Abstract:The hydraulic and mass transfer characteristics of a new type DFG oriented grid structured packing in a 100 mm diameter extraction column were studied. MIBK (methyl isobutyl ketone) and DIPE (diisopropyl ether) were selected as extractants, which were widely used in solvent extraction for coal chemical industry wastewater phenols removal. Result indicated that the hydraulic of the two extraction systems can be well described by an improved correlation; compared to the traditional packing, the extraction column with DFG structured packing can greatly improve the operation loadings. Within the experiment range, the max flooding loading is as high as 150 m3/(m2·h). The mass transfer performance is similar to traditional structured packing, the height equivalent to theoretical stage (He) is between 2.2 and 3.1 m. The DFG structured packing holds good integrated performances, which can meet the need of high throughput phenol removal extractors for the increasing large-scaled coal chemical industry.

Abstract:Three-phase packed distillation has been so far relatively poorly understood. Hence, a Substantial mass transfer model describing the (vapor-liquid-liquid) three-phase flow in packed column is proposed to explore the essence of three-phase distillation. The model enables, for the first time, rigorous computation of all the interphase transfer parameters oil the basis of a thorough consideration of the unique How behaviors (Such as film breakup, rivulet-flow, Surface variation, etc.) Caused by the second liquid. The derived theoretical mass transfer model has been incorporated into the three-phase nonequilibrium Simulation. Moreover, comprehensive experimental investigations have been carried Out using two laboratory-scale columns, and four different packings (Montz-Pak B1-350, Rombopak 9M, Raschig Super-Ring 0.3, and Sulzer Optiflow C.36) were considered. The derived experimental database, covering a wide range of load conditions, is used for flow pattern identification and model validation. For the Studied n-butanol/water/n-propanol system, it is revealed that the flow pattern of file second liquid (aqueous phase) could play a critical role in the system performance. When the second liquid flows below the first liquid film, it will enlarge the interfacial area and enhance the vapor-liquid mass transfer; when the second liquid flows above the first liquid film, it will reduce the interfacial area and degrade the mass transfer. This fundamental flow behavior may essentially result in the discrepancy existing in the highly variable separation efficiencies in three-phase packed columns.

Abstract:Solvent extraction is an important chemical separation technology which is widely used in hydrometallurgy, nuclear chemical industries, petrochemical industries and etc. Extraction columns have many advantages, but are very difficult to scale-up and design. The study on mathematic modeling and scale-up of extraction columns in abroad is reviewed, and then the research, innovation and application of extraction columns in China are detailed in this paper. The systematical studies on two-phase hydrodynamics, back mixing and mass transfer of pulsed sieve plate extraction column by Wang and his co-workers are introduced in some detail since its importance for nuclear industries. The approaches developed by Wang to scale-up extraction columns by the first principle are essential. The performance of new developed coalescence-dispersion pulsed sieve plate extraction column is excellent and has been used in industry. The studies on RDC, packed extraction column and pulsed packed extraction column are described too. The innovations on NRDC, SMR and PFMR have great importance since their excellent performance and wide application. © All Rights Reserved.

Abstract:Hydrodynamics and mass transfer experiments were carried out in a 0.1m diameter extraction column with a new type (FG) stack packing developed recently in our laboratory. The working systems used were n-Butanol/Succinic acid/water with low interfacial tension of 1.50 x 10(-3)N . m(-1) and 30% TBP (Kerosene)/Acetic acid/water with interfacial tension of 10.0 x 10(-3)N . m(-1). Experimental results obtained indicated that (FG) stack packed extraction column was proved to possess high throughput capacity and excellent mass transfer efficiency. Replacing rotary discs with FG packings in a lube furfural extraction tower was quite success with significant economical benefits being claimed.

Abstract:Liquid mixing behavior is very complex and has great influence on the mass transfer process in the column packed with compound packing (125X+250Y).Until now the study of liquid mixing behavior in structured packing is far from enough.This paper provides experiment data for column design and process control.Liquid mixing behavior is investigated by using salt tracer technique.The axial and radial diffusion coefficients are obtained on the basis of diffusion models.It is found that liquid diffusion coefficients increase with liquid velocities and are insensitive to the change of gas velocities.

