Abstract:The microstructures, phase compositions and microwave dielectric properties of (1−x)SiO2−xTiO2 (0≤x≤0.20) composite ceramics prepared by a conventional oxide mixing method were investigated. XRD patterns conformed that SiO2 and TiO2 phases co-existed as a two-phase system and some Ti4+ ions entered the SiO2 lattice. Addition of TiO2 eliminated the formation of tridymite phase. As TiO2 content x increased, the εr and τf values increased gradually, while the Q×f values declined inversely. Under the same amount of TiO2 content, the εr and Q×f values increased initially and then decreased slightly with increasing the sintering temperature, whereas the τf values increased slowly. The 0.84SiO2–0.16TiO2 ceramics sintered at 1275°C for 3h possess good dielectric properties of εr=5.91, Q×f=39,680GHz (measured at 12.52GHz), and τf=−4.53ppm/°C.

Abstract:The (1-x)(0.2B(2)O(3)-0.8SiO(2))-xTiO(2) (x = 0.025-0.1) glass matrix composites were prepared by a solid state sintering method, and high relative density >97% was obtained when the sintering temperature was 975-1000 degrees C. The rutile and amorphous phases were indicated by XRD, and no crystallization of amorphous SiO2 or chemical reaction was observed. With increasing x from 0 to 0.1, the dielectric constant (epsilon(r)) increased slightly while the Qf value decreased, and the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (tau(f)) increased from a negative to a positive value. The optimized microwave dielectric properties were obtained as following: epsilon(r) = 4.01, Qf= 66,800 GHz, tau(f) = -2.2 ppm/degrees C for x = 0.025 sintered at 1000 degrees C, and epsilon(r) = 4.22, Qf = 55,300 GHz, tau(f) = 3.1 ppm/degrees C for x = 0.05 sintered at 975 degrees C. The ultra-low epsilon(r), high Qf value and near-zero tau(f) indicate that the present glass matrix composites are excellent candidates as the microwave substrate materials. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:SiC–TiB 2 composite ceramics were fabricated by pressureless sintering at 2200 °C using B 4 C and C as sintering additives. The effects of TiB 2 content on the microstructure, electrical properties, infrared radiation properties and mechanical properties of the composites have been systematically studied. The prepared composites have high relative density (>98%) and good mechanical properties. The existence of Schottky barrier at the SiC–SiC grain boundary makes SiC-based ceramics showing high resistivity and nonlinear electrical feature. The introduction of TiB 2 forms the SiC–TiB 2 grain boundary with lower barrier height, which allows electrons to pass through more easily. Therefore, the nonlinear coefficient and the resistivity of SiC–TiB 2 composite ceramics both gradually decrease with the increase of TiB 2 content. When the TiB 2 content reaches 15 vol%, the electrical percolation property is obtained, and the bulk resistivity drops to 0.87 Ω cm. The infrared emissivity of the composites shows a decreasing tendency, which is not conducive to practical application. According to the results of electrical and infrared radiation properties, the addition amount of 15 vol%TiB 2 is a better formula.

Abstract:A series of Sm2Zr2O7-SiC composites doped with different volume fraction and particle size of SiC were prepared by hot pressing at 1300 °C. The phase of the composites prepared is P-Sm2Zr2O7 and C-SiC, and no other diffraction peaks exist, which indicates that Sm2Zr2O7 has great chemical compatibility with SiC. The thermal conductivity and phonon thermal conductivity of the Sm2Zr2O7-SiC composites are measured by the laser pulse method. The photon thermal conductivity of the composites is obtained by subtracting the phonon thermal conductivity from the total thermal conductivity. The results show that the photon thermal conductivity of Sm2Zr2O7-SiC composites is lower than that of pure Sm2Zr2O7. The photon thermal conductivity of Sm2Zr2O7-SiC composites decreases first and then increases with the increase of SiC particle size. Sm2Zr2O7-(5 vol%, 10 µm)SiC composite has the lowest photon thermal conductivity.

Study Of Electrical Conductivity Of Tic/Si3n4 Ceramic Composites

Abstract:Si3N4 based ceramic composites with TiC powder were fabricated by gas pressure sintering and their electrical conductivities Were investigated. The ceramic composites with different electrical resistivities consist Of Si3N4 powder as an insulating matrix, and TiC as electrically conductive additives. The electrical conductivity accords with the percolation theory. The electrical resistivity of the composite mainly depends on the content of TiC. The percolation threshold Vc of the composites is about 16.45 similar to 18.50vol.%(Vc), i.e., an electrical conduction path is formed by adding more than 16.45vol% of TiC in the composites, and the electrical resistivity decreases sharply. Different electrical resistivities of TiC/Si3N4 composites can be adjusted through controlling the content of TiC of the composites. These results suggested the possibility of self-monitoring cracking and strains in ceramic composites.

