Abstract:Light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation (laser) sources have many advantages for use in high data rate optical wireless communications. In particular, the low cost and high-bandwidth properties of laser sources such as vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) make them attractive for future indoor optical wireless communications. In order to be integrated into future indoor networks, such lasers should conform to eye safety regulations determined by the international electrotechnical commission (IEC) standards for laser safety. In this paper, we provide a detailed study of beam propagation to evaluate the received power of various laser sources, based on which as well as the maximum permissible exposure (MPE) defined by the IEC 60825-1:2014 standard, we establish a comprehensive framework for eye safety analyses. This framework allows us to calculate the maximum allowable transmit power, which is crucial in the design of a reliable and safe laser-based wireless communication system. Initially, we consider a single-mode Gaussian beam and calculate the maximum permissible transmit power. Subsequently, we generalize this approach for higher-mode beams. It is shown that the M-squared-based approach for analysis of multimode lasers ensures the IEC eye safety limits, however, in some scenarios, it can be too conservative compared to the precise beam decomposition method. Laser safety analyses with consideration of optical elements such as lens and diffuser, as well as for VCSEL array have been also presented. Skin safety, as another significant factor of laser safety, has also been investigated in this paper. We have studied the impacts of various parameters such as wavelength, exposure duration and the divergence angle of laser sources on the safety analysis by presenting insightful results.

Abstract:When the pulsed laser proximity fuze works in a strong electromagnetic environment, strong electromagnetic pulses will be coupled from the optical window of the receiving system into the cavity and cause serious interference to the circuit system, resulting in inaccurate detection range, misfires and even early explosions. By studying the relationship between light transmittance and shielding efficiency of metal grating films with different periods and line widths, a metal grating film with appropriate periods and line widths is selected to shield the optical window. The CST software was used to establish an integrated shielding model loaded with metal grid light windows. The simulation results showed that the electromagnetic shielding performance reached 40dB in the 0-8GHz frequency band, while meeting the shielding performance requirements of the detection target.

Abstract:Compared to other silicon-based devices, silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs suffer from a shorter short-circuit withstand time and degradation after repeated short-circuiting, which challenges the short-circuit protection circuit design for SiC MOSFETs. In this paper, a short-circuit test platform for SiC MOSFETs is designed and built. Based on the test platform, the relationship between gate voltage, short-circuit withstand time and the short-circuit peak current overshoot is measured and discussed. Based on the test results, a lower gate voltage can significant increase the short circuit withstand time and decrease the short-circuit current. And a short-circuit protection scheme with a soft turn off circuit is proposed and designed, which can achieve fast short-circuit protection response with reduced fault peak current under hard switching fault condition. The soft turn-off circuit can also effectively suppress the voltage overshoot caused by the power loop stray inductance. Compared to the hard turn-off condition, the voltage overshoot can be reduced from 124V to 40V at the same condition using soft-turn off.

Abstract:In this paper, the overcurrent and overvoltage mechanism of unified power flow controller (UPFC) during its operation in high voltage system is analyzed, and a set of detailed protection circuits is designed for UPFC. This protection circuits inserts charging resistors automatically in the shunt side of the UPFC, and removes it after uncontrolled charging completes in the start-up phase of UPFC. When a short-circuit fault occurs, the Fault Current Limiter (FCL) is inserted immediately to limit the fault current. The outlet of shunt converter is shorted with no delay to isolate the large voltage and current when overvoltage of the dc capacitor occurs. The proposed circuits are applied to a 10kV/lMVA UPFC. Experimental results prove the reliability and feasibility of the protection circuits which operates automatically, ensures the safe operation of UPFC, and does not affect the normal function of UPFC.

