Abstract:Mo-Cu composite has been widely used due to its high thermal conductivity and adjustable low thermal expansion. However it is difficult to fabricate Mo-Cu composite with Mo content more than 80 wt%. In this investigation, a new process was developed to fabricate high Mo content Mo-Cu alloys: Mo powder was compacted to 60 wt% of the density of the composite. The Mo compact was infiltrated at 1200°C for 2 hours with Cu desired for the composite. The infiltrated part was die forged to near full density at 950°C. The forged part was first thinned 70% by hot rolling at 950°C and then thinned 10% by cold rollingThe experiment results show that the Mo-15wt%Cu fabricated by the new process has satisfactory properties. The relative density increase from 83% for infiltrated part to 99.8% by die forging, and the coefficient of thermal conductivity (CTC) increase from 146 W/(m · K) to 188 W/(m · K), meanwhile the CTE decrease to 7.8 × 10 -6/°C and the hardness increase dramatically. The composite is thinned 80% by rolling without cracking.