Abstract:The behavior of dielectric and microwave properties against sintering temperature has been carried out on CaO-SiO2-B2O3 ceramic matrix composites with ZrO2 addition. The results indicated that ZrO2 addition was advantageous to improve the dielectric and microwave properties. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns show that the major crystalline beta-CasiO(3) and a little SiO2 phase existed at the temperature ranging from 950 degrees C to 1050 degrees C. At 0.5 wt% ZrO2, CaO-SiO2-B2O3 ceramic matrix composites sintered at 1000 degrees C possess good dielectric properties: epsilon(r) = 5.85, tan delta = 1.59 x 10(-4) (1 MHz) and excellent microwave properties: epsilon(r) = 5.52, Q.f = 28,487 GHz (11.11 GHz). The permittivity of Zr-doped CaO-SiO2-B2O3 ceramic matrix composites exhibited very little temperature dependence, which was less than +/- 2% over the temperature range of -50 to 150 degrees C. Moreover, the ZrO2-doped CaO-SiO2-B2O3 ceramic matrix composites have low permittivity below 5.5 over a wide frequency range from 20 Hz to 1 MHz. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:During the light curing process, the high transmittance of fused quartz leads to overcuring of the paste, thereby affecting its forming precision. To address this issue, aniline black dye was incorporated into the SiO 2f /SiO 2 ceramic paste to enhance its ultraviolet light absorption. The impact of modifying agent on paste viscosity and the influence of sintering temperature on ceramic microstructure and properties were investigated. The results demonstrated that by adding the black dye, the dimensional deviation rate of SiO 2f /SiO 2 composite ceramic decreased to less than 8.0%. The optimal sintering temperature was determined as 900°C, resulting in a maximum flexural strength of 21.9 MPa at room temperature and 25.5 MPa at 600°C respectively. However, with further increase in temperature, flexural strength declined due to cristobalite formation. Additionally, dielectric properties were examined and it was found that the main failure mechanisms of the fibers in the SiO 2f /SiO 2 composite ceramic were fiber fracture and fiber pull-out.

Abstract:A kind of heterostructural SiC nanowires/SiOC composite ceramic is obtained by directly pyrolysis of mixture of poly(methylhydrosiloxane) (PMHS) and 2, 4, 6, 8-tetramethy1-2, 4, 6, 8-tetravinylcyclotetrasiloxane (TMTV) polysiloxane. The mechanical of in-situ growth SiC nanowires is mainly attributed to the initial phase separation of SiOC ceramic and subsequent solid-phase reaction of SiO and C phases. Due to the formation of SiC nanowires in amorphous SiOC ceramic, the interfaces of the SiOC particles are raising, which leads to the escalation of interfacial scattering. Thus, the absorption properties are promoted by the electronic dipole polarization and interfacial scattering. Results show that the minimal reflection coefficient (RCmin) of hybrid SiC nanowires/SiOC ceramic decreases with the increasing annealed temperature, and reaches - 10 dB at 13 GHz at the thickness of 3.8 mm when the heat-temperature gets to 1400 degrees C.

Abstract:Owing to the polysiloxane (PSO) characteristic of cheap, healthy, available and low free carbon content, in this research the SiCf/SiOC composites were manufactured by polymer infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) method with various content of SiO2 fillers. It can be concluded from the DSC-TGA and XRD analysis that SiOC ceramic was formed from PSO when pyrolysis temperature exceeded 800 °C and after pyrolysis at 1000 °C the PSO mainly composed by amorphous SiO2. The effects of SiO2 fillers on morphology of SiOC matrix, flexural strength, complex permittivity, and microwave absorption property of SiCf/SiOC composites were investigated. The results indicated that the SiO2 fillers can enhance the density and reduce the microcracks of matrix. Therefore, the maximum flexural strength 201.09 MPa can be obtained by adding 5 g SiO2 filler into PSO precursor solution. The complex permittivity and flexural strength of composites first increased when content of SiO2 filler enhanced from 0 to 5 g. Nevertheless, with the content of SiO2 filler increased from 5 g to 10 g and 15 g, the complex permittivity and flexural strength of composites decreased. In , the SiCf/SiOC composites with 10 g SiO2 fillers not only possess the reflection loss as low as -26.02 dB and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) below -10dB up to 3.21 GHz at the thickness of 3.0 mm but also own the flexural strength of 171.71 MPa.

