Abstract:In the integrity assessment of natural gas pipelines, it is critical to determine the impacts of variable wall thickness and misalignment on the fracture of welded joints. In this study, modified single-edge notched tensile (SENT) specimens are proposed to conduct fracture analysis on the X80 pipeline steel welded joints with variable wall thicknesses and misalignment geometric features. The fracture properties of the specimens were tested, including load-carrying capacity, crack tip opening displacement (CTOD), and stretch zone width (SZW). Three-dimensional elastoplastic finite element models were established to investigate the crack-tip constraint level in the modified SENT specimens. The correlations between the crack-tip constraint and fracture toughness were further investigated by finite element analysis coupled with the Gurson-Tvergaard- Needleman (GTN) damage model and validated by the test results. The research results of this study may provide a more substantial guiding reference for the fracture assessment of the pipeline weld joints.
