Abstract:The bubble size distribution and local gas holdup in a bubble column with inner diameter of 0.38 m were measured with dual conductivities probes, and the probability density distribution of bubble size was calculated. The result shows that bubble size increases with the increase of axial height and decreases with the increase of radial distance. Flow pattern in bubble column can be divided into transient flow zone and fully developed flow zone. Local gas holdup increases with the increase of axial height in the transient flow zone, and remains constant with the change of axial height in fully developed flow zone. Radial profile of gas holdup is in parabolic shape. The probability density distribution of bubble size under high gas velocity is wider than that under low gas velocity, and become wider with the increase of axial height.

Abstract:Based on single drop mass transfer models and two phase flow equation, a general equation for calculating the 'true' height of transfer unit of extraction columns was derived and tested with four types of extraction columns with some different working systems. The calculated results fitted well with those obtained by experiments.

Abstract:In this study, a new equation for estimating the height of the mass transfer unit, Hoxp, for mutually insoluble extraction systems was developed. The equation's accuracy and robustness were tested by comparing the predicted results with experimental data in the literature. With the same apparent interfacial tension, the mass transfer unit height decreased hyperbolically with the increase of the overall interphase volume mass transfer coefficient, despite the differences of column dimensions, experimental systems and operating conditions.

Abstract:Detailed investigation of flow behavior in structured packing distillation columns is of great importance in accurate prediction of process efficiency and development of more efficient and optimal equipment internals. In this study, a three-dimensional two-phase flow model based on VOF method for simulating the hydrodynamics and mass-transfer behavior in a typical representative unit of the structured packing is developed. In the proposed model, the c2¯-ɛc model is used for the closure of turbulent mass transfer equation. By solving the proposed model, the velocity distribution, phase fraction profile and concentration field are obtained. Using these data, the total liquid holdup, the wetted area and the separation efficiency [height equivalent to a theoretical plate (HETP)] are estimated. For testing the model validation, the simulated HETPs are compared with our previous experimental data obtained in a 150 mm-diameter column containing Mellapak 350Y operating at the pressures of 0.6-1.8 MPa. The comparison shows that they are in satisfactory agreement, with an average absolute deviation (AAD) of 25.4%.

Abstract:This paper develops a novel cross-flow cascade packed column. The column has a smaller width of packing in the direction of the gas flow and a bigger area for gas flow compared with a conventional cross-flow device with identical column diameter, stage height, and cross-sectional area for the irrigating liquid flows. The performance comparisons of the novel cross-flow cascade packed column with a countercurrent packed column for stripping ethanol from water indicate that the gas-phase pressure drop per theoretical stage in the novel cross-flow column is significantly lower than that in a countercurrent packed column operation under identical conditions. A methodology is developed for modeling the novel nine-stage cross-flow cascade packed column by using the "number of transfer unit" technique. This method is demonstrated by experimental data on ethanol-water.

Abstract:Published correlations for the prediction of flooding velocity in packed extraction columns are classified and analysed in terms of their methods of approach and way they are used. Problems were encountered when these correlations were used to predict the flooding velocity in new type of high-voidage packed column with low to medium interfacial tension systems. Results are presented to illustrate the problem encountered in the scale-up and design of packed columns. It is concluded that more measurements and a better understanding of the hydrodynamics are needed before reliable scale up can be carried out with this type of column.

Abstract:The hydraulic and mass transfer characteristics of a new type DFG oriented grid structured packing in a 100 mm diameter extraction column were studied. MIBK (methyl isobutyl ketone) and DIPE (diisopropyl ether) were selected as extractants, which were widely used in solvent extraction for coal chemical industry wastewater phenols removal. Result indicated that the hydraulic of the two extraction systems can be well described by an improved correlation; compared to the traditional packing, the extraction column with DFG structured packing can greatly improve the operation loadings. Within the experiment range, the max flooding loading is as high as 150 m3/(m2·h). The mass transfer performance is similar to traditional structured packing, the height equivalent to theoretical stage (He) is between 2.2 and 3.1 m. The DFG structured packing holds good integrated performances, which can meet the need of high throughput phenol removal extractors for the increasing large-scaled coal chemical industry.