Abstract:Scheibel extraction column is one of the available countercurrent agitated contactors. The main disadvantage of the Scheibel extraction column is the severe backmixing. In order to reduce the backmixing effect and provide efficient phase separation, a modified single stage Scheibel column was designed. Two sieve plates were installed at the two ends of the packed section and it can reduce the backmixing greatly. The factors of opening ratio, agitation speed and overall flow rates were studied in the modified Scheibel extraction tower by using propanol -water -heptane system. The optimized open porosity and operation parameters have been determined that the open porosity 10%, the agitation speed 100 r/min and the overall feed flow rate 6.0 mL/min. The extraction efficiency of the traditional Scheibel extraction tower and the modified Scheibel extraction tower were studied with the optimized opening ratio and operation parameters. The results demonstrated that the extraction efficiency of the modified Scheibel extraction tower was much better than that of the traditional one.

Abstract:A new configuration of coalescence-dispersed pulsed-sieve-plate extraction Column (CDPSEC) was developed, and the mass transfer and axial mixing characteristics were evaluated with the two-point dynamic method. The influence of operation conditions was discussed with experimental results, showing that the mass transfer performance of CDPSEC mainly depends on the energy input and the holdup of dispersed phase. Higher energy input, results in higher holdup of the dispersed phase, the axial mixing of the continuous phase is suppressed.. and the true height of mass transfer unit decreases markedly. On the other hand.. higher energy input leads to more serious forward mixing of the dispersed phase, so the energy input should be limited. Accordingly the operation conditions were divided into two regions,. and empirical correlations for predicting the mass transfer and axial mixing characteristics in different regions with a satisfactory accuracy were suggested.

Abstract:The particle velocity distributions in the liquid-solid countercurrent nylon 6 extraction tower equipped with different types of inserts were investigated by both cold-model experiments and 2D-DEM simulations. The cold-model experiment results near the insert were well interpreted by the distribution of the particle contact force acquired from the DEM simulation. Compared with the disordered particle flow caused by a conventional single-funnel insert, the uniform particle flow could be realized by a special combination of single-funnel inserts with 53° and 35° dip angles of the upper and lower parts, respectively. In addition, a new type of insert, the multi-funnel insert, was found to be more beneficial in improving the uniformity of the particle velocity distribution because it made the particle contact force near the insert uniform. Furthermore, the mass flow state could be maintained in a wider range of discharge rate, which implied an enhancement of the operating flexibility of the tower equipped with the multi-funnel insert. These developed inserts have the potential to be applied in large-scale liquid-solid countercurrent extraction processes.

Abstract:To develop an efficient extractor, a falling-film contactor with polypropylene hollow fibers as packing materials was used to extract phenol and acrylic acid from an aqueous phase with kerosene containing 30% (v/v) tributyl phosphate (TBP). The two fluids were added to the top of the extractor and due to the different affinity of the two phases, the organic phase would spread to a thin film on the fiber surface and the aqueous phase would spread on the organic phase, mass transfer could occur during the falling process. The flow characteristics in the extractor were studied with a theoretical model, by which the flow status in the module can be predicted and provide a way to select suitable membrane materials for a specified extraction system. Studies on the mass transfer characteristics showed that falling-film extractor using hollow fiber as packing is highly efficient because of a very large mass transfer area and can be operated at extreme phase ratios in comparison with an extraction column.

Abstract:Amine extraction tower for liquified petroleum gas (LPG) desulfurization is the critical equipment to ensure the LPG quality in operation. The appropriate process parameters and operating data are presented and fluid dynamics of column packings and design methods of tower internals are given for the optimized design and operation of the tower as well as for the production of on-spec LPG. The root causes of amine en-trainment are analyzed and solutions are proposed in respect of the process and equipment. Two types of high-efficiency packings are recommended for improving LPG quality and increasing extraction tower capacity.

Abstract:SQ-type filler is a new structured packing,it is by changing the corrugated structure of the packing to improve its hydrodynamic performance,increase the mass transfer efficiency.This paper describes the structural characteristics of SQ-type packing,surface treatment and processing methods,and describes the application of SQ-type packing.Practice shows,SQ-type packing has good overall performance,can improve the gas-liquid contact conditions,lower tower pressure drop and improve mass transfer efficiency.The successful application of SQ- type packing have improved the competitiveness and technological level of enterprises,achieved the energy saving and improved efficiency.

