Abstract:Metal matrix composites is a new type of engineering materials with broad prospects. The strengthening effect of microstructure of matrix is one of main strengthening mechanisms, and it has been widely studied by theoretical analysis [1‐3]. However, the experimental study on the actual property of matrix of composite has been less reported. In this paper, the technique of X-ray diffraction was used to measure the effective bearing of matrix in composite, and the relation between stress and strain of matrix of a 20vol%SiCw/Al composite was determined for the purpose to study the actual properties of matrix in composite. The experimental material is a squeeze casting 20vol%SiCw/Al composite. The length and diameter of whisker is 5‐15 µm and 0.2‐1 µm, respectively. The matrix material is a 99.8wt%%Al pure aluminum. In addition, the pure aluminum material was selected to compare with the composite. The dimension of sample is: length 50 mm, thickness 2 mm and effective width 6 mm. The geometrical relation in X-ray stress measurement is shown in Fig. 1. The surface of sample should be etched by 20%NaOH solution with 100 µm of thickness to relieve the effect of machining layer near surface in the process of stress measurement. The tensile tests were carried out in the horizontal mechanical equipment, and the direction of tensile strain was along the direction of Y-axis of Fig. 1. The strains along this direction of sample were measured using the strain gage. With the X-300 type of X-ray stress analyzer, the effective bearing stresses of matrix in composite during tensile deformation were determined. The matrix bears the triaxial stress when the composite is applied a uniaxial stress [4‐6], and the effective bearing stress of matrix is the key-factor to lead the plastic strain of matrix in composite. The effective bearing stress of matrix in composite in Fig. 1 can be expressed as [6]:
