Abstract:With low-cost inorganic salts as the starting materials, ZrO2 aerogels have been synthesized by the common precipitation route, coupled with supercritical CO2 fluid-drying technology to remove the solvent entrapped in the gelatinous precipitates. The aerogels were characterized by TG/DSC thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering and nitrogen adsorption. Experiments revealed that supercritical CO2 fluid-drying could effectively alleviate the hard agglomeration of grains during the drying process, hence the morphology of the powder largely retained the network texture of the original gel. The resulting ZrO2 aerogels were composed of spherical nanoparticles of 3-25 nm, which constituted the soft clusters with hydrodynamic diameter of several-hundred nanometers. Moreover, the aerogels were characterized by high specific surface area and large pore volume attributed to meso-to macropores and a negligible contribution of microporosity.