Abstract:In order to achieve the highest peak power of radiation pulse and highest output energy, the primary circuit parameters are investigated to optimize the discharge circuit performance of the laser. The structure and the discharge circuit of the laser are discussed at first. To realize synchronous discharge in two discharge channels, the conjunct electrode device for two pairs of discharge electrodes is designed. Finally, the results of the experiments on the primary circuit parameters are given. The discharge is most stable at a pressure of 5.33 x 10(4)Pa when the pressure of gaseous mixture CO2:N-2:He=1:1:3 is changed from 2.67 x 10(4) Pa to 6.67 x 10(4) Pa. The ratio of storage capacitance to peak capacitance is chosen to be about 1.5-7/3, because residual voltage is lower on this condition and residual voltage is adverse to discharge. When the inductance 330 mu H is used, the homogeneous glow discharge in a widest voltage range is obtained. The duration of charge and discharge and the magnitude of residual voltage decrease when the stimuli voltage is increased in homogeneous glow discharge condition. The discharge circuit allows the homogeneous glow discharge in a wide range of pressure of gaseous mixture when these circuit parameters are used. Thus it offers reference to the improvement of output characteristic of TEA CO2 laser with two discharge channels.

Abstract:Atmospheric pressure gliding arc discharge has a wide range of applications in the fields of energy environment and material processing. During the discharge process, with the conversion of the gliding arc discharge mode, for the driving power supply, the output of the discharge process is from an open circuit to a near short circuit. There are two kinds of work. The switching of states requires an additional design of overcurrent-short-circuit protection methods suitable for gliding arc discharge applications. The nanosecond pulse power supply is the most potential excitation power source in the field of gliding arc discharge, and has broad application research prospects. In order to solve the problem of overcurrent and short circuit at the output terminal caused by gliding arc discharge, this paper proposes an over-current-short-circuit protection solution based on a Marx generator-based nanosecond pulse power current-limiting protection module and an automatic quick-cutting protection module. By analyzing the working process of the Marx pulse power supply and the working characteristics of the MOSFET, a current-limiting scheme to transfer the switch from the saturation region to the variable resistance region is designed, and the calculation method of the parameter design of the current-limiting resistor network is designed. At the same time, in order to solve the problem that the current-limiting protection scheme cannot cope with the normal short-circuit of the output terminal, an automatic quick-cut protection module is designed, including a short-circuit detection circuit, a fault latch circuit and an action circuit, which realizes the high-reliability triggering of the short-circuit fault signal, thereby solving the problem of a normal short-circuit at the output terminal. Finally, through the simulation experiment method, the feasibility of the over-current short-circuit protection scheme proposed in this paper is verified.

Abstract:A simple LD laser drive circuit was designed for pulse phase laser rangefinder,which contains the frequency synthesizer and the laser modulation circuit.This paper analyzes the effect of the circuit on the ranging range,accuracy,cycle and energy consumption,and illustrates the key points to improve laser ranging performance.Intermittent burst emission was achieved by enabling and disabling the operational transcondnctance amplifiers(OTA).This intermittent burst emission heightens the laser peak power,which can enhance the measurement range.This circuit design is simple and feasible,and has cerctain reference value for the handheld laser rangefinder developing.

Abstract:In this paper, the output characteristics of the proposed multistage low-frequency solid-state protector are studied in detail from the aspects of steady state response and transient response based on the principle and composition of the protector. Furthermore, a special test platform was set up to verify the protective characteristics of the component. The results show that the isolation of the protector can be higher than 43dB and the response time is faster than 4ns under the typical input microwave pulse of 63 dBm power, 1us pulse width and 1 kHz refrequency, which shows good protection characteristics and has guiding significance for the design and research of similar devices.

Abstract:In the field of laser radiation protection and photoelectric countermeasure,it is important to find out the laser damaged characteristics of photovoltaic detectors.Considering the damaged area and the open circuit voltage,different performance of pulse laser induced damage to photovoltaic detectors in vacuum and atmosphere environments is investigated.The measuring object is uncovered 2CR 10×2.5 four-quadrant silicon photo cell and the irradiation source is 1064nm wavelength pulsed solid-state Nd∶YAG laser.In both vacuum and atmosphere,the damage threshold and damage spot appearance of the photovoltaic detector are discussed under single pulse or multi-pulse laser irradiation.The difference of the damage area and their influence on the photovoltaic detector are compared experimentally in both environments.The results show that the laser induced damage threshold in vacuum is obviously lower than that in atmosphere.It is about forty percent of that in atmosphere under the experimental condition.