Abstract:(Ca0.9Mg0.1)SiO3ceramics possess a low dielectric constant and a highQfvalue, however, the densification temperature of (Ca0.9Mg0.1)SiO3ceramics is higher than 1280°C. In this paper, the effect of Li2CO3addition on sinterability and dielectric properties of (Ca0.9Mg0.1)SiO3ceramics were studied. The phase presence and surface morphology were determined by XRD and SEM techniques, respectively. CaSiO3and Ca2MgSi2O7phases were observed. With the addition of >2.0 wt% Li2CO3, the sintering temperature of (Ca0.9Mg0.1)SiO3ceramic was significantly lowered, reaching to 1070°C. (Ca0.9Mg0.1)SiO3ceramics with 4wt% Li2CO3sintered at 1070°C for 3 h shows excellent dielectric properties:εr=5.91,Qf= 15300GHz (at 10GHz).

Abstract:SiO(2)-SiC composite particles were prepared using a sol-gel process. BaTiO(3) powders were synthesize through solid-state reaction. They were mixed as microwave absorbents with Fe(3)O(4) powders to obtain the complex absorption. Epoxide resin (EP) was used as matrix and solidified with the mixtures. The techniques of DSC-TG, XRD were used to characterize the composite particles and the obtained compacts. A vector network analyzer was used to measure the reflectivity of the SiO(2)-SiC-based composites. The effects of the aborbents' contents on the reflection of the microwave absorption materials were disscussed. It was found that SiO(2)-SiC composites could be prepared using sol-gel process and BaTiO(3) powders could be synthesize through solid-state reaction. The results indicated that SiO(2)-SiC composite is contribute to absorb microwave, where SiO(2)-SiC: BaTiO(3): Fe(3)O(4) = 6:2:2 (vol %), the frequency region in which the maximum reflectivity is more than -10 dB is 5.4-7.6 GHz.

Abstract:In this work, an improved method for measuring the thermal conductivity of buried oxides of a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer is proposed which is simple and effective. Using this method, the thermal conductivity of thin buried oxides with different SOI wafer thicknesses fabricated by separation by implantation of oxygen (SIMOX) technology is measured. It is found that at least in the range of thickness not less than 55 nm, the classically defined thermal conductivity of the SIMOX oxide remains constant (i.e., no size effect is observed) and is equal to 1.06 W m(-1) K-1, which is smaller than the 1.4 W m(-1) K-1 normally used value in device engineering. The boundary thermal resistance between the Si/SiO2 interface for SIMOX technology is measured accurately here. The results show that this boundary resistance cannot be neglected in calculation of the thermal resistance of SOI devices especially in the case of thinner back oxide. Abstract:The time-domain thermoreflectance metrology is applied to evaluate the thermal conductivities of filler particles embedded in a composite matrix. Specifically, a system of glass and ceramic microspheres with a diameter of 100 to 150 μm embedded in an epoxy matrix was used as a representation of a typical composite thermal interface material (TIM) suitable for microelectronics applications. These measurements provide a direct characterization of the thermal properties of filler materials. The measured thermal conductivities of both borosilicate glass and yttria stabilized zirconia microspheres agree well with literature values for bulk materials, whereas the thermal conductivity of the alumina microspheres is nearly 50% lower than that of bulk crystals. The reduction in thermal conductivity of the alumina microspheres highlights how important this level of understanding is for TIM development and is attributed to enhanced phonon scattering due to structural heterogeneity, such as defects induced by phase mixing and microvoids. Combining sample preparation, structural characterization, and direct thermal measurements, our study reveals the structure–thermal property relationship for individual microspheres. The results of this work can facilitate the design and engineering of composite-based thermally conductive materials for thermal management applications.

