Abstract:Published correlations for the prediction of flooding velocity in packed extraction columns are classified and analysed in terms of their methods of approach and way they are used. Problems were encountered when these correlations were used to predict the flooding velocity in new type of high-voidage packed column with low to medium interfacial tension systems. Results are presented to illustrate the problem encountered in the scale-up and design of packed columns. It is concluded that more measurements and a better understanding of the hydrodynamics are needed before reliable scale up can be carried out with this type of column.
Measurement of flooding gas velocity in packed column by acoustic emission technique

Abstract:The acoustic emission (AE) signal characteristics under different operation conditions of packed column were investigated by analyzing standard deviation (STD), power spectrum density (PSD) and multi-scale wavelet transform of acoustic emission signals. Criterions to determine the flooding gas velocity were proposed. The influence of liquid flowrate was investigated by air-water experiments. It was found that the prediction of the flooding gas velocity by AE signal STD was close to that by pressure drop. The power spectrum density of acoustic emission signals under different operation conditions showed that the maximal PSD peak transferred from around 50 kHz and 60 kHz to around 25 kHz when the packed column flooding. 7 scales wavelet transform was used to investigate the acoustic emission signals. Energy fraction of G1 (d4,d5) scale had a sharp rise as the gas velocity came to flooding gas velocity. The prediction of flooding gas velocity by G1 scale energy fraction was close to that by pressure drop. As a non-invasive method, acoustic emission detection can monitor flooding accurately and have a good application prospect.
Liquid Film Wavy Motion and Its Relation to Flooding Phenomena for Counter-Current Gas-Liquid Flow in a Narrow Channel of a Packed Column

Abstract:A method for the estimation of gas-liquid velocities at the flood point in a packed column, based on the models of flooding investigations in a narrow channel,was introduced herein.Experiments were conducted by using two structured corrugated packings and a novel vertical-sheet packing. Experimental results show that the Wallis-type model can effectively describe the flooding characteristics of the two corrugated packings,and the average relative deviation between experimental results and the calculated data by the model is-10.06%,while the Drosos-type model can accurately predict the gasliquid velocities at the flooding point in a packed column with an average relative deviation of-4.09%.In addition,in order to identify the onset of flooding as well as flooding spread process in a packed column, numerical experiments using volume of fluid method was employed.The results show that the onset of flooding is mainly triggered by the film wavy behavior.

Abstract:The silted-up sediment in the reservoir may have a significant influence on the propagation of dam-break flows. In this paper, a three-dimensional numerical simulation of the silted-up dam-break flow is carried out. A proposed Eulerian-Eulerian two-fluid model (TFM) coupled level set and volume of fluid (CLSVOF) method based on is employed to capture the air-water interface and calculate sediment transport. In order to calculate the motion of the air-water interface and the sediment simultaneously, kinetic particle theory (KPT) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are combined. The rheology-based constitutive equations of sediment are also considered to simulate scouring and deposition. In addition, a partial-slip boundary condition (BC) for the velocity of the sediment phase at stationary walls is implemented. The simulation results of the benchmark case demonstrate that the proposed model can effectively simulate the silted-up dam-break flow while taking into account multi-interface capturing problems. Subsequently, the simulations of the silted-up dam-break flow over dry are investigated numerically in a three-dimensional long channel.

Abstract:Three-phase packed distillation has been so far relatively poorly understood. Hence, a Substantial mass transfer model describing the (vapor-liquid-liquid) three-phase flow in packed column is proposed to explore the essence of three-phase distillation. The model enables, for the first time, rigorous computation of all the interphase transfer parameters oil the basis of a thorough consideration of the unique How behaviors (Such as film breakup, rivulet-flow, Surface variation, etc.) Caused by the second liquid. The derived theoretical mass transfer model has been incorporated into the three-phase nonequilibrium Simulation. Moreover, comprehensive experimental investigations have been carried Out using two laboratory-scale columns, and four different packings (Montz-Pak B1-350, Rombopak 9M, Raschig Super-Ring 0.3, and Sulzer Optiflow C.36) were considered. The derived experimental database, covering a wide range of load conditions, is used for flow pattern identification and model validation. For the Studied n-butanol/water/n-propanol system, it is revealed that the flow pattern of file second liquid (aqueous phase) could play a critical role in the system performance. When the second liquid flows below the first liquid film, it will enlarge the interfacial area and enhance the vapor-liquid mass transfer; when the second liquid flows above the first liquid film, it will reduce the interfacial area and degrade the mass transfer. This fundamental flow behavior may essentially result in the discrepancy existing in the highly variable separation efficiencies in three-phase packed columns.