Abstract:This manuscript introduces a laser drive circuit for a light detection and ranging (Lidar) system. A Lidar system usually requires its drive circuit to provide laser pulses with nanosecond pulse width, >100 W peak power and high repetition frequency. However, the existing research results show difficulties in meeting these requirements. In order to reduce the pulse width and increase the peak power of laser pulses, special circuit design and component selection are used to optimize the parasitic parameters of the drive circuit, and GaN devices are used to increase the switching speed. The characteristics of laser pulses are tested under different input voltage, pulse per second and switch conducting time. Meanwhile, the reasons for the changes in these characteristics are analyzed and explained. In order to meet the requirements of the Lidar system to detect targets at different distances, a modulation method to change the peak power of the laser pulse is proposed. In our experiment, ideally, the peak power of the laser pulse reaches 135 W, and the pulse width is less than 2 ns at a pulse per second rate of 400 kHz.

Abstract:Novel mesogenic [60]fullerenes have been synthesized and doped into cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) to achieve a dual-mechanism laser protection system that is effective for both pulsed and broadband cw lasers, simultaneously. It was found that this system integrated a good OPL response, broadband protection range, and high practicability with great potentials in flexible and even wearable protection devices.

Abstract:An ionizing radiation hazard produced from the interaction between high intensity lasers and solid targets has been observed. Laser-plasma interactions create "hot" electrons, which generate bremsstrahlung X-rays when they interact with ions in the target. However, up to now only limited studies have been conducted on this laser-induced radiological protection issue. In this paper, the physical process and characteristics of the interaction between high intensity lasers and solid targets are analyzed. The parameters of the radiation sources are discussed, including the energy conversion efficiency from laser to hot electrons, hot electron energy spectrum and electron temperature, and the bremsstrahlung X-ray energy spectrum produced by hot electrons. Based on this information, the X-ray dose generated with high-Z targets for laser intensities between 10(14) and 10(20) W/cm(2) is estimated. The shielding effects of common shielding items such as the glass view port, aluminum chamber wall and concrete wall are also studied using the FLUKA Monte Carlo code. This study provides a reference for the dose estimation and the shielding design of high intensity laser facilities.

Abstract:Due to the fact that low voltage busbar has no special fast protection configured, fault happens easily. Now arc protection device, based on AND logic of the arc signal and over current signal, is gradually used in low voltage distribution network. The 10 ms tripping speed, to some extent, meets the requirement for the need to quickly remove fault when arc faults happen in low-voltage busbar and power distribution cabinet. However, due to the fact that the arc components are vulnerable to interference, and only conduct passive defense for not considering the reasons for the occurrence of the arc, while the requirements for the structure and configuration of the existing arc protection device are high, and because there is a large defect, it is not easy to meet the site requirements. On this basis, the formation and development of arc fault are analyzed. The theory of introducing ultrasonic into arc protection is put forward and experimentally verified. For the existing devices based on this foundation, protection panels and modules are increased. NCE600RF-D series ultrasound atresia intelligent arc protection and measuring device is developed. And through a variety of field and laboratory tests, its feasibility is verified. It is put into operation in the field, and significantly improves operating performance.

Abstract:An analog PID controller-based galvanometer scanner is widely used by fractional laser medical equipment (FLME) to scan lasers across tissue surfaces, achieving the desired therapeutic effect. This type of driver, primarily composed of passive components and operational amplifiers, can only accept commands from the central controller of the FLME, with a simple hardware circuit-based fault diagnosis; thus, the safety of the FLME is compromised. To address these issues, the failure mechanisms of galvanometers and their impact on the safety of FLME are thoroughly analyzed first. Then, an adaptive limit protection method, a coil open circuit fault diagnosis, a communication timeout protection based on two handshakes, and a galvanometer control timeout protection are proposed, respectively, based on a digital driver platform, to supplement the deficiencies in the original fault diagnosis and protection system. This ensures the safety of the FLME. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed strategies is validated through experiments.

