Abstract:The friction and wear behavior of Cu-nanosized TiB2 in-situ composites in dry sliding against Cu-graphite composite was investigated on a pin-on-disk test rig. It was found that the friction and wear characteristics of the Cu-nanosized TiB2 in-situ composite were closely dependent on the applied load and the sliding speed. The wear rate and the friction coefficient of the in-situ composite increased with the increase of the applied load. Owing to the interfacial cracking under a higher applied load, the wear of the composite with high content of TiB2 would transit from the mild wear to severe one over the applied load range from 10 N to 80 N. Under a moderate applied load, the wear rate and the friction coefficient of the in-situ composite decreased with the increase of the sliding speed, which was attributed to the formation of a protective oxide film on the sliding surface and the reinforcement of nanosized TiB2 particles in the Cu matrix. The later made the hardness of the subsurface layer maintained and the strength of the composite maintained as well at the increased temperature of the sliding surface under a relatively higher sliding speed. The Cu-nanosized TiB2 in-situ composite was dominated by plastic flow and oxidation wear in sliding against the Cu-graphite composite at a higher sliding speed.
