Abstract:Nd:YVO/sub 4/ films were grown by pulsed laser deposition on sapphire and SiO/sub 2/ substrates. Their structure, wave-guide performance and absorption properties has been studied. We get the highly crystalline films, which has well optical properties.

Abstract:Nd:YVO4 crystals were successfully grown using the floating zone method. The crystal was grown from a V2O5 excess feed rod in oxygen atmosphere. Single crystals with good optical qualities and without inclusions, voids and growth striations were obtained with a series of Nd3+ concentrations. The light-light conversion efficiency of a diode laser-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser was up to 46%.

Abstract:The Nd:YVO4 thin films with a-axis preferred orientation have been grown on SiO2/Si substrates using pulsed laser deposition. Their structural, spectroscopic ellipsometric, and emission characteristics have been systematically studied. The lower ambient oxygen pressure during deposition would lead to better crystallinity in the films. The fluorescence at 1064.8 and 1342 nm in the Nd:YVO4 films was excited with an 808 nm diode laser as pump. The results show that the highly a-axis oriented Nd:YVO4 films grown on Si substrates may have potential applications in actively integrated circuits. (C) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:This paper presents the absorption spectrum, fluorescent spectrum and scattering characteristics of Nd:YAG single-crystal optical fiber (SCF). The measured results indicate that the Nd:YAG SCF grown by means of the LHPG method is in agreement with the bulk crystal in the properties such as absorption spectrum, and fluorescent spectrum. The defects and diameter variations of the SCF are also analyzed.

Abstract:Nd-doped GdVO4(Nd: GdVO4) films with a-axis preferred orientation were fabricated on SiO2/Si substrate by pulsed-laser deposition. Fluorescences at around 1065.0 and 1342.5 nm, corresponding to F-4(3/2) -> I-4(11/2) and F-4(3/2) -> I-4(13/2) transitions, respectively, were excited simultaneously with an 808 nm diode laser. Waveguide behaviors in the film were investigated by using the prism coupling technique at the wavelength of 632.8 nm. Both TE and TM mode spectra revealed that favorable light confinements were achieved within the Nd: GdVO4 waveguide layer. Additionally, the optically anisotropic properties of the film were studied in detail. (C) 2005 American Institute Of Physics.

Abstract:Based on the method previously proposed by the authors, the crystal-field analysis and investigation of the polarization and relative intensities of transitions between the sublevels F-4(3/2) to I-4(13/2), I-4(11/2) and I-4(9/2) in Nd3+:yVO4 crystals have been performed, in which the Nd3+ ions occupy positions with point symmetry D2d. The predicted polarization characteristics of all the emission lines under discussion are in complete agreement with those observed in experiments by other authors, and the emission lines with highest or comparatively high calculated intensities correspond to the laser emission lines that have been realized. In these calculations, the effect of seventh-order odd crystal field on the emission intensities was first omitted and then estimated by the method suggested by Judd in 1962. It turned out that this effect should be taken into account explicitly and cannot be completely made up only by multiplying a factor suggested by Judd. However, the simple method introduced can be seen as useful in the study of new laser crystals.

Abstract:Transition spectra in the 4F3/2-4I13/2 transition band of Nd:YVO4 crystal are too weak to form laser oscillation for the small stimulated emission cross section and strong parasitical oscillation, except for the 1342 nm wavelength. By adjusting the loss of the resonant cavity, 1386 nm continuous wave output from fiber coupled laser diode end-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser is achieved, which reaches 305 mW with pump power of 4.24 W, and the slope efficiency is 13.9% with the highest output power. Continuous wave outputs of 1342 nm and 1386 nm are also observed in the experiment. The stimulated emission cross section of Nd:YVO4 crystal at the wavelength of 1386 nm is calculated as about (3 ± 1) × 10-19 cm2, according to the pumping threshold energy and experimental data.