Abstract:From the functional relationship between the flooding gas and liquid velocities derived from the two-film theory based on the Bernoulli equation,two parameters which are relative to the packing property were investigated.One is the packing factor a/e~3 which consists of the packing specific area a and the bed porosity e.Another is the structural parameter which was defined for the first time from this work.It was demonstrated by the present work that Raschig rings and spherical particles were belonging to the same type,and the structural parameter was found to be 1.4,while the Pall rings and Intalox saddles were belonging to a different one,and the structural parameter was 0.9.Since the effects of packing structure and packing factor are considered simultaneously,therefore,the flooding prediction is more(indicative) and more accurate.
Studies on a New Random Packing—Plum Flower Mini Ring

Abstract:The hydrodynamics and mass transfer of Plum Flower Mini Ring (PFMR), Pall Ring and Intalox Saddle were studied in a 600 mm diameter column with air-oxygen-water system over a wide range of liquid loads. It was shown from the experiments that PFMR had much lower resistance, larger throughput and higher mass transfer efficiency than Pall Ring and Intalox Saddle. It was clear from the comparison that existing equations could not predict the performance of packings very well at high liquid loads. Therefore, new semi-empirical equations of pressure drop, flooding gas velocity and height of transfer unit (HTU) were proposed based on the experimental data.

Abstract:The design of packed columns requires the detailed description of the hydrodynamics on the surface of the packings. To analyze the local flow behavior of the liquid phase, a three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model was developed that applies to the two-phase countercurrent flow on an inclined and flat plate. This model, based on the volume-of-fluid (VOF) method, considers the gravity, the surface tension and the drag force between the two phases. The development of such a model allows investigation of the influences of the liquid and gas flow rates on the flow behavior such as the film flow and the rivulet flow. A validation of the model was performed using data from the literature and from experiments conducted in this work. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the specific wetted area on the plate decreases with decreasing liquid load. Moreover, CFD simulations reveal that the presence of the countercurrent gas phase tends to increase the fluctuation and the thickness of the film flow, which is in accordance with experimental data. It also affects the flow behavior of the rivulet flow and changes the velocity profiles for both film and rivulet flow behavior. On the other hand, the simulation results indicate that CFD is a potent tool for analyzing and investigating the flow phenomena in chemical engineering.

Abstract:Detailed investigation of flow behavior in structured packing distillation columns is of great importance in accurate prediction of process efficiency and development of more efficient and optimal equipment internals. In this study, a three-dimensional two-phase flow model based on VOF method for simulating the hydrodynamics and mass-transfer behavior in a typical representative unit of the structured packing is developed. In the proposed model, the c2¯-ɛc model is used for the closure of turbulent mass transfer equation. By solving the proposed model, the velocity distribution, phase fraction profile and concentration field are obtained. Using these data, the total liquid holdup, the wetted area and the separation efficiency [height equivalent to a theoretical plate (HETP)] are estimated. For testing the model validation, the simulated HETPs are compared with our previous experimental data obtained in a 150 mm-diameter column containing Mellapak 350Y operating at the pressures of 0.6-1.8 MPa. The comparison shows that they are in satisfactory agreement, with an average absolute deviation (AAD) of 25.4%.

Abstract:Characterizing the complex two-phase hydrodynamics in structured packed columns requires a power-ful modeling tool. The traditional two-dimensional model exhibits limitations when one attempts to model the de-tailed two-phase flow inside the columns. The present paper presents a three-dimensional computational fluid dy-namics (CFD) model to simulate the two-phase flow in a representative unit of the column. The unit consists of an entire corrugation channel and describes well the real liquid flow conditions. The detailed unsteady two-phase 3D CFD calculations on column packed with Flexipak 1Y were implemented within the volume of fluid (VOF) mathe-matical framework. The CFD model was validated by comparing the calculated thickness of liquid film with the available experimental data. Special attention was given to quantitative analysis of the effects of gravity on the hy-drodynamics. Fluctuations in the liquid mass flow rate and the calculated pressure drop loss were found to be quali-tatively in agreement with the experimental observations.