Abstract:System efficient ESD design (SEED) is an effective method for simulating Electrostatic discharge (ESD) behaviors of a system. Based on this simulation method, this work investigates transient behaviors of a co-design protection circuit and failure of a hybrid-triggered power clamp under surge stress. In addition to utilization of transmission line pulsing (TLP) I-V curves, transient TLP waveforms are also used for building the component and device models in the co-design protection circuit. Moreover, the relevant measurements are included in this work for verifying the simulation results of the co-design protection circuit and failure analysis of the power clamp.
Anti-interference Methods for Small-sized Laser Proximity Fuse

Abstract:A small-sized laser proximity fuse based on CPLD was designed for some small-caliber ammunitions, the common anti-interference methods used for medium-caliber and large-caliber ammunitions will not be suitable, due to the limited space and power. Analyzed the interferences of a small-sized laser proximity fuse, the major ones are: (a) the electromagnetic radiation of laser transmitter module; (b) the unstable power supple disturbs all circuit modules; (c) false targets like tree branch. Kinds of technical measures are adopted in circuit design, PCB design, optical system design, and programming to reduce their influences to ensure the necessary stability, reliability and precision. Using small-caliber ammunition as a base to develop prototyping and conduct targeting experiments successfully. The test experiments show that the power consumption is low and it can detect vertical test board (gray iron) at 5 m far away with no more than 90 mA current (25 V DC). The test results in high overload conditions indicate that the prototyping can work normally and steadily in the whole trajectory.

Abstract:Strong Electromagnetic pulse can easily be coupled to the internal circuit of the land combat platform through antenna, aperture, cable, etc., interfering with the normal operation of electronic equipment, and even causing permanent damage. This article designs a multi-level filtering protection circuit for the power port of the vehicle platform in response to the protection requirements of the power port of the land combat platform. The generation mechanism and modulation mode of strong Electromagnetic pulse are analyzed, and the electromagnetic coupling mode of the power port of the land combat platform is studied. The strong Electromagnetic pulse protection circuit of the power port of the land combat platform is emphatically designed. The simulation test shows that the filtering effect of the strong Electromagnetic pulse protection circuit of the power port of the land combat platform can be as high as 60dB, which can protect the electronic equipment in the land combat platform very well, thus greatly improving the survivability of the land combat platform in the complex electromagnetic environment of the battlefield.

Abstract:The non-communication protection of double circuit line system was implemented in the P540 series protections of AREVA Ltd. The protection principle is presented, and the software flow chart and hardware link are described. At last, the result of the dynamic simulation test is discussed, which proves that the novel non-communication protection has satisfying sensitivity and reliability in most of faults and systems.

Abstract:A laser triggered RF breakdown experiment was carried out with an S-band photocathode gun at Tsinghua University for attempting understanding of the RF breakdown processes. By systematic measurement of the time dependence of the breakdown current at the gun exit and the stored RF energy in the cavity, one might gain insight into the time evolution of RF breakdown physics. A correlation of the stored energy and field emission current has been analysed with an equivalent circuit model. Experimental details and analysis methods are reported.

Abstract:This work explores a combination of techniques using pulsed and continuous lasers to investigate and quantify the suit-ability of state-of-the-art logic technology for radiation hardened applications. We find that using a laser allows the sensitivity of underlying circuitry to be evaluated providing insights into the underlying failure mechanisms and enabling further hardening by design opportunities. Lastly, we show a non-invasive pump-probe laser voltage probe technique that allows us to evaluate logic circuitry response of various design topologies to ionizing radiation events.