Abstract:Nd3+ and Yb3+ doped NaY(WO4)2 crystals with the size 25 mm×100 mm were grown by the Czochralski method.The habit of as-grown crystal was discussed and the phase of crystal was analyzed by XRD.The characteristics of thermal expansion were measured and the coefficient of thermal expansion of c axis was twice as much as a axis.Polarized absorption spectra,fluorescence spectra,and fluorescence decay curve were measured at room temperature.The standard and modified Judd-Ofelt theories have been performed to analyze the absorption spectra and the spectroscopic parameters.Results show that Yb3+ doped NaY(WO4)2 crystals have relatively large luminescent quantum efficiency.The Nd3+∶NaY(WO4)2 crystal was made into laser stick and and the laser experiment was performed using a xenon flash lamp as a pump source.Maximum pulse energy of 786 mJ with a repetition rate of 1Hz has been obtained.A maxinum output power of 87 mW and the double-frequency conversion efficiency is more than 25%,slope efficiency is 7.98%.

Abstract:The waveguiding epitaxial LiTaO3 and LiNbO3 films have been prepared on sapphire substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique. The as-grown films were characterized by Raman scattering, XRD and SEM techniques, which revealed that epitaxial LiTaO3 and LiNbO3 films with small roughness were achieved on (001) and (012) sapphire substrates, respectively. Optical waveguiding properties were demonstrated by m-line measurement of TM and TE modes.

Abstract:High transparency Nd:Y2O3 ceramics were prepared by vacuum sintering with La2O3 sintering additives. The optimum in-line transmittance of the sintered Nd: Y2O3 is 80.2% at the wavelength of 1100 nm, for which the content of La2O3 is 15.0 at%. Fully dense Nd: Y2O3 ceramic with an average grain size of 35.17 mu m was obtained. Vickers hardness, Young's modulus and the fracture toughness were measured to be 8.16 GPa, 171 GPa and 1.046 MPa.m(1/2), respectively. Thermal expansion coefficient and the thermal conductivity have been estimated as 8.19x10(-6) K-1 and 5.2 W/m.K, respectively. All the results indicate that Nd:Y2O3 transparent ceramic is a promising candidate for laser material.

Abstract:High transparency Nd: Y2O3 ceramics were prepared by vacuum sintering with La2O3 and ZrO2 sintering additives. The optimum in-line transmittance of the sintered Nd: Y2O3 is 80.98% at the wavelength of 1100nm, for which the content of La2O3 and ZrO2 are 10.0 and 3.0at.%, respectively. This specimen demonstrates homogeneous microstructure with the average grain size of 8.3m. The mechanism of sintering with La2O3 and ZrO2 aids and the optical properties was discussed. The absorption, emission cross section, and fluorescence lifetime have been estimated as 1.62x10(-20)cm(2), 5.13x10(-20)cm(2), and 232s, respectively. Vickers hardness and the fracture toughness were measured of 9.18GPa and 1.03Mpa center dot m(1/2), respectively. All the results indicate that Nd: Y2O3 transparent ceramic is a promising candidate for laser material.

Abstract:The observation of emission spectrum broadening of Nd:YVO4 by femtosecond laser pulse process is reported. This result opens the possibility of sub-ps pulse generation from Nd ion doped crystals with better physical qualities than glasses.

Abstract:Detailed polarized spectral properties of a 0.685 at. % Nd3+:Sr3Y2(BO3)(4) crystal grown by the Czochralski method have been investigated, including the absorption cross section, the emission cross section, and the fluorescence lifetime. The anisotropy of the spectral properties in different polarized directions was discussed thoroughly. The absorption and emission spectra of Nd3+ are found to be in-homogeneously broadened due to its internal disordered lattice. Additionally, the CW laser operation at 1.06 mu m was also demonstrated for the first time. The maximum output power of 905 mW was achieved, with corresponding optical conversion efficiency of 10.8% and slope efficiency of 12.8%. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A novel laser crystal Nd3+-doped yttrium barium phosphate (Nd:YBa3(PO4)3, hereafter Nd:YBP) with disordered crystal structure was reported. Single crystal growth, thermal, spectral and laser performances were investigated. The thermal conductivity at room temperature was found to be 1.35 W·m−1·K−1 and shown an increased tendency with increased temperature. The spontaneous transition probabilities, radiation lifetime and other parameters were evaluated by using the Judd-Ofelt (J-O) theory. The maximum absorption and emission cross sections for Nd:YBP crystal were obtained to be ∼ 2.32 × 10−20 cm2 (@ 804 nm) and 6.72 × 10−20 cm2 (@ 1056 nm), respectively. The measured fluorescence lifetime for Nd:YBP crystal was equal to 351 μs. Furthermore, diode-pumped continuous-wave laser operation was firstly realized near 1060 nm. The slope efficiency was found to be approximately 22% and the maximum output power for Nd:YBP crystal was 256 mW. Results reveal that the disordered crystal Nd:YBP might be further optimized for uses in laser field.