Abstract:To study the effect of dispersion and coalescence on mass transfer performance in extraction columns, three types of sieve arrangement in a pulsed-sieve-plate extraction column (PSEC) were designed by inserting different number of dispersion and coalescence plates into the column. Characteristics of mass transfer and axial mixing were evaluated and compared using a working system of 30% tributylphosphate (TBP, in kerosene)/nitric acid/water. Thus, the mass transfer efficiency of dispersion-coalescence pulsed-sieve-plate extraction column (DCPSEC) could increase by > 30% as compared with standard PSEC, due to the influence of an interface renewal through an arrangement of 50 mm in plate spacing and one coalescence plate every four plates. Mass transfer efficiency of another type of DCPSEC with 25 mm in plate spacing was lower than that of standard PSEC because lowering plate spacing would lead to bad dispersibility and lower interface area, despite the fact that lowering of axial mixing was greater than that of the other two types of PSEC. Therefore, it is very important to optimize dispersion and coalescence conditions for better performance of columns.

Abstract:The hydrodynamics such as dispersion phase retention rate and liquid flooding velocity were studied, and mass transfer experiments including theoretical plate determination were conducted in a 2 × 0.1 m dia extraction column filled with HS-I saddle type packing. The working system used in the experiments was n-butanol/succinic acid/water having low interface tension. The extraction column with HS-I type packing possessed high flux and high mass transfer efficiency, and the correlated equations could be used in the scale-up design of the column. The extraction column has been successfully used in LPG desulfurization process.

Abstract:The hydraulic characteristics and mass transfer efficiency of a new kind of oriented grid packing extractor were investigated by experimental study. The throughput of the new extractor increased greatly than the traditional packed extractor. When velocity ratioLR (dispersed phase:continuous phase) equaled 1:5, flooding throughout reached 150 m3·m?2·h?1. The new packed extractor also exhibited good extraction efficiency, and thus could have excellent application prospects in many areas as solvent deasphalting in petroleum refining process, phenol removal from wastewater in coal chemical industry,etc.

Abstract:The structure packing has been widely applied to distillation and absorption for chemical based industrial for decades. However, its capacity and efficiency haven't been improved too much while the demands on high efficient column internals are increasing in the last 20 years. Therefore, the study on new approaches to intensify the packing becomes an active research topic which can bring remarkable economical benefits. Gas and liquid flow behavior in corrugated structure packing was studied by CFD simulation. The collision of cross gas streams caused main part of packing bed pressure drop, which makes no contribution on gas-liquid mass-transfer. The liquid deflective flow on traditional corrugation packing surface was notable. Thus, effective mass-transfer area was reduced. A new type corrugated packing was developed based on the CFD simulation and theoretical analysis. The characteristics of the new packing were studied in a distillation column. The pressure drop of the new packing reduced about 30% and mass-transfer efficiency increased about 15% compared with the Mellapak with the same special area. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the AIChE Spring Meeting (Houston, TX 4/22-26/2007).

Abstract:For gas-liquid-liquid extraction,a novel structured packing with diversion windows was developed.The geometry characteristics of proposed structured packing were the diversion windows arranged in the crest and trough of the traditional ripple packing.Due to the division windows on the structured packing,the flow pattern was adjusted,that is,the liquid stream on one side of packing can penetrate through the windows and then reach to the other side of the packing.In addition,the flow channel for the gas phase was enlarged and the disturbance frequency was increased.The mass transfer efficiency and hydrodynamic performance of the novel packing were determined experimentally.The results indicate that along with the increase in gas phase flow rate,the flooding velocity decreases,and the apparent height of mass transfer unit first reduces but then increases.The structured packing proposed can promote the dispersed phase′s droplet-film flow pattern,which helps enhancing the mass transfer.Under the same operating conditions,the hydrodynamic performance and mass transfer efficiency of the novel structured packing can be increased by 1 1% and 44.7% than that of super mini ring packing in average.