Abstract:Hydrodynamics and mass transfer experiments were carried out in a 0.1m diameter extraction column with a new type (FG) stack packing developed recently in our laboratory. The working systems used were n-Butanol/Succinic acid/water with low interfacial tension of 1.50 x 10(-3)N . m(-1) and 30% TBP (Kerosene)/Acetic acid/water with interfacial tension of 10.0 x 10(-3)N . m(-1). Experimental results obtained indicated that (FG) stack packed extraction column was proved to possess high throughput capacity and excellent mass transfer efficiency. Replacing rotary discs with FG packings in a lube furfural extraction tower was quite success with significant economical benefits being claimed.

Abstract:The hydrodynamics such as dispersion phase retention rate and liquid flooding velocity were studied, and mass transfer experiments including theoretical plate determination were conducted in a 2 × 0.1 m dia extraction column filled with HS-I saddle type packing. The working system used in the experiments was n-butanol/succinic acid/water having low interface tension. The extraction column with HS-I type packing possessed high flux and high mass transfer efficiency, and the correlated equations could be used in the scale-up design of the column. The extraction column has been successfully used in LPG desulfurization process.

Abstract:Liquid-liquid extraction is a very powerful separation technique; however, the methods available to determine the number of stages necessary requires knowledge of the axial mixing and mass transfer parameters. The authors show that the dynamic process for evaluating the mass transfer and axial mixing parameters is successful in a pulsed sieve plate column of 150 mm (see figure).

Abstract:The simultaneous heat and mass transfer process is investigated in a countercurrent liquid water-vapor system, in a randomly packed column, with inner diameter of 94 mm and height of 2.1 m. It is observed that the axial temperature along the column changes significantly with the mass ratio of liquid water to vapor. When the mass ratio of liquid water to vapor is in the range of 7.7~13.3, the temperature profiles of the entire column show the similar characteristics and consequently, the stable operation can be achieved. A detailed mathematical model, assuming the transfer diffusion in the vapor side, is proposed to predicate the temperature profile along the packed column. The simulated results are in well agreement with the experimentaldata. And the heat and mass coefficients under different operating conditions are calculated, which are useful for the design of the industrial scale packed column. The mean mass transfer coefficient and heat transfer coefficient in this packed column is as following, k_g=0.060 kg/(m~2·s·MPa) and α_g=2.01 W/(m~2·K).

Abstract:Solvent extraction is an important chemical separation technology which is widely used in hydrometallurgy, nuclear chemical industries, petrochemical industries and etc. Extraction columns have many advantages, but are very difficult to scale-up and design. The study on mathematic modeling and scale-up of extraction columns in abroad is reviewed, and then the research, innovation and application of extraction columns in China are detailed in this paper. The systematical studies on two-phase hydrodynamics, back mixing and mass transfer of pulsed sieve plate extraction column by Wang and his co-workers are introduced in some detail since its importance for nuclear industries. The approaches developed by Wang to scale-up extraction columns by the first principle are essential. The performance of new developed coalescence-dispersion pulsed sieve plate extraction column is excellent and has been used in industry. The studies on RDC, packed extraction column and pulsed packed extraction column are described too. The innovations on NRDC, SMR and PFMR have great importance since their excellent performance and wide application. © All Rights Reserved.

Abstract:Characterizing the complex two-phase hydrodynamics in structured packed columns requires a power-ful modeling tool. The traditional two-dimensional model exhibits limitations when one attempts to model the de-tailed two-phase flow inside the columns. The present paper presents a three-dimensional computational fluid dy-namics (CFD) model to simulate the two-phase flow in a representative unit of the column. The unit consists of an entire corrugation channel and describes well the real liquid flow conditions. The detailed unsteady two-phase 3D CFD calculations on column packed with Flexipak 1Y were implemented within the volume of fluid (VOF) mathe-matical framework. The CFD model was validated by comparing the calculated thickness of liquid film with the available experimental data. Special attention was given to quantitative analysis of the effects of gravity on the hy-drodynamics. Fluctuations in the liquid mass flow rate and the calculated pressure drop loss were found to be quali-tatively in agreement with the experimental observations.