Abstract:Strontium barium niobate waveguiding thin films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition. The relationship between the film structure and the deposition temperature were analyzed by x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. Waveguiding properties such as refractive index and mode dispersion were examined and a dispersion relation was obtained for the (001)-oriented films.

Abstract:LiNbO3 optical waveguiding films are prepared on (001)-oriented alpha-SiO2 substrates by a pulsed laser deposition technique. The films are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), which reveal that highly (012) textured LiNbO3 films with small surface roughness and good compositional consistency with bulk LiNbO3 are achieved. The optical waveguiding properties are evaluated by the optical prism coupling method, which indicates that the m-lines of transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) multimodes are sharp and clear. The optical propagation losses for TM mode and TE mode are of the order of 1.7 and 2.1 dB/cm, respectively.

Abstract:Highly transparent Nd:Lu2O3 ceramics were fabricated from synthesized nanocystalline powder after being sintered in flowing H-2 atmosphere at 1880 degrees C for 8 h. The linear optical transmittance of the polished sample with 1.4mm thickness reaches 75.5% at the wavelength of 1080nm. The absorption band at 807nm has a FWHM of about 4 nm and the absorption cross section sigma(abs) at 807 nm is 2.998 x 10(-2) cm(2). According to the Judd-Ofelt theory, the intensity parameters Omega(2), Omega(4) and Omega(6) of 3at.%Nd:Lu2O3 sample are calculated to be 5.26x10(-20) cm(2), 13.11 x 10(-20) cm(2) and 8.37 x 10(-20) cm(2) respectively. The radiative lifetime tau(rad) of the F-4(3/2) level attains 165 mu s.

Abstract:We report on room-temperature subnanosecond waveguide laser operation at 1064 nm in a Nd:YVO4 crystal waveguide through Q-switching of phase-change nanomaterial vanadium dioxide (VO2). The unique feature of VO2 nanomaterial from the insulating to metallic phases offers low-saturation-intensity nonlinear absorptions of light for subnanosecond pulse generation. The low-loss waveguide is fabricated by using the femtosecond laser writing with depressed cladding geometry. Under optical pump at 808 nm, efficient pulsed laser has been achieved in the Nd:YVO4 waveguide, reaching minimum pulse duration of 690 ps and maximum output average power of 66.7 mW. To compare the Q-switched laser performances by VO2 saturable absorber with those based on two-dimensional materials, the 1064-nm laser pulses have been realized in the same waveguide platform with either graphene or transition metal dichalcogenide (in this work, WS2) coated mirror. The results on 2D material Q-switched waveguide lasers have shown that the shortest pulses are with 22-ns duration, whilst the maximum output average powers reach ~161.9 mW. This work shows the obvious difference on the lasing properties based on phase-change material and 2D materials, and suggests potential applications of VO2 as low-cost saturable absorber for subnanosecond laser generation.

Abstract:Completely (001) textured LiNbO(3) films have been fabricated upon thermally oxidized SiO(2)/Si substrates by in situ application of a low electric field in a pulsed-laser deposition system. The biased voltage was 70-75 V on parallel electrodes separated by 7.0 mm. Li-enriched crystal and ceramic targets were used. The achieved films were nearly stoichiometric and have smooth surfaces. Waveguiding performance of the films was demonstrated by a prism-coupling method. The refractive indices were calculated on the basis of isotropic and anisotropic waveguide theories. A low-light propagation loss of 1.9 dB/cm in the films was achieved. It is expected that the films can be used in integrated-optical devices that require d(33), gamma(33), (33), and n(33) elements.