Abstract:The hydraulic and mass transfer characteristics of a new type DFG oriented grid structured packing in a 100 mm diameter extraction column were studied. MIBK (methyl isobutyl ketone) and DIPE (diisopropyl ether) were selected as extractants, which were widely used in solvent extraction for coal chemical industry wastewater phenols removal. Result indicated that the hydraulic of the two extraction systems can be well described by an improved correlation; compared to the traditional packing, the extraction column with DFG structured packing can greatly improve the operation loadings. Within the experiment range, the max flooding loading is as high as 150 m3/(m2·h). The mass transfer performance is similar to traditional structured packing, the height equivalent to theoretical stage (He) is between 2.2 and 3.1 m. The DFG structured packing holds good integrated performances, which can meet the need of high throughput phenol removal extractors for the increasing large-scaled coal chemical industry.

Abstract:A three-dimensional (3-D) two-phase Eulerian-Eulerian-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation method coupled with a porous media model was developed in this study to simulate the air-water two-phase flow in an industrial-scale randomly packed air cooling tower (RPACT). The authors discussed the effects of gas kinetic energy factor, liquid load, packing materials, and packed bed height on the hydrodynamic performances of the gas-liquid counter-current flow in the proposed RPACT. The simulation results show that the pressure drop increases with the gas or liquid load increases. Liquid load influences the pressure drop, liquid holdup, and wall film flow rate sensitively. A smaller liquid load, a middle range of gas kinetic energy factor, a relatively greater porous resistance coefficient of packing material, and a higher packed bed height can achieve a more uniform liquid flow distribution in an RPACT. The optimum operating conditions for the present RPACT are determined as gas kinetic energy factor is from 1.76 to 2.11 [(m/s) (kg/m(3))(0.5)], liquid load is in the range of 32.40-67.73 m(3)/h, and the plastic Cascade ring (filled in the second packing layer) with a height of 10 m. The presented CFD models are useful for engineers to design and optimize the structure and operation conditions of industrial-scale RPACTs.

Abstract:In this study, the two-phase pressure drop and flooding velocity were investigated in a pilot plant of a new type of extraction column entitled “L-shaped pulsed packed extraction column” using two liquid-liquid systems of butyl acetate-water and toluene-water in the presence of acetone as the mass transfer agent. The effects of operating variables, physical properties, and the presence of mass transfer on the flooding velocity and pressure drop were considered. It is found that the pressure drop is strongly influenced not only by the flow rates of the continuous and dispersed phases, but also by the pulsation intensity. That is, increasing the values of these parameters increases the column stress and the flooding phenomenon to occur sooner. Surprisingly, it is observed that increasing the pulsation intensity and dispersed phase flow rate reduces the maximum throughput of the column but increasing the continuous phase flow rate enhances that. Furthermore, it is achieved that the interfacial tension is a physical property which has significant impact on the flooding and the presence of mass transfer only affect at the low pulsation intensity. Finally, a new correlation is proposed to accurately predict the flooding velocity. Sensible agreement between predictions and experiments was found for all investigated operational conditions, chemical systems and directions of mass transfer.

Abstract:It is shown from CFD simulation and particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements that the flow field around ring packing is impacted by their height/diameter ratio and inclination. The results indicate that it is better to decrease the height/diameter ratio of ring packing to intensify the separation processes in the packing bed. Based on a systematic study, a new Plum Flower Mini Ring (PFMR) was developed to meet the demands of separation column intensification. A comparison of the PFMR, Pall Ring and Intalox Saddle in a 600mm diameter column with an air-oxygen-water system over a wide range of liquid loads is presented. It was shown from the experiments that the PFMR had a much lower pressure drop, much larger throughput and better mass transfer efficiency than Pall Rings and Intalox Saddles. Abstract:In this study, a coupled two-fluid computational fluid dynamics (CFD)–component transfer (CT) model was constructed to investigate the mass transfer behavior and distribution of component concentration fields on trays within the two-staggered wall regions of a double-partition divided-wall column (DPDWC). By comparing the simulation results of the coupled CFD-CT model with the height-dependent calculation of the clear-liquid layer, this study validated the model, and then proceeded to analyse its effect on mass transfer in multiple zones of the tower under varying gas velocity conditions. The results showed that the mass-transfer efficiency increased initially, but then decreased with an increase in gas velocity within the studied gas velocity range. In addition, the evaporative condensation effect of the component mass transfer cause temperature variations across different regions of the tower.