Abstract:The effects of the introduction of silica glass and silica ceramic into Ca-Al-B-Si-O glass/ Al2O3 composites on decreasing the shrinkage and the dielectric constant of samples were investigated by FTIR, DSC, XRD and SEM. The results show that silica ceramic filler can better improve the formation of Si-O-Si network in the composites under high temperature, which leads to increased continuity of glass network at high temperature, and deduces the increase of viscosity of composites and further results in the decrease in the shrinkage of samples. Densification, three-point strength, and dielectric constant of samples decrease with the increase of silica glass or silica ceramic content. By contrast, Ca-Al-B-Si-O glass/Al2O3 composites with 4 wt% silica ceramic exhibit better properties of a bulk density of 2.81 g·cm−3, a porosity of 0.3%, a 3dp value of 202 MPa, a ɛ r value of 7.41, a tan δ value of 8.3×10−4 at 10 MHz and a well matching with Ag electrodes. This material is suitable to be used as the LTCC material for the application in wireless communications.

Abstract:The CaCu3Ti4O12-MgTiO3 ceramics, containing main phases of CCTO and MgTiO3/MgTi2O4, were prepared by sol-gel method and then sintered at 1000, 1050 and 1100 degrees C, respectively. The sample sintered at 1050 C presents a high dielectric permittivity (similar to 1 X 10(4)) and a low dielectric loss (similar to 0.1), both of which are stable with the temperature and frequency. The dielectric permittivity of the sample sintered at 1100 degrees C is about 3 times as that of pure CCTO samples sintered at the same temperature. The current-voltage nonlinear coefficient of the sample is 4.56.

Abstract:The microwave dielectric properties of MgO-SiO 2 -TiO 2 system were investigated through the solid sintering method. A detailed analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of SiO 2 content and holding time on the phase composition, microstructure, sintering characteristics and dielectric properties of MgO-SiO 2 -TiO 2 ceramics. In this study, it was discovered that for all compositions, a three-phase composite of Mg 2 SiO 4 , Mg 2 TiO 4 and MgO was observed. Furthermore, as the SiO 2 content increased, there was a gradual increase in the amount of Mg 2 SiO 4 phase, while the amounts of Mg 2 TiO 4 and MgO phases decreased. Although holding time did not change the phase type, it influenced the intensity of diffraction peaks of each phase. The variation of holding time affected reaction efficiency and crystallization behavior of the samples. The MgO-SiO 2 -TiO 2 system exhibited wide tunability in terms of dielectric constants, and higher quality factors were observed at lower dielectric constant values. The MgO-SiO 2 -TiO 2 system, composed of 50.44 wt% MgO, 30.28 wt% SiO 2 and 14.28 wt% TiO 2 , were sintered at 1500 °C for 2 h. Remarkable dielectric properties were achieved, with the dielectric constant measured at 7.7, the quality factor recorded as 89,798 GHz (11 GHz), and the temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency calculated as − 32.5 ppm/°C.

Abstract:Amorphous Si/SiO2(a-Si/SiO2) superlattices have been fabricated by the magnetron sputtering technique. The superlattice with an Si layer thickness of 1.8 nm has been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The result indicates that most of the regions in the Si layer consist of amorphous phase, while regular structure appears in some local regions. This is in agreement with the Raman scattering spectroscopy. The optical absorption spectrum and photoluminescence (PL) spectrum have been measured. Moreover, the third-order optical nonlinearity χ(3)of this superlattice has been measured. To our knowledge, this is the first investigation of the nonlinear absorption and refractive index of an a-Si/SiO2superlattice using the Z -scan technique. The real and imaginary parts of χ(3)have been found to be 1.316 × 10−7eus and −5.596 × 10−7eus, respectively, which are about two orders of magnitude greater than those of porous silicon. The results may be attractive for potential application in electro-optics devices.

Abstract:The hierarchical SiOC/SiCnws/CF composites (A/B/C structure) were designed via precursor infiltration and pyrolysis process. The SiOC ceramics served as the wave‐transparent characteristic materials to adjust the impedance matching. Herein, the in situ growth of SiCnws not only was used for the absorber but served as the reinforcement of SiOC matrix composites. In detail, the SiOC/SiCnws/CF‐1200°C‐2 exhibits excellent electromagnetic absorption performance with minimum reflection loss of −46 dB at 14.4 GHz with the thickness of 1.6 mm, and its effective absorption band reaches 4.3 GHz. Its compressive strength reaches 8.69 and 16.41 MPa in z and x/y directions, separately. This contribution has a guidance for the application of carbon fiber/ceramics matrix composites in harsh environment.

Abstract:Ti3SiC2/SiC ceramic composites with different content of SiC were synthesized through in-situ solid displacement reaction by hot pressing from starting mixture powders of TiC, Si and active carbon. The densities of the specimens were measured, the phase composition of the specimens was identified by XRD, and the microstructures were observed by SEM.
