strength, ductility, fatigue and creep resistance etc. But how are the microstructures formed under different conditions, and what are the inter-dependencies between the properties and various microstructures are not easy to reveal solely by experiments. In the last two decades, multiscale modeling and simulation have been carried out, and promoted our understanding of the microstructure formation and their deformation mechanisms. In the present paper, recent progresses are reviewed and future trends analyzed, on the simulation of microstructure evolution in Ti-alloys and how these are combined with experimental characterization and verification, to reveal the controlling factor and hidden mechanism under various deformation/transformation conditions; and to promote the optimization of thermo-mechanical processing. It is recognized that, future computations should pay more attention to the bottleneck problems in the design and application of Ti-alloys and play a more important role in identifying specific controlling factors and revealing the relevant working mechanisms in more complicated process, such as thermo-mechanical processing, powder metallurgy or additive manufacturing. In addition, artificial intelligence (AI) may assist the screening of new materials. These efforts may accelerate the development and application of new alloys, and at lower cost, especially for Ti-alloys in aero/space engine satisfying multiple performance requirements such as strength, toughness, creep resistance, fatigue life and other properties.

Abstract:Gradient structures found in biological materials have served as a source of inspiration for scientists seeking to enhance the performance of metals and alloys over the past decades. These gradient-structured metals and alloys have manifested themselves with unprecedented mechanical properties as compared to their homogeneous counterparts, including superior strength–ductility synergy, high fracture toughness, and enhanced resistance to fatigue, wear, and corrosion. This review is devoted to providing a critical evaluation of the up-to-date research on gradient-structured metals and alloys, including the emerging fabrication techniques and fundamental mechanisms contributing to their strengthening, strain hardening, and ductility. We also provide a comprehensive of the mechanical properties of metals and alloys with structural gradients from experimental, theoretical, and modeling perspectives, as well as design strategies to tailor the properties. Finally, the potential applications and prospects of designing gradient-structured metals and alloys are discussed.

Abstract:Advanced structural materials with superior mechanical properties are of technological importance for industrial applications. Multicomponent precipitation provides a potential approach for designing high-performance alloys and has been receiving increasing attention from both academia and industry. In this Perspective, we highlight the recent advances and future perspectives in multicomponent-precipitation-strengthened alloys, including multicomponent steels, superalloys, and high-entropy alloys. The emphasis is placed on the unique microstructural features and challenges of multicomponent precipitation as well as their impacts on the strengthening behavior. Finally, future research areas for this class of materials are critically discussed.

Abstract:While there is considerable interest in additive manufacturing of alloys and their resulting properties, the 'bottom up' approach of fabricating components—point by point, line by line, and layer by layer, offers a new tool for micro- and meso‐ structure control that has not yet been fully exploited by alloy designers. The mesostructures, which can be manipulated either through the choice of the processing parameters when prealloyed powders are used, or by using mixed powders ('in situ alloying'), can be used to improve the overall mechanical performance of the printed part. Whilst the microstructures can be tailored to enhance strength, the mesostructures can be designed to improve the fracture toughness and other damage tolerance properties. These aspects are highlighted in this viewpoint paper.

Abstract:Abstract Structural alloys applied at high temperatures rely on an external dense layer of oxide scale for protection. As some reactive alloy components are selectively oxidized internally, understanding how these dispersed metal oxide particles reach the surface to form a protective scale—the so-called internal to external oxidation transition—is crucial for designing these alloys. While the literature is replete with experimental studies on oxidation of alloys, there is a lack of computational studies in this realm due to the complex nature of coupled reaction and diffusion processes in multicomponent multi-phase alloy systems. In this work, we apply a recently developed phase-field model to simulate the oxidation processes under different compositions and nucleation scenarios to gain insights into how a continuous oxide scale can be established. The results show that while alloy composition is critical for internal to external oxidation transition, the oxide nuclei size, shape and distribution also have significant impact on the transition kinetics.

Abstract:The establishment of composition-microstructure-property relationship is a long-standing topic in materials science, yet neither continuum mechanics approaches nor machine learning methods have ever established a generic model that can cover a wide spectrum of stress-strain relationships for metallic materials and, in particular, for steels having complex microstructures. In this study, a deep learning framework that handles a multimodal database, including composition and multi-source microstructure images, is developed for predicting the tensile properties of dual-phase steels. The model exhibits excellent generality for that it enables the coupling analysis of multimodal data. Moreover, the integration of multi-source microstructure information significantly enables the model to be compatible with multiple mechanisms and achieves accurate prediction in the large stress-strain range. Finally, the reverse visualization applied in the proposed framework deepens the mechanism understanding of strain distribution under different phase morphologies, which greatly improves the explicability of the deep learning model. This framework provides useful guidance for the prediction of composition-microstructure-property relationship in complex steel systems and can be potentially applied to other alloys.
A Review on Processing–Microstructure–Property Relationships of Al-Si Alloys: Recent Advances in Deformation Behavior

Abstract:While research on lightweight materials has been carried out for decades, it has become intensified with recent climate action initiatives leading pathways to net zero. Aluminum alloys are at the pinnacle of the light metal world, especially in the automotive and aerospace industries. This review intends to highlight recent developments in the processing, structure, and mechanical properties of structural Al-Si alloys to solve various pressing environmental issues via lightweighting strategies. With the excellent castability of Al-Si alloys, advancements in emerging casting methods and additive manufacturing processes have been summarized in relation to varying chemical compositions. Improvements in thermal stability and electrical conductivity, along with superior mechanical strength and fatigue resistance, are analyzed for advanced Al-Si alloys with the addition of other alloying elements. The role of Si morphology modification, along with particle distribution, size, and precipitation sequencing, is discussed in connection with the improvement of static and dynamic mechanical properties of the alloys. The physics-based damage mechanisms of fatigue failure under high-cycle and low-cycle fatigue loading are further elaborated for Al-Si alloys. The defect, porosity, and surface topography related to manufacturing processes and chemical compositions are also reviewed. Based on the gaps identified here, future research directions are suggested, including the usage of computational modeling of microstructures and the integration of artificial intelligence to produce mass-efficient and cost-effective solutions for the manufacturing of Al-Si alloys.

