Abstract:Slurries of nanometre sized zirconia powders in aqueous media were prepared, using polyacrylic acid and sodium pyrophosphate as dispersants, separately and in combination and the suspension, rheology, and slip characteristics studied. Compared with slurries of submicrometre powders the slurries had lower solids content at a specific viscosity level and exhibited thixotropic behaviour. Slip cast specimens had a low relative green density (< 36.4%) and underwent a large linear shrinkage (34%) on sintering at 1530-1600 degrees C for 4 h. The observed water content between attributed to the large specific surface area of the powder leading to a high adsorbed water content between the particles with consequent lower solids content and green density. The average grain size of samples sintered at 1600 degrees C 4 h was 1.6 mu m and the density 98.5% theoretical.