Abstract:High-strength steels are mainly composed of medium- or low-temperature microstructures, such as bainite or martensite, with coherent transformation characteristics. This type of microstructure has a high density of dislocations and fine crystallographic structural units, which ease the coordinated matching of high strength, toughness, and plasticity. Meanwhile, given its excellent welding performance, high-strength steel has been widely used in major engineering constructions, such as pipelines, ships, and bridges. However, visualization and digitization of the effective units of these coherent transformation structures using traditional methods (optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy) is difficult due to their complex morphology. Moreover, the establishment of quantitative relationships with macroscopic mechanical properties and key process parameters presents additional difficulty. This article reviews the latest progress in microstructural visualization and digitization of high-strength steel, with a focus on the application of crystallographic methods in the development of high-strength steel plates and welding. We obtained the crystallographic data (Euler angle) of the transformed microstructures through electron back-scattering diffraction and combined them with the calculation of inverse transformation from bainite or martensite to austenite to determine the reconstruction of high-temperature parent austenite and orientation relationship (OR) during continuous cooling transformation. Furthermore, visualization of crystallographic packets, blocks, and variants based on actual OR and digitization of various grain boundaries can be effectively completed to establish quantitative relationships with alloy composition and key process parameters, thereby providing reverse design guidance for the development of high-strength steel.

Abstract:Continuous innovations in design of advanced structural steels are essential for future progress in manufacturing, automotive and construction industries. Events taking place at nano and atomic scales play crucial role in controlling the strength of steels. Recently, strengths of 1 – 1.5 GPa were realised in nano-scale precipitation strengthened steels. With availability of modern characterisation techniques, such as high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography, it is now possible to gain insight into the mechanisms of solute atoms clustering and formation of nano-precipitates, as well as their interactions with dislocations and resulting contribution to strength. In this review, the focus is on cluster formation and nano-precipitation in low temperature body centred cubic phases (ferrite, bainitic ferrite and martensite) in a range of steels from high strength low alloyed to maraging ones. Experimental and modelling data on nucleation and growth of these features is presented. The possible strengthening mechanisms are reviewed. Finally, future research areas and challenges for these classes of steels are critically discussed.

Abstract:Abstract This is a viewpoint paper on recent progress in the understanding of the microstructure–property relations of advanced high-strength steels (AHSS). These alloys constitute a class of high-strength, formable steels that are designed mainly as sheet products for the transportation sector. AHSS have often very complex and hierarchical microstructures consisting of ferrite, austenite, bainite, or martensite matrix or of duplex or even multiphase mixtures of these constituents, sometimes enriched with precipitates. This complexity makes it challenging to establish reliable and mechanism-based microstructure–property relationships. A number of excellent studies already exist about the different types of AHSS (such as dual-phase steels, complex phase steels, transformation-induced plasticity steels, twinning-induced plasticity steels, bainitic steels, quenching and partitioning steels, press hardening steels, etc .) and several overviews appeared in which their engineering features related to mechanical properties and forming were discussed. This article reviews recent progress in the understanding of microstructures and alloy design in this field, placing particular attention on the deformation and strain hardening mechanisms of Mn-containing steels that utilize complex dislocation substructures, nanoscale precipitation patterns, deformation-driven transformation, and twinning effects. Recent developments on microalloyed nanoprecipitation hardened and press hardening steels are also reviewed. Besides providing a critical discussion of their microstructures and properties, vital features such as their resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and damage formation are also evaluated. We also present latest progress in advanced characterization and modeling techniques applied to AHSS. Finally, emerging topics such as machine learning, through-process simulation, and additive manufacturing of AHSS are discussed. The aim of this viewpoint is to identify similarities in the deformation and damage mechanisms among these various types of advanced steels and to use these observations for their further development and maturation.

Abstract:This paper reports the results of an ongoing research which was set up to investigate the effect of microstructures on the activity of different deformation mechanisms and the resulting mechanical behavior in Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al alloy. Various microstructures were established by different heat treatments. Depending on the microstructures, obvious differences in the mechanical properties of this alloy were obtained. It is shown that globular a phase (formed in alpha + beta phase field solution treatment conditions) and acicular a phase (formed in beta+(alpha + beta) phase field solution treatment conditions) have different effects on mechanical property. In aging conditions, the microstructure and mechanical property do not change apparently with the aging time. Typical deformation microstructure in a phase is always the {10 (1) over bar1} <(1) over bar 012 > type twin. With the decrease of beta phase stability, the deformation mechanism of beta phase varies from {112}< 111 > type twin to stress induced martensitic transformation. The microstructure of the a phase and beta phase has a great influence on the fractographic morphology. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
